Ted Stryker (Dana Andrews) has drifted through life unsuccessfully since he led a dreadful air attack in World War II. When his wife, Ellen (Linda Darnell), and his son leave him, Ted hurries onto their plane, where he tries to convince Ellen that he has changed. Meanwhile, many of the people on the flight, including the pilot (Elroy Hirsch), fall ill with food poisoning. It's left up to Ted, with help from Captain Treleaven (Sterling Hayden) in air control, to safely land the plane.

00:00:00The End
00:01:59The 172nd Squadron of the Royal Air Force crossed the boundary of Germany under the command of Canadian squadron leader Ted Stryker.
00:02:07Their mission? Penetrate enemy fighter cover and hold the formation intact for a vital incendiary raid on the German supply depots of Weisbaden.
00:02:16At 0730, 12 miles from the target, enemy fighters were sighted directly ahead.
00:02:22Stryker led his planes to meet them.
00:02:24Oh, yeah.
00:02:25Okay.
00:02:29Let's go.
00:02:33Let's go.
00:03:03Let's go.
00:03:33Let's go.
00:04:03Let's go.
00:04:11Five weeks later, the war in Europe was over.
00:04:15But for squadron leader Stryker, seriously wounded in the course of the raid, a new kind of war was just beginning.
00:04:23It's closed in, Ted. What about the alternate target?
00:04:27We can't see anything in this board.
00:04:28Maybe we're off course.
00:04:29We're on course.
00:04:30We're too low, Ted. We're too low!
00:04:32It seems to be healing very nicely. Everything considered. Pressure on the optic nerve is almost completely gone.
00:04:53Is there any pain left in there? No.
00:05:01Keep looking straight ahead.
00:05:03I heard about that meeting at headquarters this morning. You're taking all the blame for what happened in that raid. It's a pretty courageous thing to do.
00:05:17Was it? Because of my mistake, six men didn't return from that raid. What's the good of condemning yourself? Nothing you can do about it now.
00:05:29No, there's nothing I can do about it. But that doesn't mean I can live with it.
00:05:33You're going to have to. Sooner or later, you might as well get used to it.
00:05:36If you don't, you haven't got much of a life ahead of you.
00:05:39It's easy to say.
00:05:41Those were my men.
00:05:43They've been through a lot together.
00:05:45They were depending on me.
00:05:47They'd be going home now if I hadn't failed them.
00:05:51What about failing yourself?
00:05:53You know, I've been watching you the past few weeks here at the hospital, seeing no one, speaking to no one.
00:06:03You're on the run, Strecker. You've got to face what happened. Forget it.
00:06:08Nobody's got a corner in mistakes, in a war or any other time.
00:06:13Good luck, Strecker.
00:06:23You have the authority to hire anybody you want, haven't you?
00:06:38After they're cleared for the kind of highly classified government work we're doing? Yes.
00:06:44What is it? My war record again?
00:06:46No, not really. You're the only one keeping that alive.
00:06:50For most people, it's ancient history.
00:06:52You expect me to believe that?
00:06:54It's the truth.
00:06:55Frankly, what bothers us is your record since the war.
00:06:59Twelve jobs in ten years, and not one of them shows you can accept any responsibility.
00:07:05Not one of them was worthy of a man of your training and experience.
00:07:09But I've stayed away from the thing I was really trained for.
00:07:13You know why.
00:07:15But now...
00:07:17Look, Frank, I may be all the things they say I am.
00:07:22But I think I can handle that job, and I need it very badly.
00:07:26My wife and I are...
00:07:28Well, we're right at the breaking point.
00:07:32I'll do anything you say if you'll just give me a chance.
00:07:35I won't let you down, Frank. I promise you.
00:07:38All right. I'll see what I can do.
00:07:42Thanks.
00:07:56Hi, Mrs. Clirty. Anything for me?
00:07:58No. There's one for your wife.
00:08:00You say, it looks like you two are going to do a little celebrating.
00:08:03Oh, everything the law allows. After all, this is a pretty special occasion.
00:08:06I bet I know. You've got that job you've been wanting.
00:08:09It looks that way. I'll tell you all about it later.
00:08:11Ellen?
00:08:21Oh, Ellen, I think...
00:08:41You're welcome, attends.
00:08:45You're welcome, horrid.
00:08:46You're welcome.
00:08:48We're welcome.
00:08:50Tell us...
00:08:51You can come home.
00:08:52You can come home, wait a minute.
00:08:54Okay.
00:08:55You're welcome.
00:08:57You're welcome.
00:08:58Everyone is back.
00:09:00Oh, my dear.
00:09:02Nothing.
00:09:03I'm so sorry.
00:09:04I'll tell you.
00:09:06You're welcome, my dear.
00:09:07I'm so sorry.
00:09:08I'm so sorry.
00:09:09I'm so sorry.
00:09:10I'm going to take you off in a few minutes, sir.
00:09:13Do you want to take the empty seat right up there?
00:09:20I'm going to take you off in a few minutes.
00:09:22You want to take the empty seat right up there?
00:09:40. . .
00:10:10Let's go.
00:10:40Let's go.

00:12:20Let's go.
00:12:21Let's go.
00:12:22You get a date on a date?
00:12:23Come in, girl.
00:12:24Come in.
00:12:25Dad, I thought you weren't coming.
00:12:26Hi, Joey.
00:12:27I came home early and found your note.
00:12:28I guess you meant for me to read it later.
00:12:29Ellen, I've got to talk to you.
00:12:30Joey can sit in my seat back there.
00:12:32I just don't want to go over it anymore.
00:12:33I just thought...
00:12:35How'd you like to go up in the cockpit, Joey?
00:12:38Could we?
00:12:39I'll check with this tour distance and see if they'll let us up there.
00:12:42Be reasonable, Janet.
00:12:43I can't help breaking our date in Vancouver.
00:12:45I've got to be in Seattle by tomorrow night or I'll lose the late club job.
00:12:48You know what it means if I can work myself into that MC spot?
00:12:51We could be married by summer.
00:12:53Sounds a little familiar, like one of your routines.
00:12:56I'm sure whatever your reasons are, they're excellent, Mr. Decker.
00:12:59Your name, sir?
00:13:00Stryker.
00:13:01Oh, yes, Mr. Stryker.
00:13:02I was just speaking to your wife and a little boy.
00:13:04I didn't know you were traveling together.
00:13:06That's all right.
00:13:07Look, I wonder if you could do me a favor.
00:13:09My boy has never been inside of a cockpit before,
00:13:12and like all kids, he's crazy about planes and pilots.
00:13:16Oh, I'm sure we can arrange that.
00:13:18The temperature's creeping up again on number three, Bill.
00:13:20I'll open the cowlclap for a moment.
00:13:24Still running a little hot.
00:13:26We have visitors.
00:13:27Hello.
00:13:28Hi.
00:13:29Captain Wilson and our first officer, Mr. Stewart,
00:13:31and this is Mr. Stryker and his son, Joey.
00:13:34We don't want to be in the way up here,
00:13:35but I just know the boy might have a quick look.
00:13:37You feeling any better?
00:13:39Yeah, I'm okay now.
00:13:40I'll be serving dinner pretty soon.
00:13:42We have a choice tonight, grilled halibut or lamb chops.
00:13:44I'll try the fish.
00:13:45It was pretty good last week.
00:13:46Same for me, Janet.
00:13:47Okay.
00:13:47That's what I'd like to, please.
00:13:49All right.
00:13:49I'll serve it to you as soon as you come back.
00:13:51What about you, Mr. Stryker?
00:13:52I'll have the meat.
00:13:54All right.
00:13:54Come on.
00:13:55Move up here.
00:13:55You'll see better.
00:13:58Joey, here's something we give our special visitors.
00:14:00Would you like to have it?
00:14:03Thanks a lot.
00:14:04Have you ever been in the cockpit before?
00:14:06No, sir.
00:14:07I've never been up in a plane before.
00:14:09How do you like it?
00:14:10Swell.
00:14:11Are those the things that work the propellers?
00:14:14How'd you know that?
00:14:15My dad.
00:14:16He was a flyer in the war.
00:14:17He flew jets.
00:14:18I told you before, Joey.
00:14:20They didn't have jets when I flew.
00:14:22Oh.
00:14:23Well, he flew a lot anyway.
00:14:25Fighters.
00:14:26Shot down a lot of planes, too, didn't you, Dad?
00:14:28Joey.
00:14:29And you never fly anymore?
00:14:31I thought you service guys never got out of your system.
00:14:33You want me to check the weather, Bill?
00:14:35No, I'll get it.
00:14:35Excuse me.
00:14:36We better get back now.
00:14:38Uh, Joey can stay up here for a while if he'd like to.
00:14:41Could I, Dad?
00:14:42Okay.
00:14:42If you don't get in the way.
00:14:43Thanks very much.
00:14:46Flight 714 to Winnipeg Radio.
00:14:48Climbing, climbing to cruise 8000.
00:14:50What's the latest on the weather, please?
00:14:51It's not good.
00:14:53Looks like snow and ice crystals around vagina.
00:14:55Most likely some fog in an hour or two.
00:14:57But you're not going into Calgary, so that shouldn't bother you.
00:15:00What's the forecast on Vancouver?
00:15:02Should be all right when the fog clears, Captain.
00:15:04Flight 714.
00:15:05Thanks a lot.
