00:07involves castration and removing all the evidence of male genitalia that's awful doesn't it it hurts
00:13me just asking the question you are actually then capable of sexual intimacy with a man to come to
00:20my flexible nights i'll show you yeah she is she tula next donahue today at four on waff48
00:29please welcome caroline cossey or as she is better known tula
00:38nice to have you here thank you thanks so much for coming take us back to those early days when
00:44we would all see your faces on the magazine covers and yet at that point the secret was not out what
00:51what was that like was it like living a lie uh well i don't think it was any lie no um i just i had a
00:58career that i did um and i was fortunate to sort of get into modeling i think most girls like to sort of
01:04get into modeling and i was one of the lucky ones and and i i my career was very successful but
01:09exciting also um same thing yes i sort of traveled the world made lots of money and i didn't sort of
01:16see that my past should have caught up with me and if it did it should have been the sort of my
01:22decision whether i should have sort of come out with it openly what was it your intent that it not
01:26catch up with you actually oh god yes i mean if we have a little sort of problem about ourselves we
01:31try to keep it a secret and uh you know i didn't think it was anyone's business what the problems i
01:37went through as a child i was as a model you're taking on your book to space value sure and uh i
01:44didn't think it was anyone's problem that problems i had there was some irony then in the was it was
01:49it smirnoff vodka for which there was a photograph taken of you water skiing actually behind nessie
01:55the loch ness monster okay and and the uh the caption read uh well they said anything could happen
02:04so when you read that caption did it have any particular special meaning for you no the tabloids
02:09played that up after the the exposure sort of came out and what have you but no it was just for you it
02:14wasn't a different kind of double on top no it's just another job actually what what about the fear of
02:22people finding out what would you do to make sure that they didn't find out that you'd had a sex change
02:26operation did you do anything i didn't do anything to sort of um hide it no i mean i it was just a sort of
02:32a situation that didn't sort of arise if anyone asked me point blank i would say yes on a personal
02:37level but in a public manner i didn't think it was anyone's business so what's extremely interesting
02:44though is that you posed in playboy before it was even divulged that's right yes and playboy known for
02:51you know focusing on glamorous women never showing transsexuals right that must have been
02:57was it funny to you that that you know it's never been funny you know people sort of say well you're
03:02sort of conned and you know that's what sort of made me sort of feel that i wanted to do my book
03:07because it's never been a situation where i've sort of like i've been conning everyone you know this is
03:12my life and the problems i've had and that's why i did my book but when i did playboy it was yeah you
03:17know just another job i'd sort of been you know doing various campaigns and pinups and what have you and
03:23playboy came along and i did that but i did it many years later for the cause in my fight which
03:30is to sort of show the world that transsexuals can be attractive can be sexy and we don't look like
03:35men in drag you know you have had the most amazing life it really has you're what 30 37 now yes 37
03:47and it's been full of all kinds of exciting experiences now you're embarking on this new
03:51marriage with david yeah we refer to you as a young engineering student you're 27 right yes so this is
03:58the older woman in your life exactly yeah now did you know about the fact that uh caroline had been a
04:05man no well when you first met her did she look familiar to you because she was a world famous model
04:11yeah i i remember reading the article about the uh the bond james bond film incident and i'd forgotten
04:20about and that was about 10 years ago so uh it's amazing how the two of you met
04:26yeah quite by chance it was tell us how you met well i was traveling to europe i was backpacking
04:32through europe for five months and i was i got back to england and i was traveling through london
04:38and i was i got off my bus at the wrong time about a mile a mile down the road further than i should
04:45have and when i got off the bus there was a i came across a shopping mall and since i didn't know how long
04:52i was going to be on the road i decided to stop in for lunch and she was sitting at this restaurant
04:58she was sitting at the wrong restaurant she was meeting a friend for lunch you were on the wrong
05:02bus and you were at the wrong restaurant that's right so you were both at the right place at the
05:06right exactly that's right yeah and you noticed her right away yes yeah did you just walk over and
05:12talk to him yeah i um this restaurant looked like it at the at the cashier they only had pastries
