00:00Well it's a change of scenery for Argentina. Not so much from the knockout
00:08stage where Santiago has been home. They played their group stage matches in
00:16Valparaiso, Colombia. This is their first game in the capital. All five previous
00:22matches in this FIFA under 20 World Cup for Colombia in Talca.
00:52The prize is enormous. The biggest of their young careers, certainly in an
00:58international shirt. South America will have representation in this Sunday's
01:04FIFA under 20 World Cup final here in Santiago. Will it be Argentina or
01:08Colombia to play Morocco?
01:12Morocco proudly flying the flag for Africa and have just eliminated France
01:22in a dramatic penalty shootout in Valparaiso. Only finished a few minutes ago.
01:30Morocco winning 5-4 on spot kicks after it finished 1-1 after extra time.
01:37There has only ever been one African winner of this tournament. And it was way back in
01:462009, Ghana. Squad led by Andre Ayew. But Morocco are there. We find out here in
01:58Santiago who they will meet. Both teams in their national colours.
02:11Diego Placente, who won the World Cup at under 20 level with Argentina back in 1997.
02:23This is Julian Bazan, who has kept his place in the team. The number 4 at the bottom of your screen. Near side.
02:38played very well in the quarter-final. Deputising for the suspended.
02:56Simon Garcia. And Garcia is back in the defence but Bazan has kept his place.
03:03Here is Simon Garcia who had started every match prior to his suspension for that quarter-final win over Spain. What a match it was. Here's Delgado for Argentina.
03:21The referee in a very good position. Joao Pinheiro of Portugal spotting the foul on Delgado.
03:28It certainly was a foul by the Colombia captain, Kenna Gonzalez.
03:36Cesar Torres. Cesar Torres took over the Colombia under 20s in May 2024.
03:51Started off as a youth coach at Boca Juniors de Cali. Cali his home city. This is his first national job.
03:58And hoping to do what nobody else has done before. Take Colombia's under 20s to a World Cup final.
04:10It's Argentina looking to press.
04:14and then he's got over the World Cup final.
04:19Subhiabre can't find any room.
04:21And the referee gives a free-kick to Colombia.
04:25Hand of apology from Subhiabre.
04:30Has a Chilean background. The Argentina number 11. His paternal grandparents were from Chile.
04:37number 11 his paternal grandparents were from chile
04:48only his second start in the tournament for subiabre
04:52replacing the in-form mar carrizo
04:58we've got three goals in the knockout phase
05:02they picked up a second yellow card in that quarter final win over mexico
05:06quarter-final that certainly wasn't short of cards
05:11who were 14 in total including two reds for mexico
05:24all cards
05:28have been expunged after the quarter-final stage so nobody
05:32starting tonight is in danger of picking up a yellow and missing the final
05:36we all start with a clean slate and free kick there against gorosito
05:43here's garcia
05:56long ball which argentina should deal with and do so comfortably
06:02despite the best efforts of joel chinchibo to keep that ball alive for colombia
06:08these two sides know each other pretty well they met twice in qualifying
06:15there were two stages of qualification
06:28there were two stages of qualification in the comma ball region
06:45that's a free kick that goes to argentina
07:02there's a fair
07:08and there's a fair
07:20and there's a fair
07:22Watching on, thinking of what might have been if he hadn't picked up his second yellow card in the quarter-final.
07:33Some key players missing for both sides.
07:38Defender Carlos Sarabia also suspended for Colombia.
07:42They've got two players out.
07:45There's injuries and suspensions.
07:47And, as I mentioned earlier, have a possible maximum of 21 players available for this semi-final, both Argentina and Colombia.
07:59Two coaches having to do with 18 each.
08:01Just for the record, by the way, in qualifying, I mentioned they met twice in the initial stage and the final stage.
08:21These two on the way to this World Cup.
08:24First match finished 1-1.
08:27And in the final stage, Argentina won 1-0.
08:30Everything suggests this semi-final will be tight.
08:37As tight as the first semi-final?
08:39Well, we'll see.
08:41That went all the way through extra time into penalties between Morocco and France.
08:46And if you missed the news that I told you earlier, Morocco won the shootout 5-4.
08:51Here's Perea for Colombia.
08:53Big chance for Cancimbo.
08:55Cancimbo blocked by Barbi.
08:58But he had a real chance there.
09:06Joel Cancimbo is great work by Perea.
09:11Stands the cross-up.
