00:00My view was that part of the role of the presidency

00:07is to constantly remind us of the ties

00:12that bind us together.

00:15And we live in a big, complicated, raucous,

00:22diverse nation.

00:24I've said before, I believe,

00:30it is what makes us exceptional.

00:35There's never been an experiment like this,

00:40where you have people from every corner of the globe

00:45show up in one place and say,

00:50based on these ideals, we hold these truths to be self-evident.

00:56All men are created equal.

00:59That based on that and a constitution

01:03and a bill of rights and a democracy

01:08that we can somehow figure out how to get along

01:11and maintain our private beliefs

01:20and pray to God in our own ways

01:26and retain aspects of the cultures that we bring

01:31from wherever it is that we're coming from

01:34and yet still decide that we are all Americans

01:41who can salute that flag

01:44and believe in a certain creed

01:47and defend this country

01:50and try to make it better for each successive generation.

01:57And I'm not alone in that belief.

02:01As I said, I think George W. Bush believed that.

02:06I believe that people who I ran against,

02:12I know John McCain believed it.

02:15I know Mitt Romney believed it.

02:18So what I'm describing is not a Democratic value

02:25or a Republican value.

02:27It is an American value.
