00:00:00And finally, all-city quarterback and team captain, Luke Moldenar!
00:00:30You know, when we started back in September, everybody said we didn't stand a chance.
00:00:49Our entire front line had graduated. Coach Morgan was going to start three freshmen.
00:00:54But we are six games into the season, and we're still undefeated, so I think we've all proved a lot of people wrong already!
00:01:07But tonight, tonight's our first real big test.
00:01:11We're on the road against Taft, and they're 6-0 also.
00:01:14So I want everybody to get on, all those buses out there, and cheer us on!
00:01:19I can't believe you're not coming. I wasn't just blowing smoke out there. This is a really big game.
00:01:40I know it is, but I have to retake my college boards tomorrow.
00:01:43So?
00:01:44So, the best one get back to 11.30. It could be after midnight before I get home.
00:01:48What, all of a sudden you're Cinderella?
00:01:50We stopped it!
00:01:50Okay, okay, I just, I don't see what the big deal is.
00:01:53The test starts at 7.30.
00:01:55Can't you make it up?
00:01:57Oh, my mom would kill me.
00:01:59She thinks if you don't get an 8-hour sleep and eat a good breakfast, then you're not going to increase your score by 50 points.
00:02:05Then you won't get into an Ivy League college.
00:02:07And if you don't get into an Ivy League college, then...
00:02:09You don't go to Harvard Law and become all rich and famous.
00:02:12Something like that.
00:02:14Then I thought I was under a lot of pressure.
00:02:16I'm sorry.
00:02:17Oh, forget it. Tomorrow night's what I really care about.
00:02:19Try night.
00:02:21The homecoming dance?
00:02:23Oh, my gosh, I completely forgot. I have to go to Portland to see my grandmother.
00:02:26You're kidding, right?
00:02:29Yeah.
00:02:30I'm kidding.
00:02:32No, son, that one's pretty good.
00:02:34I can't wait for the dance.
00:02:38Hey, Luke, let's go, man. We're ready to roll.
00:02:40All right, be right there.
00:02:42You know, it's not too late for you to stow away. We can hide you under one of the pom-poms.
00:02:45Don't tempt me.
00:02:47Oh, come on. You're a teenager. You're supposed to rebel against your mother.
00:02:50All right, Luke, let's go!
00:02:52All right.
00:02:54Come on, Luke, let's go!
00:02:58Bye!
00:02:59All right, boys, let's do this!
00:03:01Woo!
00:03:02Woo!
00:03:03Yeah!
00:03:05Sounds like it was one hell of a game.
00:03:07Taft was leading 26 to 14, and with seven minutes to go, Luke throws for two straight touchdowns.
00:03:13Mm, you missed the best part. And then he ran for 100 yards. The home crowd sat in stunned silence. His visiting quarterback, Luke Moldenhauer, picked apart the heralded Taft defense with one precision pass after another. I couldn't believe I missed this game.
00:03:28Once this round of SATs are over, you're going to have plenty of free time.
00:03:32I know.
00:03:32You want a little pancake?
00:03:33No, I'm stuffed.
00:03:35You know, if the team keeps playing like this, it's going to make it a lot easier to raise the money for the new stadium edition.
00:03:41Why is that?
00:03:42Human nature.
00:03:43Everybody wants to back a winner.
00:03:45So, how are those college applications coming?
00:03:48You mean the application to Dover?
00:03:50Well, once you get your new test scores, it should be all ready to go.
00:03:53I'll do it, Mom.
00:03:54Oh, well, I got to go right now.
00:03:58Oh, I need your snack.
00:03:59Thanks.
00:04:02See you later.
00:04:04Knock, I'm dead, honey.
00:04:05I'll be home around 30.
00:04:07Break a leg.
00:04:08Thanks.
00:04:14Look really that good a play?
00:04:16With a little luck, I think you could be all state.
00:04:20Why?
00:04:21No, I don't know.
00:04:22It just seems like they're getting pretty serious.
00:04:26Well, he's a good-looking kid.
00:04:28He's the star quarterback.
00:04:30That good or bad?
00:04:31Well, it's high school.
00:04:33It's just...
00:04:35I wouldn't worry about it.
00:04:37You sure?
00:04:40Pretty sure.
00:04:47What's the matter?
00:04:48Don't you think you did good on that test today?
00:04:50I don't know.
00:04:51Well, I got $1,250 the first time, but I need at least $1,300 to get into Dover.
00:04:56So then you'll go to West State with me.
00:04:58That'd be fun.
00:04:59But my mom's really counting on me going to a fantasy school.
00:05:04Too bad Dover doesn't get football scholarships.
00:05:06Well, they don't give degrees in elementary education either.
00:05:08Yeah, well, that's what I think I want to do now.
00:05:11But who knows?
00:05:12I may change my mind before I graduate.
00:05:14Sounds like your mom talking.
00:05:16Listen, Julie.
00:05:17We're both getting old enough now that we can make up our own minds on things.
00:05:21So I'll never let anyone tell you that your dream is too big or too small or...
00:05:25Okay, and then we'll both go to West State.
00:05:28And after that, I'll teach kindergarten, and you'll be the number one draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks.
00:05:32Well, that sounds pretty good to me.
00:05:36No, no, you can't.
00:05:38That's not fair.
00:05:39No.
00:05:39Hey, Mom.
00:05:40Hey, guys.
00:05:41Hi, Mrs. Maldenauer.
00:05:42Julie, it's Nancy.
00:05:44You looking forward to the dance tonight?
00:05:46Yeah.
00:05:47Good.
00:05:47Well, have a great time.
00:05:49I'd love to stay and chat, but they just called me into work.
00:05:52Okay.
00:05:52Bye, Mom.
00:05:53Bye.
00:05:56Julie, I am so excited.
00:05:59Oh, before I forget.
00:06:02What every well-dressed man will be wearing after the prom.
00:06:08Thanks, but we won't be needing those.
00:06:10Don't tell me you're one of those.
00:06:11I'm going to wait until I'm married.
00:06:13Sandy, will you stop?
00:06:14We're going to be going out a couple of months.
00:06:16Okay, okay.
00:06:17I was just trying to be a responsible friend.
00:06:19Come on.
00:06:20Let's take a look at your dress.
00:06:21I found it in the thrift shop.
00:06:23It's so Saturday night fever.
00:06:26And don't tell me Frank's going to be wearing a white leisure suit.
00:06:29John Travolta, eat your heart out.
00:06:33Let's see your dress.
00:06:37The only used, huh?
00:06:38Believe me, I would have rather shopped at the thrift store.
00:06:41Wow.
00:06:42If you don't win homecoming queen in that.
00:06:45Do you think it's too much?
00:06:47No.
00:06:48I mean, just because Chelsea Clinton wore the same dress to her father's inauguration.
00:06:51Sandy!
00:06:52I'm just kidding.
00:06:54It's great, really.
00:06:55I mean, if you can afford something like that, why not?
00:07:03Well, right now the seating capacity is about 300, but with the new addition, we could almost
00:07:07double it.
