05:40I could also say isolation
05:42Like it feels really removed
05:44Intentionally
05:46Leaving the world behind
05:48How good's that?
05:50So that is the plan
05:52It's definitely a place for family and friends
05:54There's sort of an extended mob
05:56That's going to end up landing here with you
05:58To retreat
06:00To bring people together
06:02Tell me, what are you going to build here?
06:04I think it's probably going to be bigger than we first thought
06:06Because there's a hunter's hut that was already
06:08Pre-existing on the property which is very basic
06:10And that was, that's me
06:12I was quite happy just to slide in there
06:14And enjoy the tranquility of that
06:16But we took that idea to our architect
06:18And said this is what we want to do
06:20And then he came, I said come up with some concepts
06:24And that's what he did
06:26And he got excited, we got excited
06:28And here we are
06:30This sounds like a terrible relationship
06:32Richard and Erin's original idea of a farm style lodge
06:36Has ballooned into a building of epic proportions
06:40Set on a slab of over 400 square metres
06:43Architect Charlie Ellis
06:45Has designed a series of three wings
06:47Reminiscent of the blades of a windmill
06:49That aims to blend seamlessly into its environment
06:53One wing houses the three bedrooms for the family
06:56Another, the games room and guest accommodation
06:59And the third is dedicated to living and dining
07:02Which gazes out over the glistening Lake Sorrel
07:07Each wing is flanked by huge
07:09Seven and a half metre monolithic concrete chimneys
07:12That will be clad inside and out with dollarite stone
07:16Handpicked from the property by Richard, Erin and the kids
07:20That sense of bringing the outside into the home
07:25Extends throughout
07:26With timber lined cathedral ceilings
07:2832 thick reclaimed black butt window frames
07:32And a burnished concrete floor
07:34To complete the natural look
07:36Each wing is topped off
07:39With steep pitch gable roofs
07:41And even more dollarite outside
07:43In the form of walls, pavings
07:45And a giant pizza oven
07:47A backbreaking total of over 150 tonnes of stone
07:52Will need to be found and unearthed
07:54No small feet
07:56Indulging in high-end finishes
07:59And unrestricted views of the beautiful bush outside
08:02Richard and Erin have set themselves
08:04The monumental task of building
08:06A super-sized off-grid lodge
08:08In the hope that this will be a jaw-dropping jewel
08:11In the crown of this precious landscape
08:14So how often will you be using the place?
08:18I mean, is it a weekender?
08:19So this is going to be home eventually
08:21But I'll be up here
08:23You know, looking after the cattle
08:24And doing a few bits and pieces
08:25Yeah
08:26Looking after the cattle
08:27I mean, looking around me
08:28This is not sort of cattle country in my mind
08:30Yeah, it's an experiment
08:32So, you know, this is
08:33You're right, this is in cattle country
08:34But I thought, well, I'll give it a go
08:35I'm always, you know, wanting to push the boundaries
08:37And see how it works
08:39And if it works, great
08:40But if it doesn't, well, no problems
08:42Try something else
08:43Yeah
08:44And so there is a precondition
08:46I think it's fair for me to say
08:47That if he goes down the agricultural line
08:50It will be a completely separate part of the property
08:53Okay
08:54Yeah, because we don't want to disturb the natural
08:56The natural environment
08:57Yeah, the thing you've been attracted to
08:59Yes, that's exactly right
09:00In the first place
09:01It sounds like a big dream
09:03How long is this project going to take you?
09:05Oh, well, the builder thinks 14 months
09:08We reckon 19 months
09:09Yeah
09:1019 months
09:11Our plan is Christmas next year
09:12Christmas?
09:13Yeah
09:14It's always Christmas
09:15Always Christmas
09:16We're going to get in for Christmas
09:17Always Christmas?
09:18Yeah, yeah
09:1919 months then
09:20What about budget?
09:21How much are you going to spend?
