Melanie Bracewell, Ruth Madeley, Jenny Powell, Mark Steel

Series 9, Week 1, Day 5

Every day this week, celebrity contestants Melanie Bracewell, Ruth Madeley, Jenny Powell and Mark Steel take on a series of quiz rounds selected by the host, quiz legend Richard Osman.

A daily winner is declared following a quickfire round at the end of each show, and the scores are tallied across the week, resulting in an overall champion being crowned on Friday.

Will the winning stars opt for the coveted House of Games dartboard, or will they be tempted with the House of Games custom beanie hat?

00:00Hello, everybody. House of Games, did you say? Double Points Friday, did you say? Three people could still win, did you say? I have all of those things for you and more. Somebody is winning this trophy, and it is very, very close at the top. It's been a brilliant week's worth of quizzing. Let's meet our four players for the final time, shall we? They are Melanie Bracewell.
00:28Mark Steele, Ruth Madeley and Jenny Powell. Hey, everybody. Jenny. Yes. You and I have got a treat in store. I've loved it. And today we're going to see these three battle it out. I do want to choose a winner. It's tricky, isn't it? It's tricky, because everyone's just lovely as well. Yeah, no, they're a nice gang. I know they are. I'm looking forward to them knocking chunks out of each other for the next half hour. I'll be there ringside. Yeah, exactly. We've got the best seat.
00:57We've got the best seats in the house. Our leaderboard. Let's just take a look at it before we do anything else. Mark has won three times this week. Melanie has lost in a tiebreak. Ruth won yesterday, which means there's just three points between them. Eight points for a win today, six for second, and so on. Anybody's game. Melanie.
01:15Now, you're very, very kindly. You're only here for a couple of weeks. Yeah. And you're giving us a week of your time. You're flying back to Australia next Monday. We want to send you back with something spectacular.
01:25That would be amazing. If you win today, you've got every chance of that trophy. Yes. You've had a tiebreak already. What can you do? How can you get that final point? How do you get yourself over that line?
01:36Well, I do come from a cricketing family, so I feel like my strength comes in games that last five days. So, it really is this final day that may, you know.
01:47When you say cricketing family, so your family are the New Zealand Bracewells? They are the New Zealand Bracewells. I mean, they're like real, that's like a proper, that's not like a family that plays cricket.
01:55Yeah, bet down. Yeah, it's fun. But competitive as well. Yeah. All of that. Mark, what a start to the week you've had. It's been really, really, really strong. One more strong day, you walk away with a trophy. How do you feel?
02:07If I was a footballer, I'd go, yeah, but, you know, it all means nothing if we can't get out over the line at the end of the day, Richard, you know what I mean?
02:13But do you know what? They're right. It does mean nothing. Those three days will be for nothing if you walk away without that trophy, Ruth Madeley.
02:21Listen, momentum, that's the big thing. And you've got the momentum from yesterday's win. This would be a good day to win as well.
02:26It would, but my goal was to win one of the days. So, I feel like I've already done that.
02:32It's like when Djokovic won his first Wimbledon, and he went, do you know what? That is me done.
02:37You know what? That'll be me. That's all I wanted. Really great weeks quizzing. Jenny, I'll tell you what you can do today, and that's win a prize.
02:42OK. Let's take a look at Stacey's prizes. Can I pick? The trophy. Yes, of course. Goodness me, you can.
02:47Oh, look. Ooh. You have got the cycle helmets, there's the egg house, the suitcase, sunglasses, and a hip flask.
02:55How about that, Jenny? What would you go for? Oh, my goodness, it's going to be the egg case.
02:59Yeah, the egg case, of course. Isn't it just? I mean, the price of eggs at the moment, they need a very special case to be put in.
03:05Exactly. It's an egg safe, I call it. Yeah. Yeah. Ruth, what would you go for?
03:10I mean, I can't say the hip flask, because I've already got a decanter.
03:13Yeah, you can. So, I would say.
03:15Some days you stay in, some days you go out.
03:18You know what? I mean, they would be a nice pair, wouldn't they? So, it would either be the hip flask or the case.
03:22OK. That case is cool. The weedy luggage is good.
03:24It's very, very cool. You get through that entire decanter, the helmet might come in handy as well.
03:29Exactly. I mean, even I don't think I could pull that off.
03:32Mark, what do you fancy?
03:35No doubt for me, the hip flask, when everything's gone wrong and I'm sat under a bridge.
03:40No.
03:41With that, it will be a reminder of the lovely days.
03:45The glory days.
03:46Yeah.
03:46The glory. Didn't you used to be Mark Steele?
03:48Yeah, on the House of Games.
03:50And you go, I forget.
03:53Melanie, what would you like to take back? There's an obvious price to take back to Australia.
03:57If it's something that I can put my fondue set in, I would have to go the suitcase.
04:02You're going to go suitcase.
04:03Yeah.
04:03Listen, it's been a great week's quizzing. One of the three of you is going to win the trophy.
04:07Who is it going to be, I wonder? Shall we find out?

