Transcript
00:00Hi!
00:02So sorry.
00:03How's your lunch to the talking thing?
00:05I don't know. Mama, Dada, Honey, you pick it up.
00:08Jerry Seinfeld is back, and this time around, he's found a new cast of characters to play with.
00:12Thinking Bee, Thinking Bee.
00:14The first major project since his award-winning television show,
00:18Jerry Seinfeld brings his singular comedic vision as writer, producer,
00:22and the voice of Barry B. Benson in DreamWorks Bee Movie.
00:25By the way!
00:27Talking to a bee.
00:28Anyway.
00:28And the bee is talking to me.
00:30With some help from his friends, Rene Zellweger, Matthew Broderick,
00:34Eh, what?
00:34and Chris Rock.
00:35Bees hang tight.
00:37Wow, we're all jammed in there. It's a close community.
00:40Jerry Seinfeld has certainly given audiences something to buzz about.
00:47Keeper, I find that to be a very interesting term.
00:51I don't imagine you employ any bee freers, do you?
00:53It's hard for me as a comedian sometimes to do other people's material.
00:57So I felt like if I was going to do something, it should really be something that I think of and that I could really develop on my own.
01:03How did you get mixed up in all this?
01:05I had dinner with Steven Spielberg.
01:07That's just a rumor.
01:09I was thinking about this idea and I said, what about a movie about bees called Bee Movie?
01:12And he got very excited.
01:15He said, that's a great idea.
01:16I love that title.
01:17Then the next thing I knew, they had me doing it.
01:19Do these look like rumors?
01:21It is true.
01:21I really didn't have an idea for the movie.
01:23All I had was the title.
01:25I think getting Jerry to do this movie was an amazing coup.
01:28Jeffrey Katzenberg was hounding him for 12 years, I think.
01:31And finally, Jerry agreed.
01:33That's pretty good.
01:34Maybe one more complete rotation there just at the bottom.
01:37I didn't really know anything about how these movies are made.
01:41I had to learn the whole thing.
01:42Jeffrey Katzenberg taught me everything.
01:45I know how to write funny things, but I had no idea what to do.
01:48And he put me through this crash course of here's how you make one of these movies.
01:52And then he pushed me to make it myself.
01:55That's a good idea.
01:56Yeah, that's a good thought.
01:58I don't think there's ever been a major talent like Jerry Seinfeld who has been as involved with an animated movie as he has been.
02:06That's great.
02:07Every little detail of this movie has been influenced by Jerry and his sensibilities.
02:14And that creates that Seinfeld stamp, which I think is on the movie and is on every single frame in the movie.
02:19These are funny.
02:20We didn't laugh.
02:21We'd cry.
02:22But we have to go with it.
02:23Jerry Seinfeld, obviously, is a lot of fun to work with.
02:27He's funny, which is good.
02:28It's a good start.
02:30Whoa, heads up.
02:31Here we go.
02:32I play Barry B. Benson.
02:34It's me.
02:34I'm Barry.
02:35It's just me.
02:37I don't like to venture too far from who I am.
02:41He talks like me.
02:42He acts like me.
02:42He thinks like me.
02:44I'm Barry.
02:45No, Dad.
02:46He surprised me.
02:48Have you decided what you're interested in, son?
02:50Well, there's a lot of choices.
02:52But you only get what?
02:53I'm a college graduate who is looking for something to do.
02:59He's just not quite sure where he fits in.
03:01That blew my mind.
03:02So we graduate, and five minutes later, I have to decide what I want to do for the rest of my life?
03:08You have got to start thinking bee, my friend.
03:11Matthew Broderick plays Adam, Barry's best friend.
03:14And Adam is the exact opposite of Barry.
03:17Adam is very happy to live the bee way, not challenge the system.
03:21He loves the idea of working at Honey for the rest of his life.
03:23He doesn't really care what job he takes.
