00:00Hey everybody, welcome along to Wednesday's House of Games.
00:12We have a two-time winner on our hands, but we had a tie-break yesterday.
00:15If you haven't seen it, go on iPlayer, watch it now, and then come on, watch this one.
00:18At the end of the week, someone is winning this trophy.
00:22Who is it going to be? It might be the gentleman in seat one, but you never know, do you?
00:26Our players this week are John Waite.
00:28SMA, Leila Ruas, Sarah Keyworth, and Kevin Eldon.
00:36Sarah Keyworth.
00:37Now, we had a tie-break yesterday.
00:40You and John were tied, you buzzed and you went for it, but John took the title.
00:45He's beatable, isn't he?
00:46I've never had a nemesis before.
00:50But I think it's John Waite.
00:52What an annoying nemesis to have, though.
00:54It's such a friendly nemesis.
00:55Because he can sort of do everything, a friendly nemesis.
00:57Aww.
00:58That's a good kids book, isn't he?
00:59He's my Ned Flanders.
01:01No, no-one wants to be Ned Flanders.
01:03I'd rather be Ursula.
01:04Nobody wants to be Homer Simpson, either.
01:06Excellent.
01:07You got back at him by calling him Ned Flanders.
01:09I think that might be the way to be taken.
01:10Yeah, it's one all now.
01:11Yeah.
01:12Leila, let's take a look at the weekly leaderboard.
01:14At the moment, you're at the bottom of it.
01:16Yeah, do we have to?
01:17The rest of the week is climbing that leaderboard, I'm certain of it.
01:20Because actually, it's pretty close at the top.
01:22John, as you'd expect, is on eight.
01:24Then, Kevin and Sarah and Leila.
01:25So, Leila, today, maybe, because you've got good points each day, just not quite enough.
01:30I like your encouragement.
01:31Well, listen, you keep going to the final whistle, don't you?
01:34Yeah, absolutely.
01:35That's the truth.
01:36Kevin.
01:37Hello.
01:38Kevin, we had a tie-break yesterday.
01:39You were only one point off that tie-break as well.
01:41I know, I know, but these are all statistics and, you know, for people who are playing games
01:46and are concerned with the temporary statuses of winning and losing, and I'm just not interested
01:53in that.
01:54I'm just here for the love of the programme.
01:56I've always loved this programme.
01:57I'm not sucking up to you.
01:58I always love this programme.
01:59I think you've got a winning, you know, Kevin, I'm almost certain.
02:02Well, let's see.
02:03Because the show loves you as well.
02:04Shall we take a look at today's prizes?
02:06Yes.
02:07If you win today, you could take home one of these.
02:10There's the cushion, the water bottle, the umbrella, the cufflinks or the salad spinner.
02:14Any of those take your eye?
02:16Out of every single one of those, you know, they all have equal merits and we just haven't
02:21got the time to go into that, but I mean, the cushion, it'd be lovely to lay my head
02:25down next to your image.
02:27It's a good cushion as well.
02:28Yeah.
02:29More than you think.
02:30That cushion.
02:31Oh, right.
02:32Sarah, what would you go for?
02:33Salad spinner.
02:34Salad?
02:35People like the salad spinner.
02:36I hate a wet lettuce.
02:37Layla?
02:38I would bite you, Kevin, for the cushion.
02:40Really?
02:41Cushion, cushion, cushion.
02:42Salad spinner, John?
02:43Umbrella.
02:44Umbrella.
02:45I'd love to be nestled beneath you on a rainy day.
02:46How lovely.
02:47I would like it as well.
02:48That's romantic.
02:49Shall we get on?
02:50John's won two in a row.
02:51Is he going to win three in a row?
02:52Let's find out, shall we?
02:53With our first round, which is...
02:55Highbrow, lowbrow.
02:56I will go along the line asking you two questions each.
02:58The first question will be a highbrow question that we very rarely get right.
03:06The second one will be lowbrow.
03:07They both have the same answer.
03:09If you get it from the highbrow question, I'll give you two points.
03:11If you get it from the lowbrow question, I'll give you one point.
03:13Your highbrow question, John, is this.
03:19The ancient region of Colchis, where the legendary Argonauts sought the Golden Fleece,
03:23is located east of the Black Sea in which modern-day country?
03:31Oh, if I hadn't dropped out of uni, I would have known this.
03:34Oh, yeah, because this is what they teach you.
03:36This is the second year.
03:37I was doing modern medieval languages and this is on the...
03:39Oh, yeah?
03:40Yeah.
03:41You can guess a country if you wish and we'll move on to the lowbrow.
03:44Black Sea.
03:46Iran?
03:48Iran, you're saying?
03:49Let's take a look at your lowbrow question, see if you want to stick with it.
03:53What's the first name of the Made in Chelsea star in 2017
03:56I'm a Celebrity winner, nicknamed Toph?
04:02I don't watch such programmes.
04:04Leda and Sarah are both poised.
04:07I have to go through all the countries and think of one that could be a nice...
04:10Yeah, go through all the countries and the world, we've got plenty of time.
04:12Turkey?
04:13Hungry?