00:15:08Well, Joey, what do you think of all this?
00:15:10Would you like to grow up and be a pilot like your dad?
00:15:12Try it again, Whitney.
00:15:14Just try.
00:15:15I have.
00:15:17I've tried to believe that you'd take hold somewhere.
00:15:20Ted, face it for once.
00:15:23We've been on the run ever since the war.
00:15:25Different cities, different jobs.
00:15:28All the time you've kept going further and further away from Joey and me.
00:15:32He's needed you, Ted.
00:15:36I've needed you.
00:15:37But you were never there.
00:15:40I know things haven't been right for a long time, Ellen.
00:15:43But it'll be different.
00:15:45Like it was in the beginning.
00:15:47Remember?
00:15:47I remember everything.
00:15:49It's all I've ever had to go on.
00:15:52Mostly I remember the nights when we were together.
00:15:57I remember how you used to hold me.
00:16:01And then afterwards how we'd watch until the sun finally came up.
00:16:05When it did, it was almost like each new day was created only for us.
00:16:14That's the way I've always wanted it to be, no matter what's happened, Ellen.
00:16:18But I remember other things, too.
00:16:20How you began to change right in front of my eyes.
00:16:23Everything that we had together, Ted, has gotten lost somewhere.
00:16:30It isn't what you did.
00:16:32It's more and more what you didn't do.
00:16:36Maybe I should have been of more help to you.
00:16:40But you wouldn't even let me do that.
00:16:43All I've ever wanted was to see you stop running away.
00:16:47To face the one big mistake you ever made in your whole life.
00:16:50It's the kind of a mistake that any man could make under fire.
00:16:54And I've waited, waited so long for you to make a stand somewhere.
00:16:59For the three of us.
00:17:00I will. I promise.
00:17:03Joy and I can't live any longer on your promises. I'm sorry.
00:17:06Don't you feel anything for me at all anymore?
00:17:11It takes so many things to make love last.
00:17:15Most of all, it takes respect.
00:17:19I can't live with a man I don't respect.
00:17:23I can't live with a man I don't know.
00:17:25I can't live with a man I don't know about that.
00:17:27What are you putting in the cupboard quick?
00:17:33Boys.
00:17:35This is just a drop of water, you know.
00:17:36Are you about ready for something to eat?
00:17:38Well, we're about worked up to it at that.
00:17:40What would you like, grilled halibut or lamb chops?
00:17:42Well, now, isn't this just like home?
00:17:44I'll have a wee bit of the halibut.
00:17:46Are the chips come with it?
00:17:47Well, no, not chips.
00:17:48We have the specialty of the house.
00:17:49We have a gratin' potatoes.
00:17:51What about you, gentlemen?
00:17:52I believe I'll have the meat, miss.
00:17:53And so will I.
00:17:54Okay.
00:17:55Say, why don't you come to the big game with us tomorrow?
00:17:57It should be a good one, you know.
00:17:58Oh, I don't know anything about football.
00:18:00Well, you'll be right at home with my two friends here.
00:18:03They don't know anything about it either.
00:18:05Oh, I can hardly believe that.
00:18:07You just don't understand this new formation the Argos have.
00:18:11This chap goes way out into the flat where he can take off fast or go long.
00:18:15That's what they call a flanker.
00:18:17And you just cannot defense against it.
00:18:19We'll see you later, Joey.
00:18:28Okay.
00:18:28Thanks a lot.
00:18:29Nice boy, huh?
00:18:30Sure is.
00:18:31Hey, we've been waiting for you.
00:18:33A little bit late tonight.
00:18:34Who wants to be first?
00:18:36Go ahead, Walt.
00:18:36I got it.
00:18:37Okay.
00:18:37How's the weather?
00:18:40Not so good.
00:18:41We've got some heavy stuff ahead of us.
00:18:42It might get rough unless we can climb on top.
00:18:44Oh, do you think we'll get in on time?
00:18:46About a half hour late, I'd say.
00:18:48Hey, Jan.
00:18:48Yeah.
00:18:49How are you and that boyfriend of yours doing back there?
00:18:51You think you'll ever get him to the altar?
00:18:52I'll get him there if I have to drag him every inch of the way.
00:18:55After all, remember, I've been trained for every kind of emergency.
00:18:59How's the fish?
00:19:00Not bad.
00:19:01Not bad at all.
00:19:02Save me some seconds if you have some left over, huh?
00:19:04Save you some seconds?
00:19:06Mr. Stewart, I think with your appetite that this airline can't afford you any longer.
00:19:10Well, back to the kitchen.
00:19:13I sure wish you had flown jets, Dad.
00:19:15I'm afraid they're a little too fast for me, Joey.
00:19:18Why don't you fly anymore?
00:19:19I wish you would.
00:19:21Then you could take me up with you.
00:19:23Maybe you could even teach me to fly.
00:19:26That'd be great.
00:19:27We could have a lot of fun.
00:19:30I just don't seem to have the time anymore, Joey.
00:19:33You never have time for anything.
00:19:35I know.
00:19:37Dad.
00:19:39Why were Mom and me going away without you?
00:19:43Well, it was a joy.
00:19:45Your mother felt it might be a good idea for you two to have a little trip together.
00:19:50I just didn't know whether I could go or not.
00:19:53Until the last minute.
00:19:55I was afraid we weren't going to see you again.
00:19:58Ever.
00:20:00Where did you ever get that idea?
00:20:02Are you finished?
00:20:14Oh, thank you.
00:20:16I don't like this rain, love.
00:20:17Our boys would get hurt on a wet field.
00:20:19It's going to clear off in Vancouver by tomorrow, Mr. Whitman.
00:20:22We just got that report.
00:20:23Well, I'm glad to hear it.
00:20:24I can rest a bit easier now.
00:20:25You see, between you and me, I have some fairly nice wages on the contest tomorrow.
00:20:30Oh, well, I wish you a lot of luck.
00:20:31Well, thank you very much.
00:20:32Would you care for a drop, madam?
00:20:40Certainly not.
00:20:41I had such a good sleep.
00:20:58Wait a minute.
00:20:59I think there's someone staring at us.
00:21:02Patty, we're on an airplane.
00:21:03There are other people with us, remember?
00:21:04He's not joining our act now, is he, Tony?
00:21:07You know I work alone.
00:21:08Oh, stop.
00:21:09I'll have fine help for meself.
00:21:11Excuse me, young man.
00:21:13Are you in show business?
00:21:14Who, me?
00:21:15He's a nice looking boy.
00:21:17He might be movie material.
00:21:19Say, what's his name?
00:21:21Patty.
00:21:22He works for me.
00:21:23Hello, darling.
00:21:25Oh, fasten your safety belts.
00:21:26It's going to be a rough ride.
00:21:29It certainly is.
00:21:30Joey, here's your dinner.
00:21:32Well, you didn't bring me my dinner, darling.
00:21:34Well, what would you like?
00:21:35A little kiss.
00:21:36Not now, later.
00:21:38He's got a one-track mind, just like me.
00:21:40Oh, Patty, you're impossible.
00:21:55Yes?
00:21:56I can't stand it.
00:21:58What is it?
00:21:59My stomach.
00:22:01I've never felt anything like it before.
00:22:04Help me.
00:22:06Please help me.
00:22:07Just a moment.
00:22:08I'll get you some Dramamine.
00:22:12Help me.
00:22:18Yes?
00:22:19Captain, one of the women passengers is very sick.
00:22:22Air sick?
00:22:23I think so, but I've never seen it so acute.
00:22:25Find out if there's a doctor on board.
00:22:28As quietly as you can.
00:22:30I'll be back as soon as we get over this weather.
00:22:34We're running into icing conditions.
00:22:36Can you clear us to get over it at 10,000 feet?
00:22:38Okay, ATC clears flight 714 to 10,000.
00:22:43Go ahead.
00:22:45714 to ATC.
00:22:54Here, these pills should help you.
00:22:55Now try to relax.
00:22:56The captain will be back to see you in just a moment.
00:22:58How long before we land?
00:23:00Almost five hours.
00:23:01Oh.
00:23:01I'm sorry I had to wake you.
00:23:16There's no emergency.
00:23:17It's just a passenger who's in a little discomfort, and we thought perhaps a doctor could help.
00:23:20So go back to sleep.
00:23:21Fasten your safety belts.
00:23:22We'll be out of the storm in a little while.
00:23:24Stewardess.
00:23:25Yes.
00:23:25I think the man next to me is a doctor.
00:23:27Oh, thank you.
00:23:28Sir, excuse me, sir.
00:23:30I'm sorry to have to wake you.
00:23:31Are you a doctor?
00:23:32That's right.
00:23:32We have a passenger who's very sick.
00:23:34Could you come and take a look at her?
00:23:35Yes, of course.
00:23:37My boy is sick to his stomach.
00:23:38It's like hair sickness, but it's a lot worse.
00:23:40I've never seen anything like it before.
00:23:42Well, this gentleman's a doctor.
00:23:43I'll be with you in a moment.
00:23:44Try to keep him as quiet as you can.
00:23:46All right, but hurry, will you, doctor?
00:23:50This gentleman is a doctor.
00:23:51He's going to help you.
00:23:52May I see your tongue, please?
00:23:54I'll be back in a minute.
00:24:15You'd better tell the captain.
00:24:16We've got to land as soon as we can.
00:24:18This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.
