Join me on an epic solo camping adventure with my trusty companion Max, as we spend 2 nights on the serene Johnston Lake in Algonquin Park. This backcountry camping trip was a first for Max, and I was excited to see how she would handle the great outdoors. We hiked through the beautiful trails of Algonquin, taking in the stunning scenery and enjoying quality time together. As we set up camp, I shared some of my favorite camping food, including military rations and MRE's, which were a interesting experience for both of us. This camping vlog showcases the beauty of Johnston Lake and the surrounding area, and highlights the importance of choosing dog friendly campsites when backpacking with your furry friend. With its pristine lakes and diverse wildlife, Algonquin Park is a backpacker's paradise, and I feel lucky to have experienced it with Max by my side. From hiking with dogs to trying new camping food, this trip was an unforgettable experience, and I'm excited to share it with you.

00:00:00Hey everyone, welcome to MattyMax Adventures. Today Max and I are at Easter Pines Trail and
00:00:17we're going to Johnson Lake for two nights so hope you enjoy.
00:00:22We're going to that site right there. We're currently about here so it shouldn't be too bad.
00:00:39We've got Berm Lake over here, Max Raring to Go, Little Round of Johnson Lake over there, and we're on the trail.
00:01:01This part of the trail is pretty cool. Walking on top of a ridge. Got Berm Lake down there.
00:01:09Max all excited. Backpack keeps living. And we're going up that way.
00:01:19And we're on the final leg of getting to the site.
00:01:30All right, we made it to our site. It's the last 50 to 70 feet to go.
00:01:49There we go, Maxie. We made it.
00:02:16Now time to set up camp. I think I might have over-packed a bit. That was heavy.
00:02:28All right, we got camp set up around Johnson Lake on the Goffman.
00:02:35Got the tent set up there.
00:02:40Slowly getting this stuff set up. That's just miscellaneous stuff.
00:02:44Towel in case we go swimming. It's going to be like 30 degrees today, October 6th.
00:02:49That's not bad. Max's bed there for the day.
00:02:55Just hanging bag there for now.
00:02:58Got a 50-foot run strung up for Max.
00:03:02Goes from that tree down to that tree. Got our water bag hung up over here.
00:03:14So we got filtered water.
00:03:18Got the lake to ourself today.
00:03:20Not supposed to be anybody else on the lake until tomorrow.
00:03:23It's Max's first time camping. She seems to like it so far.
00:03:34Very beautiful spot.
00:03:35So there, Maxie. You come across the snake.
00:03:50So yeah, so it's a nice sight.
00:03:53A little more cleaning up to do.
00:03:55And dig out the fire pit. Still got to gather firewood.
00:03:58Thunderboxes up over that way.
00:04:06Time for some lunch.
00:04:09I'll have some military poutine.
00:04:17Chair blew over.
00:04:19Wind's starting to pick up.
00:04:20A couple more minutes and this will be ready.
00:04:44Well, there's what the poutine looks like.
00:04:46Good.
00:04:49Fries and chicken or something.
00:04:54Hope it tastes good.
00:04:57So now it's just a lazy part of the day.
00:05:00Wind's picked up.
00:05:04It's just kind of relaxing.
00:05:08My first time solo camping.
00:05:10Max's first time camping.
00:05:13So far she's enjoying it.
00:05:15Exploring everywhere.
00:05:17In and out of the lake.
00:05:23She likes to explore.
00:05:23Oh, there comes the wind again.
00:05:30I'll go show you where
00:05:32Thunderbox is from our site.
00:05:35There's a site there.
00:05:42Go up this way.
00:05:45There's a tiny bit.
00:05:47There's a few more clips.
00:05:48Oh, just X-ray Max.
00:05:49소x and
00:06:03I'll move now.
00:06:06There's a few more clips.
00:06:07I'll move out.
00:06:07There's a few more clips.
00:06:08I'll move to the park at the top.
00:06:09There's a few more clips.
00:06:10I'll move on to the bottom.
00:06:10I got my toilet paper all hung up and a ziploc bag and there's the thunder box.
00:06:22So this big tree here, that used to be the tree that you would hang your food from to
00:06:31keep it away from the bears. It looks like it blew down or broke or whatever so they cut
00:06:42it down. We got the old cable here. Come on Max. And a new spot for hanging the food.
00:07:01It isn't too far away. It's kind of in a better location I think. Just kind of got a bushwhack
00:07:20to get to it. That spot's right here. I don't know if you can see the cables. It's
00:07:31strung from there to up there. So we still got to do that. But we'll do that after supper.