08:43Jenny, I was quick to inform you, you get to get off the mark.
08:47Yet to.
08:47But we're enjoying ourselves.
08:48Yeah.
08:49Yeah.

08:52Mark, you have three.
08:53Ruth is our early leader with four points.

09:04Tokes emoji.
09:06Jenny, who would you like to play with?
09:09Who'll have me?
09:10Not a big response.
09:12Anyone will have you, Jenny.
09:14Um, Ruth?

09:18Go, girls.
09:19Of course.
09:19Ruth and Jenny are a team.
09:21Mark and Mel are a team.
09:22Now, in this round, before the show, you sent me the names of a 2010s film,
09:26but you were only allowed to use emojis.
09:28Your partner must guess the film that you sent me.
09:30Mark, before the show, Mel sent me this.
09:33Which 2010s film is she hinting at?
09:36OK.
09:45Yeah, I know.
09:47Is it American Pie?
09:49No.
09:50Is it American Pie?
09:51No.
09:51Any guesses on the other team?
09:54I'm so sorry, Mel, if I've got no idea.
09:56Can I have a guess?
09:57You can have a guess.
09:59The two things in the middle, what are they?
10:02Turning your phone off.
10:03Because I thought it was Bridge of Spies.
10:05Yes.
10:06So it's Bridge Offs Pies.
10:10Oh, that's so nice.
10:11There is a spy emoji, and I thought that's too boring,
10:17and I realised boring doesn't get you, you know,
10:20boring gets the points.
10:21I should have gone with boring.
10:21It's magnificently artistic.
10:23It's good, right?
10:24Beautiful.
10:24Very clever.
10:26Almost too clever?
10:27Too clever.
10:27I know, I know.
10:29That's on me.
10:30Jenny.
10:31Yes.
10:31Before the show, Ruth sent me the name of a 2010s film,
10:34using just emojis.
10:35Which film is this, please?
10:41This was really hard.
10:42Ah.
10:43Door, run.
10:46Runner.
10:47Runner?
10:48Door, runner.
10:49This was hard to...
10:51Yeah.
10:52Door, sprint, run, fast, door, fast, fast, bender, fast.
11:03You see, I'm stuck on the door, and all I'm thinking of is movies with doors.
11:08Are you happy to give up?
11:09Yeah.
11:10Have you got this at home?
11:11Ruth, why don't you take us through your emojis and your thinking,
11:15and then tell us the name of the film.
11:16OK, so, she's leaving, she's exiting.
11:20Yes.
11:21So, she's gone.
11:23With the wind?
11:25And she's a girl.
11:27Gone, girl.
11:28Gone, girl.
11:29How else would you have done that?
11:30Please tell me, because I struggled on this for so long.
11:33Yeah.
11:33Now you've said it.
11:34Is there a gone emoji?
11:36No.
11:36Gone.
11:37No.
11:37A gong.
11:38Yeah.
11:39It'll still be hard.
11:39You could have gone.
11:40Oh, gong.
11:41Gong, girl.
11:42Oh, I could have done a gong.
11:44Hard, though.
11:44That was really hard.
11:45That was a really hard one.
11:46That's unlucky.
11:47If anyone got that at home, very, very well played.
11:50Come here now.
11:52Mel.
11:53Yes.
11:53Thus far, this round is not going great,