09:14Pretty comfortable save.
09:15And then Cancimbo's foul.
09:17Something of a let-off here for Argentina.
09:27Deliberately powered the header down low.
09:31Trying to make it awkward for the goalkeeper, but couldn't get it wide enough.
09:35Colombia's number 20.
09:37Best chance of this semi-final.
09:39South American nations have dominated the FIFA under-20 World Cup down the years.
10:07Argentina with a record six titles.
10:11Brazil five.
10:15Uruguay.
10:18Won it two years ago.
10:20Tournament stays in Argentina.
10:25South American nations have won it 12 times.
10:28Europe ten.
10:29And as I mentioned, Africa with that lone success for Ghana.
10:3416 years ago.
10:36Sloppy play from Argentina.
10:38And Perea couldn't get it out of his feet.
10:41Couldn't get it under his spell.
10:42And he had a great position there, Oscar Perea.
10:45Don't see that often at the back from Argentina.
10:54Sloppy, but not punished.
10:56Bazan will take the throw.
11:14Pays for Deportivo Pereira.
11:16Chancimbo just feeling the challenge from the Argentina captain, Juan Soler.
11:34Played in last year's Olympics under Javier Mascherano for Argentina.
11:38Soler.
11:39Played in last year's Olympics under Javier Mascherano for Argentina.
12:09Played in last year's Olympics under Javier Mascherano for Argentina.
12:11Played in last year's Olympics under Javier Mascherano for Argentina.
12:16Perea looking at a number of yellow shirts who are looking to apply the pressure.
12:39Played in last year's Olympics under Javier Mascherano for Argentina.
12:41Routine stop in the end for Barbi.
12:42Played in last year's Olympics under Javier Mascherano for Argentina.
12:44Played in last year's Olympics under Javier Mascherano for Argentina.
12:46Played in last year's Olympics under Javier Mascherano for Argentina.
12:53Good job!
12:55Toro Cito unable to keep the ball in on that far side.
13:03Just two more matches to play in the competition.
13:14The third place playoff match will be here at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Perranos on Saturday.
13:28And that will be between France and the losers of this second semifinal.
13:32And that will be followed on Sunday by the showpiece event when Morocco in their first ever under-20 World Cup final will meet the winners of Argentina against Colombia.
13:50What a story Moroccan international football is at the moment at all levels.
13:56It's good work there.
14:01It's in quite a lot of the action in the first few minutes, Chincimbo.
14:09Prestiani, good ball carry.
14:18No room for the cross.
14:21Not sure Bazan needed to make contact there with Prestiani.
14:26It's a gift of a free kick here for Argentina.
14:30He'd done all the hard work in stopping the potential cross Bazan and he just couldn't resist putting hands on Prestiani.
14:38As soon as the Argentina winger felt the contact he was going to go over and win the free kick.
14:47He might be left to regret that Bazan.
14:50The referee with eyes on things in there, he's going to delay the corner.
15:09Words with Ramirez and Bazan.
15:12Having a little dance those two at the moment.
15:16Prestiani waits.
15:19Still the referee isn't happy.
15:31Tomas Perez and Yemar Mosquera.
15:41The latest pair to be spoken to.
15:43Finally in by Prestiani.
15:49Shallow, comfortable defending for Colombia.
15:52The referee just delaying to see if it might have been a challenge under the video support system which is in use at this World Cup.
16:15If you've not been with us in the tournament, this is your first viewing of the event.
16:20Then a particularly warm welcome to you.
16:22If you've been here before, you'll know, I suspect, how the video support system works.
16:31Bring you up to speed on it in a moment because here come Argentina.
16:35Plenty forward in this attack.
16:37The header back is a dangerous one.
16:40Half-hearted appeals for handball but nothing more than that, I don't think, from Argentina.
16:46I don't think Diego Placente will be reviewing that.
16:54And that's a foul by Chen Chimbo.
16:56The video support system serves the same purpose as VAR essentially where it can only be used for clear and obvious errors in relation to decisions on goals, penalties, direct red cards or mistaken identity.
17:10It's a cost-effective operation for competitions with limited human and financial resources.
17:17It is being used currently in the third tier in both Spain and Italy in the men's game.
17:24Full-time use there.
17:26Top tier in the women's game in Spain is using it.
17:29Top tier in women's football in Italy, I understand, will be next.
17:33And trials underway in Brazil in both the men's and women's game.
