00:08tell us why you wanted to make a movie about incest and rape
00:11Do you know how hard it is to answer that question
00:13as somebody who, because I'm really lucky
00:15I made a movie about someone else
00:17I don't want to generalize and sound like a sort of like
00:19no one listens to us
00:22I couldn't get this movie made for eight years
00:24and I had to leave the United States of America to do it
00:26and I had a warm welcome in France
00:28but I guarantee you when I bring this movie home
00:30people are going to be like
00:30I could barely sell it
00:32like the feedback that we had
00:35from like places that I really thought might like the movie
00:38that love independent film
00:39that actually are sort of like
00:41a tour forward or like support directors and artists
00:44where like we have no idea how to market this movie
00:48we could barely get through it
00:49all men
00:50yeah
00:51because it's gross
00:52it's uncomfortable
00:54they don't want to look at it
00:55and it's funny this is not an entitlement issue
00:57it's like I'm lucky to have gotten near this book
00:59I'm so lucky to be able to make any movie anyone is
01:02it's like such an enormous like privilege
01:04but it was not about me
01:06I was not crying because people weren't going to like my movie
01:10I was like I'm dropping something
01:12that I think was the most important thing I ever picked up