00:24:19What do you think it is?
00:24:20Well, I can't be sure yet,
00:24:22but I know it's serious enough
00:24:23to land in the nearest city
00:24:24with hospital facilities.
00:24:25Better tell the captain I want to speak to him.
00:24:27Certainly.
00:24:29Put this around you, Joey.
00:24:30Keep you warm.
00:24:32Well, son, sorry I'm not feeling well.
00:24:34Would you put your tongue on, please?
00:24:40What's he had to eat in the last 24 hours?
00:24:41Oh, just the usual things.
00:24:43Bacon and poached eggs for breakfast,
00:24:45a roast beef sandwich at noon,
00:24:47and dinner on the plane.
00:24:49Well, he should help him.
00:24:53I'll be back in a minute.
00:24:53Captain, how soon do we land?
00:25:06Can't.
00:25:07Why?
00:25:07Weather conditions.
00:25:08Fog is closed down everything
00:25:09this side of the mountains.
00:25:10We'll have to go through to Vancouver.
00:25:12But is that faster than turning back?
00:25:13Yes, we passed the point of no return.
00:25:15Well, how soon do you expect to land?
00:25:17About 2.15 Pacific time,
00:25:19roughly four hours from now.
00:25:20Well, I'll just have to do what I can.
00:25:28Get him out of there!
00:25:49What is it, doctor?
00:25:49What's happening?
00:25:50There's a common denominator
00:25:51to these attacks.
00:25:52There's got to be.
00:25:54The most likely thing is food.
00:25:57What was it we had for dinner tonight?
00:25:58Well, the main course was meat or fish.
00:26:01Yes, yes, I remember I had meat.
00:26:02What did he have?
00:26:04Fish.
00:26:05Remember, two sick passengers?
00:26:06Well, the little boy had fish.
00:26:08I don't remember about the woman.
00:26:09Well, find out quickly, please.
00:26:14Yes.
00:26:15Oh, Stuart, as my wife is very sick,
00:26:16can you do something, please?
00:26:17Well, the doctor will be with you
00:26:18in just a moment.
00:26:19Oh, one thing.
00:26:21Do you know what she had for dinner?
00:26:22Yes, of course.
00:26:23We both had fish.
00:26:24Why?
00:26:24Oh, it's nothing to be alarmed about.
00:26:26We'll get back to you very quickly.
00:26:28We'll need ambulances standing by
00:26:29and the hospital should be notified.
00:26:31They have to have special equipment ready.
00:26:32Right.
00:26:33Is there any chance at all
00:26:34of landing near Calgary?
00:26:36None.
00:26:37Doctor, the woman ate fish, too,
00:26:41and there are two more cases
00:26:41than they ate fish.
00:26:43Well, now we know what we're facing.
00:26:46Why not everybody on the plane
00:26:48who had fish
00:26:48and helped me get medicine to them?
00:26:49Captain, you better notify Vancouver
00:26:51to put a ban on serving any food
00:26:53from the source that furnished that fish.
00:26:55Doctor?
00:26:56Yeah?
00:26:56I just remembered something.
00:26:59I ate fish, too.
00:27:00Oh, darling.
00:27:02Oh, here's the teeth hurting.
00:27:09Don't try to stay covered, Joey.
00:27:10I know it hurts, darling,
00:27:12but your father's just gone for the doctor.
00:27:15The stewardess, what's going on?
00:27:17Just keep your seat, please.
00:27:19It's always worse.
00:27:20I've got to see the doctor.
00:27:21He'll be with you in a minute.
00:27:22Several people are ill.
00:27:23We're doing all we can.
00:27:24What's the matter?
00:27:24Does he know what it is?
00:27:25You better talk to him.
00:27:29Can I help?
00:27:30Oh, yes, Tony.
00:27:31Would you help me give out the medicine?
00:27:32Sure.
00:27:34Calgary Radio, this is 714.
00:27:36We're in trouble.
00:27:37We've got to have all altitudes below us cleared
00:27:39and priority approach and landing at Vancouver.
00:27:41Go ahead.
00:27:43Stand by, 714.
00:27:46Air traffic control, Vancouver.
00:27:48Priority message.
00:27:48Calgary Radio for Vancouver, dispatcher.
00:27:52Hold it.
00:27:53This is Cross Canada.
00:27:55Calgary Radio, flight 714, notifies emergency.
00:27:59Once all lower altitudes cleared,
00:28:01priority approach and landing.
00:28:02Hold it.
00:28:04Flight 714 notifies emergency.
00:28:09Hold all takeoffs.
00:28:10That's right.
00:28:11I don't want another plane in the air.
00:28:13I don't care what the commitments are.
00:28:15Charter flight 714 is in trouble.
00:28:17Food poisoning.
00:28:18I can't go into detail now,
00:28:20but it's coming in without a co-pilot.
00:28:22That's what I said.
00:28:23The co-pilot's unconscious,
00:28:25and there's a chance the food poisoning
00:28:26will strike the captain, too.
00:28:27What about that Air Force North Star
00:28:29just reported at 18,000?
00:28:30Tower, when the North Star reports,
00:28:32bring it straight in.
00:28:33And clear green airway 1.
00:28:35Yeah.
00:28:36I'll let you know the minute anything happens.
00:28:38You don't really believe there's a chance of that,
00:28:39do you?
00:28:40The captain getting sick, I mean?
00:28:41You read the message.
00:28:43This is going to be a real sweat.
00:28:45Let's take this in the verdict.
00:28:49Put out a general bulletin to suspend all meal service
00:28:51on unscheduled flights out of Winnipeg,
00:28:53and try to keep everyone out of this area.
00:28:55We don't want a mob out here.
00:28:56What's the latest on the weather at Calgary?
00:28:57Close right down.
00:28:58Low stratus and ground fog.
00:29:00So are Edmonton and Lethbridge.
00:29:01You working them direct?
00:29:03No, through Calgary.
00:29:04All right, get a message through.
00:29:05Ask them if they've got a doctor on board.
00:29:07And tell them we're getting the best possible
00:29:08medical advice here.
00:29:09Get me Dr. Davidson.
00:29:11He'll find his home number in the emergency list.
00:29:12Then get me the police.
00:29:14I want the weather on every kind of landing field
00:29:16on their side of the mountains.
00:29:17Do you understand?
00:29:18Any place where there's a chance to land this plane.
00:29:20No dice.
00:29:21Calgary's run that check.
00:29:23There's fog down to the deck everywhere
00:29:24east of the Rockies.
00:29:26They'll have to come through.
00:29:28How long ago did Calgary talk to Captain Wilson?
00:29:31About 10 minutes.
00:29:32Is he still feeling all right?
00:29:33It hasn't affected him at all so far.
00:29:39He's got to fight it off.
00:29:43The morphine should help you hold it off.
00:29:46Do you still feel all right?
00:29:47Yeah.
00:29:48All the solimony logic to these things,
00:29:49you might not be affected at all.
00:29:51How are the people back there?
00:29:52We'll take care of them all right.
00:29:54You're sure there's no possibility
00:29:56of the weather clearing long enough
00:29:57for us to land before we start over the mountains?
00:29:59Not a chance.
00:30:00I'd better get back.
00:30:02I think I'll tell them all what's causing the trouble.
00:30:05Do you agree?
00:30:07Go ahead.
00:30:09Doctor,
00:30:10I'm glad you're here.
00:30:20May I have your attention, please?
00:30:21My name is Baird.
00:30:24I'm a doctor.
00:30:26As you know,
00:30:26some of the passengers are sick.
00:30:28We suspect that the fish
00:30:29which was served for dinner
00:30:30might have been contaminated.
00:30:32There's no cause for alarm.
00:30:33Even if you had fish,
00:30:34you might not be affected.
00:30:36And if you did have fish,
00:30:37we'll tell you what to do.
00:30:38The boy's in an awful lot of pain.
00:30:44Can you do anything for him?
00:30:45He'll be asleep before it all.
00:30:47Keep him quiet and warm.
00:30:48That's your job.
00:30:49What's going on up there?
00:30:50I think I have a right to know.
00:30:52Don't worry.
00:30:53Everything's all right.
00:30:54Dad, don't leave me.
00:30:58I won't, Joey.
00:30:59Pardon me, Mr. Whitman.
00:31:05Did you have meat or fish for dinner?
00:31:06I had the blinkered fish.
00:31:07Well, here, take these pills.
00:31:08They'll make you sick.
00:31:10Fine.
00:31:10How do you do this is?
00:31:11They give you your dinner
00:31:12and come around and aspirate back.
00:31:19Captain?
00:31:20Captain Wilson?
00:31:24Quickly, it's the captain.
00:31:29Bill, you've got to give me something
00:31:36so I can hold out until we land.
00:31:38You understand?
00:31:39The automatic pilot will fly itself
00:31:41on this course,
00:31:41but I've got to take it in.
00:31:43Oh, watch the controller.
00:31:45Get up, Mike.
00:31:49We've got to keep him warm.
00:31:59Doctor, can you do it?
00:32:09Can you help him make a landing?
00:32:11Stewardess.
00:32:12What's your first name?
00:32:13Janet.
00:32:15Well, Janet, you're a member of this crew.
00:32:17Can you face some unpleasant facts?
00:32:20I think so.
00:32:21All right.
00:32:22Unless I can get all these people
00:32:23to a hospital quickly,
00:32:24I can't even be sure
00:32:25of saving their lives.