11:55but it's going to be saved,
11:56because Mark sent me the name of a 2010s film,
11:59using just emojis,
12:00but what is this film, please?
12:04Aw.
12:07OK.
12:08Oh, is this The Revenant?
12:12Is it The Revenant?
12:14Well done.
12:15Wow.
12:15Wow.
12:16Well done.
12:16That's essentially the flop.
12:17Yeah.
12:17Well done.
12:19That's very, very impressive stuff.
12:22Did you go up there so quickly?
12:23So quickly.
12:24Very nice with that.
12:25Well done.
12:26Well done, guys.
12:27Ruth, before the show,
12:28Jenny sent me the name of a 2010s movie,
12:31in the form of these emojis.
12:35OK.
12:36There's a lot going on there.
12:38There's a lot going on.
12:39There's a lot of information.
12:40There's a lot of information.
12:41Choices.
12:42What's good about that,
12:43is you've also got all the subplots in there.
12:45Yeah.
12:46And the sequels.
12:50I could have dropped a couple of those emojis.
12:52I mean, you could have.
12:53Maybe the end.
12:55OK.
12:55No table talk.
12:57No table talk.
12:58Er, London has fallen.
13:01I don't know.
13:02London has fallen?
13:03Yeah.
13:03Why not?
13:04Is that the answer?
13:05Yeah.
13:06I'm going to go.
13:07It's, er...
13:08Can I have a go?
13:08If you...
13:09Do you want to have a go?
13:10Do you want to have a go?
13:11Is it Guardians of the Galaxy?
13:12Yeah.
13:14And you're thinking, like,
13:15a galaxy chocolate bar?
13:16Yeah.
13:17Yeah.
13:17OK.
13:18Guardians of the Galaxy.
13:19So you've got two planets.
13:20You've got a chocolate bar.
13:21Because I thought, like,
13:22guard, angel,
13:23and then I was like,
13:23guardian, angel.
13:24To be honest,
13:25that's how I got guardians.
13:27Do you know what?
13:27The more you look into it,
13:28the better it is.
13:29Yeah.
13:30Thanks for that.
13:30But you know what I mean?
13:31It's like one of those films
13:32that you see it the first time.
13:33You're like, yeah, it was OK.
13:33You see it again, you go,
13:35oh, that is a masterpiece.
13:36Oh, I get it.
13:36Yeah.
13:36That is a masterpiece.
13:37And I feel terrible
13:38because we could have sat here
13:39for another week
13:40and I wouldn't have got that.
13:42So...
13:42Guardians of the Galaxy.
13:43Some people at home
13:44will definitely have got that.
13:45Well, Melanie got it.
13:46So it's...
13:46Very nice, very nice.
13:47Very nicely played.
13:49It's the end of the round, though.
13:50We didn't give away
13:51a lot of points during that round.
13:53But we learned a lot.
13:54We did.
13:55Our leaderboard looks like this.
13:57Jenny, still yet to get off the mark.
13:59Melanie, you've got two.
14:00Mark and Ruth,
14:01four points each.
14:03We are still no closer
14:04to knowing who is going to win this trophy.
14:07Three rounds to go.
14:09Our next round is...
14:13Z to A.
14:15Fingers on buzzers, please.
14:16I'm going to show you three clues.

