00:00First, we hit the road with 135 classics in The Great Race.
00:23A nine-day rally where timing, teamwork, and family fuel every mile.
00:27Then we go deeper into the heart of the journey, where vintage flatheads and father-daughter
00:33teams carry the spirit of the competition across 2,300 miles.
00:38Back in the shop, Southfield Classics takes us under the skin of their all-electric SC31T,
00:44classic lines hiding a high-tech chassis.
00:47And finally, Sam unveils the long-awaited CRNSX, an icon reborn, 15 seasons in the making.
00:57We have 135-plus cars in The Great Race.
01:04Check points along the way that they don't know in advance, and so the goal is you're
01:08going to stay on target from start to finish.
01:11It's like family to me.
01:12Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard, it's a complete family member.
01:16It's an experience.
01:17All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:20Winning an ace in The Great Race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:24Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:27Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:28I guess we'll find out tonight.
01:30The Great Race is brought to you by Car Capsule.
01:33We preserve, protect, and present the finest vehicles in the world.
01:38So what we're doing here this morning is going to be getting our instructions so we can do
01:42the start of the race.
01:43Today we're going to be going to the Iowa 80 stop, which is the country's biggest truck
01:47stop.
01:48We're going to check out a couple of museums as well.
01:49And then we're going to go on to Waterloo.
01:51I don't know where we're spending the night, but I'm sure Doug knows where we're spending
01:54the night.
01:55Because remember guys, my job here is to drive the car.
01:58Drive the car, that's it.
02:00Last night when the race finished, the driver of the 110 Camaro, Tim Kiley, came to me and
02:10said that the pedal goes to the floor on the brakes.
02:13And so we pulled it inside.
02:16We thought there was something going on with the brakes.
02:18It turns out that the brakes were good.
02:21We jacked it up on the right to bleed the right side front.
02:25We jacked it up on the left.
02:26And when we did, we found that the wheel was wobbling.
02:29Well, the wheel wobbling was the actual issue that was making the brakes bad.
02:33So we went ahead and pulled the wheel off and found that one of the wheel bearings had gone bad.
02:38He's busy working on the car in the morning.
02:43I'm getting the instructions.
02:44Gotta hustle to get them all figured out.
02:46Because once we start driving, there ain't no writing going on.
02:49So it's a hoot.
02:50So this is the morning of the race and we have to get the car going.
02:54It's a lot more complicated than some of the cars on the race because it's older.
02:59It needs a little more love.
03:01Like for example, this morning I see that we lost the cap off our magneto.
03:05And so we just had to take some electrical tape and put the magneto back in place.
03:11We have to add oil like any other car.
03:14It doesn't drive like a normal car.
03:16This is your brake.
03:17So it's a hand operated brake instead of a foot operated brake.
03:20This is your shift lever.
03:23So those are your gears.
03:25Your throttle is in the middle here, which is a little bit weird.
03:28And then you have this advance and retard which moves the magneto and the distributor up and forward to make it run better.
03:37So it's a lot of things to kind of keep moving when you're driving a car like this because of the ancient technology.
03:45Actually this motor that's in the car was designed in 1905.
03:50It was originally designed by Mercedes out of Germany.
03:54And then America and France bought the plans to it in about 1910 and started putting it in their vehicles.
04:00And so this is a 1918 and it uses 1905 technology.
04:06It's a whole new world.
04:07I'm used to more of the racing style, faster, who gets there first kind of thing, drag racing or anything like that.
04:16So this is a whole different aspect of everything.
04:19You know, your time.
04:20You have to be places at certain times.
04:22Everything is so detailed and down to the very second.
04:25So it's very different but it's a lot of fun because of that.
04:29It like keeps your mind going constantly.
04:31There's so much to think about and everything.
04:33It's really something else.
04:34I'm a gearhead in training so pretty much everything is new.
04:37Over the last few years I've been exposing myself to different types of racing,
04:41different everything, automotive, gearhead.
04:44So this has been an amazing experience.
04:48I drove yesterday.
04:49I was definitely nervous.
04:51It helped that all of us, since everybody in the car, it was our first time.
