00:00Look at us.
00:04Look at what they make you give.
00:06Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're examining the roles that actors had no choice but to follow through on for one reason or another,
00:12even if they might have preferred dropping out.
00:15Well, I knew you didn't bring me back because you liked me.
00:18I don't. Not.
00:21Everyone, Movie 43
00:23Considered one of the worst films to ever grace projectors, and not in a quirky The Room way,
00:282013's Movie 43 was made of uncomfortable, often shocking skits.
00:33Please don't tell me you're one of those girls that gets jealous of a guy's pet.
00:37Even if that pet is super silly?
00:40No, no, I just don't think he likes me very much.
00:44Yet its cast is incredible, featuring several Oscar winners.
00:47All it took was for the creators to secure Kate Winslet and Hugh Jackman, who then used the duo to attract other big names.
00:53One thing that helped was that the actors didn't know what other performers were doing with their sketches.
00:57Yet, despite that, producer Peter Farrelly stated that some tried to get out of the project, but they wouldn't let them.
01:04Justin Long's involvement helped to bring in longtime collaborator John Hodgman, who knew nothing about the project or that cameras were involved.
01:11It was all a clever ruse. I'm not speed dating.
01:14Some of you should remember I'm happily married.
01:16That's right!
01:17You were all there at the wedding.
01:18Natalie Wood, The Searchers
01:20Many people make errors when they're teenagers.
01:22Usually it's forgotten about until you need to sleep.
01:25And the brain replays the memory to torment you.
01:27Yet for Wood, her mistake seemingly took over her life for seven years.
01:30To appear in 1955's Rebel Without a Cause, the then 16-year-old had to sign a long-term contract with Warner Brothers.
01:37This meant Wood had no say in being cast in 1956's The Searchers, despite her still being at school during production.
01:44First I prayed to you, come and get me. Take me home. You didn't come.
01:51Feeling as though she was miscast, Wood wasn't keen on doing the part.
01:55Yet due to the contract she'd signed and pressure from her mother, she didn't have a choice.
01:59He knows he'll find, but where, oh Lord, Lord, where?
02:09Sylvester Stallone, Stop or My Mum Will Shoot
02:16I've got to change you.
02:18I can change you.
02:19Change you.
02:20Change you.
02:21Will you stop trying to change me?
02:25Back in the 80s and 90s, while still friends, Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were rivals,
02:30often going up against each other for similar roles.
02:32As the script for Stop or My Mum Will Shoot was circulating,
02:35Stallone was told by his team that if he didn't take the role,
02:38Schwarzenegger would.
02:39Well, he called his rival to see if he was interested,
02:42and Schwarzenegger stated that he called it brilliant.
02:44Then Sly called me and he says,
02:46Hey, have they ever talked to you about this movie?
02:49And I said, yes.
02:50I was thinking about doing it.
02:51I said, this is a really brilliant idea.
02:54However, that wasn't true.
02:56The future governor of California had read the script and hated it.
02:59With the rivalry on his mind, Stallone snapped up the part,
03:02which soon became known as one of his biggest career flops.
03:05However, both Stallone and Schwarzenegger have joked about the incident on talk shows in recent years.
03:09Because I'm telling you, if you don't do this thing, Stop or My Mum Will Shoot,
03:13He's in!
03:14He's in!
03:15I go, uh, okay, I'll do it.
03:17Thank you, Arnold.
03:18Oh, no, no, it didn't happen a couple of times.
03:20Ryan Reynolds, X-Men Origins, Wolverine.
03:22Great.
03:24I'm stuck in an elevator with five guys on a high-protein diet.
03:27Oh, wait.
03:28Dreams really do come true.
03:29Just shut it!
03:29Since as early as 2004, Reynolds had been tied to the Deadpool character after he was announced
03:34to play the starring role in a film helmed by his Blade Trinity director, David S. Goyer.
03:39However, it struggled for traction.
03:41When X-Men Origins' Wolverine was in the works, with Reynolds signed on for the part,
03:45he wasn't pleased with Deadpool's portrayal in the script.
03:48However, the film's executives gave the Canadian an ultimatum.
03:51Either play Wade Wilson or they'll get someone else.