17:38Both coaches can get two reviews or challenges in a 90 minutes for the situations I've just laid out for you.
17:51And they do that by holding up a card on the touchline, chucking the attention of the fourth official.
17:57There is no designated VAR official.
18:00And then the referee, the on-pitch referee's attention will be drawn to that.
18:04And you'll come over to the screen, the review area if you like, and assess the review.
18:11If a coach is successful with the review, then they keep the total at the time.
18:16Unsuccessful, you lose that review.
18:22Hope that's clear for you.
18:27Certainly it's been in use a lot.
18:30And it's worked really well at this World Cup.
18:34Useful ball.
18:36Kenna Gonzalez showing interest in it.
18:39And it nearly rebounded off the captain and into an empty net because the goalkeeper had to commit here.
18:47Santino Barbi.
18:49And happy to see that the ricochet off Kenna Gonzalez sent it harmlessly behind.
18:54Anxious look over his shoulder, though, from Barbi, the goalkeeper.
19:03Well, this game was never going to be dull.
19:06It's been lively in the first 18 minutes.
19:08The game's best chance fell for Colombia.
19:12And then Joel Cencimbo with a close-range header where he didn't overwork the goalkeeper.
19:19Santino Barbi.
19:21Delgado.
19:22Now Soler.
19:24Good offer here from the left-back Soler.
19:26He's trying to buy the challenge there from Bazan, who just resisted any temptation he might have had to make the challenge.
19:30Good job he pulled out of that because Soler was waiting for it.
19:31It's a really good offer from the left-back.
19:32Just watch.
19:33He's waiting to see if Bazan is going to career into him.
19:34Oh, there!
19:35Good work.
19:37Good offer here from the left-back Soler.
19:40He's trying to buy the challenge there from Bazan, who just resisted any temptation that he might have had to make the challenge.
19:47Good job he pulled out of that because Soler was waiting for it.
19:50He's waiting for it.
19:51It's a really good offer from the left-back.
19:54Just watch.
19:55He's waiting to see if Bazan is going to career into him.
19:58to him
20:10good throw poor marking subiabre shot routine stop for garcia
20:18colombia did not defend that throwing it's very well at all
20:23not punished though by subiabre
20:28colombia's 12th appearance at a fifa under 20 world cup their best record third in 2003
20:49so this is as far as they've ever been before and that year
20:53they beat argentina for the bronze medal in that third place playoff
21:04but this is all about the right to meet morocco in sunday's final here in santiago
21:10after the runners-up in afcon qualifying eliminated france
21:16and a dramatic penalty shootout in valparaiso morocco edging it 5-4
21:25no harm
21:29for jordan garcia so there's cross
21:34captain of argentina juan so there's actually balling paraguay has paraguayan parents
21:40he's attached to english premier league club bournemouth where he has played some senior football
21:45and delgado
22:02this is nice from argentina prestiani can't keep the shot down
22:06nothing wrong with the approach play from Placente's side. Torres a little concerned
22:15at the spaces Argentina had there for a moment.
22:19Presciani has looked really good since he came into the Argentina line-up.
22:43It's been mainly a substitute, although he did start the quarter-final win
22:48over Mexico.
22:57Delgado, taken out, who started every game at this World Cup, the Boca Juniors midfielder.
23:10Boca Juniors players at this World Cup have been mourning the loss
23:14of their head coach, Miguel Angel Russo, who died recently.
23:20Midway point of the first half at the FIFA under-20 World Cup. It's been an absolute joy to be covering the matches.
23:29I really hope you have been enjoying the journey with me.
23:39Garcia to Bazan, cut out easily by Soler.
23:45Garcia to Bazan, cut out easily by Soler.
23:59Care to Bazan, cut out easily by Soler.
24:13Perea, closed down quickly by Gorocito.
24:17Revisit for와ín Pazan, at a bit of a glass of water.
24:29Bazan, oi zinha.
24:40Mod osal f okay.
24:42Well, no early goal in this second semi-final, but FIFA's technical study group have noted that the early goals are way up in this year's competition on the tournament two years ago in Argentina,
25:06where there were 7.8% goals scored in the first 15 minutes of matches, that more than doubled here, to 16.2%, serves to underline that teams have come out, by and large, on the front foot, looking to attack, looking to be expansive.
25:28Good tussle here involving Ramirez and Perea, but there were hands-on Oscar Perea there from Tobias Ramirez.