14:22However, I'm going to show you
14:22those clues letter by letter.

17:54Just two rounds to go.
17:56Oh my gosh.
17:57Before we give away the trophy,
17:58our next round is...
18:00Put your finger on it.
18:04If you take your tablets out,
18:05please, everybody.
18:06I'm going to show you
18:07a series of pictures
18:08and ask you to put your finger
18:09on something.
18:10Your first picture is this.
18:14And I wonder if you could
18:15put your finger, please,
18:16on the guava fruit.
18:20The guava.
18:21Which one of those
18:22is a guava, I wonder?
18:32I want to know what all of them...
18:34I sort of want to know
18:35all of them,

18:37that I don't know
18:38what they are.
18:38I think the top right
18:39is the coronavirus.
18:41I knew I recognised it.
18:42I want to know
18:43what the middle one is.
18:44I knew I recognised it.
18:45What do you think
18:46at home there?
18:47Which of those
18:47is a guava?
18:50Mel.
18:50What are you saying?
18:52Well, I know
18:53it's not top middle
18:54as it is my race.
18:56Okay.
18:56Yes, that is.
18:57I'm so sorry.
18:58Is that triggering
18:59at all for you?
19:00Is that fine?
19:00It is, it is.
19:01I don't want to be sensitive.
19:02Makes me this home.
19:02But I think it's top left.
19:04I'm not 100% sure.
19:05But that's what I thought.
19:06You think top left,
19:06that's where you've gone.
19:07Mark, where have you gone?
19:08Exactly that.
19:09I've sort of,
19:10I can eliminate
19:10about three of them
19:11that I know.
19:12Yes.
19:12But that's all.
19:14So you've gone top left
19:15as well.
19:16Ruth, where have you gone?
19:17Top left.
19:18You've gone top left too.
19:20Okay.
19:21Jenny, if you've gone top left
19:22as well,
19:22there is no jeopardy
19:23left in this round.
19:24No jeopardy left,
19:25I'm afraid.
19:26It's just, yeah,
19:26I've gone top left.
19:27Top left as well.
19:28So, kiwi, right?
19:30I've got kiwi,
19:31and then we've got...
19:31Lychee.
19:32There's a lychee,
19:33there's a passion fruit down at the bottom.
19:35I think it's a pineapple.
19:36Is it dragon fruit?
19:38Dragon fruit is just below.
19:39Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:40It's the guava, I think.
19:41So, listen,
19:41we're running out.
19:42Yeah.
19:42So, maybe that is guava.
19:43If it is,
19:44things on that leaderboard
19:45are going to change a lot
19:46in that everyone's going to get
19:47one more point.
19:48Let's find out.
19:49Have you gone top left at home?
19:51Is that the guava?
19:52It is the guava.
19:55Nicely done.
19:57Mangosteen is the middle one now.
19:59Oh, my God.
20:00Wow.
20:00And the bottom left
20:01is a horned melon.
20:02A horned melon?
20:04Your next picture is this.
20:07Oh.
20:07And I wonder if you could
20:08put your finger
20:09on the 22-metre line.
20:14What do you think
20:17at home on this one?
20:18Are you good on
20:18tropical fruit and rugby?
20:21I'm...
20:21Oh, yeah.
20:22Right, never mind.
20:22I'm stupid.
20:23I'm not very good at rugby.
20:30Everyone is in.
20:33Mark,
20:33are you a rugby fan?
20:35It's one of the few sports
20:36that I don't watch very much.
20:38Yeah, same.
20:38But I think the 22-metre line
20:40is the...
20:41I think there are two of them
20:43and I think it's
20:44that one and the other one.
20:46OK.
20:46I've got you.
20:4722-metre line.
20:49Ruth, agree?
20:50Disagree?
20:50I've got no idea.
20:51Yeah.
20:52You're among friends.
20:53Thank goodness.
20:54Yeah.
20:55But, yeah, no idea.
20:57Jenny, rugby fan?
20:58Not really,
20:59but I've gone for a dotted line.
21:01Yeah, because why not?
21:02But this is much better
21:03than last time
21:04because we've all
21:04gone for different things.
21:06Australia and New Zealand,
21:07they both love their rugby.
21:08Yes, and...
21:09Are you a rugby fan?
21:10Yeah, yeah, I enjoy it.
21:11Um, I've put it
21:14exactly where Mark has put it.
21:15Exactly where Mark is.
21:16That's got to feel good.
21:18In the middle of it, yeah.
21:19What do you think at home?
21:19Where have you gone on this one?
21:20Let's take a look, shall we?
21:21You're giving away
21:22two points.
21:23We're giving away
21:23one point each.
21:24The 22-metre line is...
21:27Right there.
21:28Nicely done.
21:28Very nice.
21:29Point to Mark
21:30and a point to Mel.
21:32Uh, next picture.
21:36Could you please
21:36put your finger
21:38on the anti-tragus?
21:40Oh, my goodness.
21:40Anti-tragus.
21:44No idea.
21:46Do you know this one
21:47at home, the anti-tragus?
21:49Feel free to look
21:50at each other's ears
21:50if it helps.

22:10Yeah.
22:11Jenny, where are you?
22:12I've gone for the bit
22:13underneath that,
22:15but in, like,
22:16just before you go
22:17into the ear hole.
22:18That's it.
22:19Okay.
22:19Uh, Mel.
22:21Do they have ears
22:21in Australia?
22:22Oh, we're just
22:23getting around to it.
22:23Yeah.
22:24Um, I...
22:25My theory is, like,
22:27esophagus.
22:28Yeah.
22:29So I think it's, like,
22:30the actual hole of the ear,
22:31maybe, sort of like a...
22:33The actual hole.
22:33It's very hard to know
22:35where people have actually
22:36put their cross on this one,
22:38I would think.
22:38Yeah, yeah.
22:39Mark, what are you saying?
22:40I've guessed the same as
22:42Ruth.
22:45Okay, so the top bend.

22:47Essentially.
22:47So top bend,
22:49bottom bend,
22:50ear hole.