00:07:08That'd be cool.
00:07:09Sweet.
00:07:09Well, we're not going to need those extra seats unless you guys keep winning games.
00:07:14I heard that the alumni fund needs another 20,000 just to break ground.
00:07:18Not anymore.
00:07:21Alice Software?
00:07:22To the rescue.
00:07:23That's great.
00:07:24Cheers.
00:07:25You know, it would almost be worth it to repeat senior year just to play in that stadium.
00:07:30Oh, don't worry about that.
00:07:32You're going to be playing to much bigger audiences in college.
00:07:35So what are you two boys thinking about college?
00:07:39Well, you know, the coach says a lot depends on how the season goes.
00:07:43But right now, I'm thinking of sticking close to home.
00:07:46I know I can get a full scholarship to state, but...
00:07:55Stand back, everybody.
00:08:01Give him some air.
00:08:02Here, here's some water.
00:08:05What happened?
00:08:07It was weird, man.
00:08:08I mean, one minute you're getting up off the couch to see Julie, the next...
00:08:11Bam, you're flat on your back.
00:08:13Are you okay?
00:08:14Hey, what can I say?
00:08:15You in that dress knocked me off my feet.
00:08:18You know what?
00:08:19We should really get going.
00:08:20Otherwise, we're going to be late for the dance.
00:08:21Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:08:22Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:08:23Are you sure you're okay?
00:08:24I'm fine.
00:08:25Really.
00:08:26Don't you want to relax just for a minute?
00:08:27No, I'm okay.
00:08:28I'm okay.
00:08:29You know what?
00:08:29In fact, I kind of feel like dancing, you know?
00:08:32Ow.
00:08:51Well, it looks like you recovered, huh?
00:08:53Yeah, it was nothing.
00:08:54I just got up too fast.
00:08:56Hey, Luke, Mrs. Derby's waving you over to the microphone.
00:08:58Ah, looks like it's time to do the deed.
00:09:02Save the next dance for me?
00:09:04I thought you were supposed to dance with Homecoming Queen.
00:09:07Oh, I will.
00:09:08As the student body president, it is one of my responsibilities to crown this year's Homecoming Queen.
00:09:26I know, I know, I know, I know, it's a tough job, but someone's got to do it.
00:09:30As you all know, the entire student body votes on the Homecoming Queen.
00:09:35She has all the qualities that we all admire.
00:09:39Beauty, brains, poise, personality, and service to the community.
00:09:45Now, no one knows who this year's Queen will be until the envelope is open, except Miss Derby.
00:09:51And this year's Homecoming Queen is Heather Slade.
00:10:02Will you stop?
00:10:08It's no big deal.
00:10:10Come on up, Heather.
00:10:15But, Bonnie, she's been campaigning for this since last spring.
00:10:19At least she goes after what she wants.
00:10:21May I present this year's Homecoming Queen.
00:10:51She's been guilty for this since last spring.
00:10:53We're guilt, Dr.
00:10:54Vinegar, children, and their lipstick, and other good drinks.
00:10:57She hopefully needs to ensure that you're not doing everything.
00:10:59Learning having to be done.
00:11:00No matter what you've learned.
00:11:02She almost wasted thinking.
00:11:03She got to know each other of you,
00:11:06not learning things that mean to catch her,
00:11:11she's playing the hero and finding it big.
00:11:15She has explained that she did that are not.
00:11:19I don't ever want this night to end.
00:11:45Me either.
00:11:46Are you cold?
00:11:54Take this.
00:12:01Layla, first star.
00:12:05Star light, star bright.
00:12:09What are you doing?
00:12:10I made a wish.
00:12:13What did you wish for?
00:12:14If I tell you, it might not come true.
00:12:17You can tell me.
00:12:18Nope. Those are the rules.
00:12:20Well, did it have anything to do with me?
00:12:23Maybe.
00:12:24But that's all I can say.
00:12:26Good enough.
00:12:28Close your eyes one more time.
00:12:30I got a little surprise.
00:12:31What kind of surprise?
00:12:32Just close your eyes.
00:12:33And give me a left hand.
00:12:42Perfect fit.
00:12:47Luke.
00:12:48It's a promise ring.
00:12:51It's so beautiful.
00:12:52Someday, when we're ready, I'm going to give you the real thing.
00:13:01I promise.
00:13:02So, does it feel good to have the SATs all behind you?
00:13:19Yeah.
00:13:20It should be downhill from here.
00:13:22Uphill, Julie.
00:13:24Way uphill.
00:13:26Did you hand me those clippers?
00:13:28I was thinking about applying to West State.
00:13:31They have a really good early education department.
00:13:33Julie, that should not be a priority.
00:13:35Well, it's a good school, Mom.
00:13:37And lots of kids are going there.
00:13:39Not lots of honor students.
00:13:42What does it matter where I go as long as I get a good education?
00:13:44Be honest.
00:13:48Do you want to go there because of Luke?
00:13:50Because that's where you think he's probably going?
00:13:53It's not the only reason.
00:13:54Julie, you need to be focused on your future, not his.
00:13:58What is it you have against Luke anyway?
00:14:01I have nothing against Luke.
00:14:03He's a nice boy.
00:14:05But not everybody gets to go to an Ivy League school.
00:14:08I'm not going thousands of miles away to school.
00:14:11And there's no way I'm spending four years away from Luke.
00:14:13Julie, if you and Luke were meant to be together, you will survive four years apart.
00:14:18We don't want to survive.
00:14:20We want to be happy.
00:14:21And we can't be happy unless we're together.
00:14:25Julie, when I was your age, I had a boyfriend named Sam Fisher.
00:14:30We were devastated when we had to go away to separate colleges.
00:14:34We talked to each other every day at first.
00:14:37Then once a week.
00:14:38Then once a month.
00:14:40And then I met your father.
00:14:43Yeah, well, this is different.
00:14:45Luke's not Sam Fisher.
00:14:46He's daddy.
00:14:47And I'm going to marry him.
00:14:49I don't know what happened at this dance last night, but this whole discussion is kind of crazy.
00:14:54Yeah?
00:14:54Well, you see this?
00:14:55It's a promise ring that Luke gave me.
00:14:57And it means nothing's ever going to keep us apart.
00:15:00Nothing.
00:15:09Hi, come on in.
00:15:11I'm glad we're finally meeting in person.
00:15:13Oh, me too.
00:15:14Julie's always talking about you.
00:15:16She's a great kid.
00:15:17You should be very proud.
00:15:19Oh, I am.
00:15:20But lately I'm a little worried.
00:15:22Worried about what?
00:15:24Oh, I had a tough afternoon with Julie.
00:15:26More than our typical mother-daughter bickering.
00:15:29Can I get you some coffee or iced tea?
00:15:32Oh, no, thanks.
00:15:33I'm fine.
00:15:34Does it have something to do with Luke?
00:15:38Did you know about this promise ring he gave her last night?
00:15:41Yes.
00:15:42I thought it was very sweet.
00:15:44It was.
00:15:45But I'm afraid Julie's taking it way too seriously.