03:25Can anyone work on the crown man?
03:27Every bee knows his role, and so as soon as somebody upsets the apple cart, it's a terribly dangerous thing for bees.
03:34I'm going to jack up with a grasshopper, get a gold tooth, and start calling everybody dog.
03:38Look, Barry, you're crazy.
03:40You're doing something crazy.
03:41I want everything to stay the same, and Barry wants to try things differently.
03:46Stand back.
03:47These are winter boons.
03:49Wait!
03:50Don't kill him!
03:51Why does his life have any less value than yours?
03:54I play Vanessa, the florist, who happens upon little Barry B and saves his life.
03:59Everybody's determined on squashing him with a boob sole, and she will have none of it.
04:05She liberates him.
04:06She saved my life.
04:07I've got to say something.
04:09Oh, I can't do it.
04:10Come on!
04:11Do it!
04:12Yes!
04:12No!
04:13What'd I say?
04:14You like jazz?
04:15I had done an animated feature before, and I enjoyed the experience so much, and I said
04:20that, you know, Mrs. Seinfeld would like to speak to you about Vanessa and B-movie, and
04:25we chatted on the phone, and I immediately liked him, and I thought this could be a lot
04:28of fun.
04:31Renee is somebody who is a big fan of Jerry's, and I think she loved the role, and she herself
04:37is such a great comedian, and she's got a little bit of porkiness in her that was perfect
04:42for our character, Vanessa.
04:44I like you.
04:45Bees have good qualities.
04:47I can see Renee befriending a bee in her off time.
04:51I'm sure this is very disconcerting.
04:53Yeah.
04:53I mean, this is a bit of a surprise to me.
04:55I mean, you're a bee.
04:57It's one of my favorite lines in the movie that Renee has is that she says to someone,
05:02he's the nicest bee I've met in a long time.
05:04Yeah.
05:05It's ruined it for me, and, you know, for other bees for the most part.
05:09But one can hope.
05:10Well, well, I met someone.
05:12You met someone?
05:12Was she bee-ish?
05:14A bee in a human?
05:16Well, for obvious reasons.
05:18What could come of that relationship as far as Adam is concerned?
05:21You're flying outside the hive.
05:23You're talking to human beings that attack our homes with power watchers and M-80.
05:28She's a florist.
05:29Oh, no, no, no, no.
05:30You're dating a human florist.
05:32Hello, bee.
05:34Vanessa's boyfriend is Ken, played by Patrick Warburton.
05:38I remember you.
05:38Timberland.
05:39Size ten and a half.
05:40Why does he talk again?
05:42And when she develops this friendship with the bee, he becomes very threatened.
05:46Even though he's a big, strong, handsome guy, this little bee totally unnerves him.
05:51You know, I'm allergic to them.
05:53This thing could kill me.
05:54Ken and Vanessa are an item, right?
05:57And somebody's sort of come between the two of them.
06:01The bee.
06:05Yeah, Vanessa's a new friend.
06:08And so Ken's not happy at all about that, because they're getting a little bit too close.
06:13Ken, Barry was looking at your resume, and he agreed with me that eating with chopsticks isn't really a special skill.
06:21I think I don't see what you're doing.
06:23Jerry always intended Patrick Warburton to play the role, because he had worked with Patrick as Putty in the Seinfeld show.
06:30And I think when he was creating that character of Ken as kind of like a foil to Barry, he always had Patrick in the back of his head that he was going to play it.
06:39Why is yogurt night so difficult?
06:43Jerry just likes to make me.
06:44You just want to make me yell.
06:45I do.
06:46I love it.
06:47Bee!
06:48I prefer sugar-free artificial sweeteners made by man.
06:54Oh, that bee is living my life!
06:57Patrick really makes me laugh really hard.
07:00I tried to call, but...
07:03Everything he says just makes me laugh, and then I can't stop laughing.
07:08And I'm not known for having good self-control.