00:32:26I don't understand.
00:32:28What is it?
00:32:28There's something toxic
00:32:29in that food tonight.
00:32:30Some kind of bacteria poison.
00:32:31How did it get there?
00:32:33There are hundreds of ways.
00:32:34That's not important.
00:32:34What is important,
00:32:36these people need hospital facilities.
00:32:38Stimulants,
00:32:38intravenous treatment for shock.
00:32:40But the pilots...
00:32:42How are we going to land?
00:32:44Is there anybody else on board
00:32:45who can land this plane?
00:32:47There's no one on board
00:32:47from the airline.
00:32:48I don't know about anybody else.
00:32:49How many passengers are there?
00:32:5138.
00:32:52I think you ought to know
00:32:53what our chances are.
00:32:54The life of everybody aboard
00:32:55depends on just one thing.
00:32:57Finding someone back there
00:32:58who not only can fly this plane,
00:33:00but who didn't have fish for dinner.
00:33:03I suppose I better begin asking.
00:33:05Wait.
00:33:06I don't want the passengers to know yet.
00:33:07It might start a panic.
00:33:08Well, what am I going to tell them?
00:33:09Tell them, uh...
00:33:11Tell them the first officer is sick
00:33:12and the captain wondered
00:33:13if there's someone with flying experience
00:33:15who can help with the radio.
00:33:16Do you understand, Janet?
00:33:19Yes, doctor.
00:33:20Okay.
00:33:21Excuse me.
00:33:35But the first officer is ill
00:33:36and the captain would like someone
00:33:38with flying experience
00:33:39to help him with the radio.
00:33:41Do you know anything about planes?
00:33:43I flew in the war,
00:33:44but that was a long time ago.
00:33:47I wouldn't know anything about it.
00:33:48Would you go up, please?
00:33:49But both pilots...
00:34:04Can you fly this airplane and land it?
00:34:14No, not a chance.
00:34:17Doctor, I ask everyone, Mr. Stryker's the only one.
00:34:20What flying experience have you had?
00:34:22Well, I was a fighter pilot in the war,
00:34:24but I flew little combat planes with only one engine.
00:34:27This has four.
00:34:29There's no comparison.
00:34:31The flying characteristics are completely different.
00:34:33It's a different kind of flying altogether.
00:34:36Besides, I haven't touched any kind of a plane for 10 years.
00:34:39Mr. Stryker, I know nothing about flying.
00:34:42All I know is this.
00:34:44You're the only person on this plane who can possibly fly it.
00:34:47You're the only chance we've got.
00:34:49Are you sure?
00:34:50What about the pilots?
00:34:52You're a doctor. Can't you do something?
00:34:54Unless I can get all these people to a hospital quickly,
00:34:56I can't be sure of saving their lives.
00:35:00Mr. Stryker, the same thing is true of your son.
00:35:07How long can they stay alive without help?
00:35:09Two hours, maybe. Two and a half at the most.
00:35:39What are you going to tell the people back there?
00:35:41Nothing yet.
00:35:42You better tell my wife something.
00:35:43She's expecting me back.
00:35:44She must be brought up here.
00:35:45She'll have to know about this.
00:35:46Janet, you better go and get her.
00:35:47Wait.
00:35:48What about our boy?
00:35:49Oh, I'll see that he's taken care of.
00:35:50Let's see.
00:35:51Altitude.
00:35:5210,000 feet.
00:35:53Level flight.
00:35:54Airspeed.
00:35:55140 knots.
00:35:56Course 290.
00:35:58Your own automatic pilot.
00:35:59Thank you for that.
00:36:00Probably not.
00:36:01Probably not.
00:36:02No.
00:36:03No.
00:36:04No.
00:36:05No.
00:36:06No.
00:36:07No.
00:36:08No.
00:36:09No.
00:36:10No.
00:36:11No.
00:36:12No.
00:36:13No.
00:36:14No.
00:36:15No.
00:36:16No.
00:36:17No.
00:36:18No.
00:36:19No.
00:36:27lui.
00:36:28階段.
00:36:29Myiler Gardner.
00:36:31It should be indicated.
00:36:36There it is.
00:36:37There we'll need a mouthful.
00:36:39Wenn die passe, was the weather not so many people were flying and hadn't success?
00:36:44The captain said we were near Calgary, but we couldn't land because of bad weather.
00:36:47Fog?
00:36:48It's closed down everything around here. Except we'd have to go through to Vancouver.
00:36:52Across the mountains?
00:36:53That's right.
00:36:54What about Vancouver? Is it clear at Vancouver?
00:36:57I think it will be by the time we get there.
00:37:00It's got to be.
00:37:07Ted, what are you doing? You can't fly this plane.
00:37:11That's what I've been trying to tell these people, Ellen.
00:37:13But they seem to have other ideas.
00:37:15Mrs. Stryker, I haven't time to put this gently, so I'll be very direct.
00:37:18Both pilots are sick.
00:37:20Every one of us on this plane is in a desperate situation.
00:37:23Yes, including your son. Your husband is the only hope we've got.
00:37:27But he's...
00:37:28If we're gonna come through this, he's gonna need some faith from all of us.
00:37:32Including you. Do I make myself clear, Mrs. Stryker?
00:37:38I understand.
00:37:39I'm gonna need someone to help me up here, to work the radio and a few other things.
00:37:42You're the only one of the crew left, Stewardess.
00:37:45I'll need her with the passengers.
00:37:46Then get someone else.
00:37:48Well, the fewer people know about this, the better.
00:37:49Mrs. Stryker, you better stay with your husband.
00:37:51But, Joe, I'm so sick.
00:37:52No, you can do more here. I'll look after your boy.
00:37:55He's right, Ellen.
00:37:57Get in this seat and strap yourself in, will you?
00:37:59Ted, I don't know anything about all this.
00:38:02We're starting even.
00:38:03I'm going back now.
00:38:04Well, Stewardess, you must have watched the pilots a lot.
00:38:08Do you know how the radio works?
00:38:09They've added a lot of gizmos since I did any flying.
00:38:13It's the panel down here they use. I know that.
00:38:17Where's the VHF?
00:38:19They do something with that thing up there.
00:38:22That's the frequency selected. We'd better leave that where it is.
00:38:25Oh, but they do something with a little knob.
00:38:28Oh, that's it. Transmit.
00:38:30This is flight 714, isn't it?
00:38:32Yes.
00:38:33I'd better go help the doctor.
00:38:36Mr. Stryker?
00:38:37Yes.
00:38:38Good luck.
00:38:39Thanks.
00:38:41Ellen, you'd better put on that other headset.
00:38:45I'm not going to try to kid you, Ellen.
00:38:47This is going to be tough.
00:38:49So if you want to go back with the others...
00:38:53I'll stay.
00:38:55All right.
00:38:56Let's see. What do I do now?
00:38:58I'll call Mayday, I guess.
00:39:00What does that mean?
00:39:01That's a pilot's call for help when he's up against it.
00:39:04It takes precedence over anything else.
00:39:08Here goes.
00:39:10Mayday, Mayday, Mayday.
00:39:13This is Cross-Canada Charter. Flight... Flight 714, in distress.
00:39:19Come in, anyone.
00:39:21714, this is Calgary radio. Pass your message.
00:39:24Calgary to all stations. 714, called Mayday. Frequency 126.7. Now closed to all other traffic.
00:39:30My name is Ted Stryker. I'm a passenger on this airplane.
00:39:34Correction.
00:39:35I was a passenger.
00:39:37Where are the pilots?
00:39:38Both pilots are seriously ill.
00:39:4080.
00:39:41Vancouver, this is Calgary.
00:39:42We're getting a Mayday from 714.
00:39:43It's coming in now.
00:39:44Right.
00:39:45Winnipeg, are you on the line?
00:39:46714, called Mayday.
00:39:47No details yet. Get Ballard.
00:39:49Hold, please.
00:39:50714, called Mayday.
00:39:51Standby.
00:39:52714, called Mayday.
00:39:53714, called Mayday.
00:39:55Clear everything and hold all traffic.
00:39:56Right.
00:39:57All my flying has been done in single-engine fighters.
00:40:02And also, I haven't done any flying for 10 years.
00:40:04So what you'd better do is get someone on this radio who can give me instructions on flying this plane and landing it.
00:40:20That's the story.
00:40:21It's your move down there.
00:40:27I want to take a bet.
00:40:28That stirred up some excitement.
00:40:30Calgary 2714, stand by, please.
00:40:33Okay.
00:40:36I guess I'd better get myself oriented.
00:40:55Tell Calgary to acknowledge and have him stand by.
00:40:57Tell him we're getting help, we'd be on the air with him as soon as we can.
00:40:59Winnipeg on the wire, Harry.
00:41:01Ballard says he'd know something about this man striker.
00:41:04Burdick here.
00:41:09We'll do everything we can.
00:41:11Yes, I understand.
00:41:14Get every piece of emergency equipment you can reach.
00:41:16Alert it every mile of the way from here to the mountains.
00:41:18And I want every light you can get poured on that field.
00:41:20We might try praying a little too.
00:41:22They're gonna need it.
00:41:23Get me Captain Trello.
00:41:24Be clear what this man's strike on the war ballot tells me.
00:41:26Knows him inside out.
00:41:27We've got to have him.
