The Munda Uprising (1899–1900), also known as the Ulgulan (The Great Tumult), was a powerful tribal revolt led by Birsa Munda against the British colonial rule and the zamindari system in Chotanagpur (present-day Jharkhand).
Birsa Munda, a visionary tribal leader, mobilized the Munda community to fight for their land, rights, and faith. His movement sought to restore the traditional “Khuntkatti” system and end British exploitation. Though Birsa Munda was captured and martyred in 1900, his legacy continues to inspire India’s tribal and freedom movements.