00:15:49What do you mean?
00:15:50She's acting as if it's almost an engagement ring.
00:15:53Don't you think they're too young for all this?
00:15:55Oh, I don't know.
00:15:57Luke's dad was my high school sweetheart, and that turned out great.
00:16:00But you want Luke to go to college, right?
00:16:02Get his degree.
00:16:03Yeah.
00:16:05I guess I'm just not as worried about all of this as you are.
00:16:08We always talked about Julie going to college back east.
00:16:12Now she's talking about staying here.
00:16:14Because of Luke.
00:16:16Maybe she doesn't want to go back east to college.
00:16:20At 17, I don't think she knows what she wants.
00:16:23Excuse me, but are you saying you think that Luke is going to hold Julie back?
00:16:27As though he's not good enough for her?
00:16:29No, that's not what I'm saying.
00:16:30Good.
00:16:31Because I may not be as rich as you or as educated,
00:16:34but ever since Luke's dad died, I have done the best I could for him.
00:16:38And he turned out pretty damn good.
00:16:41You're totally overreacting.
00:16:43If my son wants to marry your daughter,
00:16:45I'd say she'd be lucky to have him.
00:16:51Mom, what are you doing here?
00:16:52Luke's mom and I have been meaning to get together.
00:16:58Luke isn't feeling well, so I thought I'd bring you home.
00:17:00Honey, you look flushed.
00:17:02I just need to lie down.
00:17:04I'll call you later.
00:17:05Okay.
00:17:06We were just walking, and I thought he was going to faint.
00:17:09Like last night?
00:17:10What happened last night?
00:17:12At our house, before the dance.
00:17:13Luke blacked out for a couple of seconds.
00:17:16I can't believe he didn't tell me.
00:17:17I better call the doctor.
00:17:22I'm sorry I missed you at school.
00:17:25I got hung up at the doctors.
00:17:26So what do you say?
00:17:27Is everything all right?
00:17:29You know how I've been feeling real tired lately.
00:17:32I thought I had mono or something,
00:17:34but they did the tests and...
00:17:36So you're fine?
00:17:38No.
00:17:39Something's wrong.
00:17:40They just...
00:17:40They don't know what it is.
00:17:43I have to go to Seattle tomorrow and see a specialist.
00:17:45Well, what kind of specialist?
00:17:48Um...
00:17:49An oncologist.
00:17:52Know what they treat?
00:17:53No.
00:17:55Cancer.
00:17:56Believe that.
00:17:57They think I may have cancer.
00:17:59But you just said they didn't know.
00:18:01They must know something.
00:18:02Otherwise, why would they be sending me there?
00:18:03Just to be sure.
00:18:05It's probably no big deal.
00:18:06I mean, how could you have cancer?
00:18:08I know.
00:18:10You probably just have some kind of virus.
00:18:12Yeah.
00:18:13Come here.
00:18:15You worry too much.
00:18:19I know.
00:18:19No.
00:18:31No.
00:18:31No, I really think we should avoid going to trial on this one.
00:18:35Okay.
00:18:36No, that's fair.
00:18:38Why don't you sleep on it and call me in the morning?
00:18:40I'll be in my office all day tomorrow.
00:18:41I'll tell you.
00:18:43Bye.
00:18:46How are you doing home so early?
00:18:48Oh, your father and I have a benefit tonight.
00:18:53What's the matter, honey?
00:18:55I'm just upset.
00:18:56Listen, I feel terrible about our fight yesterday.
00:18:59I'm sorry.
00:19:00It's not you.
00:19:01It's Luke.
00:19:03What about Luke?
00:19:03They think he may be really sick.
00:19:07Did he see the doctor?
00:19:10They don't know what's wrong with him.
00:19:12He has to go to Seattle tomorrow to see a specialist.
00:19:15A cancer doctor.
00:19:17Well, I'm sure it's just a precaution.
00:19:20Do you think so?
00:19:21I mean, why would they be sending him if they weren't really concerned?
00:19:24Just to make sure that he's okay.
00:19:28Don't worry.
00:19:30How's Luke taking all this?
00:19:31I think he's really scared.
00:19:33Well, of course.
00:19:35But, Julie, don't expect the worst here.
00:19:38Chances are it's...
00:19:39I know.
00:19:40I just really want to be there tomorrow when he finishes up the testing.
00:19:44Don't you have finals coming up?
00:19:47I mean, you'd miss a whole day of classes.
00:19:49I can make it up.
00:19:50Please, Mom.
00:19:51I really need to do this.
00:19:53Please.
00:19:56Okay.
00:19:58Thanks.
00:20:01We'll do the biopsy under local anesthesia.
00:20:09We'll feel a thing.
00:20:11What exactly are you looking for?
00:20:13We're looking to rule out the presence of cancer cells.
00:20:15You tell me what's going on, right?
00:20:17I mean, no matter what happens, promise you'll give it to me straight.
00:20:20I promise.
00:20:22Mrs. Maldenhauer, you'll need to sign Luke in here.
00:20:25And Luke, he'll be coming with me.
00:20:26Good luck, baby.
00:20:32Mom, would you stop worrying?
00:20:34You're going to make me nervous.
00:20:35I'm sorry.
00:20:36Hey, did we hear from Julie?
00:20:38She'll be here before you're finished.
00:20:40Good.
00:20:42Ready?
00:20:42You sure you don't want one?
00:21:01I'm too nervous to drink anything.
00:21:06Hello?
00:21:06It's Dr. Sanchez.
00:21:07Yes, doctor.
00:21:08Did everything go okay?
00:21:09Well, why don't you go up to this room and I'll meet you?
00:21:12We'll be right.
00:21:16That was, uh, Dr. Sanchez.
00:21:18She wants us to meet her up in Luke's room.
00:21:20Did she say anything else?
00:21:23Are you sure?
00:21:24Some kind of upset.
00:21:25Wasn't what she said.
00:21:29It's what she didn't say.
00:21:31What do you mean?
00:21:32The last time I got a call like that was when Luke's dad had a heart attack.
00:21:35Luke, I was waiting in a room just like this.
00:21:40And the emergency room doctor came in to talk to me.
00:21:44It wasn't good news.
00:21:46This isn't like that.
00:21:48Luke's young and healthy.
00:21:49Whatever they find, they'll be able to treat.
00:21:52He'll be okay.
00:21:53We have to believe that.
00:21:55How come you're the one acting like an adult here?
00:22:03No matter what, we have to be strong for Luke.
00:22:05Hi.
00:22:14Hey, yourself.
00:22:15So, how was it?
00:22:17I feel like a pin cushion.
00:22:19You poor baby.
00:22:20Can we go home now?
00:22:21Dr. Sanchez is on her way up to talk to us.
00:22:23Thanks for hanging with Mom.
00:22:27No problem.
00:22:31That's a pretty grim face, Doc.
00:22:34I'm afraid I do have some bad news for you, Luke.
00:22:37You have non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
00:22:40It's a form of cancer that affects the limb system.
00:22:43What?
00:22:44This kind of lymphoma is rare, but when we do see it, it's usually in young people.