00:07:38A little good distance from the tent and that. This whole area is covered in winter green.
00:07:58I hope someone didn't crap in the thunder box away from there. Come on. Dirty people.
00:08:05At least they tried to bury it. Max seems to love it out here. So we just wander and she doesn't
00:08:12go far though. She pretty much stays in sight.
00:08:19It's pretty much in sight.
00:08:20It's pretty much in sight.
00:08:21It's pretty much in sight.
00:08:26It's pretty much in sight.
00:08:27It's pretty much in sight.
00:08:33It's pretty much in sight.
00:08:34It's pretty much in sight.
00:08:40it's pretty much in sight.
00:08:41Alright for supper tonight. We've got more Canadian IMPs from the military.
00:08:47All right, for supper tonight, we've got more Canadian IMPs from the military, and tonight's
00:09:11is Indian chicken, and some tortillas, and some sliced apples for dessert, just in a pouch
00:09:40like this, place an open pouch in a pot of boiling water, return water to boil, and heat
00:09:57for five minutes, remove pouch, open up the notches, and serve.
00:10:04So, we'll just put that in there like that, let that come up the temp.
00:10:13We've got, what, 320 calories, five grams saturated fats, one gram trans fat, 85 milligrams cholesterol,
00:10:29950 milligrams of sodium, three grams fiber, 12 gram sugars, and 38 grams of protein.
00:10:44It has diced white chicken meat, diced tomatoes, onions, water, sauce, garlic powder, lemon juice,
00:11:03soy, green bell peppers, red bell peppers, dried currants, raisins, butter, enriched wheat flour,
00:11:13modified corn starch, and coconut.
00:11:18There we go, my least favorite thing on earth.
00:11:22And tomato paste, so, I've had it before, it's pretty good.
00:11:29Alright, I'll be back soon as it's heated, and I'll pour it into my cup, so you can all see.
00:11:37Alright, we've got it heated.
00:11:44Check it out.
00:11:49No mickery, you're not getting any.
00:11:52I'm actually back.
00:11:56Alright, let's see how it looks.
00:12:03It smells good.
00:12:15Got all the chunks and everything in there.

00:13:09we got the sliced apples. I'm sure they just
00:13:13look like apples that you get into like a... yeah.
00:13:19That's what I thought.
00:13:25Just like a canned apple. Should be
00:13:29pretty good.
00:13:37They're crispy.
00:13:41They're good. They're almost like a...

00:17:07Let's go.
00:17:09Max now have a nice little campfire before bed. Watch the sun go down.
00:17:20I think she's ready for bed. She's been sitting there staring at the tent for a while.
00:17:34But she was just in the lake, so she's got to dry off a bit.
00:17:39Alright, everyone. Max and I are going to bed. It was a long day. We'll see you in the morning.
00:17:54Max is already asleep.
00:18:01Well, good morning. It's about quarter after seven in the morning.
00:18:07Late rain right now. It started around 5 a.m.
00:18:16It's a pretty quiet night. Heard the owls. Max was spooked a few times with some of the noises in the bush.
00:18:24But she did pretty good. Everything's all wet. Just got to make coffee, eat breakfast.
00:18:36But we've got a nice start of a sunrise over there.
00:18:43Alright, for breakfast we're going to have sausage and hash browns.
00:18:55Should be alright. And the coffee is...
00:18:59Just use two of the Nescafe.
00:19:01Fresh and creamy.
00:19:03Keep that cool down for a bit.
00:19:07Alright, got that in there. Now we've just got to heat it.
00:19:13Alright, let's pop it into the bowl.
00:19:29And see how it looks.
00:19:46Chunks of sausage and potatoes.
00:19:49Should be good and hurty.
00:19:52Alright, let's see how it tastes.
00:19:58A little chunk of sausage first.
00:20:04Yep, it's your normal breakfast sausage.
00:20:13It's very good.
00:20:15Potato.
00:20:20Oh, this is good.
00:20:25It's a good meal for a nice damp morning.
00:20:37Hopefully the rain holds up today because Max and I are going on a hike to go see some glacier boulders.
00:20:47So, looking forward to that.
00:20:50There we go. It's a little after 9.
00:20:55Probably 20 after 9.
00:20:57Sun's starting to break out.
00:21:02I think it might be a nice day.
00:21:06Just charging up my watch.
00:21:09Got the phone all charged up.
00:21:13Max is raring to go for a hike.
00:21:16So, we're going to go up to Buchholz Lake.
00:21:19That's where the boulder garden is.
