00:00Previously on Heartland...
00:02I've got a bottle of single malt.
00:04Another time, pal.
00:06He's not scared of horses like Lou.
00:08You had your chance to be a father.
00:10That was the past, Jack.
00:13Those girls are gonna be a part of my future.
00:15Nothing you can do about that.
00:17Lou is trying her hand at pancakes.
00:20It's really welcome to join us.
00:22All right. Thank you. That sounds lovely.
00:25Maybe you can come out to the ranch, though.
00:27I'll see you Saturday.
00:30So you told Jack yet?
00:34Lou's telling him.
00:36Sweet. How'd you manage that?
00:38Well, it took two days,
00:40and we finally came up with a deal.
00:42Lou's gonna tell Grandpa about Dad coming for lunch,
00:44and I'm gonna give her a crash course
00:46to help her get back into the horse zone.
00:49Lou and horses?
00:51Why? Everybody knows she's scared of them.
00:53Yeah. Everyone except Dad.
00:55You okay?
00:56Yeah.
00:57You sure?
00:58Yeah.
00:59Because the way you threw yourself at me there,
01:00I thought maybe you wanted to talk about something.
01:01I tripped in a gopher hole.
01:02What is there to talk about?
01:03Grandpa?
01:04Uh, there's something I have to tell you.
01:07I'm listening.
01:08Would you put down the butcher knife for a minute, please?
01:11Dad's coming over for lunch.
01:12I'm listening.
01:13Would you put down the butcher knife for a minute, please?
01:17Dad's coming over for lunch.
01:19He's coming here.
01:23He's coming here.
01:24Uh, there's something I have to tell you.
01:28I'm listening.
01:31Would you put down the butcher knife for a minute, please?
01:38Dad's coming over for lunch.
01:45Who's coming here?
01:47Amy invited him.
01:49When's he expected?
01:54Saturday.
01:56Saturday.
02:00Perfect timing.
02:19And at the break of day, you sank into a dream.
02:31A dreamer.
02:34A dreamer.
02:37A dreamer.
02:42A dreamer.
02:44A dreamer.
02:45A dreamer.
02:47A dreamer.
02:50I've got you.
02:53I've got you.
02:54I've got you.
02:55I've got you.
02:56I've got you.
02:57I'm done.
02:58I'm sick of being the cow just because you want to show Amy's depth that she can do more
03:02than muck out stalls.
03:03I don't.
03:04Yes, you do.
03:05Come on Mallory, roping isn't a game.
03:07It's a sport.
03:08Even a science.
03:09Okay, it's all in the way you build your loop here.
03:11See then you got to estimate your distance to the target
03:15You gotta make your throw just right
03:17Okay, now this time. I want you to think like a cow. Okay?
03:21Be the cow Mallory ready. That's it. I'm done. Oh, come on
03:31No
03:33Mallory
03:39Oh, come on. We were having fun
03:41He didn't curse. He didn't rant. His head didn't explode and he didn't say one nasty thing about dad
03:48Must have been having an off day
03:56Tell me again how this is supposed to be helping me well you spend enough time in a horse stall you start to see the world from his point of view
04:04While you're there you might as well be doing something useful
04:07Anyone see my hip waders a little late in the season for fishing isn't it grandpa?
04:12That's the beauty of it. All the fair-weather fishermen are gone, but the fish
04:16still there
04:26And here are your hip waders oh
04:33Gee, did these make me look fat?
04:35Oh, honey, nobody looks good in hip waders
04:38That man you're going with he won't be looking at your waders
04:43All right, I'm going to take it all
04:47This thing doesn't work out. What's your refund policy?