05:20on display so i wanted to make sure i had a proper meal on my stomach and so i went up to her and
05:26asked her can i get a proper meal here and she said sure and showed me the menu and we started talking
05:31then i asked her if we could sit down if i could sit down and join her for lunch and she said yeah you
05:38can sit down for five minutes i said i said i have a friend coming and so i said but you didn't
05:45recognize her right away did you no no okay now did you suspect what did you think when he i mean
05:50he's a handsome young man but i'm sure that lots of handsome young men approach you what was your
05:55reaction when he approached you um well he was canadian i mean if he would have been english i would
06:01have just just bugger off or something he was canadian and he had a very endearing accent and i said sure
06:08but you can only stay five minutes i'm meeting someone for lunch but as it turned out jacob sort of
06:13turned up and we all got talking and jacob's son was doing engineering and david's in engineering
06:20and then as it happens david's dad is born four miles from where i was born in east anglia norfolk
06:26norwich yes so that sort of got us off for a good start and we had a lot to talk about
06:32were the sparks flying right from the beginning well how can you look in these eyes yes really did you
06:39feel something right from the beginning dave yes the one when our eyes first met and we smiled at
06:45each other is i don't know it seemed like there's a lot of subliminal information getting exchanged
06:51there love at first sight yeah yeah i think so yeah but i was still a little cautious because i thought
06:57you know he was asking me an awful lot of questions but not the ones that i'm used to
07:01you know when i meet sort of english people they don't good luck with your campaign and
07:05uh you know i think you're doing great things for transsexuals and everything and i thought well
07:09does he know or what because he didn't sort of approach the subject and uh um i said you know
07:15when we exchanged numbers and then he called me i just sort of felt he needs to know if he doesn't
07:21and i didn't feel he did um so i said you need to buy my book and he said well what's what is this book
07:29all about and i said well i can't really say it's um a bit difficult to talk about but uh gone by it and
07:34i told him the title my story and uh he went out he spent the weekend looking for it and found it and
07:40read it and then and then you knew and then i knew and it didn't and then it obviously didn't bother you
07:46oh it did oh okay no my my reaction wasn't a good one at all what did you think
07:52oh i you know my reaction was my god that was a man you know and i couldn't believe it but you know
08:00she told me her her her parting statement was go read my book and you might not want to call me back
08:09so uh did you have second thoughts at all david about calling her no no that i didn't because i
08:16didn't think anything was gonna i didn't think we were gonna start a relationship so i wanted to go
08:23back and meet her and not talk uh solely about transsexualism but just to carry on where we left
08:31off so you were intrigued to some degree there was something intriguing in all of this but uh we had
08:36such a nice time at lunch i just wanted to continue that so i called her back i called yeah i called her
08:42back and when i headed back to london and looked her up and we got together and here you are that's
08:48it planning the wedding as women tracy is very interesting tracy worked for many years as a very
09:04famous runway model you know you always hear those rumors that some of the runway models aren't women
09:09you're right and she worked a lot in europe uh did you have to keep the sexuality a secret and what
09:15happened in the dressing room i did have to keep the sexuality a secret because i wanted to continue
09:21my career as a fashion model which i have worked for in paris new york and i've been in major magazines
09:28nothing happens in the dressing room because all the women walk around in high heels panties and g-strings
09:33so you don't see the panty line so i didn't have a problem there my problem came about
09:39as my career was taking off my problem came about through a phone call to my agent which
09:46they told them what i was and so my agent just stopped sending me out and i left new york to work
09:53in paris which i worked for a major designer in his showroom do you know who did that to you yes i do
10:00it's a hairdresser that i had been working with over six months somebody was just so mean-spirited that
10:06they would do something well yes jealousy comes in all forms yes now your mother is in the audience
10:11is that correct bobby yes she is bobby there you are not bad at all how are you doing one of the
10:19questions people always ask us and what do your parents think of this she's gorgeous yeah she
10:25really she's always been gorgeous and she's always been she and even when she was he she's always been
