00:00all these creepy feelings came over me what's wrong with this man he's so distant he's so aloof
00:06this is not real it just hit me wow love is not really my last name
00:13this was big front page news for weeks
00:18oh my god
00:30i realized my husband bobby didn't like his photo taken that was really weird to me
00:37and one time i just went on ahead and took it anyway
00:42and he got so mad and i'm like you are really upset with me because i took a picture of you
00:50my dad was very mysterious and i always wondered why that was the case i would see my mom cry when
00:58my dad didn't want to take pictures or just do so many family things so it was something that
01:06really bothered her i knew i wasn't going to tell cheryl the whole truth i was going to go to my death
01:13with my secret
01:15my name is cheryl love i grew up in brooklyn new york in the lewis h pink houses project
01:36it was six of us six children all together i remember playing in the playground climbing on
01:44the monkey bars playing double dutch with my friends and tag freeze tag those were good times
01:53my mom and dad they were high school sweethearts and they brought all that love to our family
02:00when i was nine years old i lost my mom it was a sad sad time but i just felt that i had to take care
02:12of my brothers and i had to learn how to cook i was doing laundry doing everything and i had to pick up
02:20my boots and get up and keep on going
02:22at 19 i started working as a dietary aid at the baptist medical center of brooklyn
02:32one day at work i walked into the kitchen and i see this new guy there tall nice looking guy
02:42i met cheryl in 1984. some of the guys i work with they had told me about her
02:51he made me laugh because he used to wear his hat instead of it being the right way he used to wear
02:58it the wrong way but i liked it i was only 32 but she was 23 the first time i asked her out she said
03:07no but she came back and told me yes we had a good relationship we were just having a good time
03:17enjoying each other
03:18bobby was wonderful the only thing i noticed sometimes was that he didn't like to talk much
03:30about what his life was like before we met
03:33the only thing bobby told me about his childhood was that he was born in greensboro north carolina
03:40that he was really close to his sister and uh that that was that was it
03:48we dated the rest of that year 1984 it wasn't until about maybe after the summer of 1984
04:00when she told me she said bobby i'm pregnant
04:04and um i was scared so i went and i told him and he said okay he just said that we're gonna
04:14we're gonna get a place together and we're gonna work this out out of the blue i proposed to her
04:19and uh she started crying actually i said why are you crying she said i'm happy i didn't know you
04:26was gonna propose to me i said that's what you do you propose to the person when they least expect it
04:34and that's that's how it happened
04:37we got married on march 30th 1985
04:44the wedding was the first time i got to meet any of bobby's family i never got the chance to ask them
04:51anything about bobby's early life or his past because they didn't stay for long
04:57my family came up from greensboro and they took off right after the wedding
05:06you know we said our goodbyes because they had to get back
05:11i think if my brother raymond would have started drinking maybe he would have said something
05:17that i didn't want to hear him say about me
05:21the story in the family with bobby was beautiful jasmine love was born july 1985
05:36and then after jasmine jessica came september 1987
05:43and then justin and jordan came may 1998
05:50it was joy just pure joy we were so happy
05:54i felt like our family was complete and bobby was a wonderful father and provider
06:01bobby was a very hard worker he worked at yai young adult institute and they help people who have
06:10disabilities and then he worked at the nursing home as a cook in the bronx he had two jobs
06:17and he would go in early in the morning from six to two and then he would go into the next job
06:27and work from say like three to eleven bobby was perfect in every way except those rare occasions
06:39when it felt like he was hiding something from me
06:41not long after the twins were born bobby's brother passed away
06:47his brother leroy so i was sure i was going to go with him to support him and you know the family
06:58but bobby said to me no cheryl i'm gonna go i don't want you to go
07:05it felt a little weird because i've always known that family something happens in family
07:11you support each other but he told me no why does he not want me to be around his family
