00:00In this vintage cricket classic, witness a young 22-year-old Anil Khomblé weaving magic
00:06with the ball.
00:07It was the second test against England at Chennai in February 1993, and Anil Khomblé
00:12produced a spell-binding performance that would mark the dawn of a legendary career.
00:18In England's second innings, the leg spinner bowed with remarkable precision and discipline,
00:23claiming 6 for 64 in 21 overs, including seven maidens.
00:28This spell broke England's resistance and guided India to a commanding victory by an
00:33inning and 22 runs.
00:34Anil Khomblé victims read like a roll call of England's middle order.
00:39Robin Smith, Neil Fairbrother, Richard Blackley, Chris Lewis, Ian Salisbury and Paul Jarvis,
00:45all undone by his relentless accuracy and deceptive bounce.
00:50Let us relive that spell of 1993, the day young Anil Khomblé announced himself to the
00:56cricketing world, spinning a deer to a glory and etching his name into the golden pages
01:01of cricket history.
01:03Now it's to be Anil Khomblé.
01:04He's taken over from Venkatapati Raju and he's bowling at the pavilion end to Robin Smith.
01:08Pars out, it's caught by Amre at short leg.
01:15Kumblé is struck almost immediately on his return to the attack and what was promising
01:16to be a very fine innings from Robin Smith comes to an end on 56.
01:23caught by Amore at short leg, Cumblay has struck almost immediately on his return to the attack
01:29and what was promising to be a very fine innings from Robin Smith comes to an end on 56.
01:36Yeah it's a shame not a very good shot from Robin Smith he just poked at the ball really
01:42almost got there a bit too soon in that kind of rigid way that he plays just pushing at the ball
01:48and look it goes quite high it's firm when you push firm at the ball the ball goes firmly and usually
01:56goes high in the air. Amore makes no mistake yet again at short leg England's now 82 for four.
02:07As said for a leg spinner three men there in the covers and then you see he's got three catchy men
02:14on the offside but most of the wickets come through bat and pads and lbws.
02:20That's out it's gone Blake has left one too many alone
02:24again Cumblay just letting the ball come on with the line of the ball there a little bit of top spin
02:30and the off stamp has gone. Well that's a sad end for Richard Blakey but not a particularly auspicious shot
02:39he's one of those batsmen in England's team who cannot convince himself that Cumblay
02:43makes the ball come in with the arm most of the time he hardly balls the leg spinner he's letting
02:49it go and it runs an x-ray so there's no chip or anything but he's off the field today and I
02:54hope will be needed tomorrow. Oh it's up in the air and Krabaka is underneath it and takes the catch
03:04Fairbrother is out and that is England's sixth wicket down for 99.
03:11Well Fairbrother obviously decided that if the ball is picked up within range he's gonna have a go at it
03:19the earlier one turned a little bit so he got it with the swing but this one went straight through
03:23which is what uh Anil Cumblay keeps on doing he doesn't turn his leg spinners and a top edge and
03:30a simple catch to Manos Prabako
03:38The England 12th man had a long talk to both Lewis and Salisbury
03:44and England have lost their seventh wicket at 172 and that seemed to be a leg break from Cumblay that
03:59turned the fraction. Well this is quite amazing uh Anil Cumblay getting the ball to turn from leg to off
04:07even on this turning wicket he hasn't managed to turn that one excepting once in the first innings to hit
04:14and now here is the beauty of a delivery and has beaten Salisbury all ends up
04:22172 for seven
04:27the new batsman is Paul Jarvis taking the place of Ian Salisbury
04:32and the ball turned just enough not a big turn for Anil Cumblay even on this turning track Cumblay has
04:41not been able to turn the ball but this time he turned it just enough to beat the defense of Salisbury
04:48and knock back his off stop
04:49so India inching their way towards a four-day victory three more
05:05oh and he's gone that was a fine catch there at backward short leg so the eighth wicket is down
05:12Jarvis is out and 186 is the score the crowd in transports of delight
05:20and the young indian champion showing is a viz also with his hands when it comes to fielding
05:28it was a sharp chance but his reflexes and anticipation was spot on
05:35it's a genuine leg glance upish and Kendall has pouched it
05:44yes my goodness he moved quickly there great anticipation 186 for eight
05:52Philip Tufnel is the new batsman and he's come in because this happened just a moment ago
05:57what a terrific catch this was full-blooded leg glance and Kumblay can hurry off the wicket
06:08well top off the mark and he's got four runs squeezing that one down
06:14the third man and pulled over on the cross with himself for not stopping it
06:18let's have a look at that wicket again see how quickly the ball has gone and Kendall
06:29and that's out finally the wicket comes Chris Lewis makes what really is his first mistake of
06:48this innings a very simple court and ball chance coming straight back to Anil Kumblay
06:53when the ball stopped Chris Lewis has been playing on the up even on this wicket
07:04there's some magnificent shots but this time you can see the ball has stopped it's a very simple catch
07:09to Anil Kumblay England's ninth wicket falls Lewis is out for 117 England now 241 for nine
07:19still an air of anticipation in the crowd one wicket left to fall one ball left in this over
07:31that's over the top there'll be one bounce into into the fence at long on and Kul Tufnel is having fun
07:43well these batsmen have played so well
07:46In those early days, Anil Kumblay's approach to leg spin was distinctive
07:50balling at a brisker pace much like the great PS Chandra Shekhar
07:55he did not rely on extravagant turn instead his strength lay in pace bounce and unerring accuracy
08:02qualities that made him one of the most dependable match winners for India
08:07it was his combination that earned him the affectionate name
08:11Jumbo as his deliveries for a spinner were sad to come as fast as a Jumbo check
08:16over time Anil Kumblay carved his name among the immortals of cricket
08:20a right arm leg spin baller of immense grit and intelligence
08:24he captured 619 wickets in test cricket making him the third highest wicket taker in the history
08:30of the game at the time of his retirement in 2008 he also excelled in the limited overs arena
08:38becoming a key figure in India's ODI side during the 1990s honored as cricketer of the year in 1993
08:46in Indian cricket and later as one of the wisdom cricketer of the year 1996
08:51Anil Kumblay records remain a testament to his enduring brilliance with 35
08:56five wicket hauls and eight ten wickets match hauls in test along with two five wicket hauls in ODIs
09:03he defined consistency and commitment remarkably he bowled 40 850 deliveries in test cricket
09:11the most by an Indian and second most in the world one of the game's true gentleman Anil Kumblay
09:17stands tall among the six ballers to have claimed 900 or more wicket across all formats finishing with
09:24an astonishing 956 wicket in his career if you like this video please comment share and subscribe thank
