Medway Conservative defects to Reform UK

Councillor Robbie Lammas was once as special adviser in the previous government.   Local Democracy Reporter Ollie Leader caught up with him this week.

00:00As Conservative councillors have been jumping ship to Reform UK.

00:09There was an issue that took place locally where I felt I was not supported in standing

00:13up for our flags being flown locally.

00:16One of those who has switched sides is Robbie Lammas, a Medway councillor and former advisor

00:22in the Rishi Sunak government.

00:25But there will be some people in Princes Park Ward who voted for a Conservative councillor

00:29and to those people I say I'm truly sorry.

00:32There's nothing I can do to change that, but I do speak to people, I live in the ward

00:36I represent, I'm part of the community here and a lot of people have been encouraging

00:41me to go to Reform.

00:42I mean I've had four people contact me this morning saying I'm very encouraged by what

00:46you do, I want to do the same, how can I do it?

00:48So potentially the Reform group could become a sizeable opposition force here at Medway

00:52Council?

00:53It's possible, however specifically on Medway Council there are quite a lot of considered

00:58seasoned, experienced councillors who have been in the party for many years and many

01:02of which are looking forward to retiring at the end of this term.

01:05So I don't think you'll have that seismic shift on Medway, but I do think you'll see

01:08one or two come over before too long.

01:10The move has not gone unnoticed.

01:13Conservative group leader George Perfect says that Lammas should reflect on his own part

01:19in the mistakes of the previous government and warning that rather than focusing on themselves,

01:25should be focused on providing a strong, credible and effective alternative to the Labour Council

01:30in Medway.

01:32But none of that takes away from the rise of reform in a traditionally conservative county.
