00:01Before I was a captain, in the 60s and 70s, my father and other industry pioneers caught over 300 million pounds of king and bared-eye crab from Atka all the way to Attu and down the Aleutian chain.
00:18The Western grounds were the most productive in American fishing history.
00:23Then the crab disappeared.
00:27But everything's changed.
00:30This is how the fleet and my old man convinced me to head back west where it all began.
00:54Well, we're back in Dutch Harbor. We are getting ready for the red king crab season.
01:00Now, this is the second year it's been open in a row. And the quotas are bigger. We're up by about a half a million pounds. We're up over 260% for bared-eye for the tanner crab season.
01:13And Apilio are back. So, I mean, everything's moving. All the pistons are running in the engine right now.
01:20There was a video going around of some big king crab that guys were getting out west.
01:25Look at that thing. Dude, these are some fatties. That's crazy.
01:32These guys were fishing cod with cod pots out west. Now, whether it was just one pot that they filmed or many, I don't know.
01:38But, uh, the reality is, I mean, guys haven't been out west for decades.
01:45You know, you're talking about the past here. And I mean, back then, yes, it was amazing. There was millions made out there.
01:52But, you're talking about today. And that's history. I mean, there is just an enormous idea. Oh, f***. Now what?
02:06I've been looking all over for you, man. You're driving me crazy.
02:23Well, just the boat's right around the corner. I'm trying to tell you.
02:27I'm trying to tell him to meet me at the boat. And then he tells me to meet me at the boat.
02:31Look, don't hit that car. Watch out, old man.
02:33Jonathan.
02:44How many grandbabies you got now?
02:46I mean, are you catching me? I got seven. You can't catch me. My grandkids are like rabbits.
02:51I didn't know we were competing about grandbabies.
02:53You got to catch me. Yeah, I'm competing. How many you got?
02:56Number four. Five months ago. Number four, C.
02:58It's kind of fun, though. Aren't they the best?
03:00They don't have to change diapers, and they stink, and they cry.
03:03It's broke. It's broken here. Take it.
03:05It's so f***. Oh, yeah.
03:08But anyway.
03:10So where are you going to go fish this year?
03:12I know it's not in your DNA to give up numbers.
03:17I'm thinking of traditional grounds east. It's on the other side of the ridge, but that's what I was thinking.
03:22I think that there's still big crab right around that edge.
03:25Out west. I'm talking way out here.
03:30There's a big biomass.
03:32These are going to be big crab, a couple pounds heavier.
03:37It's a long way to go.
03:39If you got 100,000 pounds, and this is $25 a pound, that's $2.5 million, dude.
03:44That'll get my bare new pair of shoes.
03:48You're serious. I know you're...
03:50I'm going whether you go or not, but I would just love to have you with me.
03:53I don't trust anybody else, you know?
03:55You're looking at 150, 200,000 square miles. You know that, right?
03:59Yeah, yeah.
04:00And I'm just saying, if you miss, f***, dude. You're starting over.
04:04I could cover the area twice as fast.
04:10I want to go, but I don't want to take the risk.
04:17Oh, thanks.
04:19Okay, buddy.
04:20Worst case scenario, reach out on the radio.
04:22And keep working on them grandkids, you know?
04:26Good Lord.
04:27Jonathan wants to go out west and give it a try.
04:30And it's a long journey.
04:32And when you do that, it's an expensive journey.
04:35Justifying that kind of risk is, right now, not worth it for me.
04:40SIG is a third-generation fisherman, and I can trust him.
04:49If you have two boats, you have twice as many pots.
04:51You can cover twice as much ground.
04:53It's a risk, but we can have, like, some of the biggest crab we've seen in years.
04:58But this is going to be me.
05:01Just the bandits.
05:03I mean, there's tens of thousands of dollars just in fuel.
05:08And then if you strike out, it's the time.
05:10And the time is what's important here.
05:12You've got to come back, and you're starting from ground zero.
05:15Why would you take a chance like that?
05:18It doesn't pencil out.
