00:00Get together, everyone you know
00:09All the memories that the FBI
00:12See the faces of the stormy show
00:17And you know I'm coming home this time
00:21And you know I'm coming home this time
00:30This time Backroads is heading to Kandos
00:49In the New South Wales Central Tablelands
00:52Where something a bit different is going on
01:00A gateway to World Heritage Listed National Parks
01:18Kandos was created in 1913 to exploit limestone in the area
01:23And quickly became a town famous for, wait for it, cement
01:29It's the town that made the cement that made your town
01:35It just boomed
01:36Cementing its place in history
01:38The town provided this crucial building material
01:42For iconic construction projects like the Sydney Harbour Bridge
01:46Mining set me up for life here
01:48When the mine closed in 2011
01:50The town had two options
01:53Reinvent itself or perish
01:56Suddenly all of our shops were empty
01:59We lost that big middle group of well-paid workers
02:03The future looked uncertain
02:06A lot of people packed up and moved really quickly
02:09For Kandos to survive
02:12It needed a shot of new blood
02:14Even if they were a bit out there
02:16They wore funny clothes
02:18They talked differently
02:19Did you know that Jack thought you were all wankers?
02:22Yeah, yeah, I suspected as much
02:24Or a dramatic turn of fortune
02:27We felt we were going to be run out of town, basically
02:31That was what we were very scared of
02:32I've come to Kandos to find out what fuels the creativity here
02:38And how has it transformed the place?
02:40Who knows?
02:41I might even tap into my own creative spirit along the way
02:44Do you want to see a beautiful view?
02:57I'd love a good view
02:58Bridget Baskerville is a 25-year-old artist
03:01And knows this area like the back of her hand
03:04We're on the western edge of the Great Dividing Range
03:07Which means we get beautiful views here
03:09Lucky you!
03:11And you were born and bred here?
03:12Yes
03:13How far does your family go back?
03:15Quite a few generations
03:16Dad was born locally
03:18My nan was born locally
03:20And what goes on here?
03:21There's a lot going on here
03:22You've come at a very good time
03:24Cementer Festival is on at the moment
03:26What is the Cementer Festival?
03:29It's a contemporary art festival
03:31Never would have expected it to happen in Kandos growing up
03:34But it's definitely a change in what the town is used to
03:39And yeah, I love it
03:40Oh, you have delivered in spades, Bridget
03:45How spectacular is this?
03:48It's so beautiful, isn't it?
03:52That's the Capity Valley below us
03:54Kandos is just around the corner
03:57And that is home down there
04:04Yeah, that's home
04:05Very lucky, aren't we?
04:08Totally lucky
04:09And what are we going to find when I get down there?
04:11You're going to find a very unique town
04:13A great community
04:14And lots of art
04:15Bridget's right
04:35The arts festival Cementer
04:37Is in preparation mode
04:39Gabrielle Bates is a visual and performance artist
04:42With over 30 years experience
04:45She's putting together a bold new project
04:48Oh, hello
04:49Good to meet you
04:50Good to meet you
04:51We're having a t-shirt painting workshop
04:53In preparation for my performance of Scrum
04:55Tomorrow night
04:56Right here at the Bowling Green
04:58Football Scrum
04:59Football Scrum, yes
05:01We're bringing sport and art together
05:03Gab's artwork is an attempt to bridge the divide
05:07Between two very different town groups
05:10The arts community
05:11And the footy team
05:13That seems very ambitious
05:14Yes, we are
05:16Well, I'd like a bit of risk
05:17The footy team is something that's always been missing from Cementer
05:19So, what are you actually getting people to do?
05:22Well, we're going to be painting spots and stripes on t-shirts
05:25And people can wear their t-shirts during the Scrum
05:28At least I can pretend that I'm playing the part
05:30That's right
05:31Up here
05:32Oh, that's the top there
05:33Yep
05:33I won't be doing the Scrum, will I?
05:35Oh, that's not my league
05:39I'm an NFL girl
05:39I hope so
05:40I really would love to see you get amongst it
05:42Because that's what community is all about
05:44It's about participation, Heather
05:45Oh, I'm a bit nervous
05:47Don't be nervous
05:48I like bright colours
05:49Too much beige in this world, don't you think?
05:52Way too much beige
05:53Way too much beige
05:53Gab is a relative newcomer to Kandos
05:56She moved here in 2022
05:58After coming to a Cementer festival
06:01How many artists like you live here now?
