00:00Celebrations erupt across the Gaza Strip after U.S. President Donald Trump announced
00:09a breakthrough deal to end the war.
00:11The conflict has left more than 67,000 Palestinians dead since it began, as a response to a Hamas
00:17attack that killed 1,200 Israelis on October 7, 2023.
00:22Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, joined by U.S. envoys, spoke just before
00:27a cabinet vote approving the plan's first phase, an immediate ceasefire, and a return
00:32of Israeli hostages.
00:33We've fought during these two years to achieve our war aims, and the central one of these
00:39war aims is to return the hostages, all of the hostages, the living and the dead.
00:46And we're about to achieve that goal.
00:48A Hamas spokesperson also confirmed it agreed to the deal, which will see about 2,000 Palestinian
00:53prisoners released in exchange for the Israeli hostages.
00:58We have reached an agreement to end the war and aggression against our people and to begin
01:04implementing a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of the occupation forces, the entry of aid,
01:09the opening of the Rafa crossing in both directions, and the exchange of prisoners.
01:15We have received guarantees from the mediating brothers and from the American administration,
01:19all of whom confirm that the war has ended completely.
01:23A major diplomatic victory for U.S. President Donald Trump, U.S. and Israeli flags were projected
01:28on the walls of Jerusalem, and the families of Israeli hostages celebrated, even as explosions
01:35continued to ring out in Gaza throughout the day and overnight.
01:39For those living in the Palestinian enclave, it's a bittersweet moment.
01:42We are very happy with this.
01:46At least we can send our children to schools without having fear.
01:49Thank God we've reached the stage where the war is over, even though our wounds will not
01:54be gone.
01:55Our hearts will continue to weep.
01:57In my family alone, there are 137 martyrs.
02:01It's impossible for the wounds to heal overnight.
02:03The United Nations Aid Agency says they are aiming to ramp up efforts immediately, sending hundreds
02:11of trucks of food and medical supplies.
02:14Amid the celebration and optimism, there's also acknowledgement of the many difficult issues
02:19ahead.
02:20Well, I wouldn't call this plan or framework one that is currently going to guarantee a
02:26lasting peace.
02:27The Israeli leadership continues to disavow and reject the pathway to Palestinian statehood.
02:36And there's no clear commitment that Hamas is going to disarm and try to step off of the
02:45political track or move to the sidelines to make way for a rehabilitated Palestinian authority.
02:53U.S. officials say they will deploy up to 200 troops to Israel as part of a task force
02:59to support stabilization, but that no American forces will enter Gaza.
03:03The focus now shifts to rebuilding and trying to secure a lasting peace in the region.
