00:00It has been widely speculated what would happen with Conor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers,
00:06but I don't think anyone had this in mind. Let's talk about a gigantic deal,
00:11but certainly not as gigantic as anyone would have expected with McDavid staying with the Oilers.
00:18It is a contract that a lot of people were speculating about, and no one came to this
00:30conclusion, as the Edmonton Oilers have signed Conor McDavid to a two-year contract worth $12.5
00:37million. I am stunned. I did not think that this was going to be the way that this would go. I had
00:47said on the radio out here in Calgary that I thought, I thought 20. Like, I thought that he
00:53would go out and set that number, and a lot of people saying, oh no, he's going to take a smaller
00:57number. He's going to take just a bit of a discount to help the team and help them grow and help them
01:03stay competitive. It's like, okay, I can hear that argument, so maybe. Maybe. But I don't think it's
01:08coming in under Kaprizov's number. Well, it did, and just, I can't believe it. I genuinely, especially
01:16after the Kaprizov deal came down, I can't believe that the best player in the world is taking this
01:25sort of a discount to stay with the Edmonton Oilers. Just certainly not the biggest part of
01:31this, but shoutouts to Kaprizov's team for getting that deal done before this contract came down,
01:37because, oh boy, that would be different, I think, if this went down and then Kaprizov still had to sign
01:44his contract. So, I, look, credit to McDavid, you know, we'll talk about what this means and
01:50everything like that, but this is someone who is obviously committed to winning, and contrary to
01:54what everyone would think, he is committed to winning in the city of Edmonton. And so, to do
01:58this, two years, $12.5 million, obviously there's a bit of show me here, and not, no one needs to be
02:06shown anything by McDavid. This is all Conor McDavid saying, look, you have two years, I guess now
02:11three. You have three years to figure this out. You have three years to make sure that
02:17I can be successful here, and to show me that I can be successful here in Edmonton. This is an
02:25incredible commitment to this organization. We'll talk about what it means for all the different
02:30parties. I will just say, obviously no inside information here or anything, the NHLPA has to be
02:37pissed, right? Like, this is something that could set the market. When you are talking about
02:42a time where the NHL is growing, right? They are on ESPN, they're on the Turner Networks down in the
02:49States. The Four Nations really revitalized a lot of things. The postseason was excellent again. Like,
02:55there's a lot of attention on this sport, and because of that and a gigantic TV deal in Canada,
03:00the salary cap is going up, and it's going to be going up for a while. And you take a discount.
03:09Like, for him, competitive advantage, all those things, fantastic, love it, great for you, fantastic.
03:15But from the PA's perspective, we have a time of massive growth, which is a time for the players
03:22to be able to reset their contracts or reset where this is, like where the bar is for them. And for
03:30the best player in the world to take what would be under market value for him, that has to be
03:36frustrating for the NHLPA. So again, there are bigger things here, Oilers-wise, McDavid-wise,
03:42all of that. But for the PA, when you're coming up on a potentially historic time for free agency with
03:48some of the players that were available, and he takes a contract less than Kaprizov, who's a very
03:54good hockey player, but top 15 player, and he's going to be making almost $5 million a year less
04:01than that. If I'm the NHLPA, it is just constant messaging to McDavid's group being like, um, so hey,
04:11what the fuck? What, what, what? What are we doing here? So I'm, I'm quite surprised at that.
04:18I thought the PA would have at least been like, look, cool, great. Can we get it to 15 at least?
04:24Um, so I, I think they would be frustrated by that for sure. On the Oilers side of this,
04:29they have to win in this time. There are, there is no question, you can't use any more excuses,
04:35right? That this is probably the most player-friendly deal, sorry, this is probably the most team-friendly
04:43deal in the history of the National Hockey League. So you now have to win. There are, that you can't
04:50use any other excuse. This now needs to end. In the next three years, you need to have Connor McDavid's
04:59name engraved on that Stanley Cup because of what you were just able to accomplish with this. You have
05:06the best player in the world coming in at significantly below market value while the salary
05:15cap is going to be going up. So I don't want to hear about salary cap problems. I don't want to hear
05:22about other tax issues out in other States. I don't want to hear about anything else other than,
05:29did you win the Stanley Cup or did you not? That is the only bar that is acceptable now for the
05:35Oilers. Is that fair? Probably not. It's a very difficult thing to win. That's why they put your
05:40name in it. If you do get the victory, but that is where they are at now. You have the best player in
05:47the world on a team-friendly deal. You have probably the second or third best player in the world also on
05:53your team. Figure it out. Figure it out. No more excuse. There shouldn't have been any excuses before
06:00this. It shouldn't take McDavid taking this type of a contract to help you win, but he's bailing you
06:07out again. So take advantage of it. If you don't, incredible failure. It has been. Look, I understand
06:15the guy from Calgary calling Edmonton a failure is going to make some people feel a certain kind of way,
06:21but for that guy to, he's been to the Stanley Cup now back-to-back years, right? So that at least
06:27helps a little bit, but for that guy to have never won it and for it to have taken this long to get to
06:33this point is a failure of the organization. And there have been multiple people involved in that.