10:32she yeah has this caused you to be closer or not as close close very protective very close yes
10:40yes thank you mother's pretty nice pretty good heads in the right
10:44i had a boyfriend but he left me for somebody else he left you for somebody else what what'd you
11:01do because i know i didn't do nothing i treated him like you gave him everything you wanted everything
11:06everything i used to i can't name not even one thing that he paid because he never paid me for nothing
11:14i used to take him out now he was 17. he was real nice you know but he then had a job and stuff so i
11:20understood that but i don't know after a year and a half i guess you know we're not together anymore
11:30so now who are you going with now nobody so you're all alone
11:37are you uh working the street sometimes if i really need to i got a i got a job now oh you got a job
11:47now i'm working eight away that's why i dance topless oh she's dancing topless now so you're making
11:53somebody i do um i entertain the rye carrie and sally's well let me hear a little something just a
11:59little something no i don't i don't i don't like sing like her i you know a lot of people tell me i look
12:06like her but i used to have lighter brown hair you know my hair color was like hers but i died it
12:12like two days ago well i gotta ask you one question i mean don't be offended i mean i'm a straight
12:20shooter you know around there there's a lot of transsexuals you know the whole bit first of all
12:25you gotta tell me are you a guy or a girl i mean you look like a girl but you know i mean you're pretty
12:30both in one oh so you're you're a guy but you look up i'm a transsexual okay what what is that
12:38exactly you know i mean if you had to describe what is that um i consider transsexual like the most
12:48intelligent people in the world because like we used to be boys at first so we know what boys want
12:57and now we're women and we know what women want we know what what are two sides you understand if like
13:05somebody who has a friend for transsexual they could give some such good advice you know because
13:12they've been through everything you know it's not really easy to be a transsexual you know very very
13:19hard he saw a real pretty girl and i was everything that he wanted in a woman you know but he found out
13:27he got depressed he freaked out you know he never hit me or nothing but he told me you know like we're not
13:34gonna be together blah blah blah but we started calling each other and going out and blah blah blah
13:38so you know because he liked it he liked it me for me yes that means he fell in love with me as a girl
13:47and he liked me and i saw anything that i want hit the jackpot but i told him he freaked out but
13:53you know he said that he's not gonna let what i got down there come between us you know us being
14:00together you won't take the operation will you would you take the operation you would definitely
14:05that's my struggle baby you know it's really frustrating it's really really really how hard
14:12are you working to for this operation are you trying to raise money well um i told my mother that i was
14:18scared so my grandmother then i have problems with my mother she doesn't want to see me it's been three
14:24years since i haven't seen my mother she knows three years she knows she knows they threw me out they
14:31really rejected me they showed me that they really don't care about me because if they would have care
14:37about me first of all they wouldn't let me down like that you know regardless you know i didn't have
14:44a piece they know that i don't have a place to go a piece of bread to eat that's not what i say they
14:50turned their back on you that's what you said they don't care i was sitting in the street for two
14:56years already okay because of my mother i don't put all the blame on her but i put part of the blame for
15:04being so naive and so stupid and not accept me is there any chance in your life you think you could ever
15:09make amends with your family look at i wish that's like a lot of times i cry many times and i still
15:22go to the same because i miss my mother i miss my grandmother i miss my father i miss everybody every
15:29single body because i have to give them up for my way of being

16:43i love my wife and i'm not gay and i'm not you know and that's that's what's weird about this to have your
16:49sexuality question and your moral fiber question and all that when all i was doing was
16:54trying to be nice to somebody eddie murphy tells et that his wife and children were out of
16:58town says he wanted something to read and went to a late night newsstand he stopped here and picked
17:03up the suspected transsexual at 4 45 in the morning he says he thought he was aiding a distraught
17:09woman looks like a pretty hawaiian girl in the corner crying looks like she was crying she
17:15goes oh eddie murphy and she noticed him at the light she recognized eddie murphy oh my god
17:19so i go what are you doing that why are you out here working the streets so late she goes on
