Butterflies are usually active during the day. They use their long tongues to drink nectar from flowers, and while doing so, they help carry pollen from one flower to another — playing an important role as pollinators in nature.

Butterflies are both delicate and ecologically important. Climate change, habitat loss, and pesticides threaten their populations. Planting flowers and reducing chemical use can help protect them.

Some species even migrate; for example, the Monarch butterfly travels thousands of kilometers each year from North America to Mexico.

00:00Butterflies are graceful and colorful insects belonging to the Lepidoptera order.
00:06There are about 18,000 species of butterflies worldwide.

00:16They have two pairs of large wings covered with tiny scales.

00:28Egg, caterpillar, larva, pupa, chrysalis, and adult butterfly.
00:35This transformation is called metamorphosis.