04:55It was really helpful.
04:57I felt more comfortable making mistakes.
04:59And that's part of what I try to bring to the table,
05:02is sharing that I struggle.
05:05Sharing what it's like that we all start somewhere.
05:15Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:20Brought to you by the following companies.
05:22Brought to you by the FIANA,
05:47Brought to you by the FIANA.
05:48welcome back to sam's garage presented by nh oil undercoating the great race isn't just about speed
05:58it's about spirit families friends and vintage machines tackling 2300 miles of hidden checkpoints
06:05classic engines and unforgettable stops from flatheads to first timers this is heritage in
06:12motion the great race is brought to you by rod in supply we don't just sell them we race them
06:19our car is doing really well because it's a nissan right it's the only real import here the only thing
06:27i have is that to adjust the idle up a little bit because the year that it sat in oklahoma i don't
06:31know what happened maybe it was a gas but it's a little too high so what i'm going to do is lower
06:35it just a little bit and i don't even need tools i just need fingers right here we're going to go
06:40just like that you want to adjust your idle on a carburetor setup when it's fully warm complete
06:46operating temperature and that goes with you guys and your idle screws if you have mechanical throttle
06:51body if you have fuel injected make sure it's completely operating temperature the largest
06:57truck stop in the country you can see that we're in tornado alley by all the flags with the wind
07:01this is pretty cool because they're giving everybody a free tank of gas and when you guys finish up come
07:06in we'll top you off that's a really big deal it's a really big thank you guys we really appreciate
07:11you doing that whatever great these guys want over a hundred and fifty cars that's saying something and
07:16this is a very iconic truck stop it's even got a museum attached very cool if you guys are in the
07:22area and you're coming through you got to stop here whether you need gas or not we're on our way to
07:26muleen iowa i think it takes a lot of pressure off of them they have less to worry about they're consumed
07:35when they're in that vehicle during the day checking the boxes not missing any turns speeds they're reading
07:43everything managing the right speeds if they develop a problem we typically have been able to provide the
07:51tools and if necessary go hunt for an automobile parts shop to get the parts that are needed because
07:58those things do happen a couple years ago curtis thought he had some brake tools that he needed so
08:06i ran to the store bought the brake tools that he needed so we can get his car back together but
08:12it's that type of support he didn't have to worry about it we were there this is a 1930 ford model a and
08:19there's not much of the model a left of it it was it started out as a pickup truck a pickup roadster
08:25so the bed is gone the fenders are gone sideboards are gone we took off everything that you can to
08:31save weight pumped up the engine putting out 120 horse and doing great now all those things takes
08:38away points right you get penalized in some way or another the way that we did it is that we don't get
08:43penalized you're kidding me everything on the car is done in a way to not get penalized so we still
08:50run our original brakes original transmission original rear end six volt car wow that's
08:57impressive that is very cool so how'd you guys do today we got a one minute because we mutt it by one
09:03place and we erased it right it's difficult catching up one car at a time right so we had to do six of
09:08them so we had to really go balls out and catch took over enough cars and isn't that the funnest
09:14part though oh it's great next time if you could tell me what exit to get out of that'd be great
09:18yeah you know sam we weren't the only ones that missed that little spot you know but next time
09:23i'll make sure that we're doing the mile markers this way we take a look at and we've got to be far
09:29enough in front of it all the time so that that happens i wish it happened more often yeah so we went
09:3521 miles out of our way had to come 21 miles back and then we were chasing everyone down then we
09:40missed the right-hand turn but we missed it quickly and got right back on course still chase everybody
09:45else down and we got what 18 minutes so we cut that time by 22 minutes it's a mile a minute right
09:52mile yeah well at 60 miles an hour but we were running yeah we were way over there it was so much
09:58fun it was unbelievable
09:59you guys today vehicles have gotten double the price sometimes triple the price and we want to
10:14protect that investment and make sure that vehicle can last as long as possible on the road and that's
10:19where nhou comes in we have a completely new product nhou boss wax hybrid vehicles come in with
10:25major corrosion and and i don't mean like i mean surface rust but stuff that you shouldn't see on