06:04There's at least 50 or 60 that I'm aware of
06:06That is a lot of artists
06:08For a little town this size
06:10Yes
06:10Artworks like this are giving the locals a chance to feel connected to the festival
06:15And encouraging blow-ins like me to get amongst it
06:19This is kind of fun, actually
06:20Yeah
06:21Wait until you have to paint 40
06:2340?
06:24I'm not doing 40
06:25This festival does seem pretty unconventional
06:35It's not the sort of country show I'm used to
06:39I hear there's something going on up the road
06:47That could expose a whole new side of myself
06:50Hello Kate
07:01Hello Heather
07:02What a room
07:03It's beautiful, isn't it?
07:05Yeah
07:05Now what is going to happen to me in here?
07:07Oh, I'm going to take your aura portrait
07:09An aura photograph
07:11That's right
07:12Okay
07:12Here we go
07:14Artist Kate Mitchell is capturing the spirit of the festival through aura photography
07:20She reckons by just taking a picture she can tap my inner self
07:25Focus your gaze right into the centre
07:27This is a bit scary
07:29Take a breath
07:30Here we go
07:33One
07:34Two
07:36Three
07:37You can relax
07:40Oh good
07:41Now what?
07:45Kate's artwork, Colour Fields, celebrates what she sees as the joy of old school analogue photography
07:52Well now we wait for the image to process
07:56What colours will be revealed?
07:58How much longer?
08:00Oh
08:01I'm getting impatient now
08:02Five minutes
08:03Five minutes?
08:04Listen, in the age of digital, look, you're impatient
08:07There's a bit of blue there
08:08Yeah
08:10I was hoping for pink, I like pink
08:11I think it will be a bit of pink
08:13Pretty amazing, you actually have a halo
08:17I kind of do
08:18I know
08:19Nobody in my family will believe this
08:21Now you have proof
08:23Oh my goodness
08:25I want to come to you next Christmas
08:26That's a beauty
08:29That's incredible
08:30A real beauty
08:30Now I've got my aura sorted
08:34It's time for me to get the inside scoop
08:37On what happens when contemporary art
08:39And a small rural community collide
08:42G'day boys
08:46Oh hello
08:46Good to see you
08:48Alex Wisser is an artist
08:50And co-founder of Cementor
08:52And Jack Pennell
08:54Is considered a Kandos caretaker
08:57So let's get this straight boys
09:00I'm dealing here with
09:01One bloke who's lived here all his life
09:03Yep
09:04And a newcomer
09:05Yes
09:05And your mates
09:06Yes
09:07You hesitated Jack
09:09No you call us mates
09:11Yeah exactly
09:11So how far back does your family go here?
09:14Oh early 1900s
09:16Probably 1800s
09:17Oh you're really old Kandos
09:19Yeah I was an apprentice at the cement works
09:22At 15 years of age
09:24Then I moved on to a coal mine in Kandos
09:26Mining was your go?
09:28Mining set me up for life
09:29Yeah
09:30Yeah how tough a time was it
09:31For the town when the cement works closed?
09:33Very tough in the original
09:35Because they only give them
09:37Half a day's notice
09:39The company said
09:41We're shutting the doors
09:42At lunchtime
09:43Grab your gear
09:44Whatever tools you've got
09:46And don't come back to work
09:47It must have been terrible
09:50So the whole nature of the town
09:51Would have just changed overnight almost?
09:53It virtually did yeah
09:54Everyone was in shock
09:56There was an exodus of residents
10:00After the cement works shut down
10:01But Alex
10:05Originally from California
10:07Decided to move in
10:09I reckon we'll get
10:12A couple of hundred
10:13The most
10:14He took up an artist's residency here
10:16In 2012
10:17And that's where the idea of cementa was born
10:20But it wasn't an easy birth
10:25Well everybody thanks for coming
10:27Welcome to the very first tour
10:29On the very first day
10:31Of the very first cementa
10:33Eight people were here
10:36The townspeople weren't so sure
10:41No this one
10:42It does not qualify
10:45It's hard for me
10:46Because there was
10:48A certain bit of tension
10:49We felt we were going to
10:50Be run out of town basically
10:52That was what we were very scared of
10:54They said to him
10:55The townspeople fought
10:56After the first year
10:57That they were all wankers
10:58And did you know
10:59That Jack thought
11:00You were all wankers?