07:11Even in my TV show, you can see I'm starting to laugh half the time.
07:14If I think something's funny, I can't not laugh.
07:17But Ken, there's something about this character, Ken.
07:19I think it's the funniest thing that Patrick has done in a career of doing a lot of very funny things.
07:25He's 81.
07:25Honey, her backhand's a joke.
07:28I'm not going to take advantage of that.
07:31Just keep still.
07:32What?
07:33I'm going to Alaska.
07:34Moose Blood.
07:35Crazy stuff.
07:37Blows your head off.
07:40Moose Blood's one of these guys he just kind of bumps into from time to time.
07:45You know those people you just bump into?
07:47No real reason.
07:48Oh no!
07:49It's a wiper!
07:50Triple plane!
07:50Triple plane!
07:51Jump on!
07:52It's your only chance, Bee!
07:53We never really worked on anything together.
07:58So I thought that was cool.
08:00That these two guys with such different comedic sensibilities could get together.
08:06You try to get mosquitoes, you go to hives.
08:08Watch it happen.
08:11Here's to a great team.
08:13To a great team!
08:14It's a great bunch of people we got together.
08:16Well, if it isn't the Bee Team.
08:20No!
08:23I love it!
08:24We have Kathy Bates and Barry Levinson.
08:27They're two crazy bee parents.
08:29Oh, Barry, stop.
08:30They're a little upset with him and they constantly ask him,
08:33Why are you not acting bee-ish?
08:34Where are you going?
08:35I'm meeting a friend.
08:36I just hope she's bee-ish.
08:38Ladies and gentlemen of the Juraire.
08:42Leighton T. Montgomery, the Mouthful South.
08:45He's played by John Goodman.
08:47Talking bee!
08:49How do we know this isn't some sort of holographic motion picture capture Hollywood whistleblower?
08:55He's the classic, slightly corrupt southern lawyer who, you know, likes to talk about Gawad
09:01and uses words like woman.
09:04For all we know, he could be on steroids.
09:08We are the envy of the insect world.
09:12My character in Bee Movie is Trudy and she is the tour guy at HunX.
09:17Welcome to HunX, a division of Hunesco and a part of the Hexagon Group.
09:22I did not do any research.
09:24Can you imagine?
09:25Yeah.
09:25Yeah, I did research.
09:26I went to, like, a beekeeping farm and lived there for six weeks in preparation for my
09:34one scene.
09:35All of you, hit those flowers!
09:39That's great.
09:40The head of the pollen jocks is named Luluduka and he's played by Rip Torn, who is absolutely
09:46perfect casting for it.
09:49You guys did great.
09:50You're monsters.
09:51You're sky freaks.
09:52I love it.
09:53I love it.
09:54All right, all right, give it to me, give it to me, come on.
09:56And Ray Liotta also makes an appearance in the movie as one of these celebrities have
10:01these little food boutique things that they do.
10:04This isn't a good fella.
10:05This is a bad fella.
10:07I enjoy what I do.
10:09What can I say?
10:11I'm a people person.
10:13This is the equivalent of Larry King in the Bee World called Bee Larry King.
10:16You know they have a Larry King in the human world, too.
10:18It's a common name.
10:19He's very Larry King-ish, as Barry observes.
10:21Next week on Bee Larry King.
10:23No, no, no.
10:24I mean, he looks like you and he has a show with suspenders and different colored dots
10:27behind him.
10:29Larry Miller, who is also, I think, one of Jerry's oldest friends.
10:34They've known each other since the days he started off in comedy.
10:37Restroom attendance always open, and not for the reason you think.
10:39I play Mr. Buzwell of Hunnex Corporation, which is very silly and a lot of fun.
10:45And I think it's very funny.
10:46Well, whenever a bee dies, that's an opening.
10:49See that?
10:50He's dead.
10:51Dead.
10:52Another dead one.
10:53Dead from the neck up.