10:31the undercarriage of the vehicle and that's the beginning right that's the beginning and and so
10:35people say they want to use our box wax great boss wax really isn't designed to go over rust and so
10:41we're happy to remove this rust and you know play games and whatever you know to get the surface the
10:47way we need it so what we did was we said okay how can we mitigate that rust and and and still offer
10:53them the warranty and so what we've done is we've made a product and it's compatible with gmc it'll
10:59displace moisture and oxygen when it does it's creeping and it takes about three months before it
11:04it solidifies and sails and so it allows that to pass through then it sails and you're not worried
11:11about encapsulation you know when you think about the maintenance is pennies to the dollar compared
11:15to replacing it and the investment money that you lose cheap insurance welcome back to more sam's
11:22garage presented by nhou
11:25we're back at southfield classics where heritage meets high tech this time it's all about the
11:38chassis boxed frames coil overs air ride and regen braking built from the ground up for the all
11:45electric sc31 t classic looks cutting edge performance continuing on with our theme here
11:54at southfield classics last year we showed you guys how they build the cab and this year we're
11:58going to go over the chassis and the chassis is really cool because they start with original frame
12:03rails that they modify to make the truck overall and this chassis is filled with all the hot rod components
12:09that we're all used to yep so this is an actual original chassis that we use that was underneath
12:14one of our mule trucks one of our test trucks so this is where we started all the modification process
12:19trying to figure out where everything actually went in place before we started building our new chassis
12:23so you start with a rail we start with the rails totally plain correct nothing on it you box it in
12:29we box all the frame rails and then we start adding the regular hot rod components the four nine
12:34inch rear end ladder bar suspension we make all our cross bracing all the new stuff wheelwood brakes
12:41quick performance nine inch rear end you got a four link setup in the back this particular one also
12:46has the option of an air back system correct this so this one has ride tech air ride system on it and
12:51that way it can you know basically air it out all the way to the ground that is very cool but if you
12:55wanted to you can get this with coilovers yeah so there's two options on our chassis for the three pack system
13:02is coilovers and air ride with the bigger truck the six pack system that has the further range
13:07it is air ride only and i'm noticing that you got a four puck caliper in the front you're going to go
13:12with a huge six puck 14 inch rotor you got standard brakes in the rear four puck as well and the reason
13:18being because this high voltage vehicle has regen braking correct with the regen that's you barely if
13:23you're running the regen you can actually turn it on and turn it off so you can use it if you if you don't
13:27you can intensify and you can intensify the region so we didn't really need big brakes because of the
13:33regen system it automatically breaks your motor as you let off on the acceleration and then basically
13:39your brakes are just to stop to be able to completely stop that is incredible everything here looks like
13:43it also will fit under the factory body with no raising the floor of the bed no and that was a big
13:49deal for us you know we're building trucks we wanted to be able to use it as a truck and it still be a
13:53truck so for us we wanted to keep standard bed height but be able to get all our components
13:58underneath it absolutely those little luxury yeah that's what makes this older little little smooth
14:03yeah little smooth things you know little touches that's what justifies the price you're buying a
14:08real high-end luxury vehicle that's capable in every way like we say it's bespoke so we're actually
14:14building it to the high-end by hand in-house we try to take care and pride in what we're building you
14:21know that's what it's all about high components high performance components that'll last a long
14:24time so that's really nice i love this this is a hot rod chassis correct it's super high-end we want
14:30to make sure that we keep it like i said we have to be able as a manufacturer to warranty it so in order
14:34to do that it takes a little bit better quality parts so we want to make sure we use the top of the
14:38line best quality we can get all right what are we looking at here so this is our sc31t chassis this is a
14:45brand new chassis and then what we're doing is we're modifying the battery pack location and how it mounts in
14:51the truck we're building it out from scratch so that it misses the firewall this one has coilovers
14:55on it qa1s qa1 see there you go another well-known name out there this is like a pre-fit stage the