09:22We're hoping that it'll come in under three
09:25At about 2.9 million, all inclusive
09:28And I mean, that does take into account
09:31That it's a very remote location
09:33It's a difficult build
09:34There's a lot of travel we have to pay for
09:36For all the subcontractors
09:38So it's definitely a lot more expensive
09:40Than building in Hobart or Launceston, for example
09:43Three million dollars gets you a pretty luxe offering
09:46Yes
09:47But as you said, given the travel
09:49And the size of it too
09:50400 squares is a pretty big building
09:52I think you're going to test your three million
09:53Yes
09:54But it's a marvellous undertaking
09:56And I have to say, just again
09:57This landscape that you're working in is so precious
10:00Yeah
10:01It's so wonderful
10:02It sounds to me like you're very tuned into it
10:04My concern is just the remoteness
10:06Really of it all
10:07And you've put a lot of faith in your builder
10:09We do
10:10So let's just hope that's well placed
10:12Yep
10:13Because there's a lot riding on that relationship
10:14More than normal
10:15Yep
10:16Because you can't just go down the road
10:17And pick another one
10:18No
10:23Erin and Richard are a bit like kids in a candy store
10:25Their eyes are way bigger than their stomachs
10:27They've got this glorious sight here
10:30Where anything is possible
10:31And a budget to match
10:32But I am a bit worried they're getting carried away by it all
10:36They say they want to get back to nature
10:38And lead the simple life
10:40But supersized houses require supersized amounts of work and maintenance
10:45Especially out here in the middle of nowhere
10:48But first they've got to get the house built
10:50And that's a giant task in itself
10:51I'll go out lock and then you go in and we'll do the far one
11:05It's midwinter and today the serenity of the central highlands is shattered by the sound of cranes, pumps and trucks
11:20After several weeks prepping the foundations, builder Phil is overseeing the laying of the concrete slab
11:26In the industry for over 20 years, he's never managed anything on this scale with so many confounding elements
11:33I think it's a really exciting project
11:38It does have a few challenges
11:41We get heavy rain during winter
11:44And it can be sunny one minute and snow in the next
11:48Compounded with the isolation
11:51Creates challenges that we're not used to
11:53With access for cranes
11:55Semi-trailers not able to get in
11:57So we've had to rethink how we get everything into site
12:02Just the proximity from anywhere really is not something we deal with every day
12:09There's a hut on site that we're using for accommodation
12:14And at times sharing it with the clients is going to be a very interesting process
12:20Hopefully Rich is still talking to me at the end of it
12:27A couple of weeks later the team are bracing themselves for the heroes of the home to take centre stage
12:34The chimneys
12:36I couldn't believe they got this machine down
12:39The tight spots down up here in the corner here
12:43The pressure of installing these massive chimney panels is immense
12:47Each one weighs up to six and a half tons
12:50And towers over seven metres tall
12:52Yeah, if they're not lifted properly they'll snap for sure
12:57It's dangerous, you know, it can really cause some damage
13:01So you've got to be on your game
13:04And there's major defects in the panels as far as dimensions go
13:09They don't fit, so we don't want to be going down that path
13:14Each chimney is made up of three concrete panels
13:17The perilous task of lifting them into place relies on a crane extending up to 36 metres
13:25With counterweights of 44 tonnes required to stop it falling over
13:30Down like 100
13:32Yeah, that 36 metre reach is right out there on the limit
13:36Just because the building site's probably a little bit more cluttered than we thought
13:39And the building's a lot longer and wider than we'd hoped
13:42This is where you can make or break your build
13:52The thinnest panel goes first
13:54A deceptively fragile piece for such a massive slab
14:01The design of it, it wants to crack through the window
14:05The sides of the window there
14:06So it's probably the most slimline difficult panel we're going to do
14:15It's a lot of weight
14:18Until the panel is upright, there's no knowing for sure if it can take the strain
14:25Up she goes
14:27Feel it?
14:28Wow
14:30So it's the inside chalk line is our panel line
14:35It's finally in position
14:37But now the crucial part
14:39Will it fit?
14:41Are you going to go in a bit?
14:42Oh
14:43Tell you what, she's not bad Blaze, you've got the receiver Blaze
14:54That is that bloody close, it's not funny
14:57I'm happy
14:59Don't say it very often, but I'm happy
15:01What do you think?