03:54It was sort of like, play Deadpool in this movie or we'll get someone else to.
03:57And I just said, I'll do it, but it's the wrong version.
04:00It was, um, Deadpool wasn't correct in it.
04:02With no option, Reynolds, who later called it a frustrating experience,
04:06took the role as the film tarnished the comic book character by sewing his mouth shut,
04:10making the Merc with a Mouth into more of a silent mutant.
04:13Thankfully, he got to do the character properly multiple times later on.
04:16I remember telling one of the studio executives, I said, you guys are gonna,
04:19they're gonna, people are gonna go nuts over this.
04:21And he was like, I know, right?
04:23And I was like, no, not in a good way.
04:24No, nuts.
04:24No, no, no.
04:25People went insane.
04:26The Deadpool character, you can't do this to the Deadpool character.
04:28Jimon Honsu, Guardians of the Galaxy.
04:31Roman may have questions for you.
04:33Hey, you know what?
04:34There's another name you might know me by.
04:38Star-Lord.
04:40Who?
04:41One day, Honsu, one of the most underrated actors around,
04:44was hanging out with his young son when the topic of superheroes came up.
04:47His son stated that he wanted to be light-skinned like Spider-Man.
04:50This stuck with Honsu, as he realized there was a lack of diversity in comic book films.
04:55It was exciting.
04:56But it was also, I mean, I also wanted to be part of it,
04:59just, you know, be part of the Marvel Comics world.
05:02So when 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy came to him,
05:06he snapped up the role of Korath to show his son that there are non-white characters in big-budget
05:10superhero flicks.
05:11This added to the wave of diversity in the MCU and beyond.
05:14And Honsu would later switch to DC to play the wizard in 2019's Shazam,
05:19and its 2023 sequel.
05:21I am the last of the Council of Wizards,
05:26sworn to protect realms from the seven deadly sins.
05:30Richard Harris.
05:31Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
05:33As any grandparent has experienced,
05:35all it takes is a grandchild issuing a request for them to do anything to grant it.
05:39Well, Harris experienced this, but this time it involved his career.
05:42Executives really wanted the Irishman to portray Professor Albus Dumbledore
05:47in 2001's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
05:50This kind of mark cannot be seen.
05:52It lives in your very skin.
05:55What is it?
05:58Love, Harry.
05:59However, due to health problems and having to sign up for multiple films,
06:03Harris rejected the offer three times.
06:05Yet, when his granddaughter heard about this, she wasn't pleased.
06:08She threatened to not speak to her grandfather again if he didn't take the role.
06:12So, Harris, with his hands emotionally tied,
06:15took the offer and played the role across two films,
06:17before sadly passing away in 2002.
06:20I think the most amazing thing was my son was down,
06:22who's a movie maker, he's a director-writer,
06:25and he was down today on the set.
06:26He said, I can't believe how relaxed everybody is.
06:28Ben Affleck.
06:29Justice League.
06:30According to some reviewers for 2017's Justice League,
06:33they knew Affleck didn't want to be there.
06:35Well, later on, we discovered just how true this was.
06:37After having a great time as Batman in 2016's Batman vs. Superman Dawn of Justice,
06:43Affleck was ready for 2017's Justice League.
06:45However, with director Zack Snyder stepping down,
06:48and his replacement Joss Whedon reportedly causing issues on set,
06:52followed by personal problems,
06:53the actor was struggling.
06:55The last movie, because I was angry at Superman the whole time,
06:59it was a story of a different Batman,
07:00but this one is a little bit more probably familiar to fans.
07:04Affleck described it as the worst experience he'd had in acting,
07:07so much so that he was contemplating quitting the industry as he began drinking again.
07:12While he did enjoy making Zack Snyder's Justice League,
07:15the 2017 edition was bad enough to put him off directing a DC film in the future.
07:20I hear just, you know, nothing but really nice things about the movie,
07:23which was nice because that's not what I got from the critics.
07:25Natalie Portman.
07:26Thor.
07:27The Dark World.
07:28After 2011's Thor was a success,
07:30and the MCU was beginning to form,
07:32Marvel announced that Patty Jenkins was going to direct the sequel.
07:35However, two months after stating this,
07:37Jenkins departed from the project due to creative differences,
07:41and according to reports, Portman was livid.
