00:00David, the good news last night for you, I guess, is that Jordan Pickles signing his new contract?
00:08Yeah, really pleased. Good news that we got James Tarkovsky signed as well, Jordan, Jared in the summer as well.
00:15So, pleased. I think there have been three players who have made a big difference to the team.
00:20Certainly since I've come in, I think they've done a great job. So, we're really pleased to get Jordan tied up as well.
00:26Again, during an international break, there's the questioning of his ambition,
00:31because he hasn't moved to a so-called big of club, sometimes questioning of his selections.
00:35Do you find that odd when you look at the form he's been in for a long time now?
00:39Well, I had him at Sunderland and I always thought he was going to be a top goalkeeper.
00:43He was very, very good as a young goalkeeper. He's continued to develop throughout his career.
00:49I always laugh about it and I say there's always some mad moments with Jordan,
00:53but I've got to say there's always some brilliant moments as well because how good his goalkeeping has been.
00:58I mean, I think the point is Jordan's the best goalkeeper in England or somebody else would be playing instead of him.
01:04And he continues to do so. I think his clean sheet numbers over the years have been fantastic.
01:10So, good credit to him, great credit to him. And, you know, hopefully the good times are still to come for Jordan as well.
01:17And is he at that age where, you know, he can help you in the dressing room now with that experience?
01:22He certainly is and he does already. You know, he's a big voice. He's an important player.
01:26He's certainly one of the senior players here, that's for sure.
01:29And he's been very good, you know, since I've been back. He's been excellent.
01:35But I wasn't surprised because obviously when I had him at Sunderland, he was a really, really good young goalkeeper.
01:42Looking at the head of the weekend, no Jack Grealish. Obviously, he'll be a miss for you.
01:47But it means you can bring somebody else in and give somebody else a chance.
01:51Yeah, Jack will be a miss for us because he's played so well.
01:55But we knew that when we came to play Manchester City on loan from there.
01:59So, it wasn't something which wasn't expected.
02:02So, yeah, we'll rejig, get ready and get ready to go against Man City.
02:08And on the plus side, you've got Kieran back.
02:10Yeah, Kieran back after a ridiculous two Bukuns got him suspended.
02:16But thankfully, we had a great win against Crystal Palace, you know, without him in the team.
02:20So, we'll have him back in amongst it, that's for sure.
02:24And when you look at, you know, the substitute performances from Beto and also Alcaraz last game,
02:31do they obviously come into your thinking for this?
02:34Yeah, well, they all do.
02:36But I think more importantly, what you've said is the difference the substitutes came on and made is part of the job.
02:41I think we're hearing about it more often and seen it more often now with the squad of players.
02:46A lot of the teams have got in the Premier League.
02:48We have to try and be that as well.
02:50We need people to come off the bench and make a difference.
02:52And thankfully, in the last game, they did do.
02:55And is there any other team news?
02:57You know, how it's coming?
02:58Yeah, we've got a few people, you know.
03:01We've got Jared back in the grass.
03:03We've got Merlin back in the grass.
03:05Unfortunately, Pato picked up an injury in the 21's game in midweek.
03:10So we've got bits and pieces going on.
03:13But all the clubs will be the same.
03:15Everybody's coming back from international duty, trying to get their players back, get them ready,
03:19find out what condition they're in.
03:21So we are no different from MDLs.
03:23Just finally from me on Manchester City.
03:26I think signs that they're getting their mojo back a little bit this season.
03:29I hope not.
03:31But I have to say, I think Pep's probably been, certainly in the last couple of decades or certainly one decade,
03:41he's certainly been as good as MD there is in any country.
03:46His teams have been excellent.
03:47They've been a blueprint for so many clubs and young coaches to look to.
03:52But it's also good to understand that, you know, he realises at times he has to change as well and do things differently.
03:59And I think that's important for young managers to see that, you know, at times you do need to change.
04:04Even the best managers need to adapt and look to alter things when they think the best way to get a result is another direction.
04:12There's been a lot of talk about managers changing styles, isn't there?
04:15Is this something that you, as you've suggested, you have to do as a manager?
04:19Well, I think if you've got the top players, which he has, he probably doesn't need to change very often.
04:24But he did show that at times, if he felt as if he needed to do, he can do so.
04:28And I would expect it.
04:29You know, I think it's very difficult for managers always to be successful
04:33and continuing going up the way at times, you know, you'll have ups and downs.
04:37Man City maybe in recent months of, you know, sort of change, changing their squad around, looking to rebuild.
04:44So during that period, you can get some strange results.

04:55Just picking up on that point about City and sort of making some changes, adjusting.
05:01What sort of changes have you seen from them this season, do you think?
05:05Well, I don't think I've seen big, big changes in their style.
05:10I think we're only referring probably to one game where he changes in one game.
05:14So I don't think that that means that he's changed completely.
05:16All he's done is been a bit more adaptable.
05:19But I think the Man City we've known who were probably over years were nearly unstoppable.
05:25You know, I think at the moment there's a more chance where you could get a result against Manchester City.
05:29Still very, very difficult to do so.
05:31But I think teams have gone and done it and we have to try and do it as well.
05:36I know Jack Grealish obviously can't play, but has he given you any insight or anything, any little added things that you can think about?
05:45No, it's not the way I work.