06:38I understand it. Again, don't care. You have been gifted this in a couple of different ways and
06:45haven't been able to fully take advantage of it until the last couple of years. So now zero excuses
06:52for the Edmonton Oilers to do anything but win a championship. And now look, they're going to be in
06:59a spot to do that. They have a couple of rough ones on there, no doubt. But to now have McDavid at 12
07:05and a half million dollars, you have Hyman, who's a 50 goal scorer. We can discuss the merits of that,
07:11but you have Hyman, who's a 50 goal scorer at five and a half per season. Along with those two guys,
07:17you should be able to put a competent NHL franchise around that and one that gets you to the Stanley
07:24Cup. So again, all the excuses are now gone for the Edmonton Oilers. And taking a look here
07:31at how these guys set up, let's take a look at the cap situation from Puckpedia.
07:37So obviously, like at the top, those are big numbers. But the fact that you get Dreisaitl and
07:43McDavid at $26.5 million a season kind of feels like a bargain, doesn't it? When you have the two
07:50of the top three players in the world doing that. Zach Hyman, obviously, we're dealing with some
07:54injury problems right now. But at $5.5 million, guy who scored 50 before, is he perennial 50 goal
08:00scorer? He is not. But he's certainly, I think, has outplayed $5.5 million. That Frederick one is a
08:08bad contract. And this is where you run into the issues with this team and why McDavid is bailing
08:14them out. It is not just McDavid bailing them out of just any kind of cap situation. But when we go
08:20over to the blue line, obviously, the big one that stands out is Darnell Nurse at $9.25 million
08:27a season for a while there until 2030. That is the big albatross that is hanging over this group.
08:37But you look like they're going to have an opportunity here. This, obviously, I screen
08:40capped this before the, or a screenshot of this, sorry, before the Wallman extension kicked in.
08:46But aside from that, they're going to be able to rebuild this blue line.
08:51Ekholm is going to be really important, although we will see. They're going to have an opportunity to
08:55really build this out. Down at goal, Stuart Skinner, Calvin Pickard, both of them going to have
09:00their contracts up at the end of the season. So when we talked about players on the hot seat earlier,
09:05Stuart Skinner 100% is one of those guys. But when you are looking at building a championship roster
09:11and you have those two guys up at the top, it just, it has to make things every, just a bit more
09:18easier for your team. So again, all the excuses, gone. All, anything, out the window. Have to,
09:25have to, have to win if you are the Edmonton Oilers. Tall John over in the chat. If they can't
09:33figure out how to get a goalie for Conor in the next three seasons, it will be the blunder of all
09:38blunders. Tall John already has been, but you are 100% correct. Yes, you have to. You have to get
09:43him a goalie. There's no more, oh, we lost out. Like, overpay. I don't care. It has to be corrected.
