00:00My name is Carol Charnley and I am the Musical Director of the Otterley Bell and Chime Orchestra.
00:21Bell ringing was something that we got into with my late husband. He used to ring the tower bells at the parish church in Otterley.
00:30And they have a set of hand bells which they don't use.
00:35So he asked if he could borrow them and we did and we started ringing them.
00:41And we started a small group and we got going quite well and then the church suddenly decided they would like the bells back.
00:49So we gave them back but then we raised money to buy our own.
00:53We started in 1989 and we have done various places over the years.
01:00Harewood House and Emmerdale Wedding and been on the television.
01:06And just do local nursing homes and WIs and little events like that which we enjoy.
01:13One, two, three, four, two, two, three, four and three, two, five, four, two, three.
01:22You've got to be very concentrated so you forget all your outside troubles when you come and ring bells.
01:28And it's quite a friendly group.
01:31You're making music with friends and it's nice music because we play everything from jazz to classical, hymns, whatever.
01:39People think, oh, I need to know all about music.
01:42You don't need to know a lot about music.
01:45I mean, if you can count to four, basically.
01:50I've taught a lot of people who've never read music.
01:55I mean, we have a gentleman now coming, Tony, who's actually deaf and he has a cochlear implant.
02:02And he is quite proud of the fact that he can now ring hand bells.
02:08So, you know, it doesn't, don't be put off by the fact that you can't read music.
02:14We are looking for new ringers at the moment because we are quite low in numbers.
02:21And if we've got two lots of husband and wives and if one's where the other is.
02:25So we do, we are depleted some weeks.
02:28So we would like some new people to come and you can bring your wife, your husband, sister, brother, whoever wants to have a go with you.
02:37You don't have to come on your own.
02:39I find it very relaxing, actually, to ring bells.
02:45Because if you've rung a tune and it sounds beautiful and you've put all the louds and softs in.
02:54Then you've made something lovely for people to hear.
02:58Okay.
02:59Good to hear.