15:04It's big
15:06That's what I think
15:08We might have gone a bit too big
15:11I'll just, we'll get this unhook, we'll hook onto this one, pull it off
15:14I'll just double check the drawings
15:16A lot of work for one panel
15:18Hopefully, hopefully the rest go just as smoothly
15:24The enormity of this project is starting to dawn on Richard and Erin
15:29And they're not alone
15:30Nice and steady, it's nice and steady
15:44Simsie, it's not too late for a second story mate
15:51I think we're there anyway
15:55It will take two days for the remaining chimneys to be installed
15:58As each panel requires patience and precision
16:04Just come down and then I'll bring him back to me
16:08What's probably wowed me the most is the, um, yeah, the sheer size of these structures
16:15Yeah, I'll bring it around to ya
16:17Too sorry for the stonemason, he's got to get right up, up there to veneer the whole lot
16:24It's a massive job
16:25Hope he likes laying stones
16:32But they've got to find them first
16:35And that's not their only challenge
16:37On air, online, on digital radio
16:39There's a severe weather warning for large parts of the state this afternoon and evening
16:44As a strong cold front moves across the state
16:47Damaging and potentially destructive wind gusts of around 120 kilometres an hour
16:53Are forecast in some districts
16:58Over the next six weeks, the wild Tassie winds threaten to blow them off course
17:02Hold him there, just gotta put some backers underneath him
17:13But with the crew living on site
17:16They're able to work fast between storms to install the trusses and roof structures
17:23Yeah, I think it's, um, starting to come to life
17:29You can see, brings the height of the chimneys into play
17:33And they looked a bit too tall and skinny
17:35But now with the roof line, it brings it all into play
17:37And, um, yeah, it looks good
17:38Four months into the project, Richard and Erin are also making the most of the breaks in the weather
17:53Roaming the property and collecting hundreds, if not thousands, of dolarite stones
17:58A hard, once molten rock, some two to three hundred million years old
18:04That'll be used for cladding the giant chimneys and some walls
18:09For stonemason Ray Hilton, it's a massive undertaking
18:14Hey Ray, how are you?
18:17Looks good, looks really good
18:19Oh, thank you
18:20We're loving the colours, the greys and the browns
18:22You don't mind the mix of everything?
18:24No, I really like it
18:25How's the stone to work with?
18:27I mean, the picking's been awesome
18:29Like, really good quality
18:30Cool
18:31You've obviously got an eye for it
18:32We just need a lot more
18:33Okay
18:34Say you've picked 30 tonne
18:35Yeah
18:36And let's not look up until we've got another 150
18:40Right
18:41Yeah, right
18:42Okay
18:43So we've done roughly 20 loads so far
18:45We've probably got another 120 to go
18:49Don't count
18:51Yeah
18:52As long as you're staying ahead of me
18:53Yeah, okay
18:54That's the plan
18:55We've had a good head start though
18:56So I think you're going to use it up pretty quickly
18:58We'll have to get our skates on
19:02Yeah, I was hoping that he was going to tell us that we were halfway there
19:06But we're nowhere near halfway there
19:08How long ago did we start collecting stone?
19:10It was over a year ago
19:11Oh
19:12Geez, that long?
19:13It was over a year ago
19:14And he only
19:15Yeah, it was
19:16And he only started yesterday
19:17So he said that we're quite a way ahead of him
19:21But I'm very worried that he's going to catch up very quickly
19:24But they've got a lot more on their plate than just rock collecting
19:31Hey mate, it's time to go
19:33While Erin's back in Launceston managing the kids and the business
19:37Alright, shoes on
19:38Got your drink bottle
19:39We don't have time to do that
19:40We've got to get in the car
19:41Let's go
19:42Richard's spending more and more time on site and on his pet project
19:50So just finishing off this fence here
19:55We're planning for cattle and sheep in time to come
19:58The stockyards are sheep and cattle stockyards
20:01So it's plans to have these animals up here roaming around enjoying the property
20:06We can have up to, oh geez, 800 odd sheep
20:09Don't know if Erin would probably appreciate that being so many
20:13But we'll see
20:20When I was young my parents did separate very early on in the piece
20:24And my grandparents had a farm down the Tamar River
20:28Which I spent a lot of time with growing up
20:30Experiencing the wildlife and beauty of nature
20:33And work, working the land
20:35That in itself I suppose installed a lot of good work ethic and values that I have today
20:42To start a job and finish a job and tackle pretty much anything
20:46I'm really excited to what we are creating here
20:49Essentially going back to where I started
20:51With the animals and the bush and the space
20:54And I wish to pass it on to my children
20:57But so far the kids are not convinced
21:12Every single time I lift up a rock I'm scared
21:15There's going to be like a big monster underneath
21:18The only adventure they're having is rock collecting
21:22And the novelty is wearing thin
21:25There's like five fireplaces and massive big peach jars
21:30We're not including all the massive walls
21:32And we've got a huge pile of rocks just over there
21:36And to think that that big pile, hours and hours of work
21:39Has only gone into like not even half a wall
21:43It's just crazy
21:45The scale of all the rocks we're going to have to need
21:47Is going to be massive
21:50It's not going to be fun
21:52In a couple hundred more loads
21:54That's a massive fireplace
21:56You get a fireplace from all the stone
21:59It's now eight months into this 19 month project
22:16And I'm curious to see how they're getting on
22:18It's a bit of a rough road getting in here
22:22It's a bit like a rodeo jumping around all over the place
22:25But the remote location is the reason that Richard and Aaron chose this place
22:30It doesn't make it easy for building though
22:32It's hard to get stuff in and we're a long way from anywhere
22:35That adds to time and budget
22:39Added to that, just about every element of this build is massive
22:47Including today's challenge
22:49Wrangling some giant, extremely heavy timber frames into place
22:54G'day Richard
22:58Hey Anthony, how are you?
