00:00Taiwan is set to receive the first batch of anti-ship Harpoon missiles from the U.S. soon
00:04as part of plans to establish a new coastal command.
00:08Land-based missile defense systems are part of an over $2 billion U.S. arms deal signed in 2020.
00:14Reporting to lawmakers about delays in weapons deliveries,
00:17a top Taiwan Navy official confirmed the missiles are expected near the end of the year or nearly
00:23or early next year. The missiles are set to be delivered in time to establish a new coastal
00:28defense command currently scheduled for mid-2026. Separately, head of the U.S. Taiwan Business
00:34Council, Rupert Hammond Chambers, spoke at the U.S. Taiwan Defense Industry Conference.
00:38He addressed the concerns about arms delays and expressed confidence that more deals are coming
00:44soon. When a new administration comes in, there is typically up to a year before they make their
00:49first notification. I do think that after the special budget is passed, there will be an
00:56increasingly large number of very large congressional notifications going to Capitol Hill.
01:04The weapons package made up of 400 missiles along with support vehicles is expected to be fully
01:10delivered by 2028.