05:21Hey, get off, get off!
05:46Get off, get off, get off!
05:49Go up there, guys!
05:50All right, go up there!
05:51Go, go, go, go, go, go!
05:53Go!
05:54Go!
05:55Go, go, go, go!
05:56Go!
05:57Go, everybody!
05:58Go, Max!
05:59We're already fire on, man!
06:00Max!
06:01Go, Max!
06:02We're already fire on, man!
06:03Max!
06:19You guys are going to have to start doing some cardio.
06:26What's going on?
06:28What's up?
06:29What's up?
06:30We drilled.
06:31Roger.
06:32That was about 55 seconds for everybody to get up here.
06:37Yeah, I was in a good dream.
06:40A good dream is going to turn into a bad dream real quick
06:43if you ain't up here in 20 seconds.
06:45Yeah.
06:46We got two and a half, three days steam out west.
06:51Yeah.
06:52If everybody's sleeping, which is going to happen.
06:55Yeah.
06:56That's usually when something happens.
06:58If there's a fire, it's not going to take but a minute
07:03for this boat to sink.
07:08I just want you guys to be ready.
07:11Yes, sir.
07:12Good, that sounds good.
07:13I appreciate all of you.
07:14All right.
07:15It's 2024.
07:18It's my second year on the Titan Explorer.
07:21Last year, I spent a lot of time trying to prove to the owners
07:26that I was worth, you know, what they hired.
07:31But now I want more.
07:33What I have to do to buy this boat is I have to make enough money
07:37to get a portion of it.
07:38But I haven't fished way out west for king crab like the rest of these veterans.
07:49And when you're 450 miles out at sea, the Coast Guard can't get to you in time if you run into trouble.
07:56When you come up here to bear and see the fish, the risk versus reward is really high.
08:09I'm not going to be able to do that.
08:10I'm not going to take care of every possible situation.
08:11I mean, I experienced that last year with Tyler for that fire.
08:16Hey, guys, I got smoke in the bow.
08:20Smoke in the bow.
08:21Smoke in the bow.
08:22Smoke in the bow.
08:23Holy .
08:24Guys, we got some more auto for him, all right?
08:27Oh, .
08:29Boats are made with enclosed spaces with a lot of flammable things.
08:34You know, whether it's wood, insulation, buoys, lines, everything burns.
08:39If you can't get to it to contain it, it can just take out the entire boat.
08:44What do we got there?
08:46What, in the water?
08:47What?
08:48No, no, no.
08:49Whoa.
08:50The fire started with an electrical short, and then it torched off these paint cans.
08:56So it was literally like bombs going off in the bow.
08:59Do we have a head count?
09:01I need to know who is on deck.
09:03Where's Tyler?
09:06And then when we started counting heads, we found out that one of our guys was down there.
09:10Tyler!
09:11Tyler!
09:12Unfortunately, Tyler was down there on his belly on the bottom of that tank.
09:17He could see where the fire was coming from.
09:19We couldn't.
09:20And, you know, Tyler had the presence of mind to shut that emergency hatch down there between
09:25the four peak and the storage line.
09:29He trapped himself inside that hatch.
09:31With Tyler on deck, there's Tyler down right now.
09:34He's on the house.
09:35He's downstairs getting that buoy set up.
09:37And you don't know if he's alive or dead.
09:40Tyler!
09:42Tyler!
09:44He's downstairs getting that buoy set up.
09:48I can hear him screaming from down there.
09:50Get ready to pull that hatch.
09:52You better have a plan when you go west.
09:54If you have a mistake, serious fire.
09:57Get him out!
09:58Get him out!
09:59It's gonna be 18 hours before you might even have a helicopter.
10:04All you can do is focus on the problem.
10:06We got him?
10:07Get him!
10:08Get him inside!
10:11The fire couldn't spread into the gear room.
10:17If that fire spread into the gear room, this boat wouldn't be here right now.
10:23He's all right.
10:24All right.