04:51I don't have a refund policy, but for you
04:54No, I'll make an exception. Thank you, Maggie
04:57Now your nephew was in here the other day. Oh with ashley stanton
05:03I hear he's decided to train at briar ridge
05:07hmm
05:09He's a little at loose ends right now
05:11He's doing really well with amy. I'm not particularly happy about his decision. Yeah, either is my soraya
05:18Just sign here. We're all done
05:20I
05:22Better catch something, huh? I think you already did
05:26That looks great lou now to pick out his feet
05:30Oh, come on amy not the feet
05:34Okay, okay, I love the feet
05:36It's my favorite part
05:41Hey, soraya
05:44What you kidding
05:49Okay, I gotta tell Lou. Hey, bye
05:52You are not gonna believe this what
05:55Lisa stillman just bought a bunch of fishing gear at maggie's
06:00hip waders hip waders
06:03Just lean on them
06:08Oh
06:10Yeah
06:17Going fishing grandpa
06:20That's what I said
06:22Yeah, but you you left out the important part
06:25The October caddis won't work this late in the season
06:29No
06:30It's all about timing and you got to match the hatch
06:33No, we're not talking about flies grandpa
06:36I'm taking Lisa to my fishing camp
06:38Yeah
06:43Well, you already know then what's there to talk about
06:47Well, you haven't invited anyone up there since grandma died
06:52By the way I see it I'm growing up enough to manage my own private life anyway I see fit
06:58I don't need any advice I get plenty of that from Mallory
07:01So if you'll excuse me, I've got other fish to fry
07:04Now I remember why I never liked lunging
07:22You're doing fine Lou just he's getting ahead of you
07:24Well, I'm getting dizzy
07:27Don't worry just keep focused on the horse
07:30I can't focus I'm getting dizzy
07:39Amy please
07:40I'll help
07:44You okay?
07:45Yeah, I'm fine
07:46I'm really
07:51I'm gonna puke
07:56Smells delicious
07:57You want a drink?
07:58No thanks
07:59Do you notice anything significant about the table setting?
08:07Uh, they're using their fancy dishes?
08:10It's the quantity not the quality
08:12Three plates, three glasses, three forks, three knives
08:15Do you see a pattern?
08:15No
08:18We've been snubbed
08:19He's their dad, Mallory
08:21It's not like he comes by every day
08:23Getting together like this is a big deal for them
08:25And I think we should let them eat their lunch in peace
08:32Hey, is that Ben's aunt?
08:34Why is she here?
08:36I don't know
08:39Oh my god, Jack's going on a second date with Lisa
08:42He didn't even tell me
08:43Must have been an oversight on his part
08:45You don't understand
08:46Amy's dad's coming back to the ranch
08:48Lou's working with the horses
08:50Jack's practically engaged to Lisa
08:52Everything's changing so fast
08:54I don't even know what to say
08:57You don't?
08:59Wow
09:00The world really has gone crazy
09:07All right
09:09You know where you're going
09:10Do you want to drive the truck?
09:12Truck
09:15You know there are trucks and then
09:19Well there's trucks
09:26Dad's here
09:26Yeah
09:27Just give me one sec
09:29Remember you do the talking?
09:31I can't do all the talking
09:32Well just until I feel like talking
09:34And don't mention the accident
09:36Or the divorce
09:37Or the stuff with grandpa
09:39And Amy whatever you do
09:41You gotta promise me you won't mention anything about my issues with the horses
09:46What issues?
09:47Thanks
09:47I brought along an uninvited guest
10:02His name's Payback
10:03My mom just sends flowers as a hostess gift
10:07Mallory Wells
10:08Neighbor
10:09Horse lover
10:10Friend of the family
10:12Well friend
10:14This isn't exactly a gift
10:15I kind of hoped Amy could do something with him
10:17What do you think Amy?
10:19Well we're kind of full right now
10:20But there's always room for you dad
10:22Well I'm willing to pay whatever you charge
10:25I've already shelled out a few bucks for this guy
10:27He's a three year old cutting horse
10:29Well he seems even tempered
10:30Yeah he's got good eye peel
10:33He's dry works good
10:35That's important working well when they're dry
10:39Or when you're schooling them without a cow
10:41Exactly
10:43Well the thing is
10:45Lou is a cutting horse has to be cow-y
10:48Yeah cow-y right
10:51Cow-y
10:52Mm-hmm cow-y
10:53Yeah they have to know what the cow's gonna do before the cow knows
10:57Right
10:58And this guy kind of blows up whenever he's around a cow
11:01So what dad you bought a cutting horse that won't cut?