07:44Sorry, I just needed to make sure you were real.
07:47It's been a very strange day.
07:48Oh, I am.
07:49Jane, where were you?
07:51She'd been a key supporter of giving Jenkins the role,
07:54which would have made her the first woman to direct an MCU project.
07:58While Portman played the role of Jane Foster,
07:59she made it clear it was under duress of a contract,
08:02and she reportedly refused to do reshoots,
08:04requiring others to step in.
08:06Unsurprisingly, she didn't return for 2017's Thor Ragnarok,
08:09but seemingly, time can heal some wounds,
08:12as Portman reprised her role in 2022's Thor Love and Thunder.
08:16If you can't say mighty Thor,
08:19I'll accept Dr. Jane Foster!
08:23Matt Damon.
08:24The Bourne Ultimatum.
08:25Beyond Damon being the face of the franchise,
08:27another constant in the Bourne universe was Tony Gilroy,
08:31who co-wrote the first and second films.
08:33However, when he was involved in 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum,
08:37that's where problems arose for Damon.
08:39He stated in an interview with GQ that Gilroy made a deal with Universal
08:43to write one draft with no notes or rewrites,
08:46and get a hefty paycheck.
08:48Yeah, yeah, I mean, because, you know, as an actor,
08:50you're supposed to be drawing on, you know,
08:54there's certainly, he has no idea who he is.
08:56Damon described the script as unreadable,
08:58and said that it would have ended Gilroy's career
09:00if it had been leaked publicly.
09:02However, contractually obliged, Damon had to do the film.
09:05The draft was reworked by several people,
09:07as Damon claimed Gilroy tried to get sole credit,
09:10which was rejected.
09:12Then do something about it.
09:14Everything you need is in there.
09:15Everything.
09:21Raoul Julia, Street Fighter.
09:23In 1994, Street Fighter, the film adaptation
09:25of the popular video game, dropped,
09:27and while panned critically,
09:29there was one highlight that the majority agrees on.
09:31Julia's portrayal as General M. Bison was incredible.
09:35For I beheld Satan, and he fell from heaven
09:41like lightning!
09:45Yet, what makes it even more impressive
09:47is that he did the role of the imposing villain
09:49as he was battling cancer.
09:50When the role was pitched to him,
09:52Julia mentioned it to his kids,
09:53whose eyes lit up as they were big fans of the game.
09:56With that in mind,
09:57he felt it was something that he had to do
09:59and signed up for the role.
10:01Sadly, Julia wouldn't be able to see the film
10:02come out to the general public,
10:04as he passed away a month before its release.
10:06Children play the video game,
10:09and as soon as I mentioned the title of the film,
10:14all of a sudden their faces lit up.
10:18Bruce Willis, Armageddon.
10:20So what's the verdict?
10:21They'll do it.
10:23They've made a few requests, though.
10:25Do you remember the 1997 sports rom-com Broadway brawler
10:28starring Bruce Willis and Maura Tierney?
10:31No?
10:32Well, you know why you don't?
10:33Because the movie never got made.
10:35Besides starring in the film,
10:37Willis was also a producer,
10:38and just three weeks into shooting,
10:40he demanded much of the crew be fired,
10:42including the director.
10:44This led the Walt Disney Company to shut it all down.
10:47While they could have sued Willis,
10:48they instead agreed to a deal
10:50in which he would make three movies
10:52for the company at a reduced rate,
10:54the first of which was Armageddon.
10:56Willis was paid just $3 million for the movie,
10:59as opposed to his going rate at the time,
11:01which was $20 million.
11:03Not a choice, a lack of options.
11:05Pierce Brosnan, Remington Steele.
11:07Have we met before?
11:09I don't think so.
11:10Odd.
11:11You look vaguely familiar.
11:12Pierce Brosnan became a star
11:13thanks to the 80s television show Remington Steele.
11:16It's probably thanks to that show
11:18that he was cast as James Bond.
11:20However, it was also because of that show
11:21that he didn't become Bond sooner.
11:24You see, the action TV series premiered in 1982
11:27and was cancelled in 1986,
11:29at which point Brosnan was offered the role of Bond
11:31in the upcoming film The Living Daylights.