00:22:48But it's curable, right?
00:22:49Right now, Luke is in an early stage, so his prognosis is pretty good.
00:22:54Thank God.
00:22:56You see?
00:22:56He'll be okay.
00:22:59So, what do we do now?
00:23:00How do we fix it?
00:23:01I'll be admitting you upstairs, and we'll begin an eight-week course of chemotherapy.
00:23:04Eight weeks?
00:23:05That means I'll be here for the rest of the football season.
00:23:08Depends on how well you tolerate the drugs.
00:23:10Well, isn't chemo that stuff that makes you puke and all your hair fall out?
00:23:13Luke, if it'll get rid of the cancer...
00:23:14Will it get rid of the cancer?
00:23:15Will it?
00:23:16Or am I going to have to deal with this for the rest of my life?
00:23:18I can't answer that, Luke.
00:23:20Yeah, well, maybe I don't want to go through with it.
00:23:22Maybe I just want to pack up and go home and play the odds.
00:23:24Luke, what are you doing?
00:23:25I can't handle this.
00:23:26Luke!
00:23:26Please.
00:23:27Luke, I know this is a shock and it's very upsetting.
00:23:30Yeah, that's an understatement.
00:23:31But you asked me to be straight with you.
00:23:33And you have to understand that the odds of beating this are only good with treatment.
00:23:37There is no miracle cure.
00:23:38This is a very serious disease.
00:23:40And without chemotherapy, you will die.
00:23:48Hey, honey, how'd it go?
00:24:01Not good.
00:24:02What did they find?
00:24:05Cancer.
00:24:06Luke's got cancer.
00:24:07Oh, no.
00:24:08They said he might be okay, but there are no guarantees.
00:24:13He might die, mommy.
00:24:15Oh, honey.
00:24:18He'll be all right.
00:24:19I got my SAT scores back.
00:24:30How'd you do?
00:24:311330.
00:24:33Wow.
00:24:33That's great.
00:24:35Mother must be happy.
00:24:37Very.
00:24:39So what are you thinking now, you know, about college?
00:24:41Ugh, let's not even talk about that, okay?
00:24:44Okay.
00:24:47So what's everybody saying about me back at school?
00:24:49Oh, people just ask how you're doing when you're coming back.
00:24:53Especially when you're coming back.
00:24:55And if you're going to play again this year.
00:24:56What, everybody's blaming me because the team's last three in a row?
00:24:59Nobody's blaming you.
00:25:01It's just shows how good you were.
00:25:04I am, Julie.
00:25:05Don't say were.
00:25:06I'm sorry.
00:25:07You know I didn't mean it that way.
00:25:09Yeah, well, you just tell everybody I'm coming back.
00:25:11Hopefully in time for the playoffs.
00:25:13Well, what does Dr. Sanchez think?
00:25:15She thinks the chemo's going good.
00:25:17I took this CT scan.
00:25:19Wow, was that a trip.
00:25:21I had to lie perfectly still and they x-rayed my entire body.
00:25:24Does it hurt?
00:25:25No, but, you know, besides looking like a cue ball,
00:25:28there was another terrible side effect.
00:25:31Well, what?
00:25:32Well, now when I go to bed at night,
00:25:34I glow in the dark.
00:25:36Luke!
00:25:37How'd you go in there a second?
00:25:39Did not.
00:25:39Thanks for coming out.
00:25:42Well, thanks for having me.
00:25:54Okay, Jules.
00:25:55I think we're ready for the angel now.
00:26:00Julie, the angel.
00:26:01I can fix it.
00:26:09Look, here's a big piece
00:26:10and we'll just put it back together
00:26:11and it'll be just as good as new.
00:26:14Just leave it.
00:26:16It's all right.
00:26:22Julie, honey,
00:26:23we're not worried about the ornament.
00:26:25We're worried about you.
00:26:26It's just...
00:26:28It's really hard being in the Christmas spirit
00:26:30with what Luke's going through.
00:26:31We know that, honey.
00:26:32But, Julie, where are you going?
00:26:35I just want to be alone, okay?
00:26:39Let me talk to her.
00:26:40This is really getting out of hand.
00:26:41No.
00:26:42No.
00:26:43Just let her be for a while.
00:26:44No.
00:26:56Can we talk?
00:26:57What?
00:26:59We need to talk.
00:27:01Mom, I really don't feel like talking.
00:27:05Well, that's part of the problem.
00:27:07You don't feel like doing much of anything anymore.
00:27:09Okay, so I'm upset about Luke.
00:27:11We know you are, honey, but...
00:27:13It's just so tough this time of year, you know?
00:27:16And the hospital's so depressing.
00:27:19Well, then I have an idea.
00:27:21Why don't we invite Luke and his mom
00:27:23to join us for Christmas dinner?
00:27:24Thanks.
00:27:26But Luke's still doing chemo.
00:27:27And the doctor wants to keep him in the hospital
00:27:29a few more weeks.
00:27:30Oh.
00:27:31That's why I was kind of hoping
00:27:32maybe I could spend Christmas day with Luke
00:27:34in the hospital.
00:27:35But, honey, Grandpa and Grandma
00:27:36and everybody's coming here.
00:27:38But, Mom, I really want to be with Luke.
00:27:41Well, Julie, it's Christmas.
00:27:44You should be with your family.
00:27:45Luke and Nancy are family.
00:27:48Do you think you're being a little bit selfish here?
00:27:50Why?
00:27:51Because I want to spend Christmas with Luke?
00:27:53I don't see anything selfish about that.
00:27:56All right.
00:27:59If you want to see Luke at Christmas, that's fine.
00:28:02But you're going to spend some time
00:28:03with your real family first, okay?
00:28:05Okay.
00:28:19I'm sorry.
00:28:20I'm so late.
00:28:21Oh, traffic was unbelievable.
00:28:23We were starting to get worried.
00:28:25Merry Christmas, honey.
00:28:26Merry Christmas.
00:28:27Merry Christmas.
00:28:30Oh, my mom packed some really neat stuff.
00:28:33Some turkey and dressing and some mince pie.
00:28:37Mmm, she shouldn't have.
00:28:39Yeah, right.
00:28:40Food in here is great.
00:28:41Same kid or does a dog shelter around the corner.
00:28:43Luke.
00:28:44It's Christmas, okay?
00:28:46I'm just telling it like it is.
00:28:48Any mistletoe in there?
00:28:49Yeah, who needs mistletoe?
00:28:50Mmm.
00:28:52All right, break it up, you two.
00:28:55Julie, this is my cousin Steve from Vancouver.
00:28:57Oh, hi.
00:28:58Luke talks about you all the time.
00:29:00And vice versa.
00:29:01So, his fiancée Tracy was supposed to come,
00:29:03but she got the flu.
00:29:04Oh, that's too bad.
00:29:06That's okay.
00:29:07You'll get to meet her when you and Luke come up to visit.
00:29:09And when's that?
00:29:11Spring break.
00:29:12It's all been arranged.
00:29:14Thanks for telling me.
