00:00Um, uh, listen, I, I heard something, uh, that before the, you know, the Grammys and the fame and all that stuff,
00:08and I know this doesn't surprise me at all, that you sang in your church choir.
00:11I did.
00:11Okay. A lot of great artists started off in the church choir.
00:16I'm curious how those early experiences...
00:17Pretty much everybody from the South started in the choir or even in the church.
00:21How did those early experiences form you as an artist and as a performer, someone relating to an audience?
00:27I was speaking with my friend, Jean-Baptiste. She's got, we can, Jean-Baptiste.
00:31I'm familiar with his work.
00:32Yeah, we love him, right?
00:34And we were talking about the theory of music and how part of it is, like, the theory, right?
00:39Writing it, understanding it, having a degree and understanding that part of it, learning the music, reading the notes,
00:44and then there's a spiritual side of it. There's a spirit of it.
00:47And I think I got that from the church, right?
00:49I never quite learned to read music, even though I have a honorary, uh, doctorate from Berklee.
00:54Uh...
00:55Berklee Academy, but, you know, it's a, it definitely is all about a spiritual connection.
01:04Obviously, you're singing hymns, you're singing for Christ, you know, you're singing to God,
01:09and, and, and it was really the beginning for me.
01:11My mom, she sang in the choir. She was the director of my, my, uh, church.
01:15And that was kind of like my entry point. Yeah.
01:17Do you have a favorite gospel song?
01:19Um, I do. Uh, it's, uh, Daryl Coley, uh, When Sunday Comes.
01:25Oh!
01:28Big reaction. Big reaction over there.
01:32Yeah, it's a good one, right?
01:34It's really good.
01:35And that was tonight's Name That Tune.
01:36Um, well, flash forward, uh, a few years, and we're seeing Sexy Usher.
01:44Sexy Usher with the ads, and, you know, the slow jams.
01:47How'd you go from Amazing Grace to, to Nice and Slow?
01:52How did, how do, how do we go from Choir Boy to this man?
01:58How'd you go from?
01:59How'd you go from?