23:00I'm fabulous, how are you?
23:01Getting there
23:02It's looking pretty good
23:03It's all coming together
23:04I can see you've got a new delivery of beautiful window frames here
23:07Yeah
23:08Look at that timber, that is delicious
23:10It is
23:11All reclaimed black butt
23:12Reclaimed black butt
23:13And do you know where they've come from?
23:14From North Queensland from an old warehouse back in the 50s
23:17Okay
23:18Yeah
23:19I love the idea that you walk down your hallway
23:20And that history is just kind of whispering to you every time you walk past
23:23Yeah
23:24Yeah, it's gorgeous, isn't it?
23:25Yeah, it's nice
23:26And I'll tell you what though, you know those old timbers, they're really deep
23:28Yeah
23:29Lovely
23:30And really heavy
23:32Yeah
23:36So heavy in fact, the frames come in two halves
23:40Watch the board
23:42And need to be assembled on site
23:45Is it going to go?
23:46Yeah
23:47Only just
23:48If they can get them in
23:53Bloody off
23:54Back out again?
23:55Yeah
23:56And then back out through the side door?
23:57Yeah
23:58Righto
23:59It's bloody awkward, isn't it?
24:00I'll take a middle
24:01Watch that post, Elijah
24:02With both halves of what will be a corner window navigated inside
24:19The next challenge is joining them together
24:21Yeah
24:22Yeah, good job
24:23Pick out a little bit
24:24I haven't got much here left
24:25I haven't got much here left
24:26Is it going all right or is it?
24:27No, it's not stuck
24:28Are we too high?
24:29We've got to get the top in first
24:30Yeah
24:31Yeah
24:32Okay
24:33Come on
24:34What do you need, Douglas?
24:35Ah, a miracle
24:36So the thing about this house is it's so bespoke
24:49Everything is done to millimetre tolerance, which is perfect if you're in the workshop when you get on site, when you're used to working with much larger tolerances, trying to get something like that into a corner so you get frameless glass, that is, the glass paints have to meet perfectly
25:05There's a price to pay
25:08And they're paying it right now
25:10They're all going individually, they're just not going together
25:15Perplexing to say the least, the final throw of the dice, chiselling out the housing in the hope the pins will slide in
25:24All right, there we go
25:35Blaise, you're a wizard
25:40Blaise worked his magic with his little chisel
25:43Pardon the pun
25:46With the frames finally fixed, now comes the real test, the installation
25:52So we're just sliding it forward
25:55Ready?
25:56Yeah
25:57Go
26:02There you go in there, Declan
26:14Nope, nothing in
26:15This is one monster window frame, I tell you
26:18One, two, three, four, six, seven, eight, eight people moving this
26:25And it's like this
26:29Trying to get it in
26:33Just a little bit snug right in the middle there
26:40There you go
26:41Oh yeah
26:42That's it right now, come to me
26:45Yep, that's it
26:47We're in
26:48Happy?