10:26After all that adrenaline, after you know everything's secure, you know your crew is safe, nobody has any major injuries or anything wrong with them.
10:38Then your body breaks down.
10:39Your mind breaks down.
10:40The emotions start coming out because of the realization of what could have happened.
10:45I just about lost my best friend's son.
10:52My best friend is Kurt Frankenberg.
10:53Tyler Frankenberg was a kid that was trapped down there in that smoke.
10:54You know.
10:55Tyler's like a son to me.
10:57He has been since he was born.
10:58And his life is crazy.
10:59I was like, you know, he's like anything to me.
11:00You know, he's like a son.
11:01It's crazy.
11:02You know, you know what happened.
11:03I was like the dude down there.
11:04He was like the guy that's crazy.
11:05I was like, so, how long the emotions started coming out because of the realization of what could
11:06have happened.
11:07I just about lost my best friend's son.
11:12My best friend is Kurt Frankenberg.
11:15Tyler Frankenberg was a kid that was trapped down there in that smoke, you know.
11:20Tyler is like a son to me.
11:22He has been since he was born.
11:25and his family you know his grandma was basically my surrogate mom when i was a child
11:34to have to call the best man in your wedding a friend of 50 years and tell him that
11:43his son's not coming home how do you live with someone like that
11:47you know i don't want to think about it anymore man i just i don't i don't want to relive it
12:17it should be right here
12:39there she is
12:40okay good trip not bad how about babies okay everything good at home
13:09the kids are doing great but i stood at that gate for a while i didn't almost didn't get on the
13:14plane faster you catch the crab faster you go
13:22are you almost ready we still got to get everything ready as far as the pots the gear the bait and all
13:28that good stuff we picked an area yeah and i think uh if we stay close to town i think it's going to be
13:38a big payoff
13:42but i mean i'm sure you've read the survey right we can always look at it if you want
13:47you got everything
14:00this is the one that we got this year
14:12everything out here in the regular grounds all dark which means east is a safer bet
14:18i see all these dark spots here out to the west this is density this is density large size
14:26just saying but this is you are right there's life
14:30but we don't know specific depths if there is any um it's a needle in a haystack that's the problem
14:40you understand but they're bigger crap
14:42yes but just think about it
14:49i appreciate manny's ambition and that's what it's all about when you're when you're a fisherman
14:54that being said uh she really doesn't know what she's asking for you know
14:59you know last year uh keith had an incident and it just goes to show how when you're alone and
15:09you're out there in the middle of nowhere someone gets hurt it can be a very scary place to be
15:14i don't remember what happened i remember being on the floor
15:37are you all right
15:43bro are you all right
15:49hey bro
15:52talk to me bro
15:58and then you know i came to it right just my left side was numb
16:04i don't want to see myself that week
16:18i don't want to see myself not being in control
16:21u.s coast guard uh sector in anchorage fishing vessel wizard
16:29we've had a some sort of an episode on board here it's my brother his name is keith his left arm
16:37was going numb at this point my concern is that he possibly had a possibly a mini stroke
16:47maybe i was afraid that i was human maybe i was afraid that i wasn't bulletproof
16:51maybe the realization that i was heading out on a plane or helicopter that i was not going to be going
17:00back out with the wizard to fish
17:13i was a hero that day he got his brother to town
17:27you know monty and i fight a lot we're brothers he was really stressed out yelling and screaming and
17:42mad and he's kind of rotten to me but we'll go get past that that's just a older brother i guess
17:52honey and i are only a year apart we've been fighting since we're kids
17:57we've also been fighting for each other since we're kids
17:59there's nobody else on this planet that i wouldn't go to go to war with than my brother
18:10the reality is had he been far from shore who knows what would happen he was close to shore
18:17that's probably what saved his life so how far away you are being on your own it's part of the equation
18:29we're gonna head farthest west we've ever been i hope that it's all gonna work out we get on the
18:49motherland so yeah we'll see how it rolls pretty excited you know because big boys out there
18:56let's go ahead and cut it loose guys go on fishing hold fishing baby
