00:00My son passed away while I was breastfeeding him in bed.
00:04I had a really bad day.
00:06My partner of seven months, who was not my child's biological father,
00:10broke up with me that day out of nowhere, and I was at a loss.
00:14By the time I got home, the exhaustion was really kicking in.
00:18I lived with my parents, and I thought about waking them up
00:21and seeing if they didn't mind keeping the baby for me for the night.
00:24But I really just didn't want to wake them up and impose.
00:28If mom had chosen to wake her parents, this could have saved her son's life.
00:32I laid down with him in my bed to give him his nighttime feeding.
00:36I hadn't taken any precautions at the time with my bed.
00:39I mean, I had pillows and blankets and my water bottle and my remote
00:42and everything that I would normally have in my bed
00:45because I had full intentions of placing him in his bassinet to sleep.
00:50So I laid down with him and started feeding.
00:53I was so tired that I just passed out.
00:57I woke up in an absolute panic, and I looked down,
01:02and in my sleep I had actually cuddled him closer to me, like into my chest.
01:08And as soon as I saw his face, like, I knew exactly what had happened.
01:14Her dad is a respiratory therapist working at an NICU, so he knew exactly what to do.
01:18The first thing I did was hop up and run into my parents' room, like,
01:22I need help right now, and then got on the phone and called 911.
01:26My dad started performing CPR on Vincent.
01:29At this point, he still had full color, and we were kind of hopeful that maybe we had caught it in time,
01:38that he was going to be okay.
01:39But unfortunately, it was too late.
01:42Kat now dedicates her life to raising awareness on SIDS to parents all over the world through social media.
01:47Accidental suffocation is the leading cause of infant injury death in America.
01:5299% of all unexpected infants happen in an unsafe sleep environment.
01:58There are many benefits to co-sleeping, but what most parents don't know is that co-sleeping is defined as babies still sleeping in their own crib or bassinet,
02:06but in the same room as the parents, not in the same bed.
02:10Research suggests the rate of infant from unintentional suffocation has risen over 15% in the last 20 years.
02:18If you do get in bed with your baby, take the precautions for if an accident occurs.
02:24Please ask for help.
02:25It is okay to ask for help.
02:27I'm doing my best to make something good out of my pain and give his life the purpose that it deserves.
02:33Mom often visits her baby boy's resting place to keep his memory alive.
02:37Hey, Vincent.
02:39It's your mama.
02:40I'm here at the gravesite where we spread your ashes.
02:44I came to wish you a happy three-month birthday.
02:47There's not a moment that goes by that I will live for you.
02:52Mom would do anything to see her baby again.
02:55Her passion for creating awareness shows her love for her son.
02:58Fly high, beautiful Vincent.