26:49Yeah
26:53That's a mammoth effort that one
26:54That's a huge window
26:56That's uh, yeah
26:57Good to get that one in
26:58That's only one of them
27:02It's in, the window's in
27:03Yeah, glad it actually fitted
27:05Back's a bit sore, bit worse for wear
27:07You were doing some literal heavy lifting then
27:08We had to, they needed help because it was just so bloody heavy
27:14One down, only 31 to go
27:17And I thought they wanted a wilderness hideaway for some rest and relaxation
27:23If it's chill thereafter
27:25They could well look to a tiny property on Sydney's Hawkesbury River for inspiration
27:34Known as Murrah Murrah Shack, here the homeowner's quest for peace and tranquility
27:41Has informed every element of the design
27:44It's about a thirtieth the size of Richard and Erin's
27:47And by God it's cute
27:49There is a little jewel hiding on the hill, beautiful
27:52Designed by architect Leopold Bancini as an off-grid weekender for his young family
27:59The only way to get here is by boat
28:05Just don't blink or you'll float right on by
28:07Oh I love this, it's a less is more approach
28:20It's kind of like a boathouse, but it's not
28:23And that giant glass window, that's an invitation to come on up
28:26With non-combustible fibre cement cladding on the outside in case of bushfire
28:33Inside is a wholly more rustic story
28:38The inside is wall to wall timber
28:53Love this essay in Australian hardwoods
28:56Recycled columns from telegraph poles, iron bark
28:58We've got recycled turpentine planks here from the jetty out the front
29:03Even the furniture is made from the off-cuts of the spotted gum beams above our heads
29:09Everything here was made by hand
29:14And much of it on site
29:16From the kitchen sink
29:18To the furniture
29:19To the elegant dropped Cornet fireplace
29:23The space is uncluttered and elemental
29:26But at the same time dramatic
29:28Helped by all of that wood
29:30And the five metre high ceiling
29:34The way timber's been used in here
29:36It reminds me of a traditional Japanese tea house
29:39Or maybe even a Swiss mountain hut
29:41Somewhere in between perhaps
29:43But look at this
29:45This giant six metre window
29:46Is so big
29:47It had to be brought in piece by piece
29:50And welded on site
29:51And even though it's really heavy
29:53Check this out
29:54I should be able to open this up
29:56To this
29:58Magic view
30:06At only 59 metres square
30:08This really couldn't be more different
30:10To what Richard and Erin are building at Interlaken
30:13With just two small bedrooms and a bathroom out the back
30:16It's got everything the homeowners need
30:18But nothing more
30:20It's very crafted
30:22But not fancy
30:24A spare peaceful space
30:26To just be
30:28There might be some lessons in that
30:32And when the weekend's over
30:34It's no fuss
30:35It's just lock up and leave
30:37And that's my idea
30:39Of a relaxing home away from home
30:40But there's no relaxing back at Interlaken
31:02It's two weeks since the giant timber frames were installed
31:05But big frames need big panes of glass
31:09For something quite fragile
31:14They weigh a tonne
31:15Yeah, they look heavy
31:16They're going alright
31:18They're going to be tired by the end of the day
31:20We might need to give them a hand I think
31:2142 pieces in all
31:23And 40k an hour wins
31:25Yeah, so a bit of a breeze which is coming up
31:27A bit of a concern
31:28Making sure that those panels don't tip off
31:29Yeah
31:30But the boys are
31:31A bit of a breeze which is coming up
31:32A bit of a concern
31:33Yep
31:34But the boys are trying to get these glass panels in before the wind gets up
31:35Yeah
31:36Yeah, so a bit of a breeze which is coming up
31:37Yeah, so a bit of a breeze which is coming up
31:38A bit of a concern
31:39Making sure that those panels don't tip off
31:40Yep
31:41But the boys are trying to get these glass panels in before the wind gets up
31:43Right, how many of this? Not much room
31:45You're going to have to go up near feeder
32:03Right, how many of this? Not much room
32:06You're going to have to go up near her

35:01You can't just go home at the end of the day.
35:03You have to live away,
35:05eat average food,
35:07cold.
35:13It's a bit of a grind.
35:19It's also a bit crowded.
35:23With the project coming up to the one-year mark,
35:25on-site accommodation is at capacity.
35:30With the team bunking down in the hut,
35:33the shed...
35:35No, no, that's a microwave.
35:37That's a microwave.
35:39That's not you.
35:41I'm starving.
35:43..and a caravan for the boss.
35:45One of Interlaken's luxuries having a caravan.
35:49Hub-sized parma veal schnitzel.
35:55Schnitzel.
35:57We'll see.
35:58First time.
35:59You've had a few of these I've seen, so...
36:01My favourite one's the bacon carbonara one.
36:04That's good.
36:06Real good.
36:08So a bit of extra cheese in it,
36:09and bon appetit.
36:12Do you eat better here than at home?
36:14Yeah.
36:15Really?
36:16Yeah.
36:17Good, man.
36:19Obviously we're pretty remote,
36:22so definitely wearing thin on the team.