11:02Yeah
11:02Yeah I suspected as much
11:04He made it clear did he?
11:05You know we understand
11:07Like what we do is not
11:08You know everybody's cup of tea
11:10It's outside of the ordinary
11:11If it wasn't we wouldn't be doing it
11:12This is my ministry of handshakes
11:13Thank you very much
11:15So what changed?
11:18Alex asked how could he get involved
11:19In the community
11:20And I said well you can come down
11:22In our street machines
11:23I don't know what a street machine is
11:25It's hot rod cars
11:26Oh right
11:27Bit of a contrast for you Alex
11:28Yeah
11:29And it was really good
11:31And he come down and helped us set up
11:33And all the other members
11:34And that were going
11:34He's an artist
11:35What's he doing?
11:36I said well they're all the same
11:37We read, eat
11:38And go to the toilet
11:39That's generous of you
11:40Yeah
11:40People you know
11:43Were very suspicious
11:44About what we were doing
11:45But Jack was in the background there
11:46Just talking to folk
11:47And going you know what
11:48Let's just let them do what they do
11:49And see how it lands
11:50And so that support
11:52I think that was really
11:53What made the first festival possible
11:55We've been friends overseas
11:56I think haven't we?
11:57Yeah yeah
11:58Yeah
11:58The locals soon realised
12:05That even though Cementer
12:06Was like nothing they'd ever seen before
12:08That's not the position
12:09Of the culture
12:10Art could help bring in money
12:13And reinvigorate their town
12:20And 12 years later
12:30Alex and his team
12:32Must be doing something right
12:34How is it now?
12:48Nothing
12:48I think it's great
12:49Yeah
12:49Everybody gets on
12:52There's probably
12:53A fistful of people
12:54Still don't agree
12:56With what they do
12:57And think it's not a really good way
12:59Of making a living
13:00But
13:00A fistful is not many
13:01Yeah exactly
13:02Peter Swain
13:26A Davey and Wiradjuri man
13:28Is a key part of Cementer
13:30We gathered here
13:31Doing exactly the same
13:32As what my people have done
13:34For thousands and thousands of years
13:37I welcome you here
13:39To our ancestral land
13:41All we ask
13:42Is that when you leave
13:44You take some of our magic with you
13:46When you go
13:47But you leave some of yours
13:49For those that follow
13:50Before I see more of the festival
13:59Peter is offered to take me out on country
14:01I'm going to get everyone to paint up
14:04We put on the ochre
14:05To make ourselves visible to our ancestors
14:09No matter where they come from
14:11He's invited me to join his family
14:14At a significant Davey site
14:16Where art has been central to the community
14:19For thousands of years
14:21Well before cement
14:23What an incredible place Peter
14:30Yeah it's beautiful isn't it
14:32And tell me about this rock art
14:33We're standing in front of
14:35What is the significance for your mock
14:37It's a giant fish
14:38Done in hand prints
14:40As far as I know
14:41It hasn't been seen before
14:42Anywhere else
14:43How does it make you feel
14:44Standing in front of art
14:46Done by your ancestors
14:47What thousands of years ago
14:49It's an honour
14:50To walk in their footsteps
14:51It's an amazing feeling
14:53Not everyone has that opportunity
14:55I feel blessed
14:57I feel lucky
14:58To be able to do it
14:59This country
15:02So sacred to Peter
15:03And the other Davey descendants
15:05Also has a very painful history
15:08A lot of the massacres and atrocities
15:12Have gone on around here
15:14So the whole mob were massacred
15:19Is that what you're saying?
15:20We're talking 90%
15:22Jimmy and Peggy
15:23Who are my three times great grandparents
15:26Survived the massacres
15:27Peggy was an infant
15:28And Jimmy was a young boy
15:31And he hid in the swamps
15:33The striking mural
15:38Of Peggy and Jimmy
15:39On the wall
15:40Of the Kandos Museum
15:42Reflects the growing
15:44Public acknowledgement
15:45Of the massacre
15:45What has the Cementer Festival
15:51Done for your people?