04:16Um, oh man, I don't know.
04:18Should I time you out?
04:19Yeah, time you out.
04:20Okay, as soon as that goes red, we've got a buzzer race.
04:23Sarah wins the buzzer race.
04:25Georgia.
04:26Georgia is the answer we're looking for.
04:27Georgia, Toplo, Toph and Georgia the country.
04:30Leila, a highbrow question for you now.
04:36Inventions and Reinventions is the subtitle of which 2016 book by US academic Richard W. Bullitt
04:43that examines a key discovery in technological history?
04:46I don't know.
04:52Yeah, I was going to say that's not even one where you can go, I'm going to guess a country.
04:55Yeah.
04:56Shall we just go straight to lowbrow?
04:57Yes.
04:58Your lowbrow question, which has the same answer, is this.
05:01On which Michael McIntyre game show do seven celeb experts try to help members of the public win a cash prize?
05:12I don't know.
05:14Anybody?
05:16Oh, all three of them buzz. Kevin Eldon wins the race.
05:19Is it the wheel?
05:20The wheel?
05:22That's exactly what it is.
05:23Absolutely.
05:26Sarah, I have a highbrow question for you.
05:28Which 1961 play by John Osborne explores the self-doubt of a religious reformer?
05:42You've got the look of someone who has heard of John Osborne and is now thinking,
05:46I wish I'd heard of some plays by him.
05:49It's really generous that you think that's what's going on in my face.
05:53I've got no idea. I don't even know who John Osborne is.
05:56Great. Shall we go straight to lowbrow?
05:58Yeah, might as well give it a stab.
06:01Give it a whirl.
06:02Yeah.
06:03Your lowbrow question is,
06:05Which TV crime drama, first broadcast in 2010, stars Idris Elba as a London police detective?
06:14He's Luther, isn't he?
06:16Luther.
06:17Give yourself a point. Well done.
06:18And Kevin. Kevin, a highbrow question for you.
06:27In Thomas Hardy's novel Jude the Obscure, what is the name of the Wessex town that is a fictionalised version of Salisbury?
06:33I've read it a long time ago.
06:41Going to go lowbrow.
06:42Going to go lowbrow.
06:43In the comic strip of Roy the Rovers, Roy Race plays for a team based in which fictional town?
06:49Didn't know that came from Jude the Obscure. There you go.
06:53No, nor did I.
06:55So we're in fictional town land, are we?
06:57Yeah, we sure are.
06:59It's going to be something like Burnchester or something, isn't it?
07:03But, um...
07:05No, I don't know.
07:07No.
07:08Anyone fancy that?
07:11I only know it as a huge Roy the Rovers fan as a kid.
07:14It's Melchester Rovers.
07:15Melchester, yeah.
07:16Melchester must be the answer to both.
07:18Melchester.
07:19Well done if you said that at home.
07:20We go back now to John.
07:23Another one?
07:24Back to a highbrow question.
07:27Which letter of the alphabet is also the title of a Booker Prize shortlisted dystopian novel by Howard Jacobson
07:33that depicts society after a mysterious cataclysmic event?
07:38Zed.
07:41Zed, you're going to say. That sounds reasonable.
07:43Your lowbrow question is...
07:45In Men in Black, Will Smith's character is known as Agent what?
07:53I think it's...
07:54Oh, is he M?
07:57Oh, er...
07:59I'm going to just go for Zed.
08:00I think so, because that'll be two points if it is.
08:01Yeah, let's go for Zed.
08:02OK, we're sticking with Zed. Is that the right answer?
08:05She's got her finger on her buzzer.
08:06Oh, I thought it was a great answer.
08:08Kevin.
08:09I'm guessing a bit, actually.
08:10Q.
08:11Q.
08:13It's not Q.
08:14Yes, Layla.
08:15X.
08:16Is it X?
08:18It's not all these all sound right when you say that.
08:20She's fast.
08:21Sarah, this is like yesterday when you...
08:22I know, it is, and I'm torn between two.
08:25H.
08:26Is it H?
08:28It's not.
08:29Let's have a look, shall we?
08:30What's the answer?
08:31Well done if you knew this at home.
08:33Jay.
08:34We're away on.
08:35Oh, that's...
08:36That's a weird name for a book.
08:37It is.
08:38Jay was the answer.
08:39Well done if you got that fox dust here.
08:40Layla.
08:41Yay.
08:42For two points, a highbrow question for you.
08:45Which title character of a 1963 Bill Norton play has been played by John Neville in London,
08:51Terence Stamp on Broadway, and Michael Caine on film?
08:57Character.
09:00I...
09:01Oh.
09:02I think I know the film, but it's not...
09:04I've got a blank.
09:05Shall we go to lowbrow?
09:07Oh, go on then.
09:08Yeah, lowbrow?
09:09Yeah, lowbrow.
09:10Here's your lowbrow question.
09:13Which 2007 Lily Allen single is about her younger brother and his layabout lifestyle?
09:21I think it's Alfie.
09:24Alfie?
09:26That's exactly what it is.
09:28Oh, OK.
09:29What's it all about Alfie?