17:23i'm on my way home can you give me a ride home police tailed them for two miles before pulling
17:27him over police say he is guilty of no misconduct but there was a warrant out for the alleged prostitute
17:34a judge has ordered that man 20 year old addison siuli to serve 90 days in jail murphy says he
17:40has often stopped to try to help prostitutes but here is what he said in an impromptu news conference
17:47on the set of his new movie being a good samaritan blew up in my face basically that
17:53i'm i'm never giving anyone a lift
18:02this is me you understand no i'm not a woman no i am not a man i am octavia only reason why
18:10they keep girls like me in the closet i'll change everyone's way of thinking about our lifestyle you
18:17got big time celebrities that go around and and in their cars picking up trends having with them and
18:25then getting on national tv making fun of them our whole world is being run by undercover that run around
18:34talking about how straight they are people are so busy wasting their time bashing
18:40facts when they can be doing something a lot more positive these are the people you have to worry about
18:53the lord says originally a specific lifestyle that was done extremely carefully skillful and
19:06dedicated camouflage so that you couldn't detect it from the real thing and he says that both women
19:12and men used to do this there are women in history who dressed as men lived as men and nobody knew
19:18until the day the undertaker was undressing mr mortimer's body and saw that underneath his binder he had
19:27breasts so throughout history men and women have done this but god said in those days you had to have
19:34this it was almost like a calling and he said that the ones who perfected the art form of appearing
19:40female i mean fooling the eye i mean even fooling the opposite sex up close who used to get into
19:47relationships with them god says that those people were treated almost as gods so if miss jaja only
19:59in the trans community was known to be a man but everywhere else at her job everywhere else people
20:05thought that she was a woman she was seen as a top level guru in this art of camouflage and the lord said
20:14that to make this thing work he was telling me this i did not know these things he said you had to
20:18move away from your family that was the first painful sacrifice i was not going to make this prophecy
20:24but the lord said make this prophecy because it speaks directly to your times and when you make this
20:30prophecy tell them that my heart's in this matter is that i am grieved when people despise
20:38my laws to consistently follow their own way he said to me celestial the heart in every prophecy i have
20:47given you is my grief and anger because my way is despised as mankind has followed their own way so
20:56the first sacrifice that you made with this thing is that you had to leave family you couldn't live at
21:01home because most people were strong bible believers in those days and this was just not tolerated
21:06god said that many people got on buses and they left the towns and the people who originally knew
21:11them you changed your hair you grew it out you styled it different you got wigs you got um implants
21:18whatever you had to do and he said you would even change your eye color you did as much with the
21:22physical appearance to look different then came the clothing you spent a lot of time experimenting
21:30privately with makeup different looks with clothing different fits because you're not a woman and you
21:36had to get a feel for it so people would go all the way out of their neighborhood all the way out of
21:42town and say that they were doing shopping for their wife and then he when asked well what's your wife's
21:47size they would say oh you know she's a little bit of a big girl because if you're six five you're not
21:54shopping from anywhere i'm shopping so they would take them to those sections and then they would act as if
22:01they were shopping for grandmothers and mothers and other family and then the age of being able to
22:08have parcels delivered to the door came in and you could finally shop online in peace get your makeup
22:14and not have it to explain to anyone why you were buying so many different shades and why you were trying
22:19them on your hand instead of bringing your sister or your wife with you god said it was a time where these
22:26people strove to find others like them because this was a massive secret and you can only imagine the
22:35loneliness that went along with this life as he was explaining this to me i was understanding the sadness
22:43in the eyes of some of the men i was passing by they looked so pained because he says you're alone
22:51you're hiding the biggest secret of your life you're looking for maybe even one person that you
22:59can trust with this who won't reject you and you're just trying to make sense of it all because you are
23:05finding it a very hard job to be a woman and so i was seeing the different types of men broad shoulders