00:21:23Then, see how we're doing for time.
00:21:25Might walk up to High Falls.
00:21:30Then, hike back for lunch.
00:21:35Then, don't know.
00:21:38Might go on another hike.
00:21:39Not sure.
00:21:42But, Max is behaving.
00:21:43She doesn't go too far.
00:21:44Not chasing all the squirrels like I thought she would.
00:21:48She's pretty much my shadow.
00:21:51Wherever I go, she goes.
00:21:54Alright.
00:21:55I'll be back once we start our hike.
00:21:57Alright.
00:21:58We're leaving our site.
00:22:00Going up towards Buchholz Lake.
00:22:03Looks like we've got more rain coming in.
00:22:05So, I've got my new bare skin rain jacket on.
00:22:09We'll see how that works.
00:22:12And, uh...
00:22:16Let's see some interesting sights, I hope.
00:22:21I hope.
00:22:29Come on, Max.
00:22:34Good girl.
00:22:51Nice quartz in this rock.
00:23:12Alright, we made it to the fork on the trail.
00:23:15We're gonna go up that way, Buchholz.
00:23:18And that loops around.
00:23:19And we can get a side trail to High Falls from there.
00:23:23And over here is the bottom end of, uh...
00:23:27Johnson Lake.
00:23:31So, let's go.

00:24:13Pretty nice.
00:24:24That's just up in those big boulders.
00:24:26It's steep downhill.
00:24:29It's nice scenery back in here.

00:36:20Then I took a temple.
00:36:21I got the same thing.

00:36:24It's a habits that would never get the same stuff.
00:36:26That's so pretty good.
00:36:27Well, I did not go the same thing once.
00:36:28I was putting my friend in the whole country.
00:36:31I didn't invest it.
00:36:32And I was doing Pete and the guy I did not set it even after the mall.
00:36:33It's a long way here.
00:36:34I do the same thing.

00:36:37it means I took it all.

00:40:38There's big boulders everywhere.
00:40:51I'm wrapping around to the back side of the boulders.
00:41:04I'm wrapping around to the back side of the boulders.
00:41:17There's a lot of trees there.
00:41:27And now we're back on the normal trail.
00:41:30Alright, catch back up you soon.
00:41:32I'm wrapping up the back side of Boo Colts Lake.
00:41:43That's going off again.
00:41:45I smell a little more like a swamp dog.
00:41:47That's okay.
00:41:48Wash her back.
00:41:49Wash her off when we get back to camp.
00:41:51It's been a long walk so far.
00:42:04Almost eight kilometers.
00:42:09Lots of ups and downs.
00:42:10Slippery spots.
00:42:14But we're getting there.
00:42:15Not sure how much farther it is back to the campsite.
00:42:23Could be another maybe eight kilometers.
00:42:28I'm hoping not.
00:42:29We're both pretty exhausted and drenched.
00:42:43There we just finished the Boo Colts Loop.
00:42:46Oh, that's good to know.
00:42:50So that's the way to High Falls.
00:42:52We're not going that way.
00:42:54We're going back on the eastern pines.
00:42:57Acre.
00:43:00Best way back to our campsite.
00:43:04Anything else interesting?
00:43:06Or any updates?
00:43:08I'll be back.
00:43:12There.
00:43:13Nine kilometers in.
00:43:16Still a lot more to go.
00:43:18My hips are burning.
00:43:22You don't realize how out of shape you are until you do a good hike.
00:43:25Anyway.
00:43:26We'll survive.
00:43:30Seems the rain's letting up.
00:43:32It's just all the drops off the trees now.
00:43:35But bearskin jacket's keeping me dry.
00:43:45And that's the main thing.
00:43:46Max is raring to get back to camp.
00:43:47I think I'll give her a treat when we get back.
00:44:00She can have a ration for her lunch.
00:44:02A good hot meal for her.
00:44:08Probably.
00:44:10I think I've got another hash browns.
00:44:13Other sausage and hash browns.
00:44:14Or I might have a bacon and hash browns.
00:44:17But we'll see.
00:44:19All right.
00:44:21I'll update you in a while.
00:44:23Done another one of these little foot bridges.
00:44:26This one seems to be in a lot better shape than the last one.
00:44:29The last one.
00:44:42Pick up the rooted tree right at the end of the trail.
00:44:46Right at the end of the bridge.
00:44:47Another little foot bridge up here.
00:45:02Slow mass.
00:45:04And we are 5.6.
00:45:07Or sorry.
00:45:0810.6.
00:45:11Kilometers into the hike.