36:24It's a big ask to pull them away from friends and family
36:28for such a long period.
36:30We're kinda lucky that within our team everyone gets on really well.

47:05What a sensational room to walk into
47:08The sun streaming in here, this low winter sun
47:11And I'm like, oh that lake looking spectacular
47:15The bush is just this magnificent wallpaper
47:17Isn't it?
47:18Yeah, it's beautiful
47:18It's my favourite room in the house
47:20I get it
47:21I mean, the panorama is extraordinary
47:45I actually have an invoice to you for that, yeah
47:47I know another thing too, when we were talking about the slab
47:51you were worried about possums crawling across and leaving little footprints
47:54at one point, did any little prints get left?
47:56No, no we were fine, we had to have a possum come in of our own accord
48:00we left our skylight open, unaware
48:02and we had a little animal come in and visit us during the night, 3 o'clock in the morning
48:05The possum was in the bedroom
48:07Yeah, a little baby
48:07With you
48:09Somehow I feel being where you are
48:12that's not going to be the last time a possum walks in
48:14Well this is an incredibly successful space
48:17I mean it really feels so beautiful
48:19Thank you
48:19So natural
48:21And I think also the whole arrival sequence from the road to here
48:24Now we've got these little mini versions of that
48:27as we go from here down through the little bays of the home
48:30Can we go down and have a look?
48:31Yeah, there's more stone there
48:33More stone?
48:36With so much stone and glass
48:37the house is essentially a heat trap
48:40warm and cosy
48:41Helped in part by the heated slab and the giant wood-burning fireplaces
48:45How many is that you've got?
48:47Five in total
48:48Five fireplaces?
48:50And a fire pit
48:51There's plenty of firewood though
48:52Plenty of wood
48:53They're not going to run out
48:54I mean it's a beautiful object isn't it?
48:56I really like the way you've kind of let it just be the room
49:00That's taking the stage
49:01Nothing else to be said
49:02That's the piece of art
49:03Like there's no artwork in here
49:04That is, yeah
49:05That is the art
49:06Gorgeous
49:06I think too, you know, like in the dining area and in this room
49:10That could have been one giant pane of glass
49:12But I actually think you've done exactly the right thing
49:14Having those mullions in there
49:16Kind of break up that view
49:17It creates different pictures
49:19And it's funny you say that
49:20Because it was one pane of glass
49:21In the original concept
49:23Yeah
49:23Yeah
49:23And we changed it
49:24We thought it would be too much of a glass box
49:26Exactly
49:26Yeah
49:27Yeah
49:27Really neat
49:28The three separate wings of the house
49:34Actually give it a more intimate scale
49:36As well as the kitchen and lounge
49:39There's the guest wing
49:40Which can be shut down when not in use
49:42And then the family wing
49:44Oh, the art
49:45It's a beautiful gallery kind of approach here
49:47Yeah, thank you
49:48Including Erin and Richard's Sanctuary of Calm
49:52And so welcome to the final room
49:54This is the master bedroom
49:55Oh
49:58Yeah
49:58What a great way to end that whole journey
50:01Yeah
50:01Spectacular
50:02You've got this beautifully framed kind of
50:06I guess it's the best painting of all, isn't it?
50:09It is, yeah
50:10It is
50:10The layers of the stonework
50:12Framing out the box seat
50:13And then the wallabies jumping by outside
50:15Yeah
50:16And the landscape constantly changes
50:17I mean, you see it in the snow
50:18You see it in the rain
50:20You see it, beautiful blue skies
50:22Like we've got today
50:23Yeah
50:23When you kind of closed your eyes
50:25At the very beginning of this whole journey
50:26And imagined this
50:27Is this what you saw?
50:29This is better
50:30Oh, nice
50:31Yeah, it's better
50:32It is
50:32Waking up to this every morning
50:33And
50:34Exceeded expectations
50:35It has
50:35Yeah
50:36Tick
50:36It's worth it
50:37It's definitely worth it
50:38Richard and Erin
50:42Have definitely exceeded my expectations too
50:45As concerns about the home being too big
50:48Have somewhat been laid to rest
50:50Inside, dropped ceilings
50:54Have created a sense of proportion and intimacy
50:57While outside
50:58The home has a scale that sits into the landscape
51:01And doesn't dominate it
51:03Embracing the surroundings
51:04Rather than fighting them
51:06It really is wonderful to behold
51:08What an achievement
51:14It's a great house
51:15It feels fantastic
51:16It was sort of conceptualised
51:18As a bit of a circuit breaker for you both
51:19It would reset the family dynamic a bit
51:22Give you a bit of space
51:23Just take the pace off a little bit
51:25Has it done that?