09:50Also, the salary savings with that team-friendly deal is the only shot before Edmonton goes south
09:54again. That's the other part of this, right? Like, if it doesn't happen, I don't think this is going
09:58to be a question anymore. If he doesn't win a championship there, I don't care if they go to
10:03the next three Stanley Cups. If they don't win, what else can he do for them, right? Does he have to
10:10take less? Does he have to be more valuable for them and like, oh, yeah, I'll just sign
10:17the Crosby contract, you know? And this one's a bigger savings than the Crosby one, I would
10:22suggest, based on a number of different factors. So yeah, if you can't do it now, then we're
10:28not having the, oh, will he, won't he, in a couple of seasons. We are having the, where
10:32is he going to go out of, um, out of all of this. A couple of other things to go along
10:40with this deal. One, this is going to make contract discourse insufferable for the next
10:49few years, right? Because now, any player who signs any kind of, and this is why the
10:53PA gets a little, mm-hmm, about these sorts of things, but any player who signs anything
10:58worth more than McDavid, it's like, what? You think you're better than McDavid? You think
11:01you're better than that guy? What are we doing here? I don't know why they're from
11:03New York, but, like, I, this is going to be infuriating. Whenever someone, because
11:10a lot of these guys, like, deserve to be paid more than 12.5 million dollars, but
11:14none of them deserve to be paid more than Connor McDavid. So it puts a weird sort of
11:18a cap on everything. And there are going to be contracts that are bigger than this
11:23one, because of desperate teams and everything like that, and the cap going up and
11:27this, that, and the other thing. But anyone, especially if the Leafs contract's coming up
11:33and everything like that, if there's any sort of blah, blah, blah, blah, blah about any contract
11:40going over 12.5, God, is it going to be annoying? Oh, it's going to be so annoying to have to deal
11:46with all of that contract talk. So this is why those types of things get really frustrating
11:52very quickly. In general, I was thinking about it like, oh, wow, this is a huge shift now
11:58for this offseason. And it kind of isn't, you know, because McDavid, this was the most likely
12:06outcome, not 12.5 by 2, but this was the most likely outcome, him staying in Edmonton. I know
12:11Nick Alberga on social media doing the countdown until McDavid signs with the Toronto Maple Leafs and
12:18all of those things. Like, I understand that part of it, that some people were looking at it. But for
12:24the most part, he was going to sign in Edmonton. So I don't think this is like LeBron, and I know
12:28he's tweeting out another decision video, but this isn't LeBron of a couple of years, or a decade ago
12:34now, I guess, where the Knicks are saving up cap space, and the Mavericks are saving up cap space,
12:40and that these guys are saying, whatever, and the Heat, obviously. It wasn't like everyone was
12:45gearing up for a run at Conor McDavid in the offseason. So I don't think there's anyone who's
12:52like, oh, damn, now plan B, let's go for this one. So I don't think it's that. But it does,
12:57I think, really change the free agent market. Now, this was going to be a gigantic market with
13:03McDavid. Kaprizov, Panarin still needs a contract. There's a bunch of very good players who are coming
13:09up in free agency, and now the real two big game-changer, game-changer, game-changers
13:14are kind of falling off a little bit. Now it really opens the door for other opportunities
13:22for some of those guys. So I'm interested to see now the pivot of everyone else, now that this has
13:28kind of officially been wrapped up. In the YouTube chat, Deeds is saying, if they don't win in any of
13:34the next three years, the only thing they can ask McDavid to do is play goalie himself. Oh, yeah,
13:39100%, right? Like, just, you know what, we're going with six. No goalies this year,
13:43we're pulling him, and McDavid's playing 45 minutes a night. We're going to keep the puck
13:46the whole time and try to figure it out that way. Yeah, like, his next contract should probably be
13:51huge. And if it's with, and look, if the Oilers win, a lot of these conversations, like, then it's
13:56worth it, you know? And that will then make the contract discussion even more insufferable when
14:01different players are looking for bigger deals than Connor McDavid's. But just imagine what the next
14:07one now is going to look like with the cap going up, we presume, and everything like that. So,
14:13yeah, he's, he has done everything he could now for the Edmonton Oilers. And we've talked before
14:19about how unique of a legacy he has, because any other star player in any other sport has the lack
14:30of champion success, championship success, sorry, that he has. And they're getting absolutely dumped
14:35on from every corner of the globe. Instead, everyone's like, yeah, no, they, they, they screwed
14:40up. They screwed up big time around that guy. He gets none of the blunt, nor should he. But this is
14:45another part of him just adding to the, look, I'm giving you every opportunity to win here. So could
14:52you figure it out, please? Quite the day for Connor McDavid to lock in that contract. What do you guys
14:58think about the contract? We've had a few people chatting in. If you're watching live, let me know in
15:02the chat. If you're watching after the fact, hit me up in the comments and we can talk about it. And
15:06if you tune in here after the hockey discussion ends, we're doing a lot of hockey today, but throw
15:11whatever you want in the chat and we can talk about it as the day rolls along. This one, this was the
15:18big one. So any thoughts you have on it, let me know. And if you want to keep the discussion going
15:22with a few people, share the video with your friends. Let's get a few people into the chat here and
15:26we can get a good debate going about Connor McDavid ruining free agency basically is that'll be the
15:31headline. It's not about the Oilers or whatever. It's about our enjoyment of July 1st and the drama
15:35that could come with that. So how dare he do such a thing to all of us.
