00:00With so many great characters to explore, so much lore to unravel, and so many weird variations of droids to catalogue,
00:08there simply isn't room for everything to take centre stage in Star Wars.
00:12And so, while you can't have missed the destruction of the Death Stars, or Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader,
00:18you might not have noticed these incredibly subtle moments that actually turned out to be very, very, very important.
00:24Also, just so you know, this list will only be focusing on theatrically released Star Wars films,
00:31although they may tie into the TV output on occasion.
00:34So, with that in mind, I'm Gareth from WhatCultureStarWars, and here are 10 huge Star Wars moments that happened in the background.
00:41Number 10, C-3PO Gagged Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi
00:45In Return of the Jedi, there's a very famous scene where a disguised Princess Leia revives Han Solo from Carbonite,
00:53and delivers the whole someone-who-loves-your-line.
00:56It's a nice bit of cinema, but there's just one thing wrong with it.
01:00After the two romantic rebels reunite, the all-too-familiar laugh of Jabba the Hutt rings out.
01:05It turns out that he and his cronies have been watching the whole thing, including C-3PO, which is all very creepy.
01:123PO had been given to Jabba as a gift by Luke Skywalker,
01:16which was all part of the Jedi's plan to infiltrate the Crime Lord's palace.
01:19However, could he not have warned Han and Leia that they were being spied on?
01:23That seems like something he would probably do, right?
01:26Well, if you look closely at when Jabba and co. come out of hiding, again, very creepy,
01:30you'll see exactly why the protocol droid was silent.
01:34One of the Hutt's posse is holding their hand over 3PO's mouth, stopping him from giving the game away.
01:40This could mean that our gold-plated friend did try and warn his comrades,
01:44but was cut off before he could do so.
01:46Either way, it's just nice to know that 3PO isn't that much of a coward.
01:509. The Tracking Droid – Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace
01:54When fleeing Naboo in The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Queen Amidala, and the rest of their gang
02:00all end up on the desert planet of Tatooine.
02:03Here, they come across a young boy named Anakin,
02:06who just so happens to be the prophesied child who will one day bring balance to the Force.
02:11What are their chances, eh?
02:12They're not the only interlopers on Little Annie's homeworld, though.
02:16The good guys are being hunted down by about one-third of Darth Maul's entire screen time.
02:20The horned Sith lands on the barren world and dispatches a group of tracking droids to find his prey.
02:27The audience is left to assume that they were successful, as they never actually see the robots at work.
02:32Or do they?
02:33After Anakin wins his freedom in a pod race, Qui-Gon is seen talking to his former owner, Watto.
02:39And in the background of this shot, you can very much see one of Maul's droids.
02:43This is a neat little detail that really didn't have to be included in the scene.
02:48But it does a great job of tying the Tatooine portion of the film together.
02:52Now, what is your favorite prequel moment?
02:54Is it that aforementioned pod race fun?
02:57Or something else?
02:58Let me know in the comments section below.
03:00Number 8, IG-88 gets scrapped.
03:03Star Wars Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back.
03:06One of the many things that the main canon Star Wars movies offered just a slight glimpse at,
03:11was the shady world of bounty hunting.
03:13Outside of the FET, the lives of the galaxy's lone ragers weren't really picked up on.
03:18It would fall to the expanded universe to tell those tales.
03:22As for the films, the most bounty hunters seen in one place are the group assembled by Darth Vader
03:27aboard his Super Star Destroyer in The Empire Strikes Back.
03:30Boba Fett is there, as his fan favorite, Bossk.
03:33And a tall, slender robot is also standing next to the fabled Mandalorian.
03:38This is IG-88.
03:40One of many murderous IG units created with the sole purpose of killing.
03:45This one actually meets a rather sticky end, however.
03:48As its broken body can be seen in the junkyards of Cloud City later in the movie.
03:52Yep, that's the broken bot right there.
03:55Number 7, Kanan Jarrus' Voice.
03:57Star Wars Episode 9, The Rise of Skywalker.
03:59Episode 7-9 not only gave Disney a chance to rake in that sweet, sweet Star Wars dollar,
04:05but it also offered the opportunity to sneak in references to all the stuff that had come out
04:10since the House of Mouse took control of Lucasfilm in 2012.
04:14This included Star Wars Rebels,
04:16an animated show set between the fall of the Republic and the events of A New Hope.
04:21Rebels not only provided fans with more context as to what went down before the original films,
04:26but it also introduced plenty of new characters for people to fawn over.
04:30One of them was Kanan Jarrus, who was portrayed by Freddie Prinze Jr.
04:34A Padawan who survived Order 66,
04:37Jarrus eventually learns to embrace his force-sensitive ways after years of repressing them.
04:42He becomes one of the heroes of the Rebels' story,
04:45before sacrificing himself to save his friends.
04:47I'm still not over it.
04:49But Jarrus actually turns up in the sequel trilogy,
04:52although not in the way you'd think.
04:54During Rey's final battle with Palpatine in Rise of Skywalker,
04:58Jarrus is one of the many Jedi voices who encourages her during this climactic fight.
05:03Number 6, Red 5 Down, Rogue One, A Star Wars Story.
05:07Rogue One, A Star Wars Story, did a fantastic job explaining
05:10how the Rebel Alliance got their hands on the original Death Star plans.
05:14In Gareth Edwards' excellent one-off movie,
05:17fans got to know a little bit more about the various squadrons of fighter pilots
05:21that would later serve in the Rebellion's fiercest space battles.
05:24One of them is Red Squadron,
05:26which would play a key role in the assault on both Death Stars.
05:30In Rogue One, they get involved in the film's climactic battle on the planet Scarif.
05:34During the skirmish, one of the members of the squad is blown up and killed, though.