23:14slim shoulders and what god was showing me is that the kind of man that has a body that can get away
23:19with it is the most successful transsexual so the man who is naturally in build in facial structure
23:28in not growing a lot of facial hair in not having a very pronounced neck or adam's apple a man who has
23:34narrower shoulders than usual is the man who is in those days and even now still among the most successful
23:44transsexuals that man is going to be the top level shape shifter because he can move seamlessly between
23:51his maleness in the female avatar so to speak and so as i'm walking past these men um
24:02nobody was speaking to me there was just all this weird energy and some of them were like
24:06like like they wanted me to go it was just a clash of worlds even though nobody was speaking and um
24:14sally's fantasy female pageant help us crown a winner next the girls you're looking at are
24:20pre-operative transsexuals now what that means is they have male organs but they live their lives as
24:27women most of them we'll explain as we go along tandy we're going to start with you you've been living as a
24:33woman for about seven years tell me about this transformation process well it started about seven
24:39years ago and what i decided was is that um there's a stage that i call an in-between stage and it's
24:47where i don't really know if you look like a boy or kind of a girl because at some point going through
24:52this you have to start living as a woman only to you know mentally start you know preparing yourself so
24:59rather than put my family through that i decided to leave so i lost six years of my family i kept in
25:06touch with them we wrote and we talked on the phone corresponded but they never really saw me and i
25:12didn't really want them to see me until i was just about to the end i wanted them to see you now oh yeah
25:20they have now you worked as a professional dancer you danced on american bandstand as a woman or a man
25:26a boy a boy okay and dance fever and when you're in a relationship at what point do you disclose
25:39what is unusual about you i was just in a relationship we're separated now it was six years
25:44and when i met this man uh we dated for a while and there was really nothing serious going on so there
25:51was no need to tell him and i really don't think there's any need to tell anybody unless there's
25:56some sort if there's any kind of intimacy then it should be exposed but if not i don't see why you
26:02should reveal yourself so that relationship i told him and he thought about it and then he said well i
26:08guess you know he said this is crazy but he said you know maybe i'll have to make some you know changes
26:15to deal with you know what we have to deal with but i find that telling men if i'm interested in them the
26:21best way to do it is just to tell them because the first thing they think when you beat around
26:25the bush well there's something i have to tell you first thing they think is you're pregnant you're
26:31married you're just something totally different than what they're going to get it doesn't occur to
26:37them that no you're going to say i'm one of you christine what about your relationships with men
26:45do you wait if you're going to uh i only wait till the point where it starts getting physical
26:51if i see that the relationship with the man is going to get physical then i feel the need to tell
26:56him because i feel he should know what he's getting into do you tell him just before the relationship
27:03no just before the first kiss i go oh baby wait a minute i have to tell you something
27:07i don't think we should do this so we have a little conversation and and then i tell them and
27:12you know i don't think you feel them out early right i don't feel a man out first and see i don't think
27:19that it's really that important to tell them when you first meet them what what usually happens is you
27:25know you go out on a date and from there you can deduce whether or not you like this person to see them
27:32again and you get vibes and if you feel like there's like a sort of chemistry then you know
27:40that's when you should tell them at that moment and you can also tell whether you should say something
27:46or not because you can pick up when a man is going to be able to be very open-minded and understand and
27:51then you can pick up when he says things and you know never mind because next time you can you can
27:57not be that important to tell them at times because of the date may go wrong and you may not
28:03really like him he may not really like you so then there's no harm in it so why not just continue
28:07let me give you a little background tandy is from texas 38 28 39 she's 27 years old she's been living
28:14as a woman for six to seven years some hormones some silicone some electrolysis in fact almost didn't
28:22make it to the pageant because of some spots christine is 23 born in puerto rico which where in
28:30puerto rico uh santurce in santurce that's near san juan lives in new york 36 26 38 and has been living
28:37as a woman for eight years hormones no surgery works as a makeup artist and a model to the people who are