00:29:15It's one of your Christmas presents.
00:29:17Hey, speaking of Christmas presents.
00:29:20There you are.
00:29:21I thought it might be a few weeks for that mop of yours to grow back, so...
00:29:25It's something a little hipper than a baseball cap.
00:29:32What do you think, huh?
00:29:34How do I look?
00:29:36It's a lot better than when you had here, right?
00:29:37I always did have a sick sense of humor.
00:29:40Well, it's time for a toast.
00:29:43Luke?
00:29:45You want to do the honors?
00:29:47No, you do it.
00:29:50Luke.
00:29:53What?
00:29:55I just don't want to.
00:29:57Come on, Luke.
00:29:58Don't be a party pooper.
00:29:59Come on, Luke.
00:30:07Do you know that I woke up this morning feeling sorry for myself?
00:30:14The thought of spending Christmas day in a hospital, dealing with all of this crap,
00:30:19having everybody that I care about see me like this?
00:30:22Now I feel I'm having one of the best Christmases ever because of you guys.
00:30:36Hopefully not my last.
00:30:40So you want a toast?
00:30:41I love you all, and with God's help, we will be together next year.
00:30:53Cheers.
00:30:56Cheers.
00:30:58Cheers.
00:30:59Okay, guys.
00:31:20That's it.
00:31:21Thanks for being so good for me.
00:31:25Come on, Julie.
00:31:26We got to go.
00:31:27We got to run out.
00:31:30Aubrey, see you guys next week.
00:31:36Come on.
00:31:37Aubrey, you ready?
00:31:38One, two, three, go.
00:31:43So how's Luke doing?
00:31:45Much better.
00:31:46When's he coming back to school?
00:31:47Uh, maybe next week.
00:31:49Really?
00:31:50Well, if he's all done with Kina.
00:31:51Oh, that's great.
00:31:53Is he nervous?
00:31:54Not half as bad as I am.
00:31:56Why?
00:31:57Oh, I don't know.
00:31:58I just hope everybody doesn't get weird around him.
00:32:02Do you think he'll be up to Heather's party on Friday night?
00:32:04I doubt that.
00:32:05How about you?
00:32:06What do you mean?
00:32:07Well, you can't just sit at home.
00:32:09It's going to be a great party.
00:32:11Heather's got a ska band and everything.
00:32:13Well, I can't go without Luke.
00:32:14Are you sure that's a good idea, Jules?
00:32:18I mean, this is our senior year.
00:32:21You can't just sit at home waiting for Luke to get better.
00:32:23You're going to miss out on a lot of fun.
00:32:25You sound like my parents.
00:32:26Look, Julie, I'm just trying to tell you exactly...
00:32:28I know.
00:32:29I know.
00:32:29I'm sorry.
00:32:30I didn't mean it to sound that way.
00:32:31Okay?
00:32:33I'll call you later.
00:32:35Okay.
00:32:35You heard the news?
00:32:49I just saw Dr. Sanchez.
00:32:51I can go home.
00:32:53She thinks I've licked it.
00:32:54Is that what she said?
00:32:55Well, the cancer's in remission and there are no guarantees,
00:32:57but she even thinks I can start working out.
00:32:59Can you believe it?
00:33:01I had this dream the other night that I was playing football.
00:33:03Now it can really happen.
00:33:04Luke, you should be so proud of yourself.
00:33:06Believe me, I could have never done it without you.
00:33:08Never.
00:33:11Come here.
00:33:14Let's get back.
00:33:15Okay.
00:33:16Go home.
00:33:20Hey, buddy.
00:33:23Hey, what's up?
00:33:24Not much.
00:33:24Welcome back, man.
00:33:25Thanks.
00:33:27Outside the new hairdo, you don't look too bad.
00:33:29I don't make shampooing easy.
00:33:31Hey.
00:33:31Hey, Billy.
00:33:33So I guess I can assume that everybody knows about me coming back?
00:33:38Well.
00:33:38Mr. Stevenson made an announcement over the intercom.
00:33:40Oh, great.
00:33:42Just what I wanted.
00:33:44Now everybody's going to be looking at me like I got two heads or something.
00:33:46Yeah, it's all good.
00:33:50You know what?
00:33:54Let's go on the side, though.
00:33:55You know, we can't.
00:33:58Why?
00:33:59Well, because of this.
00:34:01I am going to kill you, guys.
00:34:07I am going to kill you, guys.
00:34:07Well, hi, sweetheart.
00:34:32Hi.
00:34:33How did the day go?
00:34:35Really good.
00:34:36Everybody was so nice to Luke.
00:34:38He said he hated all the attention, but I think you really liked it.
00:34:41Well, that's great.
00:34:45Julie.
00:34:46What?
00:34:47It's from Dover.
00:34:49So open it.
00:35:00You're in.
00:35:03Oh, congratulations, honey.
00:35:05Oh, you worked so hard.
00:35:08You deserve it.
00:35:09Thanks.
00:35:10I'm going to go call your father.
00:35:12He is going to be so excited.
00:35:13Not bad, Luke.
00:35:23Not bad, Luke.
00:35:25Not bad at all.
00:35:26It's like riding a bike.
00:35:28Once you learn, you never forget.
00:35:34Ladies, what do you think?
00:35:36Oh, very nice.
00:35:37See you're back a week and you're already starting a fad.
00:35:39Yeah, just what I wanted to be, a fashion leader.
00:35:42I think everyone should wear one of the Easter Day Awards thing on Friday.
00:35:45What do you think?
00:35:46Yeah, that's cool.
00:35:47Hey, well, count me out because I'm not going.
00:35:49Come on, Luke.
00:35:49Man, the whole team's going to be there.
00:35:51I'm not part of the team anymore, remember?
00:35:53Luke, Frank was just trying to be...
00:35:54I know, I know.
00:35:55Look, I got to go to the library.
00:35:57I'll see you guys later.
00:35:58Man, I was just...
00:35:59Luke.
00:36:01Luke.
00:36:02Look, I just need my space, all right?
00:36:03Why are you being so sensitive about everything?
00:36:06You just don't get it, do you?
00:36:08Well, then try explaining it to me.
00:36:10Once upon a time, I was this very normal guy.
00:36:13Now everybody feels sorry for me.
00:36:14That's not true.
00:36:16Yes, it is, and I don't like it.
00:36:17And if I go to this award ceremony, everybody's going to make a big deal.
00:36:21Yeah, they were going to make a big deal, but they don't feel sorry for you.
00:36:24They were just trying to do something special, and if you don't show up on Friday night,
00:36:27you're going to hurt a lot of people who care about you.
00:36:30Especially me.
00:36:30And the Most Improved Player Award goes to Kevin Lee.
00:36:46Kevin's also a leading candidate for the Most Bizarre Hairdo Award.
00:36:51Congratulations.
00:36:52Okay, now I know you're all real anxious to get back to class,
00:36:55so here to present the MVP award is the team's co-captain, Frank Orton.
00:37:01Frank, come on up.
00:37:06Thanks, Joe.