25:41And that will bring forward Simon Garcia.
25:50Julian Bazan, in there too.
25:58Free kick in by Perea.
26:11Back out with Oscar Perea, possibilities here for Colombia.
26:18Good defending in numbers by Argentina.
26:27Now, Chincimbo.
26:29Excellent defending again.
26:31Gorocito on that occasion.
26:33And Argentina can get out on the quick counter-attack.
26:36It can be lethal in these positions.
26:39It's a good steal by Joe Romero for Colombia.
26:48Kenna Gonzalez unable to keep the ball in.
26:50It will be a throw to Argentina.
26:52They wanted more from that counter-attack.
26:55Great work from Joe Romero, tracking back for Colombia.
27:00Great noise in Santiago.
27:10Terrific backing for both teams.
27:13Another loop kindly through to Garcia.
27:32Another loop kindly through to Garcia.
27:38Both of these teams have been very good defensively on the way to this semi-final.
27:57Argentina have conceded only twice.
28:00Colombia three times.
28:03Although Argentina have been...
28:06much more ruthless in front of goal.
28:11They've scored 14 to Colombia's eight.
28:14To get to this stage.
28:17Five of those eight Colombia goals are not on the pitch.
28:22In the absence of suspension of the tournament's joint top scorer Nesa Villareal.
28:29Fresh in the memory, his brilliant hat-trick in a quite sensational match in the quarter-final against Spain.
28:353-2 Colombia won that.
28:37Spain with 2-1 up at one stage.
28:40Parts of the world 2-3 players.
28:47Not the actual match.
28:57The T organic match.
29:01Such примерно.
29:03But one's the best of them.
29:04here. Now Bazel.
29:20I mentioned Argentina have won this FIFA Under 20 World Cup a record six times. They've been in
29:26eight finals in total. And if they get to Sunday's showpiece they will draw level with Brazil.
29:34With their ninth Under 20 World Cup final. Here's Sarko. It's been quiet so far. Four goals. Argentina's
29:47leading goalscorer to this stage, Alejo Sarko. Chanchimbo is quick. Can't get past Ramirez.
30:04Now Perea.
30:11And he's done well to prevent the corner. Just got caught Corosito on the wrong side of
30:21Perea there. He made up the ground well enough. It's just a throw.
30:34Almost half an hour gone. Defenses largely on top.
30:38That had been one or two openings. But particularly that early header for Colombia's Joel Chanchimbo.
30:47And he really didn't exercise Santino Barbi in the Argentina goal. And he should have done.
30:56Pretty easy. Parry away for the goalkeeper.
31:00That team header straight at him. No more than a couple of meters out from the Argentina goal line.
31:09Here's Bazin.
31:10Here's Bazin.
31:11Here's Bazin.
31:17One point.
31:18Prestiani suggesting to the Portuguese referee, João Pinheiro, that he got the ball.
31:40The man with the whistle disagreed. There's no card here for Prestiani but it will be a free kick to Colombia.
31:53Alois' reactions were bordering on descent which the referee might easily have reached for a yellow card.
32:06Frustration for Prestiani.
32:24Very even in terms of the possession.
32:28Colombia edging it in terms of attempts. Five to Argentina's four.
32:35González to Centimbo.
32:43Somehow he's wriggled three or four blue and white shirts around him there.
32:51He defended pretty well in the end Argentina but he's a handful isn't he?
32:57Joel Cancimbo plays for the junior club in Barranquilla.
33:02Argentina have looked at his quality already in this first half.
33:09Forward by Adizala.
33:28This year's under 20 World Cup almost mirroring the senior World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
33:43in that three of the semi-finalists were the same as they were in the Middle East.
34:02Argentina and of course famously went on to win it. France and Morocco.
34:17But what a story for Morocco. Their under 20s.
34:24Saying to the big heads in the senior squad.
34:29We can do what you did.
34:33They got to a semi-final of a World Cup.
34:36They've gone that one stage further.
34:39The Atlas Cubs here in Chile because they beat France in a dramatic first semi-final in Valparaiso.
34:50That match finishing just a little over 35 minutes ago.
34:57Penalty shootout Morocco 5-4 on spot kicks after it finished 1-1 after extra time.
35:02So France will be here on Saturday to play the losers of this second semi-final for the bronze medal.
35:08Morocco lying in wait for the winners.
35:11Morocco lying in wait for the winners.
