00:00And he looked at me, kind of like, he's joking, he said, I'm gonna get yours.
00:03Welcome to WatchMojo. And today, we're counting down our picks for the most famous scandals in
00:09showbiz that arose from broken trust. These high-profile betrayals were extensively publicized
00:15and ended up creating personal or professional bad blood between celebs.
00:20Took a long time to deal with, and it's a very slow grieving process on my end.
00:25Number 10. The C.C. DeVille debacle at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards.
00:33Rock and roll in the 1990s was in a league of its own, electrifying but messy.
00:43One of the most prominent bands at the time, Poison, was invited to perform at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards,
00:54but their performance was seemingly derailed by guitarist C.C. DeVille.
00:58He was supposed to play unskinny bop, but he apparently launched into Talk Dirty to Me instead,
01:03throwing the band off.
01:14Some say it was a genuine mistake due to a misunderstanding on stage,
01:18while others suggested it was sabotage.
01:21The flub is also widely attributed to DeVille's alleged alcohol and substance use.
01:26Later, he reportedly got into a brawl with frontman Bret Michaels backstage,
01:30but it was the band's reputation that took the real hit.
01:38Number 9. Britney Spears' Custody Battle and Conservatorship.
01:43The Toxic Singer's 2007 divorce from ex-husband Kevin Federline
01:47came with a contentious battle for their two sons.
01:49All I care about is getting 50% custody of my sons.
01:55You know, I can't.
01:58I don't.
01:59Nothing else mattered to me.
02:01Per reports, the pair initially had joint custody,
02:04but Britney later lost physical custody.
02:07After a 2008 incident where she allegedly refused to return her children to their father,
02:12her visitation rights were suspended.
02:13That same year, she was reportedly hospitalized for her mental health involuntarily,
02:19and eventually placed under the conservatorship of her father,
02:22Jamie Spears, and attorney Andrew M. Wallet.
02:25Britney's father, Jamie Spears, stepped in to take drastic action,
02:30placing her under a conservatorship.
02:33The strict legal order meant he controlled everything,
02:36her money, who she talked to,
02:38and even what she ate.
02:40Years later, Spears moved to terminate the conservatorship,
02:43claiming she faced extensive mistreatment at the hands of her conservators.
02:47Fans and fellow celebrities rallied behind the Free Britney banner,
02:51and her conservatorship ended in 2021.
02:54Her most ardent fans, the legions of the Free Britney movement,
02:58celebrating outside.
02:59I'm just so, so happy.
03:01She deserves all of the freedom.
03:03We're feeling great.
03:04So excited.
03:04As long as Britney's happy, we're happy.
03:06Number 8. Taylor Swift's Beef with Scooter Braun
03:09In 2018, the multi-Grammy winning singer concluded her working relationship with Big Machine Records
03:15and signed with Universal Music Group.
03:18I've always wanted to own my own music, since I started making my music.
03:21And you probably don't know this, but most of your favorite artists do not own their work.
03:26Months later, Big Machine was sold to Scooter Braun,
03:29along with the masters, to all the T-Swift albums recorded under the label.
03:33Notably, the songstress had apparently tried to buy her masters from Big Machine previously,
03:38but to no avail.
03:40I made it very clear that I wanted to be able to buy my music.
03:43That opportunity was not given to me, and it was sold to somebody else.
03:47It was doubly offensive that her work now belonged to a man
03:50who allegedly hadn't been the kindest to her.
03:53In order to regain agency over her work,
03:56she revealed plans to re-record her first six albums.
03:59Meanwhile, Braun reportedly sold her masters to a third party,
04:03identified as Shamrock Holdings.
04:05Finally, in 2025, Taylor purchased her music catalog,
04:09victoriously ending a years-long battle.
04:11Yeah, this changed my life.
04:13I can't believe it still.
04:15Number 7.
04:16Diana, Princess of Wales' Panorama Interview.
04:19On November 20th, 1995,
04:22BBC One released an episode of their famed docuseries, Panorama,
04:26where journalist Martin Bashir interviewed Princess Diana.
04:29I was a separated wife to the Prince of Wales.
04:32I was a problem, full stop.
04:33Never happened before.
04:34What do we do with her?
04:36Can't we back her off to somewhere quietly,
04:38rather than campaign against her?