19:15our adac crew starts right here in dutch arbor to go out west seems a lot to me you know
19:21i can't stop to think but this is the same route my granddad ernest clyde schubert took
19:28world war ii bought the japanese
19:35a lot of people don't know it right after pearl harbor was bombed dutch harbor was also bombed
19:42the united states had a guy named colonel castner and he uh got scouts from all over the united states
19:49and alaska guys that could live off the land guys that could go unnoticed and like ghosts invisible
19:55they were called the cutthroats castner's cutthroats and instrumental in stopping the japanese from coming
19:59up the illusion chain my granddad ernest clyde schubert was a cutthroat and they called him shoot
20:09glad that those guys fought for us so we have freedom today because of him we're here
20:14it could be the smartest thing i've ever done it could be the stupidest thing i've ever done but
20:20that's the way we live
20:21i've ever done it could be the best of them
20:28get neil out here
20:32wait hey smoke smoke neil neil
20:35holy
20:35fire guys fire
20:41ready help me what's going on
20:43got a lot of smoke i don't know what's going on neil's up there it's not good
21:00all right
21:03i think i got it out
21:05neil's coming out is it right neil yeah
21:09you let me know what's going on guys
21:13look like the bay freezer was on fire but i got it it turned the power off
21:23the fire's out though right fire is out roger thanks russell thank you keep me posted
21:30that's my scariest thing is your boat comes to fire we're all asleep traveling and you wouldn't
21:35have seen the smoke you're a dead man these wires look like they melted right here and hopefully
21:42they didn't shorten nothing out inside the box and this was just happened to be in the way this made
21:48a lot of smoke i don't know what kind of damage we have i don't even know if i can get it working again
21:53we got another breaker well we're gonna have to freaking do some rewiring it's all melting so it's gonna
22:04be a while hopefully we can fix it otherwise we're screwed thank you neil
22:09we gotta be able to fix that we need our bait bruiser we lose our bait we're we're
22:23effed effed tango uniform tits up
22:39right now we're doing the coast guard inspection yep it's not expired the service date take a look at
23:04your epurb i can't go out without it there you go perfect
23:12they're trying to make sure that when we go out there we all come back alive
23:18can we grab your stability book and take a look at it um felipe it's a skinny yellow book
23:24let's i'm gonna review some stuff with you so
23:32i feel comfortable that your life raft and your training wrap are hooked up correctly
23:36do we get any any weights on the pot yet so 835 832 778. 11 suits are good okay
23:44i think we're looking good jake um something changes something comes up or you got a question
23:49about anything you can always reach out to us all right be safe crossing the dock
23:53most dangerous place hey there lovely lady hey yo how's it going got the coast guard inspection done
24:09we're good with the state we're good with the feds we just need a little bit more gear to be rigged
24:14i won't be ready to go out west um yeah well i mean i know you know what you're doing but
24:32you know we just we're barely a year out from everything that happened with the saga
24:37and i don't know
24:44i'm just trying to do the best i can do to provide for us and it seems like the best option to
24:53grow the empire and buy the boat because this is your literally your wheelhouse
25:00it just sounds like a big risk it just feels like a lot i'm just kind of worried about wanting to talk
25:05to you okay all right i love you love you too okay bye bye
25:14i know it's expensive to go all the way out there if i don't make money
25:27all those decisions impact everything that happens back home my kids my wife and a year ago i lost
25:35everything
25:47the door's chain
25:53prepossession
25:54i was standing in the back of my own wheelhouse and i couldn't get in and i didn't know why
26:04because the amount of money that i put into the saga was enough to buy it twice
26:09and that was up
26:17what's the deal there's liens on the boat the bank they said nobody's allowed on it
26:24they own the boat i don't know how i just feel like such a fool
26:29lenny the worst partner i've ever had in my entire life i mean did he not pay his bills
26:39what happened i still don't know what what happened because alls i've gotten was an empty telephone
26:47i'm still in a lawsuit paying lawyers to figure out when i'm gonna get my money back
