00:00The federal government has allocated a total of 419.2 billion ringgit under the 2026 budget,

00:07a 2 billion ringgit decrease from the 421 billion ringgit allocated for 2025.

00:12This is only the second time that the budget has exceeded 400 billion ringgit.

00:16Operational expenditure accounts for 338.2 billion ringgit, or about 80.7% of the budget,

00:23while 81 billion ringgit has been allocated for development expenditure.

00:28The money allocated for operational expenditure is 1.8% higher than the revised 2025 budget,

00:34with emoluments continuing to make up the largest component at 109.4 billion ringgit.

00:40This is mainly due to the second phase of implementation for the public service remuneration

00:44system in January, which will see a basic salary hike of 7% for civil servants in grade 15 and below.

00:51In its 2026 economic outlook report, the Treasury said spending on subsidies and social assistance

00:57was expected to decline by 14.1% to 49 billion ringgit next year, thanks in part to efforts

01:03to move away from blanket subsidies as well as lower global commodity prices.