07:20she said to me she said you weren't trying to you know separate yourself from us and i just said
07:28sometimes i felt like i needed some space but i was lying i'm thinking does he have another family
07:36somewhere is it another woman somewhere i just felt like he was keeping something from me
07:42i was taking this secret to my grave and i only told one person at that time was my sister
07:49and she was asking me if you're gonna ever tell cheryl i said yeah i'm on my my deathbed
07:59i didn't know much of my dad's past more so when i asked him certain questions he would avoid answering
08:07fully there's one example i particularly remember i was just trying to figure out why every person in
08:14his family had a different last name and he had the last name well and he just said that um we all
08:20grew up with different fathers or different families and and that's how he answered it my dad
08:26i felt like he wanted to share but just a little bit it was definitely times where it was challenging
08:34whereas my dad was closed off and my mom was trying to push it out of him and
08:38and it was a lot of situations like that
08:40naming 2008 i got fired oh boy he was really hurt by losing that job he was closed off then
08:53and then once he lost the job he got further down
08:56i'm getting up going to work early in the morning he's still laying there and i'm like no this is not
09:10this ain't gonna cut the cookie right here no you're gonna have to get up and find a job
09:15i went out to stanton island to apply for a job out there and on that application they said you
09:22needed to be fingerprinted and uh i said i'm not letting nobody fingerprint me
09:28the next few years were a lot of ups and downs bobby was a good father and had a few jobs here and
09:40there but he got more and more distant and i found myself depending on my church for support
09:46for christmas they usually have a big program at church and so around christmas time 2014
09:54i was like are you gonna come with us this year are you gonna come and he said no
09:59and that's like to me it almost like that was the straw that broke the camel's back telling me no about that
10:06i knew cheryl was at her breaking point
10:10then on january 22nd 2015 everything shook loose everything changed
10:20i got up early because i had an ap calculus class
10:25my mom got up at five to make us breakfast and um it was a normal morning
10:32everybody else was still asleep it was just me and jordan up so we said a prayer
10:37and then he said okay ma i said all right have a good day i'll talk to you later
10:41and he went on out
10:43and i went and fixed me my peppermint tea
10:48and getting ready to you know stir it and drink it when there was this knock at the door
10:55it was a cold morning in january and i was making a hot cup of tea
11:08my life at that point was good
11:12we always had food on the table
11:14i was very strong in my faith
11:16i thought everything was fine
11:19and then there was a knock at the door
11:24me and cheryl's bed was in our living room
11:30because we gave the other three rooms to my kids
11:35so i woke up with the noise
11:37it was so loud like it was just like boom boom boom boom boom boom
11:42and when i opened that door
11:45police officers
11:51fbi
11:52guns drawn
11:54i'm like oh my god
11:56and said get back ma'am
11:58get back move back
11:59and i'm like oh my god
12:01what's going on
12:02it was about eight to twelve of them
12:06and some of them were still standing outside too
12:08they just came
12:10stood right next to the bed
12:12and i heard the cops say
12:14you had a long run
12:16i'm like what in the world
12:19they said what's your name
12:22and i said
12:23robbie love
12:24they said no your real name
12:26your given name
12:27and they just said to us
12:29you think you know who he is
12:30but you don't know who he really is
12:31cop says ma'am move back
12:34you don't know who this man is
12:37when he said that
12:40my heart dropped
12:43this is it
12:45this is what it is
12:47all these years
12:49that i've been wondering what's going on
12:52here it is right now
12:53so she said to me
13:00she said bobby what did you do
13:01i said sure this was a long time ago
13:03i didn't know what to do
13:12and so i just went on to work
13:15hoping that i would hear something
13:17from him or later or whatever
13:19and then i went back home
13:22and that's when the young lady called me
13:24and she told me
13:26that she was bobby's lawyer
13:28she said now when you go and see him
13:31you're going to
13:32look for walter miller
13:35i said oh
13:37is that the facility he's in
13:40she said no ma'am
13:42no that's not
13:44and my mom when she looked at me
13:48and she said jesse

