One day after debuting his newest group at the Lone Star Cafe, Jaco Pastorius continued with two similar concerts. Similarly, it featured Jaco on bass and vocals, Jerry González on trumpet and percussion, Alex Foster on saxophones, Hiram Bullock on guitar and vocals, and Ignacio Berroa (not pictured) on drums. Drummer Ricky Sebastian might have played the latter show, but I don't have the recording to confirm it.
The recording begins during "Dania," a contemporary jazz composition dedicated to the city Jaco frequented in his youth. It regularly featured a bass solo in the later years, and the one here is among my favourites. Next up is a very unique jam led by Hiram, which one commenter identified as War's "Slippin' into Darkness." While Jaco's not playing the original bassline, he might have heard this atypical funk song when it first came out in November 1971.
"Dolphin Dance" also includes a bass solo, and while "The Chicken" does not, it's just as interesting to me—I love the groovier 1984/85 takes. The unaccompanied bass solo that follows is very similar to the one from the second show of October 11: "Blackbird" and "America the Beautiful," along with some familiar phrases and quotes; not very interesting, but solid nonetheless.
This show ends with Jaco's typical concert closer, "Fannie Mae." He had been performing it since the late '60s, so by this point it was pretty automatic, yet enjoyable for its great solos. Unlike the previous day's recorded performance, this doesn't borrow lyrics from B. B. King's "Why I Sing the Blues."
After October 12, Jaco wouldn't be recorded again until thirteen days later, when he led a trio at Seventh Avenue South. The show featured a guest appearance by former Word of Mouth Band pianist Delmar Brown, and one song, "History," made it onto Live in New York City volume six. Next Friday's upload comes from a very rare alternate recording of this show, which I discovered a year or two ago.
