Thieves carried out a daring daylight heist at Paris’ Louvre Museum on Sunday (Oct 19), using a basket lift to break in through a window before stealing “priceless” pieces of jewellery from the Galerie d’Apollon, home to the French Crown Jewels.

00:00Thieves used a basket lift to break into the Louvre Museum through a window on Sunday,
00:06making off with priceless pieces of jewelry, before fleeing on motorbikes.
00:10France's Interior Ministry said the break-in occurred around 9.30 a.m. local time,
00:16shortly after the museum had opened to the public.
00:19The suspects reportedly entered the Galerie d'Apollon, which houses the French crown jewels.
00:24Authorities have yet to disclose the exact items stolen.
00:27However, the ministry said the pieces carried not only significant market value,
00:32but also immeasurable heritage and historical importance.
00:37Police quickly sealed off the area and evacuated visitors.
00:40No injuries were reported among the public, museum staff, or officers.
00:45According to Le Parisien, the thieves accessed the building via the Seine-facing façade,

00:52They allegedly used a freight elevator to reach the gallery before smashing windows
00:58and seizing nine jewelry pieces belonging to Napoleon and Empress Eugénie.