51:27Well, the last two years, no
51:28It's been the opposite
51:29It's been
51:30I mean, I think it's fair to say
51:32We like to be busy
51:34We're people that want to be busy
51:35But the whole purpose was to change that direction
51:38Where our lives were going
51:40Yeah
51:40And just be busy in a different way
51:41What do the kids think?
51:43Oh, they love it
51:44And we're so grateful to them
51:46For, you know, being with us through the journey
51:48It hasn't been easy
51:49Every weekend for them
51:50Up here collecting stone
51:52But I think it's made us closer as a family
51:54I mean, I remember that time
51:56Specifically in this room
51:58After a long day of rock collecting
51:59When we were staying up in the cabin
52:02Where we all just got our camp chairs out
52:04And you got the portable barbecue
52:06And we were literally just here
52:07Having sausages on the barbie
52:09Looking out
52:10There was no windows or anything in
52:11Looking out
52:11Just at what it was going to be
52:14And it's just those
52:15I mean, you just create those moments, don't you?
52:17I mean, life's the little things
52:18At the end of the day, isn't it?
52:19Yeah, perfect
52:19Yeah
52:20Let's talk about how long it took
52:21You gave yourself a 19-month build time
52:25You said you were going to be in by Christmas
52:27Yep
52:28And?
52:29We were
52:29We did
52:29We did
52:30You were in by Christmas?
52:32Yep
52:32Yeah, yeah
52:33I'll have a little breath here
52:34That's the first time ever, I think
52:37We made it
52:37You made it
52:38Yeah
52:38But that stonework, that took forever, didn't it?
52:41Yeah, it did
52:41That was a commitment
52:42Yeah, no, and we knew that
52:43We knew the stonework was going to take longer
52:45Than the actual build itself
52:46Because there was lots of other elements
52:48Both internally and externally
52:50And to raise credit
52:51He was adding more himself
52:53And giving more suggestions
52:54That I think we should do this
52:55Which we hadn't planned
52:57But he wanted to do
52:58So it's a testament to him too
53:00To value add as well
53:01Owning the project
53:02Yeah, yeah, correct
53:03Seeing it through from start to finish
53:04Yeah
53:05So you're on time
53:06You've got high quality
53:07Which obviously means that you totally blew the budget
53:10Yeah, well, we did
53:12But it was worthwhile doing so
53:15You had, what was it?
53:152.9 million was the goal
53:17Yeah
53:18Where did you end up?
53:193.3
53:203.3
53:20Okay, actually in 10% over for a house this size
53:23This kind of quality
53:23Yeah
53:24You're kind of within tolerances, I think
53:26Oh, yeah, no, we're happy
53:27Yeah, yeah
53:28I mean, we've got a lot of work to do to
53:29To pay for it
53:30Pay it off
53:30But we're happy for the long-term result
53:33Yeah, yeah
53:34When you walk around the home
53:36Or you arrive after coming back up from the city
53:39You know, what is the favourite part of the home
53:40For both of you?
53:42Every time I stand behind the kitchen sink
53:44I'm just in a happy place
53:45Yeah, it's funny for me
53:47It's actually the driveway coming in
53:48Yeah, you love the driveway
53:49Yeah
53:49It's like a bit of a
53:51Well, that's your journey
53:52And then I've turned into the destination
53:54And as destinations go
54:05It's their own personal Nirvana
54:07Cozy enough for them and the kids
54:11But generous enough for extended family and friends
54:16And while plans to run cows and sheep
54:20Are on the back burner for now
54:21They've got plenty to keep them busy
54:24On behalf of Aaron and I
54:29We do want to say a big thank you to all of you
54:32Apart from Phil being the builder
54:34He's way on holiday
54:35He's having a lovely time
54:35We'll catch up with him later
54:37Charlie, the effort that you've put in
54:39Getting this place designed
54:40Something there
54:41And I truly appreciate

55:14This project was all about getting back to nature
55:25Little did Aaron and Richard realise
55:27That nature can be a very hard taskmaster
55:30What I love most about this place
55:34Is that it's of this place
55:36Stone by backbreaking stone
55:38And that's why it works
55:41Once again
55:42Mother Nature to the rescue