00:41:28Then get me my office.
00:41:29How about some coffee, Johnny?
00:41:31Strong.
00:41:32We're office line four.
00:41:35Is that you, Max?
00:41:36I want a complete cockpit diagram for a DC-4 and a pre-landing flight check.
00:41:40I'm in the dispatch office and I want him over here fast.
00:41:43Right.
00:41:46Yeah?
00:41:47The last ETA we had was 02-15, local time.
00:41:50We'll want all air traffic cleared from this area.
00:41:52This guy doing the flying's had no airline experience at all.
00:41:55He'll be a menace to himself and everything else in the air.
00:41:59All right.
00:42:00Let's work for that.
00:42:01I'll call you if there's a change in time.
00:42:03It's gonna be a late night.
00:42:05Harry, Captain Trello is not in.
00:42:06I have his babysitter off.
00:42:07Okay.
00:42:08Get a police car and pick him up as soon as I locate him.
00:42:11This is the operations manager at the airport.
00:42:13Now, this is very important.
00:42:14Do you know where Captain Trello was going this evening?
00:42:17Why, just leave.
00:42:18I can't hear you.
00:42:20Can you please tell me where Captain Trello was going this evening?
00:42:24Just a minute.
00:42:25What did you want?
00:42:37Please.
00:42:38This is urgent.
00:42:39Where is Captain Trello?
00:42:40Uh, I think they said they were going to the Hotel Vancouver.
00:42:46Yeah.
00:42:47Uh, the Panorama Roof.
00:42:50Sure.
00:42:51Bye.
00:42:52Oh, yeah!
00:42:55What's the matter with them down there?
00:42:59Calgary, this is 714.
00:43:01Have you any message for me yet?
00:43:02Go ahead.
00:43:03Stand by, 714.
00:43:04Vancouver is doing everything possible.
00:43:06We'll be calling you very shortly.
00:43:08Okay.
00:43:11Look, Ellen.
00:43:12In a little while, I'm gonna be pretty busy in here.
00:43:14You'd better take over the radio from here in.
00:43:17How will I know what to do?
00:43:19There's nothing to it.
00:43:20Just take that microphone up there.
00:43:22That's the one.
00:43:23Push that button on the side when you're ready to talk.
00:43:26I'll tell you what to say.
00:43:28Chief, this is Cross Canada Dispatcher.
00:43:30We have an emergency on Flight 714 due here at 0215 local time.
00:43:34Maybe a crash landing.
00:43:35Stand by with everything you've got.
00:43:36And alert the Air Force, too.
00:43:38And will you call the city fire department?
00:43:40They may want to move equipment into the area.
00:43:42Right.
00:43:43Got city police?
00:43:44On your line now.
00:43:45This is Cross Canada Charter.
00:43:46Who is this police?
00:43:48Oh, Inspector.
00:43:49We're in bad trouble.
00:43:51No.
00:43:52No.
00:43:53Yes, sir.
00:43:54Yes, sir.
00:43:55No.
00:43:56No.
00:43:57No.
00:43:58By the way.
00:43:59No.
00:44:00No.
00:44:01No.
00:44:02I was in trouble.
00:44:03No.
00:44:05No.
00:44:06No.
00:44:07No.
00:44:08No.
00:44:09No.
00:44:10No.
00:44:13No.
00:44:14No.
00:44:15No.
00:44:16No.
00:44:17No.
00:44:19Have you told the brass yet?
00:44:34I've got a call in to Montreal now.
00:44:36I'm not going to like this.
00:44:37Well, that'll be a real help, won't it?
00:44:39We've got to get a statement to the press.
00:44:41Better get Cliff Howard here to handle it.
00:44:42Okay, and the boss on the line now, number three.
00:44:49No, sir, he isn't qualified.
00:44:59But I've got our senior captain coming in.
00:45:01He flew a striker in the war.
00:45:03Of course, it's a terrible risk, but can you think of something better?
00:45:07No, I haven't given any statement to the press.
00:45:09Howard's coming in for that.
00:45:10Harry?
00:45:12The ETA is 0215 Pacific Time.
00:45:16I've got a lot to do, sir.
00:45:18I'd better get on with it.
00:45:19I'll call you as soon as I know anything more.
00:45:21Bye.
00:45:23Well, that's the whole story, Martin.
00:45:24Everything we know.
00:45:26All right, Harry, let's face a few facts.
00:45:28As you know, I flew with this man striker during the war.
00:45:31What you don't know is,
00:45:32it doesn't make my job any easier here tonight.
00:45:35Frankly, I think you'd be a lot better off
00:45:38if you got somebody else who doesn't know him at all.
00:45:39I don't think that has anything to do with it.
00:45:41It has everything to do with it.
00:45:43In the first place, I think it's a mistake
00:45:44if he knows that I'm the man who's talking to men.
00:45:46He'll have a million things in his mind
00:45:48without being reminded of those days
00:45:49when, well, when things weren't so good.
00:45:52Right now, things aren't so good.
00:45:53And why we're talking,
00:45:54there are 38 lives waiting on us for a decision.
00:45:56Let me tell you something.
00:45:58Ted Stryker was a cracked flight leader up to a point,
00:46:00but he was one of those men who,
00:46:02well, let's just say he felt too much inside.
00:46:05Maybe you know the kind.
00:46:06Ate his heart out over every name on a casualty list.
00:46:09Well, what's wrong with that?
00:46:11I'll tell you what's the matter with that.
00:46:12He went all to pieces on one particular mission.
00:46:16I've never felt there was the slightest excuse for it.
00:46:20The upshot of it all was that everything turned sour.
00:46:23He left some mighty fine men behind him.
00:46:26Now, I may be wrong.
00:46:27I hope I am.
00:46:28But my feeling is that when the going gets really rough
00:46:30upstairs tonight,
00:46:32Ted Stryker's gonna fold up.
00:46:34That's all I can tell you.
00:46:35Look, Martin,
00:46:35I want you to get on the horn and talk this guy down,
00:46:38no matter what you think.
00:46:40Now, you're gonna have to let him get the feel
00:46:41of this airplane on the way.
00:46:42You'll have to give him a landing check.
00:46:43You'll have to talk him onto the approach.
00:46:45And so, help me,
00:46:46you'll have to talk him right down to the ground.
00:46:49All right, Burdick.
00:46:50I just want you to know what we have to contend with.
00:46:54Very well, it's settled.
00:46:57Who's got the cigarettes?
00:46:58Here.
00:47:02Thanks.
00:47:03Yeah.
00:47:04Looks like I picked a wrong week to quit smoking.
00:47:07All right, let's get started.
00:47:09Can you work 714 direct now?
00:47:11Yeah, reception's good.
00:47:12We can take over anytime.
00:47:13Okay.
00:47:14Calgary Radio, Vancouver Radio.
00:47:16We'll work 714 ourselves now.
00:47:20714, this is Calgary Radio.
00:47:22Vancouver Radio is taking over now
00:47:24and will work you direct.
00:47:26Keep your transmitter at the same frequency.
00:47:29714, good luck.
00:47:31Over.
00:47:32Thanks, Calgary.
00:47:33714, standing by for Vancouver.
00:47:36The one hope we have is to build this man up.
00:47:39I've got to give him all the confidence I can,
00:47:41along with the technical end of it.
00:47:43He keeps calm, cool.
00:47:45That's what I tell him, we'll bring that plane in.
00:47:47But above all else,
00:47:49I don't want him to know that
00:47:50I'm as full of doubts as I got to admit I am.
00:47:53All right, let's go.
00:47:54Put Striker on the speaker.
00:47:56Okay.
00:47:57You can use that hand, Mike, there.
00:47:59Flight 714, this is Vancouver.
00:48:01Can you read?
00:48:01Go ahead.
00:48:03Here they are.
00:48:03I'll talk to them first.
00:48:05Yes, Vancouver.
00:48:06We read you.
00:48:07Go ahead, please.
00:48:08Three cabinets, all yours.
00:48:12Hello, Flight 714, this is Vancouver.
00:48:16Striker?
00:48:17Striker, this is Captain Martin Trelevin speaking.
00:48:20If you read me, go ahead.
00:48:21Yes, Captain Trelevin.
00:48:26I read you loud and clear.
00:48:28Go ahead.
00:48:29All right, it's obvious you remember me.
00:48:32So what do you say you and I just forget about everything
00:48:33except what we have to do now?
00:48:35You and I are going to bring this plane in together.
00:48:38Before we start, I'd like to say something.
00:48:41I know that right now things must look pretty rough up there.
00:48:43But if you do what I tell you, and when I tell you to do it,
00:48:47there's no reason you can't bring that plane in.
00:48:50Let's not kid each other, Trelevin.
00:48:52You know I've never flown a bucket like this.
00:48:54I haven't been at the controls for over 10 years.
00:48:57I'm going to need all the luck there is, if that's all.
00:49:00All right, Striker, now you listen to me and you listen close.
00:49:03You begin thinking that way and we're finished before we start.
00:49:07Flying is no different than riding a bicycle.
00:49:09It just happens to be something you'll never forget.
00:49:12Now, are you still an automatic pilot?
00:49:14Go ahead.
00:49:15Yes, we're still an automatic pilot.
00:49:17Very well.
00:49:19You just make yourself comfortable up there.
00:49:21In a minute, I'd like you to disengage the automatic pilot
00:49:23and begin to get the feel of the controls.