04:40She won't go quietly.
04:41That's the problem.
04:42I'll fight till the end.
04:43This interview featured bombshell claims
04:45about the late princess's marriage to now King Charles III,
04:49and his relationship with the UK's current queen consort, Camilla.
04:53You might be wondering how such an interview was even possible.
04:55I had warned Diana very clearly and apologized.
05:00And she said,
05:01oh, don't worry, Carlos, which is what she called me.
05:04You know, it's nice to see you.
05:06It doesn't matter at all.
05:07And I thought that was it.
05:08I still take full responsibility
05:10for introducing this man to Diana.
05:12Well, according to Princess Diana's brother, Charles Spencer,
05:16her trust was allegedly earned through forged bank documents
05:19claiming her family was being spied on.
05:21In 2021, an investigation headed by John Dyson,
05:24a former UK Supreme Court judge,
05:27found Bashir guilty of securing the interview through deception
05:30and violating the BBC's editorial conduct.
05:33Lord Dyson's verdict on the BBC was also damning.
05:37He said it had fallen short of its high standards of integrity,
05:42criticizing it for covering up in its public statements
05:45what it knew about how Martin Bashir had got the interview.
05:50Number six,
05:51when Mutt Lang cheated on Shania Twain.
05:54He was married to the literal queen of country pop,
05:56yet allegedly stepped out on her.
05:58Shania Twain and Mutt Lang tied the knot in 1993
06:09and welcomed son Aja in 2001.
06:12However, in 2008,
06:14it was reported that Lang had allegedly been having an affair
06:17with his wife's best friend,
06:18Marianne Thiebaud,
06:19who was married to Frédéric Thiebaud at the time.
06:22But betrayal is a little bit,
06:24um,
06:26that's,
06:26that's harder to take.
06:28Yeah,
06:28I struggled more with that.
06:29Twain's divorce from Lang was finalized in 2010,
06:32and the Any Man of Mine songstress married Frédéric in 2011.
06:36Years later,
06:37when she was asked about her cheating ex-husband
06:39on The Great Company podcast with Jamie Lang,
06:42she emphasized that she didn't hate the man.
06:44However,
06:45in her classic sassy Shania way,
06:47she says his great mistake was his to live with.
06:50Do I hate my ex-husband for making a mistake?
06:53No.
06:54It's his mistake.
06:55Hmm.
06:57It's a good way to put it right.
06:58Not my mistake.
06:59Yeah,
06:59not your mistake.
07:00So sad for him that he made such a great mistake.
07:04It's a great way.
07:04That he has to live with.
07:05Number five,
07:06Johnny Carson and Joan Rivers' feud.
07:09The king of late night television gave the comedian her big break.
07:12I had been working eight years in Greenwich Village and nothing,
07:16and he said,
07:17God bless him,
07:17you're going to be a star.
07:18It changed my life.
07:21After several failed audition attempts,
07:22she finally appeared on The Tonight Show during his stint as a host
07:25and quickly became a permanent guest host.
07:28As her popularity rose,
07:30Fox offered her her own late night talk show,
07:32and she took the opportunity.
07:34However,
07:34Carson allegedly found out about it through Fox.
07:37Suddenly became a threat to Carson.
07:40And he did everything he said I never told him.
07:43First one I called was Carson.
07:45In an article for The Hollywood Reporter,
07:48Joan claimed Carson was the first person she called,
07:51but he apparently hung up on her and refused to speak to her again.
07:54Later,
07:55he allegedly told the press that she never reached out to him.
07:58Rivers went on to call Carson a, quote,
08:00bad man,
08:01who, quote,
08:02absolutely tried to kill her.
08:04Mean.
08:05Mean son of a bitch.
08:07Number four,
08:08Elizabeth Taylor's affair with Eddie Fisher.
08:10The Butterfield 8-star's love life was rife with scandals.
08:15What would you have done?
08:16I don't know.
08:17Following the death of her third husband, Mike Todd,
08:20she began a romantic relationship with his friend, Eddie Fisher.
08:23The only problem was Fisher being married to Taylor's friend,
08:26actress Debbie Reynolds at the time.
08:29Reynolds later told People Magazine that she was the one who sent Fisher to comfort Taylor after Todd's passing.