00:37:07I became acting team captain when our real captain, Luke Maldenhauer, got sick.
00:37:14And let me tell you, Luke's aren't easy cleats to fill.
00:37:17Now, as we all know, up until Luke got sick, we were undefeated, thinking city, maybe even state championship.
00:37:25But when you lose a player like Luke Maldenhauer, you lose more than a great quarterback.
00:37:30You lose a true leader.
00:37:31Now, I'm proud of the fact that we stayed competitive, but without our main man in the lineup,
00:37:35we just couldn't make it to the next level.
00:37:37But you're out there playing a much bigger game, buddy.
00:37:40And you showed us all what it means to be a true champion.
00:37:43So, on behalf of everyone involved in Collins football,
00:37:47I'm honored to present you with this year's Most Valuable Player Award.
00:37:51Let's go, Luke!
00:37:52Thank you!
00:38:12Hey, coach, I'm also a candidate for the Most Bizarre Hairdew Award, too.
00:38:21You know, when I first heard about this award ceremony, I didn't want to come.
00:38:26I didn't take the team to state.
00:38:29And I didn't think I deserved an award just for being sick.
00:38:33But somebody smarter than me pointed out that this award isn't just for me.
00:38:38It's for all of us.
00:38:39We've all had a tough year.
00:38:42But that's behind us now, and things are starting to look better.
00:38:45Next year, we're going to have a new addition to the stadium,
00:38:48and a team that can go all the way.
00:38:51So I'll accept this award on your behalf.
00:38:55And thank you all for believing in me when...
00:38:59I sometimes didn't believe in myself.
00:39:07Come on.
00:39:23Where are we going?
00:39:24Yeah, you'll see.
00:39:28Ta-da!
00:39:29Recognize this tree?
00:39:31I don't think so.
00:39:33This is where I first fell in love with you.
00:39:36Although you barely knew I was alive.
00:39:37I used to play hide-and-seek around here.
00:39:45I know.
00:39:46I used to watch it.
00:39:48You were the first girl I ever had a crush on.
00:39:50You're making this up.
00:39:52I'm not.
00:39:53Cross my heart.
00:39:54Well, then how come you never told me before?
00:39:57Just waiting for the right time.
00:39:59Twelve years later?
00:40:01Yeah.
00:40:03I remember.
00:40:04It was May 25th, 1987, at exactly 3.27 p.m.
00:40:11You leaned your head against a tree,
00:40:14and when you started counting, the sunlight caught your hair,
00:40:18and it sparkled.
00:40:19I just stood and stared.
00:40:21Then you lifted your head,
00:40:23and I saw your face.
00:40:25Because I knew I'd always love you.
00:40:30You're such a liar.
00:40:32Yeah?
00:40:32Yeah.
00:40:40I do love you.
00:40:42I love you, too.
00:40:44You just got a great idea.
00:40:46You want to do something wild and crazy?
00:40:48Like what?
00:40:49Come on.
00:40:50Our parents will kill us, but we have to do this.
00:40:53We have to.
00:40:55Is Julie home?
00:40:57No, I haven't seen her.
00:41:00Julie?
00:41:02Julie, are you up there?

00:41:22Julie's gone.
00:41:24What do you mean gone?
00:41:25She ran off with Luke.
00:41:28Ran off?
00:41:31She's gone.
00:41:35I can't believe she did this.
00:41:37What the hell was she thinking?
00:41:39Are you sure your cousin Steve's okay with this?
00:41:52Positive.
00:41:53Check these out.
00:41:54Hey, let's get our picture in front of these.

00:42:04Just click right there.
00:42:07I can show this to the FBI.
00:42:08That way I can prove I didn't kidnap you.
00:42:10You better develop it fast.

00:43:03Oh, Luke said he was going to stop at a friend's on the way up.
00:43:06I am so sorry about this.
00:43:08I just assumed you knew.
00:43:09How could we have known?
00:43:11We were planning a trip to San Francisco for spring break with Julie.
00:43:14I just never crossed my mind to ask.
00:43:18I am really sorry.
00:43:20Look, Nancy, it's not your fault.
00:43:22It's just so unlike Julie to do something like this.
00:43:28Let's hope this is them.
00:43:30Hello?
00:43:33Thank God.
00:43:35It's Steve. They just arrived.
00:43:37Let me talk to Julie.
00:43:38Would you put Julie on, please? Her parents are here.
00:43:42Julie?
00:43:43Julie?
00:43:44Do you have any idea how worried we've been?
00:43:48I'm sorry.
00:43:49It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing, and we're fine.
00:43:52Well, your father and I aren't fine.
00:43:55This is outrageous, Julie.
00:43:57You're 17 years old, and you just take off for another country, for God's sake?
00:44:01Let me speak to her.
00:44:05Julie, listen to me.
00:44:06I want you and Luke pulling in our driveway by 5 o'clock this evening, or I'm going to come up there and get you myself.
00:44:14No.
00:44:15I'm sorry if I've upset everybody, but we're staying until the end of the week.
00:44:20What are you saying?
00:44:21If you come up here to get me, we'll leave.
00:44:23Okay, but I want you to call us every day. Do you understand me? Every day.
00:44:29I'll tell Steve I'll call him back in 10 minutes.
00:44:32Okay.
00:44:33All right. Bye.
00:44:36She said if I came up there to get her, they'd leave.
00:44:39Leave? To where?
00:44:41Well, that's the problem.
00:44:43I am going to kill Luke.
00:44:44So that's it?
00:44:45She's staying, and to hell with us?
00:44:48Well, at least we know where they are, and they promise, they promise they check in every day.
00:44:52And Steve is very responsible. He's not going to let them do anything stupid.
00:44:56I'm sorry.
00:44:58I just, I still can't believe this is really happening.
00:45:01You're in trouble now. Now I can do this.
00:45:19Julie!
00:45:20What are you doing?
00:45:21Just listen, just listen.
00:45:23Julie!
00:45:24Julie!
00:45:29That is so neat.
00:45:31Yeah.
00:45:32Luke!
00:45:33Luke!
00:45:36Luke and Julie forever!
00:45:38Julie forever!
00:45:52You think it was worth coming here?
00:45:54Ask me this time next week.
00:45:56Come on, catch me if you can.
00:46:02Hey!
00:46:03Hold on a second.
00:46:04Still a really sick guy, remember?
00:46:06Come on.
00:46:07What?
00:46:08You okay?
00:46:09Yeah.
00:46:09Here we go.
00:46:10Look at that water, how clear it is.
00:46:11It's so great.
00:46:12I know.
00:46:13It's amazing.
00:46:15Oh, yeah.
00:46:15It's amazing.
00:46:16It's great.
00:46:16I bet some of these trees are a thousand years old.
00:46:21Millions.
00:46:24I don't think I want to live to be a million.
00:46:25A hundred and eighty-five sounds good to me.
00:46:29Yeah.
00:46:31Do you believe in heaven?
00:46:33Sure.
00:46:34And I believe everybody will meet up again someday.
00:46:37Like us?
00:46:39Like us.