13:56and i was just like what
13:59the next day
14:06we were able to go to rikers island
14:08to see bobby
14:09and when he came down
14:14to see us
14:15he was bawling crying
14:17and we were crying
14:19and we were just like
14:21what happened
14:23like
14:24what is all of this
14:26what did you do
14:27yeah i said bobby

14:38and i'm sorry
14:40i didn't tell you these things
14:43he laid it all out for us
14:45walter miller
14:47was a convicted bank robber
14:49who escaped from prison
14:51and was on the run
14:53for the last 37 years
14:55as bobby love
14:56it felt like a dream
14:58a bad dream
14:59so that's when he started
15:02to just tell us everything
15:03and me and my mom
15:06just sat there
15:07and we just listened
15:07to everything he had to say
15:09i was born in greensboro
15:15north carolina
15:16in 1950
15:19it was eight of us
15:21and i was number seven
15:22he didn't tell me
15:25these things before
15:26when i was nine years old
15:28my father died
15:29in a house fire
15:30and it was devastating
15:33to us
15:33i should have been
15:35staying out of trouble
15:36i had a paper route
15:38but my thinking is
15:40you know
15:40i'm
15:40gotta do something else
15:42to make some money
15:43i used to look
15:46in cars
15:47and if people
15:47left their monies
15:48or their pocketbooks
15:50or wallets
15:50in their cars
15:51and the car was open
15:52i would go in there
15:53and take the bag
15:54and get the money
15:55bobby told me
16:00that he got arrested
16:01for stealing
16:02and served 13 months
16:04in a juvenile facility
16:05then
16:07he moved
16:08from north carolina
16:09to washington dc
16:11where his brother lived
16:13bobby was still
16:15in high school
16:16but was also
16:17working different jobs
16:18one of my buddies
16:21was adjunal mccutcheon
16:23and we called him
16:24teen
16:24when i think about
16:27bobby
16:28what i remember
16:30about us
16:30initially meeting
16:31in dc
16:32was um
16:34bobby was fly
16:36he was fly
16:37back there
16:40during that time
16:40dc was wide open
16:42it was to me
16:43like a
16:44if i could coin it
16:45maybe like
16:45the wild west
16:46bobby said
16:53he was just a hustler
16:54just
16:55did what he had to do
16:57to survive
16:58to get things
16:58i would get in
17:00some more trouble
17:01and
17:03some of my friends
17:04was already
17:05doing
17:06certain things
17:07like robbing
17:08stores
17:10bobby was a
17:12stick-up boy
17:12this is what we
17:14used to call them
17:14stick-up boys
17:15the crew he was with
17:17these guys did banks
17:19they were bringing
17:20in big money
17:21the more my husband
17:26bobby told me
17:28about the things
17:29he kept secret
17:30all these years
17:31the worse
17:32it got
17:33i was like
17:34in shock
17:35i felt very
17:37shameful
17:37at that point
17:38i didn't want
17:40to tell anybody
17:40anything
17:41i didn't want
17:41to talk about it
17:42my biggest fear
17:44was like
17:44people would think
17:46well you've been
17:47with this man
17:48all these years
17:49all this time
17:49and you didn't
17:51know
17:52i don't think
17:53you didn't know
17:54anything
17:54i was angry
17:57at how
18:00he didn't
18:01like share
18:02his whole life
18:03with his wife
18:04because remember
18:05before the kids
18:06right
18:06is the wife
18:07so it's like
18:08why would you
18:09just tell your wife
18:11like everything
18:12you know
18:13like why would you
18:13hide this from her
18:14january the 20th
18:211969
18:22inauguration day
18:23for president
18:24richard nixon
18:25we decided
18:27that it wouldn't
18:28be that many
18:29cops on the street
18:30and we was
18:32going to rob
18:32this pharmacy
18:34over in
18:35southeast
18:35washington dc
18:36there was three
18:38of us
18:39and i had a gun
18:41and so
18:42when we announced
18:43this is a hold up
18:45and that's when
18:46i started looking
18:46for and putting
18:48the monies
18:48in the bag
18:49they had a
18:51silent alarm
18:52or something
18:52once i got
18:54out the door
18:55and the other
18:56two went out
18:57the door
18:57the cops
18:58was just
18:58coming in
18:59so i went
19:02between these
19:03two cars
19:03with my gun
19:04in my hand
19:04and i looked
19:06to my right
19:07and i got
19:08shot
19:09from my left
19:10they took
19:12bobby to the
19:13hospital
19:14and stitched
19:14him up
19:15but first
19:16they arrested
19:17him
19:17he was only
19:1818 years old
19:20still in high
19:21school
19:21i pleaded
19:23guilty to
19:24armed robbery
19:25because
19:27my lawyer
19:28told me
19:28your best
19:29bet
19:29is to plead
19:30guilty
19:31and
19:33the judge
19:33probably
19:34will send
19:35you to
19:35the youth
19:35place
19:37like youth
19:38offenders
19:39so that's
19:40what i
19:40ended up
19:41doing
19:41i served
19:4413 months
19:45at
19:45lawton
19:46youth
19:47facility
19:47i got
19:48out of
19:48there
19:48and i
19:49felt good
19:49about being
19:50out and
19:50everything
19:50like that
19:51but i
19:52needed more
19:53money for
19:54my life
19:54my lifestyle
19:55and i
19:57would talk
19:58to some
19:58of the guys
19:59that i was
19:59associated
19:59with
20:00and we
20:01would talk
20:01about how
20:02we can get
20:02this or how
20:03we can get
20:03that in the
20:04place we
20:04need to hit
20:05because they
20:06got a lot
20:07of money
20:07and stuff
20:08it was the
20:14summer of
20:141971
20:15i had just
20:16graduated high

20:17then a
20:19blue chrysler
20:20pulled up in
20:21front of my

20:28want to make
20:29some money
20:29they were on
20:32their way to

20:34bank
20:35and did i
20:36want to be
20:36a part of
20:37that
20:37so i went
20:44downtown
20:44and i stole
20:45a car
20:46the plan
20:50was to
20:51hit this
20:52credit union
20:53right there
20:53in the middle
20:54of nowhere
20:54and it was
20:55open
20:55so we went
20:58in there
20:58to rob
21:00it
21:00and then
21:01we took
21:03off
21:03unfortunately
21:05someone saw
21:06us and
21:06called the
21:07police
21:07and we
21:09were on
