00:00OK, for your next head rush challenge,
00:05I have a test of strength for you between paper and wood.
00:08Who do you think is going to win?
00:10The answer might surprise you.
00:11I cut two loops of paper, nothing strong,
00:14just two inch wide strips made into rings.
00:17They sit over two sharp knife blades
00:20and just hang down into space.
00:22Next, I suspend a piece of kite wood between the loops.
00:25You already know what I'm going to say, right?
00:27Don't try this at home.
00:29Now what's going to happen when I try
00:31to break the wood with a deadly kendo blow?
00:33Will it snap the paper rings but leave the wood intact,
00:37snap the wood but leave the paper intact,
00:40or break both the paper and the wood simultaneously?
00:43Only one way to find out.
00:48Yep, snap the wood but left the paper rings intact,
00:51sitting on the knife blades.
00:54It's all thanks to Newton's first law of motion.
00:56My kendo strike acted on the inertia
00:58of the center of the stick pushing it down.
01:00But the outer parts of the stick stayed at rest,
01:03along with the paper.
01:05There you go.
01:06Science meets martial arts, and a mystery unfolds.
01:10That's what we call a head rush.