00:46:40Do you think that if you die young, you stay young forever?
00:46:46Don't say that.
00:46:48There's something I think about.
00:46:50Well, you don't have to because you're not going to die young.
00:46:52We're going to celebrate our golden anniversary here and have lots of grandchildren.
00:46:55From your mouth to God's ear.
00:47:01Luke, what is it?
00:47:03Is there something you haven't told me?
00:47:06No, it's just I hate going in for all these tests all the time.
00:47:10I'm always afraid that they're going to find something new.
00:47:12But you feel good, right?
00:47:13I feel great.
00:47:15Especially being here with you.
00:47:16So, what do you say?
00:47:26You mean?
00:47:29Right here.
00:47:30We love each other.
00:47:31And that's what's important.
00:47:33And where are we going to have a more romantic setting?
00:47:36Well, what if someone saw us?
00:47:37There's no one around.
00:47:39Because there may be a bear or two and they're really not peeping Toms.
00:47:44But I don't want to, P-Town.
00:47:46What are you, crazy?
00:48:16Here she comes.
00:48:21Remember, let's just try our best to stay calm.
00:48:31Hi.
00:48:33Julie.
00:48:35I'm sorry, okay?
00:48:37I'm sorry that I upset you.
00:48:40Upset?
00:48:40Upset is only half of it.
00:48:44We're really disappointed in you, Julie.
00:48:46Incredibly disappointed.
00:48:48I know.
00:48:49Can I go upstairs?
00:48:50I'm really tired.
00:48:53Okay.
00:48:55But this is not the end of it.
00:48:57You still have a lot of explaining to do.
00:48:59But this is not the end of it.
00:49:02Okay.
00:49:02I'm sorry.
00:49:03Okay.
00:49:04Okay.
00:49:14Okay.
00:49:14Why did you have to sneak away?
00:49:37Why couldn't you just have asked?
00:49:39Because you would have said no.
00:49:41And then we would have gotten into a big fight.
00:49:43I don't want to hear it.
00:49:44Do you even acknowledge that what you did was wrong?
00:49:51The way I left was wrong.
00:49:53But I had the happiest week of my life.
00:49:55And I'm not sorry about that.
00:49:58Well, I had one of the worst weeks of mine.
00:50:04Believe it or not, I was 17 years old once.
00:50:08And I know all about rebellion and being in love.
00:50:12And it is not an excuse to hurt your father and I.
00:50:24I just pray you didn't do anything really foolish.
00:50:26All right, boys, that's it.
00:50:44Time to hit the showers.
00:50:45Let's go.
00:50:46Come on, coach.
00:50:47Five more minutes.
00:50:48I'm just getting my rhythm back.
00:50:49Calm up, would you, coach?
00:50:50He's tougher on himself than you were.
00:50:52Hey, Frank, you want to bring that double in for me, please?
00:50:57Good thing, coach.
00:50:58Talk to me.
00:51:02Now, you're not pushing yourself too hard, are you?
00:51:05Heck no.
00:51:05I feel great.
00:51:06And the doctor even says the cancer is officially in remission.
00:51:09No point in babying myself.
00:51:11Well, that's great news, Luke.
00:51:12Great news.
00:51:14Listen, you remember that scout from West State who's so high on you?
00:51:17Yeah.
00:51:18Well, he called me the other day.
00:51:21And I told him about your situation.
00:51:23And he's still interested.
00:51:24What do you mean, interested?
00:51:26You could still get a full scholarship.
00:51:28Did he say that?
00:51:29Well, I'm sure you're going to have to pass a pretty strenuous physical.
00:51:32But he wants to come down and check you out.
00:51:35When?
00:51:35Next week.
00:51:36We'll put on an intra-squad game.
00:51:38Think you're up to it?
00:51:39Yes, sir.
00:51:39You bet I am.
00:51:42Ready, break.
00:51:49Five, three, four.
00:52:02The scout's going to talk to him.
00:52:12Oh, he's going to be so impressed.
00:52:14Luke was amazing.
00:52:15Luke's so excited.
00:52:17He hasn't been able to sleep.
00:52:24They're both smiling.
00:52:26That's a good sign.
00:52:28Yeah.
00:52:29Good job.
00:52:32I got it.
00:52:35I got the scholarship.
00:52:36Yes, yes.

00:59:27when you're not here somebody has to take up the slack
00:59:30i can't bring in a temp a day here a day there
00:59:33what's the other part
00:59:35your son's medical bills are killing us
00:59:39our insurance costs are going through the roof and now you're telling me
00:59:42he's got another illness
00:59:43what are you saying
00:59:44that we got a big problem
00:59:46you're gonna fire me
00:59:47i'd like to think we could work something out
00:59:50you know
00:59:51a little severance package
00:59:53a little severance package
00:59:54i have worked my ass off for this company for almost 10 years and i've never asked for a damn thing
01:00:00and now on the day when i find out my son could be really sick again
01:00:04you have the nerve to threaten me because your insurance costs are going up
01:00:07no
01:00:08what are you gonna tell everybody
01:00:09my job was downsized
01:00:11nancy

01:00:49thanks
01:00:50well can i get you anything a drink
01:00:53no thanks i'm fine
01:00:55like i said
01:00:58if there's anything we can do
01:01:01well
01:01:02if you know of any jobs
01:01:05i don't have a lot of skills but i'm a hard worker
01:01:08what happened to your job at baylor gloves
01:01:10on top of everything else they told me today that they were gonna lay me off
01:01:14why
01:01:16oh at first they said it was because i was missing too many days of work
01:01:19and the real reason came out
01:01:22luke's illness is driving up the cost of their insurance premiums
01:01:27without health insurance i don't know what i'll do
01:01:28all his treatments cost a fortune
01:01:31nancy what exactly did they say to you
01:01:34if i resign they will work out a severance package
01:01:40i can tell you right now it won't be much
01:01:43this is outrageous
01:01:44i know for a fact that baylor gloves had a terrific year
01:01:47until luke got sick i never missed a day of work
01:01:50and i got top performance reviews
01:01:53hold on a second
01:01:56i need you to tell me everything that was said
01:02:08and who said it
01:02:10why
01:02:11because i'm a lawyer
01:02:13and you're getting screwed
01:02:15and it isn't right
01:02:16the new tests we ran showed there are cancer cells in your bone marrow
01:02:25that's bad huh
01:02:26definitely a setback
01:02:28where do we go from here
01:02:31we immediately start looking for a compatible donor
01:02:34where
01:02:35everywhere
01:02:35so the big problem is luke doesn't have a real common blood type
01:02:39so straight up doc
01:02:41what are my chances
01:02:43with a successful transplant
01:02:4750 50 it'll go into remission
01:02:49without a transplant
01:02:52there's no chance of survival
01:02:55what happens until we find a donor
01:03:00we start chemo again to inhibit the spread as much as possible
01:03:04luke
01:03:05i am so sorry
01:03:08if i could do anything else
01:03:11yeah

01:11:23a possible wrongful termination suit
01:11:25i don't think you have all the facts here
01:11:28nancy is under the impression
01:11:30that she's being forced to resign
01:11:32nancy's also been away from work all week
01:11:35her son may be dying mr baylor
01:11:38i think that's an explainable absence
01:11:40look mrs ellis
01:11:42your husband owns a business
01:11:43sometimes you have to make tough decisions
01:11:46my husband
01:11:47would be the first to tell you that there is more to life than the bottom line
01:11:51this is a terrible decision
01:11:53which i really think you should reconsider
01:11:56is that some kind of threat
01:11:57in case you don't know
01:11:59there's a new federal law
01:12:00the family and medical leave act
01:12:02which protects the rights of parents like nancy moldenhauer
01:12:06i am fully prepared
01:12:08to make sure that law is enforced
01:12:10i am also prepared
01:12:13to let the media know
01:12:15that you were threatening to fire
01:12:16luke moldenhauer's mother
01:12:17while he is fighting for his life
01:12:20now and just
01:12:21just hold on a second will you

01:13:06maybe we could get married
01:13:08what
01:13:10it doesn't have to be a fancy ceremony
01:13:12we can do it here in the hospital
01:13:14your mother
01:13:15my parents
01:13:16sandy

01:13:20and no it's not white
01:13:22but it doesn't matter
01:13:23and then after you get out of the hospital

01:13:45let's just wait until after the surgery okay
01:13:49besides if we don't marry right now
01:13:54our mothers would kill us
01:13:55then the surgery would have been for nothing

01:15:46i'll see you in a few hours
01:16:16you
01:16:46I can't tell you how much it means to me
01:17:12that so many of you came out today to pay your love and respect to Luke.