11:34However, NBC then reversed their cancellation decision
11:37and Brosnan was contractually obligated
11:39to return to the series.
11:41Not wanting the character associated
11:43with a currently airing television series,
11:45the film's producers rescinded their offer
11:47and gave the role to Timothy Dalton.
11:49It would be eight years before Brosnan
11:51finally became Bond.
11:53James Bond.
11:54James Bond.
11:56Winona Ryder, Boys.
11:57Bud Valentine?
11:58You know there's a pitcher named Bud Valentine.
12:01He pitches for Pittsburgh.
12:04That's him.
12:05The film Boys, starring Winona Ryder and Lucas Haas,
12:08was both a critical and commercial failure back in 1996.
12:13And this probably didn't come as much of a shock
12:15to those who made it.
12:16Director Stacey Cochran has stated
12:18that she and the studio had a falling out
12:20and there was an extensive involuntary editing process.
12:24That ruined the movie.
12:25As for Ryder, in his biography of the actress,
12:28Nigel Goodall makes it clear
12:30that last-minute changes to the script
12:31had her regretting what she'd gotten herself into.
12:34But the contract was signed
12:35and she wasn't getting out of it
12:37even though she would have liked to.
12:39You wouldn't like it.
12:41Yes, I would.
12:43Not for long.
12:44Alec Baldwin.
12:46Rock of Ages.
12:47Here's a toast to all of us
12:49who are breaking our backs every day.
12:53At first, everything was great.
12:54Alec Baldwin signed on to be in Rock of Ages,
12:57excited to work with director Adam Shankman
12:59and some of the other stars like Tom Cruise.
13:01But the honeymoon ended early,
13:04as Baldwin admitted in an interview back in 2013.
13:07A week in, you go,
13:08oh God, what have I done?
13:10What he did was try and get out of it.
13:12While reporting at the time mentioned medical issues
13:15for Baldwin's desire to leave the production,
13:17it would appear that the truth
13:19is he just thought the film was going to suck.
13:21Needless to say,
13:22the studio didn't let him out of his deal.
13:25I'm not interested, sweetheart,
13:26and I need you two to get back to work right now.
13:28Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones.
13:30Remember me?
13:31You remember me.
13:32I live right down the street,
13:33down in the greenhouse.
13:35Mr. Harvey.
13:36Stanley Tucci didn't try to get out of his contract
13:38to star in The Lovely Bones
13:40because he hated the film.
13:41It was because he hated his character.
13:44Tucci plays George Harvey,
13:46a serial killer who targets youths,
13:48in the 2009 Peter Jackson movie.
13:51As he told Entertainment Weekly,
13:52it was a tough experience playing such a horrible person.
13:56He even questioned Jackson as to why he was cast
13:59and actively tried to get out of it
14:00before they began filming.
14:02Not only did he not get out of his contract,
14:04but he ended up getting an Oscar nomination
14:06for his performance.
14:08I have to go.
14:09I don't want you to leave.
14:12Val Kilmer, Top Gun.
14:14You!
14:18You are still dangerous.
14:24You can be my wingman anytime.
14:26That's right.
14:27It might sound crazy,
14:28but Val Kilmer basically had to be forced
14:30to play Iceman in Top Gun.
14:32Kilmer had already given Paramount 2 films
14:34in their three-movie deal,
14:36and he, as the math would indicate,
14:38owed them one more.
14:40Well, it was because of that deal
14:41that Kilmer even went to meet
14:43with the director of the film, Tony Scott.
14:45While he still didn't want to do it,
14:46finding the script silly,
14:48Scott, and his contractual obligations,
14:51convinced Kilmer to be in the film.
14:53He didn't need any convincing
14:54to reprise his role in the 2022 sequel,
14:57Top Gun Maverick.
14:58Kilmer even openly campaigned for it.
15:01One last thing.
15:03Who's the better pilot?
15:05You or me?
15:09This is a nice moment.
15:11Let's not ruin it.
15:12Brad Pitt, Troy.
15:13Nervous?
15:18Petrified.
15:18This 2004 sword and sandal epic
15:21was the eighth highest-grossing film of the year,
15:23and Brad Pitt did get some positive,
15:26critical comments regarding his performance.