00:49:26But first, let me tell you,
00:49:27the controls will feel very heavy compared with the fighter.
00:49:30Don't worry about that.
00:49:31It's perfectly normal.
00:49:32You must watch your airspeed closely.
00:49:34Don't let it fall below 120.
00:49:37Now, I know you recognize the importance of that,
00:49:39but I would like to repeat it.
00:49:40Under no circumstances must you let that airspeed
00:49:43fall below 120 miles per hour.
00:49:45Now, there's one other thing.
00:49:47Have you someone up there who can work the radio
00:49:48and leave you free for flying?
00:49:52Yes, I have a...
00:49:53a passenger here with me who will take over the radio.
00:50:01All right, I'm going to unlock the automatic pilot.
00:50:09The radio's all yours now.
00:50:17Keep your eye on that airspeed.
00:50:19Listen, I got a lot of work to do with this man,
00:50:20but we might as well start planning the approach
00:50:22and the landing while there's plenty of time.
00:50:24Get the chief radar operator up here, will you?
00:50:25Tell him I want to talk to him.
00:50:29Hello, Stryker.
00:50:31How are you making out?
00:50:32You got the feel of it yet?
00:50:33Tell him we're on manual now.
00:50:34Trying out some shallow turns.
00:50:43I should have asked you this before.
00:50:45What kind of weather you in up there?
00:50:48Rain.
00:50:49And a little ice.
00:50:51And a little ice.
00:50:53Start your de-icers working.
00:50:55The control is on the fuse panel at your left knee.
00:51:01De-icer's on.
00:51:04Tell him we're coming into some heavy clouds
00:51:06and we'll be on instruments.
00:51:11How does she handle now, Stryker?
00:51:13Sluggish.
00:51:15Like a wet sponge.
00:51:17Sluggish.
00:51:18Like a wet sponge.
00:51:19As I told you to begin with,
00:51:20that's perfectly natural
00:51:21because you're used to handling smaller airplanes.
00:51:23The radar chief's on his way up.
00:51:25Tell him to get the lead out.
00:51:26Hello, Stryker.
00:51:28Watch any violent movement of the controls
00:51:30like you used to make in Spitfires and Mustangs.
00:51:32If you do move the controls violently,
00:51:34you will overcorrect and be in trouble.
00:51:35Is that clear?
00:51:36Go ahead.
00:51:36Tell him I understand.
00:51:39Yes, Vancouver.
00:51:40He understands.
00:51:42Now I want you to try climbing.
00:51:44Leave your throttle the way it is.
00:51:46Bring your airplane to approach speed,
00:51:47which is 130.
00:51:49That should put you in a very gentle climb,
00:51:51but whatever else you do,
00:51:52watch that airspeed closely.
00:51:53The doctor will be here in a moment.
00:52:08See if we've leveled out again.
00:52:10He'll be all right now.
00:52:15How are you feeling now?
00:52:16I feel terrible.
00:52:18I didn't need those pills to make me sick.
00:52:20And never mind tonight's dinner.
00:52:21Well, right now, I'm working on yesterday's breakfast.
00:52:24Would you keep him covered, Mrs. Summers?
00:52:28Hi, Joey. How's the boy?
00:52:30Stomach still hurting?
00:52:32Say, you know, Patty's been asking about you. Patty.
00:52:35Hey, Patty.
00:52:37There he is. Hiya, Patty.
00:52:39Say, you know, he doesn't look so good either.
00:52:42Patty, let me see your tongue. Now, come on. Let me see your tongue.
00:52:45Come on, now.
00:52:47Ooh, you know, I've seen it look better.
00:52:49Patty, why don't you stay right here with Joey,
00:52:52and he'll take good care of you.
00:52:54Okay. Okay.
00:52:56There you are.
00:52:57I'll just take you off here, and you take good care of him, Joey.
00:53:01Put him right in there.
00:53:03Oh, that's good. Now, lift your hand up there,
00:53:05and I'll show you how to do it.
00:53:07Hey, how are you, Patty? Fine.
00:53:10Okay, you two try to get some sleep, all right?
00:53:13We'll be there before you know it.
00:53:16Okay, Joey.
00:53:19As soon as he shows up in your radar,
00:53:21you can feed me the information, and I'll relay it.
00:53:23How about the final approach?
00:53:24We'll handle that the same way.
00:53:26As soon as you have him in the scope,
00:53:27and he's steady on the course,
00:53:28we'll move to the tower.
00:53:29You report up there,
00:53:30we'll decide on the runway,
00:53:31and plan the final approach.
00:53:32Understood?
00:53:33Yes, sir.
00:53:34Well, we're on top of the clouds at 11,000 feet. Leveled off.
00:53:47We're now on top of the clouds at 11,000 feet, and we are leveled off.
00:53:52What is your present heading, Striker?
00:53:56Well, and the compass is still about 2-9-0.
00:53:59The compass is still at 2-9-0.
00:54:02All right, try to stay on that heading.
00:54:04You may be a few miles off course,
00:54:06but we can correct that easily when you get in radar range.
00:54:09Right now, I want you to feel how the ship handles at lower speeds
00:54:12when the flaps and the gear are down.
00:54:14But don't do anything until I give you the word.
00:54:16Is that understood? Go ahead.
00:54:17Yes, we understand, Ben.
00:54:26All right, Striker.
00:54:27The first thing is to throttle back slightly,
00:54:29get your airspeed steady at 120,
00:54:31and then tell me when you're ready.
00:54:33Keep your fingers crossed.
00:54:37Ellen, what's the airspeed?
00:54:38You'll have to call it off when we land,
00:54:39so you may as well start practicing now.
00:54:41140, 135, 130, 125, 120.
00:54:46120, 115, 110.
00:54:49That's too low. He's at 120.
00:54:51I know. I know what?
00:54:56115, 120, 125, 120.
00:55:07Steady at 120.
00:55:09Tell them.
00:55:12Hello.
00:55:13Our airspeed is now steady at 120.
00:55:15Now, Striker, I want you to put down 20 degrees of flap.
00:55:19Be careful not to make it any more.
00:55:21The flap handle is on the lower right-hand side of the control pedestal.
00:55:2420 degrees will be moving the handle down to the second notch.
00:55:28You'll have to put the flaps down, Ellen.
00:55:30There's the handle there.
00:55:31Can you see the flap indicator, Striker?
00:55:33It's near the center of the main panel.
00:55:35There's the indicator he's talking about.
00:55:37When I tell you, put the handle down two notches and watch that indicator.
00:55:41All right.
00:55:42Tell him we're going to put the flaps down now.
00:55:46We're going to put the flaps down now.
00:55:48Okay, 714. Go ahead with your flaps.
00:55:51Then, when they're down, get your airspeed steady at 120,
00:55:55adjust your trim, and call me once again.
00:55:5720 degrees of flap, Ellen.
00:55:59All right.
00:56:09The flaps are down, and the airspeed is steady at 120.
00:56:13All right, Striker.
00:56:14The next thing is to drop your gear,
00:56:15and then you'll have the feel of the ship as it'll be when you're landing.
00:56:18Are you still in level flight?
00:56:20By any remote chance.
00:56:22More or less.
00:56:30Ask him about prop controls and the mixture.
00:56:33Vancouver.
00:56:35What about prop controls and the mixture?
00:56:38At least he's thinking, anyway.
00:56:41Never mind that for the time being, Striker.
00:56:43Just concentrate on holding that airspeed steady with your flaps and gear down.
00:56:47Put the gear down.
00:56:48Okay, Ellen.
00:56:49Put the gear down.
00:56:51Call for the airspeed.
00:57:07Okay, Striker.
00:57:08Your gear should be down by now.
00:57:10Look for three green lights to show you that it's locked.
00:57:12Also, there's a hydraulic pressure gauge just above the three green lights,
00:57:15and that needle should be in the green range.
00:57:17Three green lights.
00:57:21The pressure's up.
00:57:22Tell him the gear and the flaps are down.
00:57:24She's still handled like a wet sponge, only more so.
00:57:28The gear and the flaps are down now,
00:57:30but he says that she still handles like a wet sponge, only more so.
00:57:34You'll get used to that.
00:57:37Now I'm gonna give you instructions for holding your altitude and airspeed steady
00:57:40while you raise the landing gear and flaps.
00:57:42Then we'll run through the whole thing again.
00:57:44Again?
00:57:47Look, Trelevin.
00:57:48I'm giving you all I've got the first time.
00:57:50So don't expect me to sit up here and go through a lot of dry runs.
00:57:53Are you gonna bring that plane in alone, or could you still use a little help?
00:57:55He's up, Martin.
00:58:00All right, Stryker.
00:58:01Get a hold of yourself.
00:58:02We don't have long to go now.
00:58:07Sorry.
00:58:25Go!
00:58:55Ted! The speed! Look at the speed, Ted! We're falling!
00:59:02Ted, we're falling!
00:59:09Get the gear up! Get the gear up!
00:59:18Come out! Ted, come out!
00:59:25I've got to get out of here! I've got to get out of here!
00:59:32I've got to get out of here! I've got to get out of here!
00:59:37I've got to get out of here! I've got to get out of here!
00:59:43Look, he is my pilot.
00:59:50Now you know, Mr. Stryker is the only person aboard who can fly this plane.
00:59:55He was a pilot in the war, and we can all help him by not getting in a panic.