35:20It's been heavy investment in Morocco.
35:22The King has been putting a lot of money into the facilities and it's paying off big time.
35:31And they're not just being successful.
35:33They're being entertaining with it.
35:35The seniors, the under 20s.
35:37Play football the right way.
35:38It's been a joy to watch them.
35:40Chen Chimbo in need of attention here.
35:47And yes he in need of attention here for the winners.
35:49It's been a mal-final of a chi-final of a chi-final of a chi-final of a chi.
35:50They're being the most self-inflicted.
35:52The Magnus Wiglashvili.
35:53The goal is to be looking for five years, at the peak, a chi-final of a chi-final of a chi-final of a chi-final.
35:54Self-inflicted really as he went into the challenge and sign already that Joel Chen Chimbo
36:11is not going to recover from this. Well, you feel for him, don't you?
36:17He'll be wondering if he's going to play a part in the final if Colombia get there, certainly
36:28another game to be played, win or lose here. That's it for Chen Chimbo in this semi-final.
36:34I've been mentioning he'd been the go-to player for most of the Colombia attacks, Argentina
36:41will not be unhappy to see him leave. John Renteria will come on to replace him.
36:57He's in Argentina with Samiento Renteria. Takes the place on the right side of that Colombia
37:07attack wearing number 11.
37:09He's in Argentina with Camino Renteria.
37:16Delgado.
37:23Villalba.
37:32Villalba, Cristiani, Sarko, Subiabre, Sarko, oh the goalkeeper couldn't be sure where that was heading, cleared by Bazan.
37:53Argentina neatly got in behind the Colombia defence there, Sarko and Subiabre heavily involved, that's a foul by Gonzales.
38:07The referee perfectly positioned to see that lovely little slide rule pass from Subiabre there, the goalkeeper nearly palmed it out to a blue white shirt.
38:24It was Valentino Acuna who was waiting for any mistake from the goalkeeper, just eluded him.
38:32Good set piece position here now for Argentina.
38:50In by Prestiani, what a waste.
39:02Well he's better than that, he knows it, hand of apology.
39:07There's his club football in Portugal with Benfica, he's been there for close to two years now, Gianluca Cristiani.
39:24Well you really do feel, don't you, for Ciancimpo.
39:28Pinnacle, one of their young careers to play in a FIFA under 20 World Cup.
39:41For the vast majority, you only get to play in one.
39:44You graduate to the senior team, you can play in several senior World Cups, but at this level, generally it's just the one, there are exceptions.
39:51As Colombia look to press the Argentine defence here.
40:00Too long for Renteria, who looked like he was mis-reading the situation there.
40:07Hands all over the opponent, Renteria, and it will be a free kick to Soler and Argentina.
40:13.
40:23.
40:32.
40:36.
40:38.
40:40.
40:42.
40:59Both these teams have been picking up praise from FIFA's technical study group, former France head coach and ex-French captain Corinne Diac.
41:10.
41:11.
41:12.
41:13.
41:14.
41:15.
41:16.
41:17.
41:18.
41:19.
41:20.
41:21.
41:22.
41:23.
41:24.
41:35.
41:37.
41:38.
41:39.
41:40.
41:41.
41:42.
41:43.
41:44.
41:45.
42:03.
42:04.
42:06.
42:07.
42:08level of game awareness and intelligence where they often lure the opposition into predefined
42:18areas he added and inject pace and speed to quickly change the point of attack so
42:23tactically these two teams are switched on very well coached
42:29and it's a fascinating semi-final we expected it to be tight first 42 minutes
42:35and we're not about to change our mind here come colombia tiptoeing their way through nicely shot
42:41on goal just wide and not far wide of barbie's right hand post
42:50from juan arizala of independiente in medellin the left back wearing number 17 got forward with menis there
43:06just curled away at the last goalkeeper showed plenty of interest in it injured himself
43:11slightly as he fell in producing the shot arizala
43:19concern again for the head coach of colombia cesar torres hoping he's not going to lose another player
43:25here but back on his feet which is a happier sign for arizala but for chanchimbo there was no consolation
43:34well we can't split them all attempts now argentina have edged a little further clear in terms of
43:55possession
44:02we have the provision for 30 minutes extra time penalties if needed first semi-final
44:09earlier today in val palaiso went all the way to penalties one one after extra time between
44:15morocco and france and it was the african qualified
44:23no way forward for substitute renteria