15:53It's given us an outlet
15:54To show who we are
15:57And that we're still here
15:59The festival now
16:01It's around 40%
16:03Aboriginal content
16:05That reflects the town
16:06Because we have a very large
16:09High percentage of
16:10Aboriginal population here
16:12It gives them pride
16:13Peter tells me
16:16The rise of art in Kandos
16:18Has coincided
16:19With a renewed recognition
16:21Of the Wiradjuri community
16:22A group of Indigenous women
16:25Created a new dance
16:26As part of an earlier festival
16:28It would be the first time
16:31A dance has been created
16:32And performed
16:33On country
16:34In around 200 years
16:36So very inspirational
16:38To allow everyone
16:40To express who they are
16:41Back in town
16:48It's amazing to see
16:50How a pretty crazy
16:51Brave idea
16:52Has grown into a festival
16:54Spanning more than 20 venues
16:56That's music?
17:18What is music?
17:20Shave, shave
17:21The foil artwork
17:30Is quite literally
17:32Moving
17:33I can see why
17:36Some of the locals
17:36Would have doubts
17:37About calling this
17:38Art
17:39It's certainly not
17:41Everyone's cup of tea
17:42To get an alternative
17:45Take on it
17:46I'm catching up
17:47With an incredible
17:48Volunteer group
17:49Known as the
17:50Kandos Nannas
17:51Ellen Riley
17:53Is Head Nanna
17:54Hello there
17:56Hello Heather
17:57Welcome
17:58I hope you won't think
18:00I'm presumptuous
18:01But while we're having a chat
18:02I've got a button
18:04Missing from this shirt
18:05I'm very happy to help
18:07Absolutely
18:08Now you've been
18:10Around Kandos
18:11For quite a few years now
18:13What did you think
18:15Of the festival
18:15When it first started here?
18:17Well we were all
18:18A little bit sceptical
18:19And it took a little while
18:22For the cementer artists
18:23To explain themselves
18:26To us
18:26Because we're just
18:28Simple country folk
18:30Why were you sceptical
18:31About them?
18:31Well they wore funny clothes
18:33They talked differently
18:35Their artworks
18:37Were really out there
18:39And a lot of us
18:41Didn't understand
18:42What they were doing
18:45Or why they were doing it
18:46It's not always
18:47Your typical art
18:49Is it?
18:49Do you sort of
18:49Get the hang of it now?
18:50Well contemporary art
18:52Is different
18:52And a lot of us
18:54Are more impressionist
18:56Realistic art people
18:58But we're getting to know it
19:00And we love it
19:02After the cement works
19:04Closed in 2011
19:05Many of those
19:06Who chose to stay on
19:08Had significantly
19:09Reduced incomes
19:10The kandos nanas
19:14Grew out of the devastation
19:16We've got 50, 60 people
19:19Working every week
19:20We're all pensioners
19:22Or low income people
19:23And that means
19:25We're not sitting at home
19:26Staring at the wall
19:27And we were able to create
19:28This dynasty
19:30Empire
19:31The nanas empire
19:33Yeah
19:34I love that
19:35Thank you
19:35Go the nanas
19:36Yeah
19:36And what I see here
19:39Are fundraising demons
19:40We have been able to
19:44In the last 12 months
19:46Give out $70,000
19:47From the income
19:48From our shop
19:49Into our community
19:51To help
19:51And that goes for everything
19:56From meal subsidies
19:57And charity support
19:58To equipment for the school
20:00Their value goes far beyond
20:06Raising money
20:06They provide emotional support
20:09And a purpose
20:09For a large proportion
20:11Of the town's elderly
20:12Now you're not forgetting
20:14About my button there
20:15Are you
20:16How's it going
20:16It's finished
20:17Yes
20:18Give me a look
20:20It's finished
20:20Oh excellent work Ellen
20:23I couldn't have done
20:24A better job myself
20:25So what sort of town
20:27Is Kandos
20:28What's it come to mean
20:29To you personally now
20:30It's the most lovely
20:32Gentle
20:33Loving
20:34Place
20:36For me
20:39For me
20:41This is our beautiful
20:42With Ellen
20:43And the nanas at the helm
20:44Kandos isn't just
20:46Any old town
20:47I'll show you
20:48Our fabric room
20:49It's a place
20:51That still looks out
20:52For its own
20:53No matter how much
20:55Things change
20:55Sewing bits and pieces
20:57That people need
20:58And if you ever
20:59Find yourself in Kandos
21:01Don't be surprised
21:02If a nana offers you
21:03A chair and a chat
21:04Because that's just
21:05The way things are done
21:06Around here
21:06Gab Bates
21:16The artist who got me
21:18Painting the t-shirt
21:19Is about to kick off
21:21Her artwork
21:21Welcome to the scrubs
21:24My name is Gabrielle Bates
21:32I am Kandos
21:33Local
21:33I am an artist
21:34And I like the scrubs
21:35Gab has been working
21:40With the local footy team
21:41And a choreographer
21:42For weeks
21:43For this big moment
21:45And I'm a somewhat
21:48Reluctant participant
21:49Get on this field
21:50When I invite you
21:52And you
21:53Scrum
21:54Do you understand me?