00:59:59Now, we all know there are dangers involved, but is there anyone here who'd like to take his place?
01:00:10They've faded out completely. Aren't you getting anything?
01:00:13714. 714.
01:00:26Hello, Vancouver?
01:00:29Vancouver!
01:00:31Ted, I can't get an answer. I think the radio is dead.
01:00:34You can't be dead.
01:00:36Hello! Vancouver!
01:00:38Vancouver, come in, please. This is flight 714.
01:00:46There's nothing.
01:00:47You better call the first officer's home and the stewardess's.
01:00:49Keep trying, will you?
01:00:51714.
01:00:53714.
01:00:55714.
01:00:56714.
01:00:57Are you getting anything yet?
01:00:58No.
01:00:59What are we going to do?
01:01:00Just keep trying.
01:01:01Hello, Vancouver.
01:01:02Come in, please.
01:01:03Hello.
01:01:04Come in, Vancouver, please.
01:01:05This is flight 714.
01:01:06This is flight 714.
01:01:07Get Captain Wilson's wife for me.
01:01:08You better call the first officer's home and the stewardess's.
01:01:09Keep trying, will you?
01:01:11714.
01:01:12714.
01:01:13714.
01:01:15Are you getting anything yet?
01:01:17No.
01:01:18What are we going to do?
01:01:19Just keep trying.
01:01:20Hello, Vancouver.
01:01:21Come in, please.
01:01:23Come in, please.
01:01:49Harry, they won't leave without a statement from you.
01:01:51You've got a runaway plane loose up there.
01:01:53That's what it comes down to, doesn't it?
01:01:54The fact is, this plane could crash anywhere in the city.
01:01:57Into homes, factories, anywhere.
01:01:58Isn't that true?
01:01:59Right now, we can't be sure of anything.
01:02:01We're doing everything we can.
01:02:21Versus,aku.
01:02:22Come in!
01:02:24Seven, one, four.
01:02:30Seven, one, four!
01:02:31The river, two, three, three, four and look at this.
01:02:35Repeating 714.
01:02:37This is Vancouver.
01:02:39Vancouver calling 714.
01:02:41Flight 714.
01:02:45Flight 714. Come in.
01:02:55Flight 714. This is Vancouver. Do you hear me?
01:02:59Come in, please.
01:03:01Vancouver. Vancouver. We're reading you again. Come in, please.
01:03:04What happened? Are you all right?
01:03:06We stalled. The radio went off, but we're all right now.
01:03:09We're climbing.
01:03:11All right, Striker. Here's what you must do next.
01:03:13Take a look at your fuel tank gauges. Give me their exact reading.
01:03:16Can't take much more of this.
01:03:18Johnny, how about some more coffee?
01:03:34Hello?
01:03:35Mrs. Wilson?
01:03:36Yes, this is Mrs. Wilson.
01:03:38This is John Arnold calling from the airport.
01:03:40There's some trouble on your husband's flight.
01:03:42We don't know yet how serious it is,
01:03:44but Harry Ballard thought you'd want to get down here right away.
01:03:46Yes, I'll be there right away.
01:03:48Captain Wilson hasn't come out of it at all. None of them have.
01:03:54And Joey's worse.
01:03:56And Joey's worse.
01:04:00Captain Wilson hasn't come out of it at all, none of them have, and Joey's words.
01:04:22Vancouver. We've got to start down now. Not just yet. We'll have you on radar any second now.
01:04:30I don't understand it. He should have been in a range ten minutes ago.
01:04:36Don't forget, he lost a lot of time. We don't know how far off course he went. Radar, you getting anything?
01:04:42Hold it. Hold it a minute. This may be something coming up.
01:04:45Yeah, I have him now. He's ten miles south of course.
01:04:51Tell him to turn right onto a heading of 3-0-5.
01:04:56Nice work. Now, Stryker, we have you on radar now. You're off course ten miles to the south.
01:05:02Please turn right onto a new heading of 3-0-5. Then when you're ready, start losing altitude.
01:05:08Tell him we're on the new course and ready now to lose altitude.
01:05:24Hello, Vancouver. We're now on the new course and ready to lose altitude.
01:05:28All right. Trattle back slightly. But hold your airspeed steady until you're losing altitude at 100 feet a minute.
01:05:34Watch your instruments closely. You'll have to trust them all the way.
01:05:38How long you figure before the landing?
01:05:40I don't know. What luck about. I'll say 30 minutes.
01:05:44Harry, call the tower, will you? Tell him we may need a double emergency crew on this one.
01:05:47Make sure those hospital units are standing by.
01:05:49All right. Get me to the fire department and city police.
01:06:01Also, I want all traffic blocked off from this airport.
01:06:04Now, here are the runways. We have apartment buildings here, there and there.
01:06:10Actually, what we'll have to do is alert the entire area.
01:06:13So contact all fire departments, emergency equipment, the works.
01:06:16There's no telling where this plane might come down.
01:06:31Here are the banner sheets. We're ready to roll either way.
01:06:40Let's go.
01:06:42Ted, I'd like to go back and see Joy again for just a minute.
01:06:44All right. This would be a good time. She's holding fairly steady right now.
01:07:03Doctor. How is he?
01:07:06I won't deceive you, Mrs. Stryker. We're running out of time.
01:07:09How soon do you think we'll be landing?
01:07:11Well, I really don't know, but we're getting close.
01:07:13Well, I better go and talk to your husband.
01:07:22Please, God.
01:07:26Will the hospital equipment be at the airport?
01:07:27Yes, everything they've got.
01:07:29The captain wants to talk to the stewardess.
01:07:31They want to talk to the stewardess.
01:07:32I'll get off.
01:07:34Excuse me.
01:07:36All right.
01:07:37714, stand by.
01:07:40How is he?
01:07:41Still unconscious.
01:07:43The doctor says everybody...
01:07:45I know. He told me.
01:07:47Ellen, we're going to make it.
01:07:51You've got to believe that.
01:07:56They want to talk to your stewardess. There's a headset there.
01:07:58I've got it.
01:08:00They've got the stewardess.
01:08:01All right. What's the girl's name?
01:08:02Janet Turner.
01:08:03How are you, Janet?
01:08:05This is Captain Drew Levin here.
01:08:07Janet, when we make this landing, I want you to use emergency crash procedures for protection of passengers. Understand?
01:08:13Tell him I understand.
01:08:15Yes, she understands.
01:08:17That's fine.
01:08:18Just before the landing, I'll ask the pilot to ring the emergency bell.
01:08:21Now, the button for that bell is right over the co-pilot's seat.
01:08:24There it is.
01:08:25You see it, Ellen?
01:08:26Remember it.
01:08:27That'll be your warning for final precautions.
01:08:29Oh, stewardess.
01:08:30Yes.
01:08:31Are the pilots strapped to seats?
01:08:32Yes.
01:08:33Good luck back there.
01:08:34We'll be ready.
01:08:36We'll be ready.
01:08:45Twenty-nine miles from the field.
01:08:48Turn left onto three zero zero.
01:08:52All right, Straker.
01:08:53Change your heading slightly.
01:08:54Turn left onto three zero zero.
01:08:56What is your altitude?
01:08:57Altitude is 2,500.
01:09:00Bad news.
01:09:01The fog's getting thicker.
01:09:02There's nothing we can do about that.
01:09:04Tell the tower to light up.
01:09:05Put on everything they've got.
01:09:07We'll be coming up there in a minute.
01:09:08I'll want their radio on the same frequency as this.
01:09:10Straker won't have time to fool around changing channels.
01:09:12Right.
01:09:18Oh!
01:09:19Listen, you!
01:09:20You can follow me.
01:09:21I'm trying to help.
01:09:22I won't let me go!
01:09:23All right.
01:09:24Leave her to people.
01:09:25All right.
01:09:26Now listen to me.
01:09:27Listen!
01:09:28Calm down.
01:09:29Relax.
01:09:31Come on now.
01:09:32Oh, Tony, I'm all right.
01:09:33It's just everything at once.
01:09:34Here.
01:09:35Drink this.
01:09:36Come on.
01:09:37Drink it.
01:09:38Remind me never to travel this airline again.
01:09:39I have terrible coffee.
01:09:40I'll get you the best coffee in Vancouver just as soon as we land.
01:09:41Tony, I'm sorry about what I said to you before.
01:09:42I forget it.
01:09:43You know, honestly, I couldn't have done it without you.
01:09:44You know, I'd like it to go on that way for at least the next hundred years.
01:09:47Oh, me too.
01:09:48Oh, me too.
01:09:49Stryker, you are now approximately nine minutes from the airport.
01:09:50Are you ready to begin your final descent?
01:09:51Tell him we're on top of the overcast.
01:09:52Nothing but fog below.
01:09:53Not a break in it anywhere.
01:09:54Vancouver.
01:09:55We're on top of the overcast.
01:09:56There's not a break in it anywhere.
01:09:57Vancouver.
01:09:58We're on top of the overcast.
01:09:59There's not a break in it anywhere.
01:10:00Now, this would be a tough landing for anybody to make.
01:10:01Maybe if we hold them off for a bit.
01:10:02We'll get a break in the weather.
01:10:03All right, Stryker, you better stay up there for a bit.
01:10:04Keep circling.
01:10:06I'm sorry.
01:10:07Granted.
01:10:08You're going to find names.
