00:00For a long time, fables are all we imagined of Neanderthals, our closest genetic cousins.
00:12And strange ideas began to develop about who Neanderthals really were.
00:18The folklore is that they wore little clothing, made grunting sounds, and were feeble-minded
00:24and aggressive.
00:25These ideas were based on pure imagination, not fact.
00:31And so, Neanderthals exist as fleeting images of simple cavemen.
00:37Like cartoons, they resemble half-naked caricatures of our most primitive, least interesting selves.
00:43There we imagine that they were capable of building lives that also had love, craft, music, and
00:55art.
00:57They certainly were successful at life in Europe.
01:00They lived there for almost 300,000 years, something that we may not be able to match.
01:05And, out of these imagined and extremely simplistic images, we have decided that we know what
01:12they and their lives were like.
01:15But are these ideas correct?
01:16Can we really know how Neanderthals looked, dressed, and acted?
01:22Please would.