00:45:12Should be coming up on Stratton Lake pretty soon.
00:45:21Go slow Max.
00:45:39Yep.
00:45:40We'll go around it.
00:45:42We'll go around this one.
00:45:44Keep going.
00:45:46Keep going.
00:45:47Good girl.
00:45:51There we go.
00:45:54That's better.
00:46:02There we go.
00:46:03There we go.
00:46:04There we go.
00:46:05There we go.
00:46:06There we go.
00:46:08Yeah.
00:46:0910.63 kilometers.
00:46:17Here's the Stratton Lake.
00:46:20Site 5 is that way.
00:46:22I'm assuming the trail goes this way.
00:46:24There we go by all the other sites.
00:46:37Then we'll get to the fork.
00:46:39That goes back up to Johnson.
00:46:40There we go.
00:46:43There we go.
00:46:46Hey, slow Max, slow, slow, this is slippery.
00:47:12A little bit of stratton like there.
00:47:21Oh no, come on, go to the swamp.
00:47:39So this is Stratton Site 4.
00:47:43That's pretty cool seating that people have made.
00:47:48We're just trying to find the main trail here.
00:47:55Does that feel good Max?
00:48:13Good girl.
00:48:23Well, this was the steepest part of the trail so far.
00:48:29Still gotta go down.
00:48:36Yeah, you can go that way to High Falls, but that's a long walk.
00:48:47Oh, here we are.
00:48:51Acre that way.
00:48:53Or the back side of Johnson Lake.
00:48:56And we want to go this way.
00:48:59Okay, stop pulling Max, are you excited to get back to camp?
00:49:05That's where we're going, back to Johnson Lake.
00:49:19Hey, we're back to where we started the Boot Colts Loop.
00:49:24That's where we went up there.
00:49:27Now we're going back to the campsite.
00:49:30Come on Max, leave the chippies alone.
00:49:33So this should be another kilometer, kilometer and a bit from here.
00:49:42We've done 13.73 so far from the campsite.
00:49:54So it should be almost 15 when we get back.
00:50:00We'll see.
00:50:01Alright, I'll meet up if you want to get back to the site.
00:50:03Here we are.
00:50:04We made it back to the site.
00:50:06Max is all happy.
00:50:10Everything is as I left it.
00:50:13Perfect.
00:50:22There she goes for her swim.
00:50:25And final distance, 15.3 kilometers for almost four and a half hours.
00:50:32Now it's time to relax.
00:50:40And for tonight's supper I got the smoked meat with demi-glaze.
00:50:45It just looks like pastrami.
00:50:46Click back Max.
00:50:47You already had yours.
00:50:49I gave her a sausage and hash brown so she gobbled that up quick.
00:50:56Then after I finish this little pile of meat off, then I'm going to have the beans and wieners.
00:51:01And we're going to have a tortilla.
00:51:05So I tried it.
00:51:06Basically it's just pastrami.
00:51:08Which is pretty good.
00:51:10Back with the beans.
00:51:12Alright, back with the beans and wieners.
00:51:15Normal canned beans with some wieners.
00:51:19Can't go wrong with beans and wieners.
00:51:22And Max thinks she's going to get some.
00:51:25Now Max.
00:51:26There Max, I enjoyed her supper.
00:51:30Relaxing by a campfire.
00:51:34Max is in bed.
00:51:45Beautiful lake.
00:51:50Nothing better.
00:51:51I think Max is all tuckered out for the day.
00:51:55She's in her comfy spot.
00:52:00See you in the morning.
00:52:03Well, good morning.
00:52:04It's 7.40am.
00:52:07It's chilly.
00:52:09It's probably about 3 or 4 degrees.
00:52:14Had a good sleep.
00:52:16Max was cold.
00:52:18So I wrapped her in my hoodie.
00:52:20She was happy with that.
00:52:23Nice and calm out here.
00:52:30Got the water on for my coffee.
00:52:33And we'll have breakfast soon.
00:52:36Then it's going to be pack up and leave today.
00:52:42So I'll get back with you as soon as I get breakfast started.
00:52:51Alright.
00:52:52And for breakfast this morning.
00:52:53It's just going to be a light one.
00:52:55Got the good old rationed banana oatmeal.
00:52:59I think Max likes it.
00:53:00No, it's not for you.
00:53:01Before water.
00:53:02Okay, Max.
00:53:03Back up.
00:53:04Back up.
00:53:05Back up.
00:53:06Back up.
00:53:07Back up.
00:53:08Oh.
00:53:09Oh.
