00:00The carriage door hissed shut, sealing me inside with the silence of the mountains.
00:04It was the last train, the midnight run, and my ticket simply read,
00:09End of the line.
00:10I was a lone backpacker, or so I thought.
00:14Across the aisle, an old man sat perfectly still, his gnarled hands gripping a black cane.
00:19He hadn't looked up once since I'd boarded.
00:21As the train plunged into a long, dark tunnel, the lights overhead began to flicker,
00:27each pulse weaker than the last.
00:29A dry, raspy voice sliced through the clatter of the tracks.
00:33No one ever mates it through this tunnel, it was the old man.
00:37His eyes, like chips of obsidian, were fixed on me.
00:40Before I could respond, the train screeched to a halt,
00:43throwing us into absolute darkness and a deafening silence.
00:47Then a new sound.
00:48A faint, rhythmic thudding from above.
00:51Footsteps.
00:52On the roof.
00:53My heart hammered against my ribs.
00:55I fumbled in my pack, my fingers closing around the cold metal of my flashlight.
01:01Clicking it on, the beam cut a nervous path through the gloom.
01:04The windows, clear moments ago, were now coated in a thick white fog from the inside.
01:09As I watched, a handprint slowly materialized on the glass, then another, and another.
01:15I spun the light towards the old man's seat.
01:18It was empty.
01:19He was gone.
01:20Panicked, I swept the beam down the aisle.
01:23At the very end of the carriage where there should have been a solid wall,
01:26a faint light seeped from the edges of a hidden door.
01:29My hand trembled as I pushed it open.
01:32It revealed not another carriage, but an ancient stone staircase,
01:36spiraling impossibly upwards into the darkness of the tunnel itself.
01:39There was nowhere else to go.
01:42I climbed, the air growing colder, fresher with each step.
01:45Finally, I pushed through a heavy hatch and emerged onto a windswept cliffside.
01:50The sun was just beginning to rise, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.
01:55Below me, there were no train tracks, only the crumbling ruins of an ancient civilization.
02:00Confused, I reached into my pocket and pulled out my ticket.
02:04It was no longer the one I'd boarded with.
02:05This one was crisp, new, and stamped in gold ink.
02:10Return to your destiny.
02:11I looked back toward the hatch I'd just climbed out of.
02:14Standing there, bathed in the dawn light, was the old man, a gentle smile on his face.
02:19As the wind whipped around me, he dissolved into mist,
02:23vanishing as if he were never there at all.
02:25What just happened?
02:26Was it a dream, a warning, or a new beginning?
02:30Sometimes the end of the line is just the start of a new journey.