15:01way we've got it sitting down with the bed on it we'll fit the cab one more time before it goes to
15:05paint and then we'll be assembling and this white color is that a primer what is that no so that's
15:10flat white that's actually the final color that is going to be the final color so this truck was put
15:15together for sema show and we're actually going back and kind of fixing some of the issues that we had
15:19with it before is this one going to be one of the ones that are for sale yeah this one will be for sale
15:25well join us next week when we come back to south silk plastics
15:28and we show you guys the motor setup and the battery
15:36sam's garage is presented by nh oil undercoating is brought to you by the following companies
15:49welcome back to sam's garage presented by nhou
16:12with 15 seasons in the making sam finally brings out the legendary crnsx
16:17born from a crx with an nsx swap back in 2000 this one-of-a-kind build blends history horsepower
16:26and heart a true nopey icon reborn for the next generation it's hard to imagine that it's been 15
16:34seasons for this guy to finally make it on sam's garage so back in 1999 madavi motorsports opened up
16:41me and my brother arish and we were doing honda swaps in droves we had done so many in the first year
16:47and a half of madavi motorsports that we got bored and so what happened was we got thinking and said
16:54let's do something totally crazy that no one's ever done so we got a crx from one of our customers i was
17:00able to get a complete nsx chunk that included the subframe which is what the nsx engine sits in so we took
17:06the whole unit cut out the floor in the trunk of this car and installed this back in 2000 me john
17:13kaufman and hugh hamilton john kaufman and i he was kms engineering he built a lot of the cylinder heads
17:19he was racing he was an engine builder and machinist unfortunately he is no longer with us
17:23so he helped us build the chassis took it back to madavi motorsports hugh hamilton who is also
17:30unfortunately no longer with us helped to wire up the whole thing so the whole thing is wired up with honda
17:36wiring so we took this back out cleaned it all up it runs like a champ and we're going to take
17:41it and showcase it at the show john pops also helped us maintain and fix the wiring on this and keep it
17:47up to date later in the years second decade we've had it he is also no longer with us unfortunately
17:53all the talent that has helped build this car and made it so successful is no longer with us however
17:58albert from uab that's why it says ufo by uab ultimate auto boutique he was one of the
18:04pioneers in fiberglass work back when the nopi nationals was very popular in the 2000s people
18:10spent a lot of money back then doing fiberglass work and fusing headlights and different stuff into
18:15their cars from different model cars so as you can see this used to be a solid metal honda crx back in
18:27the day because honda drag racing was so big they had one piece fiberglass front end so albert took this
18:33and called me up one day and said sam you know do you think i can run with my imagination and do what
18:37i want to do so you know what i would do what you want to do right so this is what he did he covered
18:42the front wheels he made it wide body he put a wide body in the rear cut the doors in half built brand
18:48new fiberglass doors that are in half made all the aerodynamics that you see underneath on top there's
18:54an icebox underneath that lid there's a fan with two scoops one going into the turbo the other one going into
18:59the super intercooler because we did put a super intercooler along with the mitsubishi 20g upgraded
19:05turbo on this it made 456 wheels at nine pounds of boost we also had a shot of nitrous on it back in
19:122002 we ran it at atlanta dragway and it ran 11.6 at 130 miles an hour and that was when we just had nitrous on it
19:24we took it home took nitrous off of it put turbocharger on it so this is an iconic car it's
19:29called the crnsx because it's a mix between a crx and an nsx so i love it you can't find a lot of
19:37this stuff anymore um modabi motorsports was all about doing engine swaps we built more horsepower than
19:43anyone i know in town because about the volume of cars that we built so we're going to take this car
19:48to echo park speedway september 13 14th nopi nationals next year 2026 third weekend of
19:55september if you guys missed it this year make sure to check out nopi google it look it up
19:59we'll have the nationals again in 2026 we're going to see you there and hopefully you guys will also see
20:03the crnsx be sure to check out sam's garage on these other media platforms send us questions
20:21and feedback to info at samsgaragetv.com from century-old racers to cutting-edge evs and one
20:30unforgettable crnsx this episode celebrates the past powers the present and looks to the future
20:37for performance thanks for watching sam's garage where every build has a story and every story
20:44drives us forward
20:53you