11:04Yeah
11:05Won't rub it in
11:08I've never worked with a cutting horse before but I'd love to give it a try
11:11Good
11:13I'll get him set up in the bar
11:19Nice to see you got some help with the horses
11:24Yeah
11:26I'm glad too
11:27So uh I just have to get lunch out of the oven but uh make yourself at home
11:39Here
11:41Thanks Lou
11:42She used to be home
11:58It's all the same
12:03But but different
12:04So how's it going with that black horse?
12:10Good but I'm thinking of entering him in the fall finale
12:14How's the training coming?
12:15Good yeah he uh
12:17He's a little better on his left lead than his right so he tends to drift
12:20Could do without a little help
12:21You uh you using ground poles to keep him straight?
12:24Uh yeah it works really well in training but it's not so good when you're in a show
12:27I was planning on it being just the three of us
12:50Just the family
12:58All right
13:10Lou what can I do?
13:12What can I do?
13:14You seem to be doing just fine
13:18Okay
13:20You can set yourself another place just promise me you won't talk so much okay?
13:24You know the way you do
13:25My lips are sealed
13:28What about tie?
13:32I was thinking we could do um trail rides aimed at a corporate clientele
13:37You know like what you can learn from a horse that'll make you a better executive
13:41It's all about branding really and not the kind that involves hot irons
13:47I get it horses and executives both full of crap
13:52I mean it's it's it's about teamwork you know uh letting go knowing when to lead when to follow
13:58Overcoming fears I mean they do team building exercises rock climbing fire walking
14:04Yeah yeah Lou I think you're onto something
14:07So Amy when are we going to see a jump spartan?
14:09Well I'm going to an arena later today you can come if you want to watch
14:12You don't have to
14:13You guys at least wait until we've had dessert
14:16I'll help you
14:19Me too
14:30So
14:31Mr. Fleming
14:33Tim
14:34Listen you can call me Tim
14:36Okay Tim
14:38I've heard a lot about you
14:40I mean the drugs the accident the rehab and don't even get me started about all that stuff with Jack
14:52Oh
14:55Oh Jack this is heaven
14:58I'm getting a lot of opportunity to bring company up here
15:01Well you couldn't pick a better person because there's just nothing I like more than to do a little fly fish
15:07I can see that all right busted
15:19Okay I see now that maybe they'd have taken us through arena with them if I just kept a little quieter
15:24I just don't know why I got so huffy I mean it's not like it's a big secret
15:29Actually Mallory I'm glad you said what you did
15:30I'm glad you were there if there's a little candy bar
15:32some of my other toys
15:33Yeah
15:34I was thinking you busy this afternoon
15:37You mean me and you?
15:42Does this have anything to do with mo?
15:45This one looks good.
15:50It's good for what?
15:52Watch and learn.
16:12Yeah.
16:15Come on, Cal.
16:23Bullseye.
16:23I'd be more impressed if it was actually moving.
16:29Come on, buddy.
16:31Come on.
16:32Let's go.
16:32Oh, no.
16:46There must be an easier way to do this.
16:52Like ordering fish at a nice restaurant, look.
16:56I caught a tree.
16:59Hang on, I'll give you, I'll give you a hand there.
17:03Oh.
17:04Oh, what did you catch?
17:06I'm getting his luck.
17:07Oh, look at you.
17:08You've got, well.
17:09I'll go get it.
17:10No, that's all right.
17:11Just, we'll just leave it here for now.
17:14Sit her down there.
17:17Sorry.
17:18That's okay.
17:19Why don't you try my rod right here?
17:21There we go.
17:22Now, take the rod in your right hand.
17:24Like this?
17:25Uh, no.
17:26No.
17:27Uh, you've got to hold it a little more, um.
17:30Up here, like this?
17:31Put the, turn your, what the hell here?
17:34You don't mind?
17:35No, I don't mind.
17:36Okay, right over this way.
17:39Okay.
17:40Okay.
17:41Okay.
17:42Okay.
17:43Okay.
17:44Okay.
17:45Okay.
17:46Okay.
17:47Okay.
17:48Right over this way.
17:51There we go.
17:53I didn't know fishing was a team sport.