15:28However, it wasn't a film
15:29that Pitt initially wanted to be in.
15:31But the studio sure did want him.
15:33In this case, the studio had the upper hand.
15:36You see, Pitt had pulled out
15:37of another film prior to that,
15:39and as a result, he owed the studio a movie.
15:42So, as he told the New York Times in 2019,
15:45I was put in Troy.
15:47We guess you could say
15:48that they found his Achilles heel.
15:50You're as fearless as the gods.
15:52I'm honoured to go to war with you.
15:55As am I.
15:56Shia LaBeouf.
15:57Transformers Dark of the Moon.
15:59This was all my fault.
16:01I told them whom to trust.
16:03I was so wrong.
16:05It's hard to believe,
16:06but Michael Bay actually made
16:08one decent Transformers movie.
16:10The first one, released in 2007,
16:12has a not-great, but-not-terrible
16:15Rotten Tomatoes score of 57%.
16:17It also grossed over $700 million.
16:20While the second one,
16:21Revenge of the Fallen,
16:22made even more money,
16:23it was critically panned,
16:25even by star Shia LaBeouf,
16:27who said,
16:28I wasn't impressed with what we did.
16:29Not wanting to be a part of a declining franchise,
16:32at least quality-wise,
16:33LaBeouf made a real effort to get out
16:35before the third movie.
16:36But there was the little thing of his signature
16:39on a contract for three films,
16:41so he was stuck.
16:43He definitely wasn't coming back for number four, though.
16:46Sam, that makes me feel bad.
16:48I hope you feel bad.
16:49You should feel bad.
16:50Bill Murray, Garfield, the movie.
16:52You can stop dreaming about me
16:54because I'm here.
16:56Now just wake up.
16:58You've got work to do.
17:00What actor wouldn't want to work with Joel Cohen?
17:03As one half of the Coen brothers,
17:05Joel is one of the great writers
17:06slash directors of his generation.
17:09According to Bill Murray,
17:10when he saw that Joel had written Garfield, the movie,
17:12he jumped at the chance to voice the titular cat.
17:15The only problem is that Garfield, the movie,
17:17was co-written by Joel Cohen, with a H,
17:21not Joel Cohen of the Coen brothers.
17:23By the time he realized his mistake,
17:25it was too late to back out.
17:27We should point out that the other co-writer of the film,
17:30Alex Sokolow, has called ball poo
17:33on Murray's story about the Coen mix-up.
17:35Who do you believe?
17:37So do you have any regrets?
17:42Garfield, maybe.
17:43Daniel Craig, multiple James Bond movies.
17:46I'm the money.
17:49Every penny of it.
17:51While some actors would surely jump at the chance to be James Bond,
17:54Daniel Craig was not such an actor.
17:56When he was offered the role as the next 007 back in 2005,
18:00it took him a little while, and some convincing,
18:02to accept the offer.
18:04While he garnered much praise, money, and stardom
18:06for his portrayal of the master spy,
18:08he only did five Bond films,
18:10because he was contractually obligated to do so.
18:13His desire to get out of the franchise
18:15definitely escalated after the disaster
18:17that was Quantum of Solace.
18:20However, according to Craig,
18:22it had started even earlier than that.
18:24I've been trying to get out of this
18:25from the very moment I got into it.
18:28You're not seriously going back there.
18:29I wouldn't dream of it.
18:34Jennifer Garner, Elektra.
18:36I'm not a good person to get involved with.
18:38After the critical failure that was Daredevil,
18:41Ben Affleck lucked out.
18:42No sequel for Matt Murdock.
18:45Jennifer Garner found herself contractually
18:47locked into what was, quite frankly,
18:49a spin-off movie that nobody wanted,
18:51Elektra.
18:52Yeah.
18:53I hated that.
18:56For Ben, it meant a simple cameo,
18:58which never even made it into the final cut.
19:00For Garner, it was a starring role
19:02in an arguably even worse film
19:04than the one that preceded it.
19:06The spin-off earned a paltry $56.7 million
19:08at the worldwide box office,
19:10and paired with Daredevil,
19:11is widely thought to have permanently damaged
19:13Garner's marketability as a star,
19:16which, at the time, had been on the rise.