08:34I really owe Elizabeth a favor for breaking that whole situation.
08:39But I don't blame her for the break.
08:40I blame Eddie for the break.
08:42Fisher claimed he had already parted ways with Debbie before he got with Elizabeth.
08:46Reynolds and Fisher divorced in 1959,
08:49the same year he married Taylor.
08:51In an interview Liz gave to Richard Merriman,
08:54featured in the documentary Elizabeth Taylor,
08:56The Lost Tapes,
08:57the actress admitted to never loving Eddie
08:59and called their marriage a, quote,
09:01big friggin awful mistake.
09:03She talks a lot about the regrets and joys that she had with the various marriages,
09:09in which there were many marriages.
09:12So she's just unusually forthright in these tapes.
09:18Number three,
09:19when William Randolph Hearst was determined to bring Orson Welles down.
09:23Can you imagine one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time,
09:27Citizen Kane, never being released?
09:29We have no secrets from our readers, Mr. Bernstein.
09:31Mr. Thatcher is one of our most devoted readers.
09:34According to reports,
09:35that's exactly what media mogul,
09:37William Randolph Hearst,
09:38was plotting when he found out the film was loosely based on his life.
09:42Hearst's people allegedly restricted the film's screenings,
09:45threatened legal action,
09:47and attempted to smear Welles' reputation to suppress Citizen Kane.
09:50I felt like a kid in front of a candy store.
09:53Well, tonight, six years later,
09:55I got my candy, all of it.
09:57It's said that Hollywood execs who favored Hearst
09:59even tried to buy the film from RKO Pictures to destroy it.
10:03After the movie came out,
10:05Hearst reportedly barred his newspapers from giving it any coverage.
10:08Although Hearst seemingly succeeded in dampening the film's box office success,
10:12its lasting impact could not be curbed.
10:15You can't do this to me.
10:18I see.
10:21It's you that this is being done to.
10:24Number two,
10:25Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's stolen tape.
10:28In 1995,
10:29the Baywatch star and her rock star husband became victims of a burglary.
10:34It's not funny.
10:35It's not funny.
10:36This is devastating to us.
10:37An electrician who apparently worked for them and had been fired,
10:41stole a safe from their home.
10:42The safe was said to contain personal videos of the couple on their honeymoon in Lake Mead,
10:47which was made into a sex tape.
10:49Its copies ended up in the hands of several parties,
10:52such as Penthouse Magazine and Internet Entertainment Group.
10:55We had a lot of stress.
10:56This really did not help our marriage.
10:58According to reports,
10:59the former publicized the couple's private photograph and details of the video content,
11:04while the latter distributed the tape online.
11:07Pam and Tommy sued both,
11:08but reportedly lost their case against Penthouse
11:11and ultimately settled with IEG.
11:13Needless to say,
11:14the whole ordeal left Pamela traumatized.
11:17It just seems like a little bit over...
11:19It's a little overwhelming and I'm a little bit afraid
11:21because you don't know how things are going to be taken.
11:25But I do think I have a story to tell.

11:44Number 1.
11:45When Michael Jackson bought the Beatles catalog.
11:48In the 80s,
11:49Sir Paul McCartney and the King of Pop had quite the rapport.
11:52Not only were the two icons collaborating,
11:54giving us hits like Say Say Say and The Girl Is Mine,
11:58but they were also close pals.
11:59It's a funny thing.
12:00We had quite a good little relationship.
12:02During their friendship,
12:03Paul once advised MJ to invest in music publishing.
12:07At the time,
12:08Jackson had quipped that he'd owned the Beatles catalog one day.
12:11The Hey Jude singer laughed it off,
12:13but Michael wasn't kidding.
12:14You know,
12:15I thought that was a joke.
12:16And then I just got wrong up and said,
12:17he's got yours.
12:18In 1985,
12:20the smooth criminal crooner bought ATV Music,
12:22which gave him the rights to 251 Beatles songs.
12:26After this,
12:27Paul's relationship with Michael seemingly soured.
12:29He kept saying,
12:30that's just business, Paul.
12:31Finally,
12:32in 2017,
12:33the English musician made a confidential deal with Sony slash ATV
12:37over the Beatles back catalog,
12:39closing a decades long chapter.
12:41Which of these betrayals shocked you the most?