00:53:10Oh.
00:53:11Oh.
00:53:12I think Max likes it.
00:53:13Oh.
00:53:14I think Max likes it.
00:53:15No, it's not for you.
00:53:18Not for you.
00:53:21Before water.
00:53:26Okay, Max.
00:53:27Back up.
00:53:28Back up.
00:53:29Back up.
00:53:30Back up.
00:53:38Come back up.
00:53:44Watch out, Mackeys.
00:53:47A little bit more water, there we go, so just like your normal
00:54:16Instant oatmeal
00:55:46All right, we've got everything packed up.
00:55:54It's going to be a heavy load.
00:55:56Just got to finish my coffee.
00:55:59Max is all ready to go.
00:56:02We didn't leave any garbage.
00:56:04A little paper towel and fire pit, but we left it as we found it.
00:56:15All right, I'll meet up with you once we get onto the trail.
00:56:19There, we made it from our site.
00:56:21We're down at site one, followed the trail that comes from over there.
00:56:28This is site one on Johnson Lake, which means we're maybe 45 minutes from the parking lot.
00:56:36Not bad.
00:56:39And I'm tired.
00:56:41My back is heavy.
00:56:44Nice review of the lower end of Johnson Lake.
00:56:52Nice islands out there.
00:56:54The trail goes right beside it, which is nice.
00:57:09Nice and scenic for the walkout.
00:57:12All right, Max is excited to get home.
00:57:23Back to her normal routine.
00:57:30And her warm bed.
00:57:31She was shivering last night.
00:57:32There, we just came off the side trail when we hiked in on Monday.
00:58:02We hiked up that way and from the parking lot going that way was three and a half kilometers or something.
00:58:10So I'm sure this cut out quite a bit.
00:58:15So now we're on the homestretch.
00:58:32Burm Lake on that side.
00:58:50That's the portage from Burm Lake over to Johnson.
00:58:55Which I believe is also the main trail.
00:59:11Max has to get her drink.
00:59:14Good girl.
00:59:14Good girl.
00:59:14Good girl.
00:59:16Good girl.
00:59:18Good girl.
00:59:22Keep going Max.
00:59:27Good girl.
00:59:42Nice view of Burm Lake.
00:59:43Just up ahead by the tree right there.
00:59:53There was a fox.
00:59:55I don't think Max spotted it.
00:59:59I wonder if it's still on the trail.
01:00:06Come on Max.
01:00:07That'll be the first wildlife I've seen out here in two days.
01:00:15Well three days.
01:00:18Besides ducks and loons.
01:00:19I came across another backpacker yesterday on when I was back at the camp.
01:00:31A fellow from Toronto with a nice dog named Maggie.
01:00:36And the fox was in here.
01:00:41So that's probably long gone.
01:00:57Nearing the end of the trail.
01:01:01Back at the footbridge.
01:01:02Bad approach.
01:01:16Oh Max.
01:01:18Back at the jump.
01:01:19No Max.
01:01:20You're not jumping down to that mess.
01:01:24Any moose?
01:01:28No moose.
01:01:31No moose.
01:01:32The water is low.
01:01:46You're not jumping down, Max.
01:01:53Alright, I made it back to the entrance sign.
01:01:58So, we were camping here, yesterday's hike went up, down, around all this way, down here, down this way, then back to camp.
01:02:19And this morning we just went from camp across here and out.
01:02:28There's the parking lot.
01:02:38It was a good hike out. Still tired. Mainly from yesterday, but all looks good.
01:02:50Good. Tarsil here.
01:02:56Alright, buddy. Thanks for watchin'.
01:03:02Please, if you could, describe, like, and share.
01:03:06It means a lot to me, a lot to Max.
01:03:08And, uh, until the next adventure. Go out and explore.
01:03:14There you go, Max.
01:03:16No, you gotta go this way.
01:03:18Tangle up.
01:03:22Get in.
01:03:24Go ahead.
01:03:26Get in.
01:03:27Go ahead.
01:03:28There she is, ready to go home.
01:03:33Say bye.
01:03:34It's a beautiful drive out with all the fall colors.
01:03:41First car scene.
01:03:46Saw a deer when I left Acre.
01:03:50Hoping to see some more.
01:03:52There.
01:03:53Just stopped at the gate.
01:03:55Got my daughter an otter stuffie.
01:03:58I always get her a little souvenir when I come out of the park.
01:04:03And got myself a t-shirt.
01:04:06And Max is relaxing.
01:04:09Alright.
01:04:11Thanks for watchin'.