19:18Don't worry.
19:20Death's not that bad.
19:21Edward Norton.
19:21The Italian Job.
19:23You can't let emotion into these things.
19:24This undeniably talented actor
19:26has gained somewhat of a reputation
19:27for being difficult to work with.
19:30As it turns out,
19:31that problem extends beyond his relationship
19:32with directors, editors, and co-stars,
19:35to studio heads as well.
19:37Like so many of our entries today,
19:38it would seem that a younger Edward Norton
19:40signed a multi-picture deal
19:42that, in hindsight,
19:43he wasn't so keen to honour.
19:45That wasn't the agreement.
19:46It was a contractual dispute
19:47that lasted a whopping five years,
19:50and one which fostered a lot of anger
19:52between the two parties,
19:53who seemingly could not agree on a picture.
19:56In the end,
19:56Norton was forced to star in The Italian Job,
19:59or go to court.
20:00This lovely dinner,
20:01sparking conversation,
20:03you still don't trust me?
20:04Keanu Reeves.
20:05The Watcher.
20:06Shall we dance?
20:07Imagine being told that you were legally obligated
20:09to do a film
20:09that, as far as you can remember,
20:11you never committed to.
20:13Though there were reports during filming
20:14that Reeves was dissatisfied,
20:16the whole story didn't come out
20:17until 12 months after the film's release,
20:20when Reeves' contractually obligated silence
20:22finally came to an end.
20:23Able to say his piece,
20:25he claimed that his signature was forged,
20:26but that he couldn't prove it.
20:28Coming immediately on the tale of mega-hit The Matrix,
20:31you can understand why being the villain in a film,
20:33whose script Keanu allegedly didn't find interesting,
20:37didn't work for the actor.
20:38However, seeking to avoid a legal battle,
20:40he reluctantly acquiesced.
20:42We're yin and yang.
20:46Black and white.
20:47Roy Scheider.
20:48Jaws 2.
20:49You people telling me I don't know what a shark looks like?
20:51After the first flick birthed the concept
20:53of a summer blockbuster,
20:54you'd think that every cast member
20:56who survived the original Jaws
20:57would be desperate to jump back in.
20:59Not star Roy Scheider,
21:01who only returned as penance
21:02for bailing out on another film.
21:04I love the shark!
21:07Let's just say, he made the wrong choice.
21:09Jaws 2 was a nightmare from pre-production
21:12through to its completion,
21:13with frequent rewrites,
21:15production delays,
21:16and struggles to find a suitable director.
21:18Roy Scheider was reportedly very unhappy throughout,
21:21but it meant his contract with Universal
21:22would be complete,
21:24and so he stuck it out.
21:26Too damn tired.
21:28The Universal movie he had quit?
21:30The critically acclaimed Deer Hunter,
21:32and in the starring role, no less.
21:34One shot is what it's all about.
21:35Deer has to be taken with one shot.
21:37Channing Tatum,
21:38G.I. Joe,
21:39The Rise of Cobra.
21:40Self-preservation.
21:42I'm taking you in, Rex.
21:43For young, up-and-coming stars,
21:45it can be tempting to sign multiple picture deals.
21:47Guaranteed work?
21:48Why not?
21:49But a few years down the line,
21:50and you could find yourself forced to play roles
21:52you hate in films that make you cringe.
21:54It's a lesson that Channing Tatum learned the hard way
21:57after signing a three-film deal with Paramount.
22:00I'm going to make you very unhappy.
22:02I'm already unhappy.
22:03G.I. Joe might have helped increase his public profile,
22:06but after the fact,
22:07he has been vocal about hating it,
22:09and very clear that he only accepted the role of Duke
22:11under fear of legal action.
22:13Drive it like you stole it.
22:15Emily Blunt, Gulliver's Travels.
22:17When do you return home, noble and awesome Gulliver?
22:20Talk about missed opportunities.
22:22In hindsight, Emily Blunt has claimed that she's happy
22:24that she didn't wind up in the role of Natasha Romanoff,
22:27aka Black Widow,
22:28given that women in superhero films
22:30tend to take the back seat to the male leads.
22:32Fair criticism.