01:17:21Ironically, one of Luke's favorite poems was
01:17:23To an Athlete Dying Young by A.E. Houseman.
01:17:28I'd like to share it with you.
01:17:31The time you won your town, the race,
01:17:35we chaired you through the marketplace.
01:17:37Once, man and boy, stood cheering by
01:17:41At home we brought you, shoulder high.
01:17:46Today, the road all runners come.
01:17:52Shoulder high we bring you home
01:17:54And set you at your threshold down
01:17:58Townsman of a stiller town
01:18:03Come on.
01:18:26Oh, my God.
01:18:57You were really wonderful.
01:18:59I don't know how you kept it together.
01:19:03It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do.
01:19:06It's starting to rain.
01:19:10I remember when I was a little girl,
01:19:13I thought when it rained,
01:19:16that meant God was crying.
01:19:19Now I know that's not true.
01:19:22I mean, why would God be crying?
01:19:25He's got liquid.
01:19:29You're right, honey.
01:19:31We have to believe Luke's in a better place.
01:19:33Thank you so much for everything.
01:19:44You don't be a stranger, you hear?
01:19:46No.
01:19:47Julie, are you going to school today?
01:19:52No.
01:19:52Julie, are you going to school today?
01:20:18No.
01:20:20Honey, it's been a week.
01:20:21Luke, don't you think you'd feel better if you got back into a routine?
01:20:26No.
01:20:28Is there anything I can get you?
01:20:31I want Luke.
01:20:33Honey, please.
01:20:39Julie, you've got to stop doing this.
01:20:42I'm fine.
01:20:43You're not fine.
01:20:45You don't eat, you don't go to school, you don't even see your friends.
01:20:49Your father's right.
01:20:51You have to snap out of this.
01:20:54I will, okay?
01:20:58Honey, we know that you miss Luke, but you can't keep punishing yourself.
01:21:04I'm sorry, I've got to go.
01:21:12Be okay.
01:21:13Okay.
01:21:13Come on, Julie, I want you to get dressed.
01:21:28Why?
01:21:29Because you need to get out of the house.
01:21:31Then go where?
01:21:32Just get dressed, okay?
01:21:38Sandy called again last night.
01:21:39She wants to come by after school.
01:21:41I'll call her, I promise.
01:21:44I just...
01:21:45What is it, honey?
01:21:47I've just been so alone.
01:21:50It's so empty.
01:21:53Luke and I used to come here all the time.
01:21:55Julie, nobody can tell you that they know what you're going through.
01:22:04But I remember how I felt when my mother died.
01:22:08I was only 14 years old.
01:22:11And there was really nobody to share it with.
01:22:14There were days when I thought I would just up and die.
01:22:19That's how I feel.
01:22:21I know.
01:22:23But sooner or later, you're going to have to go on with your life.
01:22:32That's what Luke would have wanted.
01:22:34He would want you to be happy.
01:22:37So how can I be happy without him?
01:22:39Because someday, when you least expect it, you're going to fall in love again.
01:22:46I'll never love anybody the way that I loved Luke.
01:22:50Maybe.
01:22:51Maybe not.
01:22:53But you're going to have to try.
01:22:56Because life is full of risks.
01:22:59Just like Luke's surgery.
01:23:02Luke didn't have a choice.
01:23:04Yes, he did.
01:23:06Nancy told me that they found a bone marrow donor just before Luke collapsed.
01:23:11Well, why didn't he have a transplant?
01:23:13But apparently, the transplant had a better chance of working with the tumor gone.
01:23:19So Luke took the risk.
01:23:22And he had the surgery.
01:23:24Why didn't he tell me?
01:23:26Because he didn't want you to worry.
01:23:28And now you have to pay him back.
01:23:31By being strong enough to get on with your life.
01:23:34I don't care.
01:23:35The same as the rest of us.
01:23:41One day at a time.
01:23:45Okay.
01:23:45Okay.
01:23:45Thank you, Mr. Mayor.
01:23:54On behalf of the entire student body, we'd like to thank you for taking part in today's important dedication.
01:24:01There's someone I'd like to bring on stage.
01:24:04Julie Ellis.
01:24:05Julie?
01:24:05When I was first asked to speak here today, I said no.
01:24:23Because I was afraid I'd be too nervous or too emotional.
01:24:26But then I realized it was important for me to take part in this dedication.
01:24:31Because we're all here to honor Luke.
01:24:34And I had the privilege to know him.
01:24:37And to love him.
01:24:38And one of the reasons I loved him so much is because he taught me about life.
01:24:45How beautiful and transitory it can be.
01:24:49And why it's so important to always be true to yourself.
01:24:53He once told me, don't let anyone tell you your dreams are too big or too small.
01:24:59The key is to have a dream and to go for it.
01:25:03And that's what Luke did to his final breath.
01:25:06But the most important lesson Luke taught me was about courage.
01:25:13I've never wanted much in my life.
01:25:17But now the one thing I want, I can't have.
01:25:25And I have to accept that and move on.
01:25:30And every time I start feeling sorry for myself, I think of Luke.
01:25:33And what he would say and what he would do to give me courage.
01:25:39And that's why I'm so honored to officially dedicate this field
01:25:42as the Luke Moldenhauer Stadium.
01:25:46Okay, Frank.
01:26:23We almost died tonight.
01:26:25Can a mother's love...
01:26:26Zoe!
01:26:27...save her daughter?
01:26:28I can't fix things for you.
01:26:30Only you can.