05:38This unlucky fella's call sign was Red 5,
05:41which should sound familiar to any self-respecting Star Wars fan.
05:45Red 5 is the position that none other than Luke Skywalker himself
05:48would take up when he joined the Alliance fleet.
05:51This character's death in Rogue One opened the door for Skywalker to join,
05:55which in turn may have saved the entire galaxy.
05:59Number 5, The Debut of Aura Sing, Star Wars Episode I, The Phantom Menace.
06:03You can't take anything for granted in Star Wars,
06:06because even the most minor of characters might one day end up playing a huge role in the saga.
06:12One actual example of this happens during the Boonta Eve classic pod race in Star Wars Episode I,
06:17The Phantom Menace.
06:18As Anakin, Suburba, and all the rest of your favourites whiz through the canyons,
06:23a female-looking figure with pale white skin and dark red hair
06:26can be seen watching them from above.
06:29This is the very first time Star Wars fans are introduced to Aura Sing.
06:32Sing is a very powerful bounty hunter with some elements of force sensitivity.
06:37She's also one of the folks who trains Boba Fett in the ways of combat,
06:41eventually joining him on a failed mission to assassinate Mace Windu.
06:45You know, after he decapitated his daddy.
06:48Sing turns up all over the place in the Star Wars mythos,
06:50even getting a mention in Solo.
06:52And this blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo was the catalyst for all of it.
06:56Number 4, Black Saber, Rogue One, A Star Wars Story
06:59Back to Rogue One now and its tense finale on Scarif.
07:04Jyn Erso and her crew have discovered that this is where the plans for the Death Star are being kept.
07:09They go off on a mission to retrieve the data,
07:11which goes really well for them and definitely doesn't end with everyone getting killed.
07:16Obviously, there's more than just one set of plans on Scarif.
07:19There's a whole building there full of the Empire's deepest and darkest secrets.
07:23While scanning the archives, Erso reads out a bunch of different file names,
07:27and one of them is Black Saber,
07:29which isn't the only time this concept has been mentioned in Star Wars.
07:33Black Saber is surely referring to the Dark Saber,
07:36a powerful ancient lightsaber that was first introduced in the Clone Wars animated show.
07:42It is most prominently featured in The Mandalorian,
07:44serving as one of the main MacGuffins of the second season.
07:47This line from Rogue One proves that the Empire had knowledge of the Saber very early on,
07:52which would explain how it eventually fell into the hands of Moff Gideon.
07:55Number 3, The Spielberg-Lucas Shared Universe
07:59In The Phantom Menace during one of the many scintillating Galactic Senate scenes,
08:04Queen Amidala calls for a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum.
08:08This moment sets in motion the chain of events that leads to Palpatine becoming Chancellor.
08:12Then it's the emergency powers, Order 66,
08:15the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise, etc, etc.
08:19But as the various alien representatives react to Amidala's words,
08:23you can spot a group of extraterrestrials that look very much like, well,
08:28THE extraterrestrial.
08:29Combine this with a scene from that Spielberg movie where the main character
08:33seems to recognize a kid dressed up as Yoda,
08:36and it's conspiracy theory time, baby.
08:38This little detail surely proves that E.T. and Star Wars take place within the same shared universe.
08:44Or maybe this was just George Lucas and Steven Spielberg who are good friends in real life,
08:49making little cute references to each other's work.
08:51But where's the fun in that, eh?
08:53Number 2, Admiral Ackbar's Death
08:55Star Wars Episode 8, The Last Jedi
08:57When The Force Awakens hit cinemas like a freight train in December 2015,
09:03Star Wars fans were delighted to see several obscure characters from the original trilogy
09:07make their triumphant return.
09:09One of them was everyone's favorite trap-warning Mon Calamari, Admiral Ackbar.
09:14Ackbar most famously appeared in Return of the Jedi, of course,
09:17leading the charge against the second Death Star.
09:20In Force Awakens, he was shown to have joined General Leia's resistance,
09:24proving once again to be a valuable asset.
09:26And then he just died.
09:28At the very start of the next movie, The Last Jedi,
09:31Ackbar is one of the characters killed when TIE fighters attack Leia's cruiser.
09:35There's no fanfare, no last words, nothing.
09:38That's simply the end of the good Admiral.
09:41Ackbar's throwaway death got a lot of people very upset.
09:44And understandably, should Ackbar's death have been given more time?
09:48Who's to say, but at least his legacy will never die thanks to three little words.
09:53And number 1, The Ice Cream Maker
09:55Star Wars Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back
09:58For those in the know, there are few Star Wars characters funnier than Wilro Hood.
10:03Hood appears very, very briefly in The Empire Strikes Back
10:06as a citizen of the floating city above Bespin.
10:09As Lando Calrissian and Leia are running through the city corridors as it is evacuated,
10:14this guy in an orange jumpsuit passes in front of them.
10:18And what is he carrying under his left arm?
10:20An ice cream maker, of course.
10:22It was surely never intended this way,
10:24but Hood developed a massive cult following
10:26thanks to his frantic efforts to rescue his favourite frozen treat.
10:30What a guy, eh?
10:31But as with everything in Star Wars,
10:33there's actually more to this guy than meets the eye.
10:36Thanks to the expanded universe,
10:38aka the legends part of this galaxy far, far away,
10:41it was eventually revealed that Hood was a gas miner
10:44working for a rebellion sympathetic company on Cloud City.
10:47The ice cream maker was actually a hard drive
10:50full of data on the corporation's clients.
10:52Hood was destroying it so it wouldn't fall into the wrong hands.
10:56So after all this time and mockery,
10:58it turns out that our boy was actually a massive hero all along.
11:02And that's our list.