05:46I'm not really that interested in going to the players and asking for it.
05:49But I think it's, I just don't like the thought of going and trying to get secrets off Emerson.
05:55No, I don't do that, no.
05:56Fair enough.
05:57Just going back to Jordan Pickford, obviously you work with him at Sunderland.
06:02How have you seen him, I guess, change and develop over the years?
06:07And how happy are you to be working with him again?
06:10Well, I've got to say, as a young goalkeeper, he was fabulous.
06:13And, you know, unfortunately, the year I was at Sunderland, we'd get relegated.
06:16But if it hadn't been for Jordan, we'd have been relegated a lot earlier.
06:19He was so good.
06:22He's always been a great shot stopper.
06:25He's always been a great kicker of the ball as well.
06:29And those actions, I think, in modern football, he's improved his general play as well and his understanding.
06:35I just think that overall he's, well, he's been England's number one for, what's it, three or four hundred games he's had now?
06:42Eight caps for England.
06:45Eight caps for England, yeah.
06:47So I think if you're doing that, then it's showing longevity as well in his role.
06:51And there's been challengers, but he's, at the moment, he's fended them off.
06:55I think the amount of clean sheets he's had forever and over the recent seasons has played a big part in that.

07:06You had the conversation where you recommended him to Everton as well.
07:09Do you remember that conversation and how it went?
07:11Yeah.
07:12And how did you sell him, or did you not have to sell him at all?
07:14No, at that time, you know, I was still and was always close with Bill Kenwright and a lot of the people connected to Everton at the time.
07:21And when I'd left, he'd asked me about, you know, the people there and I said the goalkeeper was an outstanding goalkeeper, young goalkeeper.
07:29And I think they signed, did Everton sign him in that summer then?
07:32Yeah, I think they did, yeah.
07:33They haven't got him in that summer.
07:35So, I think that was 25 million.
07:39It was good money for Sunderland at that time, 25 million was a good price.
07:45Obviously, they wouldn't want to lose their goalkeeper, but we're probably getting relegated meant that he would probably have to move on.
07:53James Tarkovsky has also signed a new deal in the international break.
07:57What has he brought since you have joined the club again?
08:01And also, why is it important to get these deals done now?
08:05Well, I think it's important that we get the parts of the side which we feel have been really good.
08:10And I think recently, and before I came in as well, I said several times, you know, defensively, it was probably the strongest area of the field.
08:18Jared Bransway, Tarkey, the goalkeeper, had done brilliantly well.
08:23But Tarkey's done really well, he's been a big leader for us as well.
08:28Big man, takes responsibility.
08:30I know he had a small injury, but in the main, very rarely injured.
08:34Always fit to play.
08:36So, from that point of view, you know, those things all add up to someone who you're getting good value for.
08:45You'll need to keep working like everybody else.
08:47The contract doesn't mean that he's, things that are given, but we know that we've got someone who we can rely on and we can trust.
08:55Dwight McNeil played in the week for the under-21s.
08:58What does he have to do?
09:00I know he's had a few injuries in the last 12 months or so, but what does he have to do to force his way into the starting XI?
09:07He has to keep pushing to get in the side.
09:10You know, there's, as you can see, we've changed a few players in the attacking areas.
09:15We're trying to improve there.
09:17Dwight can give us something which we want, which is he's got ability to create goals, make goals, but he's got competition now.
09:27You know, and I think maybe this time last year, maybe Dwight could have been probably Everton's best player.
09:33You know, and he was injured when I first came in, so he has to get back to that and show that.
09:38And as I said, he's got sort of stiff opposition in front of him, but he done okay for the 21s the other night.
09:46I know it's been mentioned that, you know, Beto came on against Palace and he was instrumental in changing the game at times.
09:52And what does he have to do then to be more prolific in front of goal?
09:57Is that something you keep working with him and having the discussions and how can you, how can you get the best out of Beto?
10:03Well, I think every Evertonian has seen as much as what I've seen and has done.
10:09Of course we're working every day with him.
10:11And the thing about it is it's not that we want to, the boy is mad to do the work.
10:15He's a brilliant, brilliant lad.
10:17His work, his dedication to try and improve himself is second to none.
10:23So you can only praise him for that.
10:25What do we want him to do?
10:27We want him to get back to what he was doing, running away from people, scoring goals.
10:30He probably, when I came in last year, probably had eight or nine 1v1s at different times.
10:36But maybe the way we're playing, we've had more of the ball.
10:40We're playing slightly different now, which has meant that maybe he hasn't had quite as much room to run into behind him.
10:47But it still doesn't take away that we still want him to score goals.
10:51And he's got a couple.
10:52He's just scored the header last week with Jack Getz, but it doesn't matter if we've got the goal.
10:57Can you overthink it as a striker?
11:00Well, I've never been a striker, but I'm sure strikers would tell you, you know,
11:05simple try, keep doing the right things, get in the right places, keep hitting the target,
11:09hoping that one will go through the goalie's legs and you get another goal.
11:12And that gets you off and running sometimes.
11:14So, I think he got in the right position for the header, what Ellie set up for him for the second goal.
11:20And the keeper made a good save.
11:22So, if you're a striker and you want to score that though and make sure it's your goal.
11:27And the one thing I do know about Beto, he wants to score.
