President Trump warned of steep 200% tariffs on China if rare-earth magnet exports were curbed, raising fresh concerns over the fragile U.S.-China trade truce. Speaking alongside South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Trump cited airplane parts as leverage, noting China’s reliance on Boeing jets. Rare-earth magnets are crucial for U.S. industries like automotive, electronics, and clean energy, with China controlling nearly 90% of global supply. Analysts caution Trump’s remarks may be more bluff than policy, but tensions over critical minerals remain a flashpoint in trade talks.

00:00President Xi would like me to come to China.
00:02It's a very important relationship.
00:05If we want, I'd put 100%, 200% tariffs on.
00:07We wouldn't do any business with China.
00:09If I played those cards, that would destroy China.
00:11I'm not going to play those cards.
00:13Well, I'm meeting a lot of people.
00:15I mean, it's hard to say that, but I'd like to meet him this year.
00:20President Xi would like me to come to China.
00:22It's a very important relationship.
00:25As you know, we're taking a lot of money in from China
00:28because of the tariffs and the different things.
00:31It's a very important relationship.
00:33We're going to get along good with China.
00:35I hear so many stories about we're not going to allow their students.
00:38We're going to allow their students to come in.
00:40We're going to allow, it's very important, 600,000 students.
00:43It's very important.
00:44But we're going to get along with China.
00:46But it's a different relationship that we have now with China.
00:49It's a much better relationship economically than it was before.
00:53With Biden, boy, what he allowed that, I mean,
00:56they just took him to the cleaners.
00:57You know the expression?
00:58They took him to the cleaners.
01:00I'm sure they have an equal expression in South Korea,
01:03but they took that guy out for a ride like nobody's ever been ridden before.
01:08Terrible.
01:09But we have a very strong relationship, Howard.
01:12I would say economically with China now, it's getting much better.
01:16They have to give us magnets.
01:17If they don't give us magnets, then we have to charge them 200% tariff or something.
01:23But we're not going to have a problem, I don't think, with that.
01:26I think that's perhaps behind us.
01:29You know, China intelligently went and they sort of took a monopoly of the world's magnets.
01:34And nobody needed magnets until they convinced everybody 20 years ago,
01:38let's all do magnets.
01:39There were many other ways that the world could have done.
01:41But so it'll take us probably a year to have them.
01:45We're heavy into the world of magnets now, only from a national security standpoint.
01:50But we have a powerful thing.
01:53It's airplane parts.
01:55They have many Boeing jets.
01:56You know, they had 200 jets that didn't fly.
01:58And I've sent them all, based on his word, I sent them all of the parts so their planes can fly.
02:06I could have held them back.
02:07I didn't do that because of the relationship I have.
02:11And their planes are now flying.
02:13You know, we had 200 of their planes were unable to fly because we were not giving them Boeing parts purposely
02:20because they weren't giving us magnets.
02:22Therefore, we weren't giving them.
02:23But we have a much more powerful thing that's tariffs.
02:25If we wanted to put 100%, 200% tariffs on, we wouldn't do any business with China.
02:32And, you know, it would be okay, too, if we had to.
02:34But the magnet situation, we have tremendous power over them, and they have some power over us with magnets.
02:41We're going to have a lot of magnets in a pretty short period of time.
02:45In fact, we'll have so many we won't know what to do with them.
02:47But you know the story.
02:49It's a very interesting history with magnets.
02:51And really, it's because presidents, not being business people, they allowed that to happen.
02:57And they shouldn't have.
02:59But we have much more.
03:01I mean, look, in terms of playing the cards, we have much bigger and better cards than they do.
03:06But with that being said, I think we have a great relationship.
03:09I spoke to your presidency fairly recently.
03:11And at some point, probably during this year or shortly thereafter, we'll go to China.
03:16And I think we're going to see a magnificent sight.
03:19It's a great country.
03:20Mr. Chairman, most you and President Lee actually are planning to go to China.
03:25You mentioned either this year or next year.
03:27Could you please share more details about your plans going to China and also President Lee?
03:32Well, maybe we'll go together.
03:33Do you want to go together?
03:34We can share a plan.
03:35We'll save energy.
03:36We'll save a little, you know, the ozone layer.
03:43Remember, President Obama used to talk about the ozone layer.
03:47And then he'd fly to Hawaii to play a round of golf at the 747.
03:51Mr. President, I'm going to ask you for the invitation, Mr. Lee.
03:59Well, it's not a bit jokingly, but if you want, you can...
04:01If you want to go, I'm going to get special permission.
04:12I'm sure you can go.
04:12But we're going to have a great relationship with China.
04:16I mean, it's happening.
04:17You see it.
04:18It's happening.
04:19They have some cards.
04:22We have incredible cards, but I don't want to play those cards.
04:24If I played those cards, that would destroy China.
04:27I'm not going to play those cards.
