00:00It's very important how you feel, whether you feel comfortable.
00:03And you always look for certain positions that could fit your chess playing mood at a certain time.
00:15And I also made a few fluctuations.
00:17As I said, from E4, I went to D4, 1977.
00:20Then I moved gradually back to E4, playing with Karpov.
00:25And by the beginning of the 90s, after playing my fifth match with Karpov, I almost exclusively moved to E4.
00:34But at the end of my career, I played equally E4 and D4.
00:38Maybe a little bit more E4, but I didn't have any special preferences.
00:51In 1977, I looked for some new openings.
00:54And I was already a Soviet junior champion under 18, and I had to defend my title.
01:01And I worked with Alexander Shakarov in Baku.
01:04Alexander Nikitin also was helping me.
01:07And we thought about having some new ideas, how to expand my opening repertoire.
01:17And with black pieces, I switched from Sicilian, that I played almost exclusively, to Karakhan.
01:26After E4, I played C6, D4, D5.
01:30Knight C3, take on E4, and Bishop F5.
01:32I always played Bishop F5, except one game, the sixth game, against D2, so where I played knight D7.
01:42That was definitely not a good move for me.
01:46Though Karpov played this move many times quite successfully, but that was the wrong choice.
01:50So I either had to stay with Bishop F5, who played my normal opening.
01:56Painful memories.
01:57Painful memories.
01:59But I switched.
