Relive the vintage magic of Pravin Amre’s stunning innings of 78 runs against England in the 2nd Test at Chennai, February 1993. Spending nearly 200 minutes at the crease, Amre’s composed knock included 8 crisp boundaries and a six — a perfect blend of patience and timing. His classy strokes against spinners Ian Salisbury and Phil Tufnell highlighted his fine technique and confidence.

India went on to win by an innings and 22 runs, and Amre’s innings played a key role in that dominant victory. Despite such talent, his international journey was short-lived — only 11 Tests and 37 ODIs between 1992 and 1994.

00:00In this vintage cricket gem, we revisit Praveen Amre's remarkable half-century
00:05during the second test against England at Chennai in February 1993.
00:10It was a knock full of class and grit. Praveen Amre crafted a fluent 78 runs of 154 balls,
00:18spanning nearly 200 minutes at the crease. His inning was laced with eight elegant boundaries
00:23and a cleanly struck six. What stood out was the comboier and control he displayed
00:29against England spinners Ian Salisbury and Phil Tufnel, playing some delightful strokes
00:35that reflected his fine technique and temperament. So Cricket fans, what do you think?
00:40Did Praveen Amre deserve the longer run in the Indian side? How would you rate his brave
00:45innings against England? Share your thoughts in the comments and relive this timeless piece of
00:51Indian cricketing history?
00:53The field, not quite sure what reason for whether he took a knock when he dropped that catch off
01:00Praveen Amre, whether his hands have suffered a blow, whether he's been the victim or is about
01:06to be the victim of more of England's misfortune. Ian Salisbury, it will be to continue from the
01:14pavilion end and bowling to Praveen Amre.
01:30Well down the wicket, he's found the gap. No need to chase that. Amre's away, four runs through extra cover.
01:38And that's as fine a shot as you could hope to see. There's perfect footwork there. It's gone down
01:46the wicket. The foot is close to the ball and the bat comes down, angling it slightly to ensure that he
01:52finds the gap because the offside is packed. It's a very good shot. Good singles.
02:08Well Tartnell looking with concern around his field and here he is to Amre. It's a no ball and that's a splendid stroke.
02:26Right back over the top and it's gone away for four. No it's gone away for six, the first six of the morning
02:33and listen to the noise. The crowd loving it and those six signs are getting an outing.
02:41So general jubilation.
02:45Well either Amre heard the call very quickly or he was determined to hit this over the top, whatever Tufnel Bowl.
02:52And Charles Caulfield's having an early lunch. He's Jimmy Edwards, wasn't he, who sang,
03:04I've never seen a straight banana. And Charlie eating not a bent banana but one with a nice healthy bend in it.
03:11A little bit of talking going on. The wicketkeeper encouraging the bowler but that is the end of
03:25play for the morning. 372 for four and during the two hours we've had today 97 runs have been scored,
03:34two wickets have fallen and England is having hiccups. Well, well said. I think India's having a bit of hiccups against him.
03:43He's got six hiccuping wickets, hasn't he, in this series so far.
03:50And if you bow short and give these Indians any room at all, it's four runs this time from Amre's back.
03:57Yes, Graham Hick just giving him room outside of Stump and a bit of shortness in length.
04:12Here's Tufnel to Amre. Tufnel's last over to Amre was intriguing stuff. See whether he can get back into the...
04:20Oh, magnificent stop.
04:21Terrific effort by Dermot Reeve. Substitute fielder throwing himself around. Great effort.
04:34And that's certainly not going to make it easy for Praveen Amre who's been bogged down by Tufnel in the previous over.
04:41There's been another bowling change. Alex Stewart still manipulating his bowlers, changing things around,
04:48trying to offer the batsmen different options as best he can, and it's going to be Ian Salisbury.
04:54He's going to bowl from the combat end, combat stand end, and bowling to Praveen Amre.
05:02And runs, pulled away through mid-wicket.
05:06No real need to run for those. Just a little bit short, the open delivery of his spell.
05:11And that's broken the shackles of the Indian batsmen.
05:14Yes, and that's just what England don't want. What a pressure created by Philip Tufnel and some of the other bowlers.
05:21And then on comes a new bowler, halfway down the pitch. It's quite a simple shot on this very classy pitch.
05:28All sorts of hassles here, all sorts of problems, the lorries, the odd sacred cow, always alert, accidents avert.
05:37All good safe advice.
05:41Drive rash, you crash. Well, there's been no rash driving out in the middle in the last hour or so.
05:45And very little crashing too.
05:53That's a good shot. Beautifully played again and finds the gap perfectly.
06:00First Tendall car, now Amre on the attack.
06:03Yes, it was the right sort of ball for me in Salisbury. He drew the batsmen forward.
06:10Looped it up in the air, but it was a terrific shot. Good use of the feet.
06:14That's going to be a chase again. Robin Smith, the man out at deep cover, gets a good foot on it.
06:36And saves one. Four turned into three. Salisbury just dropping a little bit short this time.
06:47This is good aggressive bashing. It's giving problems to Salisbury.
06:50You're not quite sure now what sort of length to try and select.
06:54Yes, this is difficult for the fielders right on the boundary edge because the grass doesn't grow very well.
07:00The last 10 or 15 yards, it bobbles along.
07:06And that's too short again. It's going away for four. And that was a bad ball.
07:20Well, he bowed well before T, but after T, he's rather fallen from grace, Ian Salisbury.
07:25And he also has got 100 up against his name. One for 101.
07:30Well, that's a bit of rubbish, isn't it, to be honest. I mean, you can't set fields.
07:33Alex Stewart in his first match as captain. Just cannot set fields for that.
07:38Even old professional cricketers in the leagues will tell you, pitch the ball up, pitch the ball up.
07:42They'll keep telling youngsters. And it's the same in test cricket as it is in league cricket.
07:48And it's in the air. He could be caught down there at long off. Oh, yes, he's been caught.
08:04So, Salisbury has got another wicket. A good wicket. India is still 499. And Jarvis took a good catch, a trifle anxiously.
08:17Yes, good wicket by Ian Salisbury as well, by pitching the ball up, enticing both batsmen to come forward and drive.
08:24India went on to dominate the contest, sealing victory by an inning and 22 runs, a statement win at home.
08:38Praveen Amri's contribution was crucial in setting up that commanding position. Yet, despite such promising
08:45performances, his international career remained painfully short-lived. Between 1992 and 1994,
08:52he represented India in only 11 test matches and 37 ODIs before being dropped. A decision many still
09:00find hard to justify. Praveen Amri's story, however, began with a dream debut. Scoring a century in your
09:07first test is every cricketer's fantasy. And doing so on foreign soil is even rare. Praveen Amri achieved
09:15this incredible milestone against South Africa at Durban in 1992-1993. Under tough conditions
09:22against a fierce bowling attack featuring Alan Donald, Brian McMillan and Greg Matthews,
09:28his debut 100 made him the ninth Indian player to achieve such an extraordinary feat. After hanging
09:34up his boots, Praveen Amri turned to coaching, guiding several teams and nurturing young talent.
09:40His sharp cricketing mind and disciplined approach earned him respect in the domestic circuit and among
09:47budding cricketers. If you like this video, please comment, share and subscribe. Thank you very much.