17:55Yeah, me neither.
17:58Okay.
17:59Now, what we want to do, get the line wet a little bit there.
18:05And back and forth, strip a little bit out at the same time.
18:09Pick a spot in the water and drop it.
18:12Right there.
18:13Ah.
18:14Perfect aim.
18:15Strip the line in as it goes down the river.
18:19All right.
18:20Strip it in, follow.
18:24Line down with the tip of your rod.
18:28And...
18:29Here we go.
18:30Okay.
18:31I'm fishing.
18:32You are fishing.
18:33Uh-oh.
18:34What's happening?
18:35Is it stuck?
18:36Oh, it's stuck again.
18:37You just caught yourself a fish.
18:38Oh, really?
18:39Yes.
18:40You did it.
18:41Ah!
18:42Good, Amy?
18:43I'm going to see you.
18:44Good.
18:45Good, Amy.
18:46Good.
18:47Good.
18:48Good.
18:49Good.
18:50Good.
18:51Good.
18:52Good.
18:53Good.
18:54Good.
18:55Good.
18:56Good.
18:57Good.
18:58Good.
18:59Good.
19:00Good.
19:01Good.
19:02Good.
19:03Good.
19:04Good.
19:05Good.
19:06Good.
19:07That looks good.
19:16Well, you can tell that horse has a lot more jump in it.
19:19It's not him that has a problem with the height.
19:21It's me.
19:22I mean, I've been working him over these low fences
19:24just until I feel like we're more of a team.
19:28You know, when Mom used to coach me,
19:32she could talk me through anything.
19:34And if that didn't work, she'd just hop up on my horse
19:37and show me how it was done.
19:40Lou, why don't you help your sister out?
19:43What are you talking about, Dad?
19:45Well, last I remember,
19:49you got more jumping ribbons than you could fit on a wall.
19:52Come on, you want to talk about fearless?
19:54You remember that Spencerville classic?
19:56You remember that?
19:58Rain and mud and thunder and no way you were going to scratch?
20:01Yeah, but I don't compete anymore, Dad.
20:04That was ages ago.
20:05And, um, Spartan is really particular about who rides him.
20:10Well, Spartan's really particular.
20:14No, if you haven't done it for a while, I understand.
20:17You know, shouldn't even try.
20:21You should have seen your sister back in the day.
20:23She'd attack those jumps.
20:26Come on, Lou, when you see Amy up here,
20:27don't you feel like getting back in the saddle again?
20:29I understand if you haven't done it for a while
20:33and you're afraid.
20:37You're afraid?
20:40No.
20:46Yeah, give me a leg up, would you?
20:48Oh, this is crazy.
21:01Just tell them the truth.
21:02Shut up, Amy.
21:04And don't you say a word
21:05until I get this demon horse over a jump.
21:07This isn't a good idea.
21:19Watch.
21:28Wow.
21:29Look at her go.
21:30Make-up rider 5-12,
21:46Tim Fleming.
21:54Daddy!
21:54Daddy!
21:55Daddy!
22:00That was great.
22:08She still had it.
22:10Lou, that was great, hon.
22:12Why don't you try this gate over here?
22:18Lou.
22:24What was that about?
22:30I was then, Dad.
22:39Amy told me.
22:39I swear.
22:41Lou, I just never figured you'd stop riding.
22:44Well, I'm glad you guys finally found something else
22:45to talk about besides horses.
22:47Now you can talk about me.
22:50I just don't get it.
22:53You were on a horse before you could walk.
22:58I was then, Dad.
22:58That was delicious.
23:13Who would ever have guessed
23:14that you're so handy with a frying pan?
23:18One of my hidden talents.
