00:00We tell the time so we know when different events happen throughout the day.
00:09Whether during the morning, noon, evening or night.
00:14This is an analogue clock. The blue highlighted area is called the clock face.
00:20The red lines are called hands.
00:23No! Not these types of hands!
00:27We have two types of hands on the clock. This is the minute hand.
00:33The minute hand is the longer hand.
00:37The other type of hand is called the hour hand.
00:41This hand lets us know what hour it is, and it is the shorter hand.
00:47The numbers on our clock face represent the hours.
00:51Look at the minute hand zoom around the clock.
00:54We've sped up how long it would usually take.
00:57You will notice that both hands are spinning in the same direction.
01:01We call this clockwise.
01:04What's the time?
01:07When the longer hand, the minute hand, is pointing to the number 12, and the smaller hand, the hour hand, is pointing to one of the hour numbers, we call this o'clock.
01:17For example, when the minute hand points to 12 and the hour hand points to 1, we say it's 1 o'clock.
01:24But when the minute hand, the bigger hand, gets to the number 6, then we say half past.
01:31You can see that when the minute hand is pointing to the 6, our hand is pointing to the number 7, we say the time is half past 7.
01:41Can you tell the time?
01:43Is it 12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, or is it half past 3?
01:53It's not half past 3.
01:56It's 3 o'clock.
01:59What time is it now?
02:00Is it 10 o'clock, half past 12, or is it 12 o'clock?
02:15It's not half past 12.
02:17Hint!
02:18Look at where the minute hand is pointing.
02:21It's 10 o'clock.
02:23The big hand is pointing at 12, so we say o'clock and put it after the number that the small hand is pointing to, which is 10.
02:32That means it's 10 o'clock.
02:36What is the time now?
02:39Is it half past 6, 6 o'clock, or is it half past 4?
02:44It's not 6 o'clock, because the minute hand isn't pointing to the number 12.
02:49It's not half past 6, as both hands would be pointing at 6.
02:53It's half past 4.
02:55Well done!
