00:00We're here at Body Health Care in Milford, just on the outskirts of Stafford, and we're with Kay.
00:05Hello, Kay.
00:05Hi.
00:06Kay, what is your official role and title here?
00:10So I'm a registered osteopath. I own the clinic and act as the principal osteopath for the team.
00:19And how long have you had the clinic here?
00:22The clinic's been here for three and a half years, but we've operated in Stafford for almost 30 years now.
00:28Yeah, you've done a lot of work with cyclists, haven't you?
00:31So people might recognize you from the specialised bike shop in Stafford and indeed the one at Milford, is that right?
00:37That's right, yeah. We were a husband and wife team, still are a husband and wife.
00:42Yeah.
00:42But the clinic sits separately to the bike shop now, so it gives me a chance to concentrate on what we do
00:51and try and offer the best service that we can to people in the locality.
00:55So what's kind of the main issues that people are coming to you for when they come through the door?
01:02People come to us with all manner of problems, normally pain, but pain and restriction,
01:08or people who they want to try and meet a challenge, a physical challenge,
01:14so somebody who's doing an ultramarathon or even their first 5k walk, as part of their training,
01:22part of their recovery, but also to treat any injuries that occur on the way.
01:27But it isn't just for people who have sporting injuries, it's for people who are uncomfortable just sitting at home,
01:37for example, or who have a pre-diagnosed condition like a scoliosis or something that they've picked up in their life
01:46and they're living with. So we help people long-term with pain and restriction as well as new injuries.
01:52Do you think that a lot of us lead more sedentary lives, a lot of us are kind of more sitting-down role jobs,
02:00does that play a part, you think, in not being great for the body and causing problems?
02:04It's certainly part of it, especially with working from home,
02:07so people aren't even getting up and going out to work, walking to the train,
02:13you know, even walking to the car and walking around the office.
02:17So it's easy to get drawn into a whole day at a desk without getting up and moving around.
02:24The body just isn't designed to do that.
02:26So, I mean, you're on your feet a lot here at work doing what you do.
02:30Yes.
02:31Is there any things that you've kind of instilled into your life in terms of exercise or walking,
02:37just to make sure you kind of keep tip-top yourself and that you could recommend to others?
02:41Absolutely. I try and at least try some of the things that my patients do
02:46so that I have a direct empathy with them.
02:50But also, I enjoy going to the gym. I go there three times a week.
02:55I'm a lady of a particular age, so it's important to keep strength up for, you know, long-life health.
03:03So that's what I do.
03:05So tell us, Kay, about other services that you offer here.
03:09So, as well as osteopathy, which forms the basis of our treatments,
03:14we have a musculoskeletal clinician who has a master's in musculoskeletal medicine.
03:23We have somebody who looks after foot health care.
03:27We have an aesthetic service with a qualified doctor and registered nurse.
03:34We have a hypnotherapist because, obviously, we meet people with lots of different backgrounds
03:39and the link with mental health and physical health is undeniable.
03:45And we have a chartered physiotherapist and a sports therapist.
03:50So we offer lots of different types of manual therapy as well as all the adjunct therapies to go with that.
03:57We offer acupuncture, shockwave therapy, low-level laser treatment and exercise rehabilitation programs.
04:04And you mentioned you touched upon people there who kind of require your services,
04:12who are aiming for certain challenges and sports.
04:15Just tell us a little bit.
04:16You've got an interesting background.
04:18You used to work with British Olympians.
04:21Is that right?
04:21That's right.
04:22Yeah.
04:23So tell us about that.
04:24It's interesting.
04:25So I worked with British Cycling, British Gymnastics, English Table Tennis as well, local teams as well.
04:36So I still am affiliated with several running coaches and teams and gyms in Stafford.
04:43Yeah.
04:44But the international work with Olympians was really interesting.
04:50Very, it's great to build your kind of knowledge at that level.
04:56So the ask of an elite athlete is the absolute top few percent.
05:02Yeah.
05:02You know, you've only got that last little percentage to work with.
05:07But it filters down, filters down to working with every single person from children all the way up to people.
05:15I think my oldest patient is in her 90s.
05:17Oh, wow.
05:18So that must be when you were working with Olympians.
05:22I can imagine the pressure, you know, someone's they've trained all their life for this moment and it can come down to like a moment.
05:29And then they're coming to you saying, oh, something's not quite right here.
05:33And they're looking at you to put you back in tip top shape and get, you know, that's a lot of pressure.
05:39It is a lot of pressure.
05:40And you work within a brilliant team.
05:43So from coach to nutritionist to the athlete themselves.
05:47And then we form part of the medical support.
05:50Yeah.
05:51Working together as a team to get that person on the podium.
05:54And I hope if they did have any success that they included you in the party afterwards.
06:00Because obviously, you know, there's a lot of people behind the scenes, isn't there, like yourself that goes to.
06:04Absolutely.
06:05Yeah.
06:05So if people want to find out a little bit more about what you do and what you offer here in Melford, where can they find that?
06:13They can find us online.
06:15So we have a website and that's body.co.uk.
06:20Now, body has got two Ys.
06:22So B-O-D-Y-Y.
06:23And it stands for the body and the Y.
06:26So we don't want to just have a treadmill of people coming through, say, with low back pain and treating them all the same.
06:35Yeah.
06:35Everybody gets looked at and they have personalised and precise care.
06:40So we find the why.
06:43Why have you got back pain?
06:44And that helps us to be more effective and more efficient with our treatment.
06:49So rather than coming, let's say, two dozen times, hopefully we can turn symptoms around with just a handful of treatments.
06:57Great.
06:57Well, thank you.
06:58They can also phone us.
07:00Yeah.
07:00So the phone number is Stafford.
07:02So 01785 561 880.
07:06And we're on social media.
07:09Well, thank you for that little glimpse into your world here at Body.
07:12Okay.
07:13All the best.
07:14Thank you very much.