21:56Yes
21:57There's excitement in the air
22:00And suddenly
22:16I find myself
22:18Swept up in the pack
22:30Let's see how this went down
22:41With the locals
22:42So how did it feel out there
22:45As being a part of art?
22:46Oh it was amazing
22:47Yeah I'll tell you that
22:48It was truly wonderful
22:51It's just a great experience
22:52Not the first time
22:53I've worked with Gabby
22:54But every time I have
22:54It's been brilliant
22:55Emma is the coach
22:58Of the local women's footy team
23:00The Tiaratars
23:01That was amazing
23:02That was like the best
23:03Running session we could have
23:05For the start of a football season
23:06We get to play our first game tomorrow
23:08And everyone has had a ball tonight
23:09What do you think about Samantha?
23:11My daughter loves her
23:12But I am not the ardiest person
23:14And I enjoyed walking around last night
23:15And seeing all the different art
23:17And the different concepts
23:18Of how people
23:20Like take in certain things
23:22And what about the artist herself?
23:24Does Gab see Scrum
23:25As a success?
23:26It's really fun
23:27And I'm really glad
23:28That I did it
23:29And it's amazing
23:30Just seeing all those bodies out there
23:32I'm pumped
23:33They're pumped
23:34I need a drink
23:35I've got dry mouth
23:35Now I'm checking in
23:43With the organiser
23:44Alex Wisser
23:45To find out
23:46How the rest of the festival is going
23:48Oh it's been going amazing
23:50We hit the road
23:51And every time you do that
23:52With a festival
23:53Everything shakes
23:54And rattles
23:55And it picks up speed
23:56And momentum
23:57And what you do
23:58Is you hold on tight
23:59That's the way I look at it
24:00And try to make it to the end
24:02That's what we've been doing since then
24:03Over the years
24:07The festival has attracted
24:08Thousands of visitors
24:10To the region
24:10But it's also put Kandos
24:13On the artistic map
24:14Do you take some personal pride
24:19In the fact that the town
24:20Does seem to have been touched
24:22By what you've done
24:23Yeah of course
24:24I mean this is my community
24:25So of course I want my community's approval
24:27I think the festival has
24:29Touched a nerve more broadly
24:31Around people
24:32Being hungry for a sense of community
24:34And I think Samantha celebrates that
24:36And it celebrates that aspect of Kandos
24:38As another Cementer festival
25:06Is done and dusted
25:07I'm getting together
25:09For a debrief
25:10With some of the locals
25:11I think that art
25:16Has offered different perspectives
25:18In Kandos
25:20Art like the town itself
25:22And how it's interconnected
25:23Offers a sense of community
25:26I don't really know
25:27What the future of the town is
25:28But I think community
25:30Has always been really strong
25:31In the past
25:32Strong in the present
25:33And I hope in the future
25:34Community will help us
25:37Get through
25:38Whatever faces us
25:39Well it is my home
25:41And it's where I want to end my days
25:43It would be really lovely
25:44To see the town
25:46Continue to thrive
25:49As a creative place
25:50What I've discovered
25:54Is that the creativity here
25:56Runs deeper than the festival
25:58It's rooted in the community's resilience
26:02And desire for rejuvenation
26:04Art can't single-handedly save a town
26:12But it can be thought-provoking
26:15Inclusive
26:15And fun
26:16And look at this
26:18It also creates connections
26:20In my mind
26:24It's no longer a concrete town
26:26That industry has passed
26:27And candles needs another future
26:30I don't think that art
26:31Is going to be
26:32It's exclusive
26:33It's not going to be
26:34A one industry town
26:36An art town
26:37It's going to be many things
26:38But art is going to play
26:40An important role in that
26:41Next time
26:56I'm on a road
26:57That crosses our entire nation
27:00It's called
27:01The Outback Way
27:02And I'll visit
27:03The desert communities
27:05Along its path
27:06Mira
27:09Mira
27:10On a journey
27:15That's full of surprises
27:17Wow
27:18No wonder people come
27:19From around the world
27:20To see this
