Darwin hosts Mini Paralympics to find talent ahead of 2032 games

Darwin has hosted its first mini-Paralympics hoping to find the next cohort of Australians with disability to excel within the sporting community. It was also a chance for young Territorians both those with disabilities and the able bodied to try some paralympic events.

00:08Yeah, it's been amazing.

00:10What's been the most fun part about today?

00:16Seeing everyone having fun.

00:20Organisers say it's about giving kids with disability and their classmates a taste of

00:25sport that's accessible to everyone.

00:26We're doing wheelchair basketball, athletics, badminton, seated volleyball, goalball, boccia.

00:33This is the first time boccia is on show in Darwin.

00:36Think of it as like lawn balls.

00:38So it's played with soft leather balls so participants throw the ball either over arm or under arm.

00:44What's the point of the game?

00:45You have to get it to the right ball.

00:51Have you been able to do that yet?

00:53Yeah.

00:54It's a really great sport for anyone, even able-bodied athletes as well, but obviously

00:58it's a para sport.

01:00So bringing a sport like boccia up here, it just opens a lot of doors.

01:04Around 100 school kids have come here today, testing their skills in new sports such as

01:08boccia and goalball.

01:09For some, this could be the start of a very exciting Paralympic journey.

01:13For students, it's a chance to learn something new.

01:16Yeah, lots of fun.

01:18Goal by the end of the day is to make at least three new friends and yeah, lots of fun to

01:24be out of school for the whole day.

01:26The Australian Paralympic committee says events like this are vital in taking kids from the

01:31schoolyard to sport.

01:33Just trying to really build the pathway and the support for people that want to transition

01:37into those sports within the community and take it as far as they want on their own little

01:43journey.

01:44Organisers hope Darwin's mini Paralympics will now become an annual event.