22:34But to think that Gulliver's Travels
22:35was the reason that she didn't get the part?
22:37Well, that's just painful.
22:39It's just that I was talking with a giant
22:41and lost track of time.
22:42I trust not this piece.
22:44As Variety reported in 2009,
22:46a contract signed with 20th Century Fox
22:49back when Blunt played a role in The Devil Wears Prada
22:52gave them enough leverage to force her participation.
22:56And so, Emily Blunt missed out on the MCU
22:58and instead got to play the pint-sized Princess Mary.
23:02Now you're being cruel and, frankly, melodramatic
23:05and acting like a complete baby.
23:07Mike Myers, The Cat in the Hat
23:09Look at your face, it looks like you saw a monster.
23:12A monster? Where?
23:16For those who grew up loving The Cat in the Hat
23:18and Dr. Seuss's other colourful stories,
23:20this movie might have felt like a slap in the face.
23:23And though Mike Myers has made some rather questionable movie choices
23:26over the years,
23:27it seems that his participation in this particular travesty
23:30was not of his own volition.
23:32Why, I'm The Cat in the Hat!
23:34When a script bringing his SNL character Dieter to life
23:37proved sub-par,
23:39Myers reportedly backed out of the film
23:41and Universal sued.
23:43It was ultimately settled out of court
23:44and the details are murky,
23:46but the consensus is
23:47The Cat in the Hat was the compromise.
23:50According to co-star Amy Hill,
23:52Myers' disdain was rather palpable on set.
23:55Without my hat, I'm just your garden-variety,
23:57six-foot-tall talking cat.
23:59Gina Davis, Cutthroat Island
24:01Bad dog.
24:05This action-adventure rom-com is widely recognised
24:08as one of the biggest box office flops in cinematic history
24:11and the film that took pirate films off the map
24:13until Disney took on the genre years later.
24:16Cutthroat Island would not have involved Gina Davis
24:19if she'd had her way.
24:20When co-star Michael Douglas dropped out of the film,
24:23Davis saw the winds changing
24:25and tried to jump ship as well.
24:27Unfortunately for her,
24:28unlike Michael Douglas,
24:29her participation had already been made legally binding.
24:32Stop dittling, you killed the man!
24:34In addition to sinking production company
24:36Carol Coe Pictures,
24:38it is also remembered as the film
24:39that irreparably damaged Gina Davis' career.
24:42Sweetheart, I promised I'd take care of you.
24:46Marlon Brando, Desiree
24:48What exactly do you wish to be?
24:50Unlike so many other films on our list today,
24:52this 1954 picture by 20th Century Fox
24:55was reasonably well-received by critics,
24:57earning two Academy Award nominations
24:59for costume design and art direction.
25:01The film is far from a masterpiece
25:03and, as far as Brando's filmography is concerned,
25:06is a little more than a forgettable footnote.
25:08Had Brando gotten his way, though,
25:10it wouldn't have had a place on his resume whatsoever.
25:12I must go now.
25:13Say goodbye to my family.
25:14I'm leaving for Paris in the morning.
25:15However, after signing on to play in The Egyptian
25:18from 20th Century Fox,
25:20he walked away due to problems with the script.
25:22Fox sued,
25:23and Desiree served as the forgettable compromise
25:25between the actor and the studio.
25:27French standards in the dirt.

25:43Whoopi Goldberg, Theodore Rex
25:47What are you doing?
25:49Kids these days aren't very familiar with Whoopi Goldberg,
25:51but the EGOT winner was once a truly marketable star.
25:55Though she continued to land some solid roles
25:57after this farce of a film,
25:58it's hard not to draw a correlation
26:00between the overall dip in quality roles
26:02and her involvement with the one Theodore Rex.
26:05Get me down.
26:08Now!
26:09Goldberg verbally agreed to do the film in 1992
26:11and then tried to back out,
26:13only to be hit with a $20 million lawsuit.
26:17In the end, Goldberg begrudgingly played the part,
26:20but continues to insist that it's one of her biggest regrets.
26:23After terrible test screenings,
26:24the film was sent straight to video.
26:27Duh.
26:28If any of these actors mentioned in the video
26:30didn't have to do the part that they were forced to perform,
26:32who would you select to replace them?