23:19mystery of jack bartlett folding for my very eyes
23:25no mystery really i'm a pretty straightforward guy i like working with my hands i only shave
23:36when the mood strikes me and that's not too often i've never been on an all-inclusive vacation and
23:43you couldn't pay me to get on a cruise ship can i say the rest you like horses sometimes more than
23:53the people that ride them you don't see the point in buying a new truck even though they changed the
24:00model 10 years ago and even though it seems where this is going you didn't bring me up here to
24:08propose well that's the thing i uh you know i haven't done a lot of socializing since my wife

25:06oh no i hated that being chauffeured around
25:09you had to take the bus
25:11i still made her show in millerville though
25:14and that's when she finally noticed me
25:19spent her honeymoon right here
25:22and then uh then after the funeral i i spread her ashes in the river
25:27that sounds like quite a love affair
25:33i'm very flattered that you brought me here
25:39i didn't mean to go on but
25:42i just don't want any misunderstandings or surprises if
25:48whatever this is continues past the little fishing trip here
25:53well whatever this is
25:56i hope it does continue otherwise i've got a few hundred dollars worth of fishing equipment
26:00i'll never use again
26:02to whatever it is
26:07do whatever this is
26:10well look at that
26:25that's not such a bad idea
26:28although the choice of cow leaves a little something to be desired
26:31all right
26:50well i'll uh
26:52i guess i'll get going
26:55yeah i guess
26:57see ya
26:58bye bad
27:00okay
27:01you know girls
27:07just seeing you standing there like that
27:13the two of you
27:14that reminds me how hard it used to be to say goodbye
27:18lou you had all those curls
27:22amy you just wanted to get back with that pony all the time
27:26yeah
27:27i guess you were always saying goodbye huh dad
27:31yeah
27:31yeah
27:32in the rodeo days
27:33you two were just
27:36so small i could pick you both up at the same time and just
27:42breathe in
27:45oh
27:46i thought you were um talking about
27:49the big goodbye
27:51i don't really remember much hugging
27:55back then
27:56well
28:05i'm not that far out of reach
28:11these days huh
28:12just a couple miles down the road

39:59It's okay, Lou.
40:00No, it is not okay.
40:01It's not okay, and it's never enough with you, is it?
40:04How many times do I have to pick myself up out of the dirt
40:06and get back on just to make you happy?
40:09And now look at you.
40:09You're going to do the same thing to Amy
40:10after everything that happened to you?
40:12What do you mean, my accident?
40:14Why do you think I stopped riding?
40:21Lou, it's just one of those things.
40:24Well, not to me, it wasn't.
40:25Well, you ride horses, you fall off.
40:27You fall off, you get hurt,
40:28but you always get back on.
40:30Even if it means a couple months in traction.
40:32Yeah, or a couple years in rehab,
40:34or your family falls apart.
40:35You're going to go to your house.
40:38It's going to be a little bit better.
40:39You're going to sleep, I'm going to sleep,

41:34You wouldn't have believed it.
41:36The tow truck guy couldn't even get the tire off.
41:38He couldn't even work the...
41:41You know, there's always a risk when you get up on a horse.
41:58You sound exactly like Dad.
42:02You know, he hasn't changed much.
42:04He still doesn't know when to stop pushing.
42:08Neither do you.
42:13It would have been a lot easier just to never see him again.
42:17Yeah, well, maybe that was a mistake.
42:20No.
42:21It wasn't.
42:24I know he's not perfect, but...
42:28I don't know.
42:29I...
42:30I kind of think he's okay.
42:33I always thought you would.
42:34You used to tap dance?
42:35I took tap dancing lessons for three years every Saturday.
42:49And I quit tap dancing around the same time I quit riding, but you don't see anyone making a big deal about that.
42:55Yeah.
42:58You looked amazing on Spartan.
43:02The way you cleared that fence, there was air to spare.
43:06Your position wasn't so bad either.
43:08I can't believe I did that.
43:12Shaking so hard.
43:14I mean, I'm shaking right now just thinking about it.
43:17Come on.
43:23That crash course, you never finish death.
43:30Oh, Mel.
43:31Oh.
43:59How am I doing?
44:00Great.
44:01Just remember to breathe.
44:06Anything you want to talk about?
44:09Nope.
44:11We'll do with just sitting.
44:13Okay, I'm ready.
44:15You sure?
44:19Ready as I'll ever be.
44:23So let's take the long way home
44:27Every moment I spend with you.
44:28Let's make it slow.
44:29So slow.
44:30We'll mark the moments as they go.
44:34We'll mark the moments as they go.