10:53Dead from the neck down.
10:54But that's life.
10:57It's funny.
10:58And frankly, what is Jerry going to do that's not funny?
11:01And yeah, they've got a bunch of good group of knuckleheads together for this.
11:05Humans.
11:05I can't believe you were with humans.
11:07Giant, scary humans.
11:09What were they like?
11:10Huge and crazy.
11:12Talking crazy.
11:14Eating crazy.
11:14Giant foods.
11:15They drive around real crazy.
11:17In feature films particularly, we tend to record actors on their own.
11:21But with this, we've recorded Jerry with Matthew and Jerry with Renee.
11:25And there's material that's come from those sessions, which could never have been scripted.
11:31Yay!
11:31I knew you could do it!
11:33High five!
11:33You can kind of indulge those moments of just appreciating the humor as it spills.
11:38And let me tell you, it's spilling all over the place in here.
11:42Reed.
11:43Yeah.
11:43Give, give, give me.
11:45Well, first we do the scene the way it's written.
11:48And once we have that, we usually just say, let's just try and do it now as if we're just
11:53talking and we see what happens.
11:55And a lot of that has ended up in the movie.
11:57Well, I've been sucking the blood of humans this long.
12:00It's about time I got paid for it.
12:02It's fun to ad-lib.
12:03And it's also fun to be getting directed.
12:05There's always a period where you don't trust that person.
12:09Because you don't know, you're like, okay, I haven't seen you be funny before.
12:13But, you know, I'm looking at the master right there.
12:16And he's like, he says, do it this way.
12:17I'm like, all right.
12:19I'll take it down.
12:20Okay.
12:21You know.
12:23I trust you.
12:24Why do I close so tight?
12:26Oh, my head blows up.
12:27My head blows up.
12:28For the most part, you end up working by yourself in studios.
12:33And this has just been so much fun.
12:37Because every time you come in, Jerry is there.
12:39And you're working with Jerry.
12:40And it's a bit surreal, you know.
12:42Just playing back and forth.
12:44It's great fun.
12:45We all had this idea when we first thought of what this film should be.
12:48And it's actually as good as we wanted it to be.
12:51I guess that's why they say we don't need vacations.
12:53One time they asked me, what was the thing I liked least about working on a B-movie?
12:58And that was simple, is knowing that someday this is going to end.
13:01Because Jerry Seinfeld is truly one of the most wonderful collaborators I've ever worked with.
13:06That's very funny.
13:07Yeah.
13:07B's are funny.
13:08We are professional fun havers.
13:11Yeah.
13:11That is our job.
13:11That's right.
13:12And we're available on Saturdays between?
13:15Between 1 and 5.
13:17What happened here?
13:18I tried to talk to them.
13:20There was a dust buster, a toupee, a life raft exploded.
13:23Now one's bald, one's in a boat, and they're both unconscious.
13:26Is that another B joke?
13:27You can't take for granted what it means to be involved in something good.
13:31Don't listen to me.
13:33You know, work with the best.
13:35And Jerry Seinfeld is the best.
13:37Sorry I'm late.
13:39There was a ladybug in my spot.
13:42That's funny.
13:44That's good.
13:45Well, he's a very sweet guy.
13:47Got a stinging sense of humor.
13:49And, uh, oh, he's just a honey of a fella.
13:52Hi, B.
13:53It's his comic sensibility and perspective that made his show, you know, so fun and wonderful.
14:00You know, all those years.
14:01And now he's doing it with the exploited B.
14:05And so it's fun.
14:07Harry, we did it!
14:09I love it.
14:10I love it.
14:11I'm the biggest fan of the movie.
14:13Yes!
14:14High five!
14:15I have to sit there and hold my hand over my mouth because I want to just laugh out loud.
14:20It really makes me laugh.
14:22It's completely silly.
14:24You can just start packing up, honey, because I believe you're about to hit us.