26:54i'm going to uh get some of my stuff now and oh it's sad this is a salvage mission
27:03this is hard
27:18i got uh because i didn't just lose my boat i also lost my crew which was my family
27:26i remember loading stuff off a big 450 a big dirt bike
27:33and i was trying to tow the totes because my four-wheelers didn't work
27:44i remember i dumped it like i fell on it
27:52did you go down oh my hip
27:55and then my crew pulled up in the truck and i remember asking him you know do you think you
28:08can help me come on you know i remember i said can you help me and he said you know i can't i gotta i
28:20gotta go crew members on another boat and i was just like kidding me dude
28:38i don't know what i'm doing unless you've been homeless before and left by society you wouldn't
28:45understand what it's like to be left by your own people it's one of the hardest things a human
28:51being can go through and only very few know it stripped of all my money and title i'll never forget
28:59that night that night was brutal losing the saga it really dropped me down a peg it's like going from
29:11being a captain to a deckhand but you know i really do respect jenna as a partner in my business
29:19and if she thinks something's too risky a lot of the time she's right
29:28i've earned respect as a captain on the titan but if i go all the way out west and fail
29:36i will get fired every decision that i make impacts my family and i don't want to lose everything again
29:49but uh we got a breaker problem it's a breaker for the uh
30:19bait freezer this is the most important thing on the boat for crab fishing it keeps all of our bait
30:24not frozen we don't have frozen bait we use the bait as fast as we can try to catch as much
30:28crab as we can until it got rotten then pretty much have to go to town pretty nasty within three days
30:37we're a long ways from home
30:42great second island it was a key location in world war ii
30:46we're going to have to move it's one of the major refueling stations you can still see a lot of
30:51structures here i can see quonset huts and bunkers and stuff oh yeah this is definitely a remnant of
31:02what they call the forgotten war you know when the japanese took over the illusion islands the cutthroats
31:10actually traveled to attu on a submarine from dutch arbor my granddad ernest klein schupert he was
31:17actually one of the the kids that was dropped off on the islands and they actually held off the japanese
31:23for a couple days while our military snuck around the back of the island and came on through the back
31:27i think 5000 japanese died in those 18 days and cutthroats and colonel castner actually won the war
31:38in the illusion chain all right this is the moment of truth come on baby
31:47waiting for the compressor to kick on come on baby there it goes
31:52it's working say that again it seems like it's working right
32:02okay i think we go back to work thank you
32:06don't go anywhere without neil hilstrand
32:11took us four days to get here and no one's fished out here for over 30 years so the crab got to be
32:17stockpiled out there seriously if i'm right this is going to be a huge payday
32:26the long ways you know i kind of am nervous about this but we all need paychecks for our families
32:34so we got to hit them heaven and hell is this close out on the ocean
32:41it's a gamble especially when you're out way out west all along that is scary
32:59we're probably going to stay up pretty late tonight get as many pots on as we can
33:22and i want to be locked and loaded and leave on time price is going to be high king crab excited
33:31knock on wood dude everything's going to be perfect
33:41guys are trying to get uh boat ready
33:43you know right now plan is to stay close to town minimize cost and see if we can't get in and out
33:53safely
34:01i'm here
34:03yeah we got an eight pound load of airing on its way
34:07how many pounds
34:09fifteen thousand
34:10so what was that
34:13i got here it says uh fb northwestern
34:17all right let me get back to you
34:23mandy can you come up here yeah
34:30that's twice of what we need
34:37what's going on how much bait did you guys order they're telling me 15 000 pounds of bait is on the
34:43way that's right who ordered that i ordered it you ordered 15 000 pounds yeah
34:48typically we can get by for a long time on eight
34:56we talked about going further out there you're talking about going out west again
35:01yeah
35:03what are you not understanding okay if i made up my mind to go west then i would do that and i'd let
35:09you know but we haven't said that you've said that you have that in your head
35:20my granddad was out here and he was the same age as i was when i first came out here when i was 18.