28:45your clients do they know they do not it's going to be surprise surprise okay for some mothers too i
28:54think tanay am i saying it right tonight tonight 20 born in new york 34 26 38 has been living as a female
29:03for three years is a professional dancer when you told your father you wanted to be a dancer what was
29:09the uh outcome um well my father my stepfather it was it was um he was a tractor trailer driver so he
29:20thought that i was going to be this big man i was going to either be in construction or i was going to
29:26be a doctor or lawyer and i told him daddy i want to be a dancer and i never forget the look on his face
29:32he said a dancer boy why do you want to be a dancer i said because i just want to dance he said you're
29:38gonna grow up to be a sissy boy well dad that's the way it goes maya is 30 years old born in chicago 38 28 39
29:51has been living as a female for six years has been an entertainer for about 12 years uh has been mistaken
30:00for a little girl when you were growing up um ever since ever since i was a baby i've always been mistaken
30:06for a little girl my parents always had to um correct people tell them you know it's our little
30:13son you're you know how what's the attitude of the family now um they're very um supportive which
30:20is wonderful which you know helps a lot especially when you're going through this transition do you
30:25keep in touch with them all the time my brother lives with me my 18 year old brother and he's very
30:33understanding i mean before i came to the show i had to tell him because he assumed that looking
30:38like this and after these six years i was gone he assumed that everything was completed so i had to
30:43sit down and talk to him and explain everything to him and i was amazed at the sensitivity of this this
30:50young man he said that's it that's all you have to tell me that's all he said i thought you were going
30:55to tell me something like you were going to leave again and i wasn't going to have you around oh you
31:00know so but it's worth it how were you um 17 late so it didn't occur to you clear till you were 17
31:12wow well i was four and a half i i knew i wasn't a boy and i just assumed i was a girl there weren't
31:18that many other choices when i was growing up right you know but now i don't consider well yeah but now
31:24i don't consider myself a woman what do you consider yourself well not man not woman i just there
31:30isn't any word for it right now you know yeah that's the way i feel as well because i don't feel like
31:38a woman totally or a man i feel like a transition i beyond sexuality yeah do you feel like a third sex yeah
31:48a fourth a fifth a sixth you know how about you you feel like a woman i feel like a woman although
31:55i am a transsexual woman i'm i am a woman now have you all had the surgery yeah i have nose job yeah
32:03did you all remove your penises yes no you didn't remove your no no they took it up inside yeah turn it
32:12inside out it it is pretty weird how close we really are together male and female that it's just
32:18like a turning inside out and that's exactly exactly it's have you ever considered undergoing surgery
32:24third here uh the redhead anybody um yes i'm yeah i'm planning on it in the future yes if you live a
32:31hundred percent uh woman dressed as a woman how do straight men react to you when you're out
32:37how do you would how would you react to me well that's what they think that they don't
32:42make you think he's straight am i gay yes i'm sorry
32:50uh you just said you're gay but straight if a straight man approach you how would you react to
32:54them i say i'm gay because i'm trying to relate to a society who doesn't who's not going to be able
32:58to classify whether i'm gay or straight i live my life as a woman so to me i live my life as a
33:02heterosexual woman i'm attracted to men but you knowing that i'm on the show in the
33:06label that they put there as a gay man who's dressing as a woman you would consider me a gay
33:10man i'm attracted to men so depending on how you look at me it's depending whether i'm straight
33:14or gay did you get off your manager no but wait but wait i just want to say i know i know i know
33:22kelly and she's not out to trick or fool anybody's you know do they get angry do they get upset when
33:27they find out that you're um i can usually tell by the way somebody's somebody's character in the first
33:3215 minutes if they open up a conversation with i hate faggots i know i'm not going to tell them
33:36somebody who's really attracted to you as as a woman um if somebody's attracted to me as a woman
33:41and i feel that there's a possibility of a relationship there of course eventually there
33:44is going to be that time where i have to say there's a little something i need to share with you
33:51that we all have skeletons in our closet he made me an axe murderer and not telling me yet yeah you
33:55you know i've never had a problem and we'll be back in just a moment of the tyra show daytime