01:10:09Go to my friend.
01:10:10I just like it.
01:10:11You mean the tombs ofым or a little old?
01:10:12How to find a bird.
01:10:13I'm sorry.
01:10:14No, I'm sorry.
01:10:15I'm sorry.
01:10:16I was like, Larry.
01:10:17I was like, I'm not sure.
01:10:18How to talk to you about that?
01:10:19I was going to have to know.
01:10:20Well, I'm sorry.
01:10:21I was kind of a big deal.
01:10:22Not a big deal.
01:10:23I'm sorry.
01:10:24I got to be careful.
01:10:25All right, Stryker, you better stay up there for a bit, keep circling.
01:10:29We got everything else out of the air so you won't have too much trouble.
01:10:32As soon as the fog lifts, we'll bring you in.
01:10:35I'll take it out.
01:10:37No dice, Vancouver. I'm coming straight in now.
01:10:40Dr. Baird says the sick people are in critical condition and every minute counts.
01:10:44Don't be a fool, Stryker. You know what a landing like this means.
01:10:47You more than anybody.
01:10:50That's right. But we've got to come in.
01:10:53But he can't. Tell him he's got to stay up there.
01:10:56Let's face it, Harry, there's nothing we can do about it.
01:10:59All right, Stryker, level off at 2,000 feet and wait for instructions.
01:11:02I'm going to the tower now so you won't hear from me for a bit.
01:11:05We'll decide on the runway to use it at the last minute so you can land into the wind.
01:11:08But he can't bring it down in this soup. It's 100 to 1 anyway.
01:11:11I know, I know, but it's his ship now, his command.
01:11:14Stand by, Stryker, I'm going to the tower. And good luck.
01:11:18We're on our way up now.
01:11:23We're on our way up now.
01:11:25We're on our way up now.
01:11:26Runway nine. It's the longest and pretty well into the wind.
01:11:29Radar.
01:11:30Yes, Captain.
01:11:31This is the way we'll handle it.
01:11:32Right now he's here.
01:11:33I'll turn him so he begins to make a wide right-hand circle at the same time bring him down to a thousand feet.
01:11:38I'll start the pre-landing check here then have him make a slow turn on to final. Is that clear?
01:11:53Yeah.
01:11:54The phone hooked up to radar.
01:11:55Right there, sir.
01:11:56How do I talk to the field?
01:11:57I'll just flip that speaker on, sir.
01:12:02Tower to all emergency vehicles. Runway is nine.
01:12:08Airport tenders take positions number one and two. Civil equipment number three.
01:12:13Air force positions number four and five. All ambulances to position three.
01:12:18714. This is Trelevin and Vancouver Tower. Are you ready to line up for the landing?
01:12:23Okay, Vancouver. We're ready.
01:12:25Harry.
01:12:27Your cigarette now?
01:12:28Joe. I thought you'd like to know the latest.
01:12:32Now, your husband and the others are alive but unconscious.
01:12:36Now, there's a good chance we can save them if the striker can get this plane down in time.
01:12:39That isn't really much of a chance, is it?
01:12:42It's the only one we've got.
01:12:44Eight miles. Turn right to heading 080.
01:12:48Striker, after this message, do not acknowledge any further transmissions unless you want to ask a question.
01:12:53You are now eight miles from the airport. Turn right to a heading of 080. Throttle back slightly and begin to lose altitude to 1,000 feet.
01:13:01I just want to tell you both good luck. I'll keep your son with me.
01:13:06Thanks, Doctor.
01:13:07All right.
01:13:08Hold your airspeed steady at 120. Tell him we're at 1,000 feet and leveling off.
01:13:13We're now at 1,000 feet and leveling off.
01:13:16Now, set your mixture controls and order rich. That is, in the top position.
01:13:20Close four levers, Ellen. Pull them all the way up.
01:13:26All right, striker, put down 20 degrees of flap.
01:13:2920 degrees of flap.
01:13:30When your flaps are down, retrim for level flight.
01:13:37He's all over the place. 900 feet up to 1,300 feet.
01:13:49Watch your altitude, Striker. It's too erratic. Try to hold steady at 1,000 feet.
01:13:53Any break in the fog up there?
01:13:58No, nothing yet. I can't see a thing.
01:14:05Keep checking those instruments. You'll have to trust them all the way.
01:14:09Close up. Stay in formation. Target's just ahead.
01:14:26Target should be clear if you go in low enough. You'll have to decide.
01:14:39We're too low, Captain. We're too low.
01:14:41Striker. Striker, can you hear me? You've got to keep her up. Keep her up.
01:14:46Striker, get your altitude back. You need 1,000 feet.
01:14:51He's dropping off fast. Almost 700.
01:14:53Striker, get back to 1,000 feet.
01:14:58Captain, he's below 700 now, and he's still going down.
01:15:01Striker, you can't come straight in. You've got enough fuel left for two hours flying.
01:15:05You've got to stay up there till we get a break in the weather.
01:15:08I'll take it, Ellen.
01:15:10Listen, Trelevin. I'm coming in. Do you hear me?
01:15:12I'm coming in right now.
01:15:14We have people up here, including my own son, who'll die in less than one hour.
01:15:17Never mind two.
01:15:18I may bend your precious airplane, but I'll bring it down.
01:15:21Now get on with the landing check.
01:15:23I'm putting the gear down now.
01:15:35Ted.
01:15:36Yes?
01:15:37I just wanted you to know now.
01:15:40I'm very proud.
01:15:44Tell him the gear is down, and we're ready to land.
01:15:47The gear is now down, and we're ready to land.
01:15:50He may not be able to fly, but he's sure got guts.
01:15:53Keep your heading steady on zero, nine, zero.
01:15:58Increase your throttle setting slightly to hold your airspeed.
01:16:02Advance your prop control so that you're getting a reading of 2250 RPM on each engine.
01:16:082250 RPM.
01:16:10He's still dropping.
01:16:12Just under 600.
01:16:18550.
01:16:20500.
01:16:21Striker, you're too low.
01:16:23Still on 140.
01:16:25Altitude steady at 500.
01:16:27He's right on the heading.
01:16:29All right, he's on final now.
01:16:31Put out all the runway lights except number nine.
01:16:40Turn on your landing light, Striker.
01:16:41Can you find the switch?
01:16:50All right, now listen carefully.
01:16:51You should be able to see the runway at 300 feet.
01:16:53Aim to touch down a third of the way along.
01:16:54There's a slight crosswind from the right to the left.
01:16:55So be ready for it.
01:16:56If you land too fast, use your emergency brakes.
01:16:57The red handle is right in front of you.
01:16:58If that doesn't stop, you'll cut the four ignition switches over the co-pilot's head.
01:17:02You see them, Ellen?
01:17:03If I want them off, it'll be in a hurry.
01:17:04So don't waste any time about it.
01:17:05I'm going to take a break.
01:17:06All right, now listen carefully.
01:17:07You should be able to see the runway at 300 feet.
01:17:08Aim to touch down a third of the way along.
01:17:09There's a slight crosswind from the right, so be ready for it.
01:17:10If you land too fast, use your emergency brakes.
01:17:11The red handle is right in front of you.
01:17:12If that doesn't stop, you'll cut the four ignition switches over the co-pilot's head.
01:17:15You see them, Ellen?
01:17:16If I want them off, it'll be in a hurry.
01:17:17So don't waste any time about it.
01:17:18All right.
01:17:19Now, Stryker, hold your present heading.
01:17:20Put down full flap.
01:17:21Bring your airspeed back to 110.
01:17:22Adjust your trim and start easing her down.
01:17:23Everything ready on the field?
01:17:24As ready as we'll ever be.
01:17:25Give me altitude and speed.
01:17:26400 feet.
01:17:27Speed 115.
01:17:28315.
01:17:29Speed 110.
01:17:30Do you see us now?
01:17:31You should be able to see the field now.
01:17:33All right.
01:17:34All right.
01:17:35All right.
01:17:36All right.
01:17:37All right.
01:17:38All right.
01:17:39All right.
01:17:40All right.
01:17:41All right.
01:17:42Will you see us now?
01:17:43You should be able to see the field now.
01:18:12There he is.
01:18:22Dragger, you're coming in too fast.
01:18:24I know, I know. Keep watching.
01:18:26300, speed 125.
01:18:28300, speed 130.
01:18:30Dragger, now listen to me.
01:18:32You're coming down too fast.
01:18:42Sound your alarm bell now.
01:18:48Oh, everybody get in crash position.
01:18:53Put your heads down. Everybody put your heads down.
01:18:57Now let down. Easy.
01:19:05Watch your nose. It's too low. You're coming in too hot.
01:19:08Remember your brakes and switches. Get ready to flare it up.
01:19:12You're coming in too fast.
01:19:17Now these are down. Down.
01:19:22Lift the nose. Travel back.
01:19:28The brakes. Pull that right handle.
01:19:30The brakes.
01:19:40Get the switcher.
01:19:44Hold her steady.
01:20:00Everything's all right back here, thanks to you.
01:20:13And we're in time.
01:20:18Spreaker, Spreaker, you all right?
01:20:23Okay.
01:20:24Ted, Ted, that was probably the lousiest landing in the history of this airport.
01:20:30But some of us here, particularly me, would like to buy you a drink and shake your hand.
01:20:39We're coming over.
01:21:00God bless.
01:21:02God bless.