09:30A point to Layla.
09:32Sarah.
09:33A highbrow question.
09:35Here's yours for two points.
09:49Oh, easy.
09:51A hound?
09:52Oh, yeah.
09:53Why not?
09:54A fox and a hound.
09:55Let's take a look at your lowbrow question.
09:56See if hound is the answer to that as well.
09:58What type of animal is the blue video game character known as Sonic?
10:06A hedgehog.
10:07He's a hedgehog.
10:08Absolutely right.
10:09Fox and a hedgehog.
10:10Hedgehog is the answer.
10:11Well done if you've said it at home.
10:12Kevin, our last chance to get a two-pointer.
10:14Let's see if we can do it.
10:15Mrs Rimmel and her daughters Becky, Jane and Maria are characters in which short story by Henry James?
10:29Henry James.
10:32Vanity Fair.
10:33Vanity Fair?
10:34Let's take a look at it.
10:35Well, I can see what a lowbrow question might be for that.
10:37Yes.
10:38Your lowbrow question is...
10:40Which band had a UK number one in 1986 with the final countdown?
10:47Oh, I know the soul.
10:50And it's either Europe or...
10:55That's not a name of a book though, is it?
10:59Er...
11:00Foreigner.
11:02It's not, I'm afraid.
11:04Anyone want to buzz in?
11:06Yes, Leila.
11:07I think it was Europe.
11:08I think it was Europe as well.
11:10Europe is the answer.
11:11I'm so sorry, Kevin.
11:12I like it, Kevin.
11:14Oh, that was gutting.
11:15Final countdown by Europe.
11:17That's the end of the round.
11:18Let's take a look at our first leaderboard of the day.
11:23Our two-time champion, John Waite, currently in fourth, yet to get off the mark.
11:26Kevin, you've got one.
11:27Leila, you've got two.
11:28Sarah Keyworth in the lead with three points.
11:30Well...
11:31That feels good, doesn't it?
11:32Nice.
11:33Top of the board.
11:34So pleased I didn't sleep at all last night.
11:36Yeah, exactly.
11:37Now, let's play a pairs game, shall we?
11:39Our pairs game today is...
11:44Emoji, John, you're in fourth, so you choose a partner.
11:46Who would you like to play this with?
11:47I think I'll stick with Leila.
11:49You're going to stick with Leila.
11:50Leila and John are a team, Sarah and Kevin are a team.
11:53Now, before the show, you sent me the name of a TV show,
11:56but you could only use emojis, OK?
11:58You're now going to have to decipher the emojis of your partner.
12:01So, John, before the show, Leila sent me the name of a TV show,
12:04and she used these emojis, but which TV show is she trying to lead you towards?
12:11Ooh.
12:12Which TV show is that?
12:16Bride, diamond, number one.
12:22Eyes, glasses.
12:24Got it.
12:25You've got it?
12:26Yeah.
12:27You've got it?
12:28Yeah.
12:29Have you got it at home?
12:32Should we time you out, John?
12:33No, please don't.
12:34I'm not ready for that.
12:35I'm not emotionally prepared.
12:37I'm just going to say...
12:38You've led a happy life.
12:39Eyes.
12:40Desperate Housewives.
12:42Is it Desperate Housewives?
12:43Oh, gosh.
12:45It is not.
12:46Anyone on the other team know it?
12:47Married at first sight.
12:48Married at first sight.
12:49Oh, first.
12:50Yeah.
12:51First sight.
12:52Leila.
12:53Someone is married.
12:54That's brilliant.
12:55With a first and then sight.
12:56It makes sense.
12:57Yeah, it makes a lot of sense.
12:58Married at first sight.
12:59Well done if you said that at home.
13:00Sarah, before the show, Kevin,
13:02sent me the name of a television show
13:04using just the medium of emojis,
13:06which is how he likes to communicate.
13:08The only way I communicate.
13:10The only way he communicates.
13:11So this, to him, was perfect.
13:13And this is the TV show that he sent me.
13:20Oh.
13:21Star Trek.
13:22Star Trek?
13:23Very good.
13:24Oh, nice.
13:25Oh, yeah.
13:26Oh, good.
13:27That was a bit of luck.
13:28That was a bit of luck having that one.
13:29That's really...
13:30I didn't know that was there.
13:31Yeah.
13:32Star Trek.
13:33Sometimes they're just in front of you, aren't they?
13:35Star Trek.
13:36Well played Kevin.
13:37Well played Sarah.
13:38Leila, before the show.
13:39John, sent me the name of a TV show.
13:41Sorry, babe.
13:42It's off.
13:43But which TV show is it?
13:49Whoa.
13:50Say what you see.
13:51No.
13:52Is that orange?
13:53Oh, orange is the new black.
13:55Oh, yes.
13:56Orange is the new black.
13:57Yes.
13:58Oh, well done.
13:59Yes.
14:00Orange, black.
14:01What's the famous one?
14:02Justice.
14:03Justice.
14:04Oh, yes.
14:05And a women's prison.
14:06Yeah.
14:07Lovely.
14:08The universal sign for a women's prison.
14:09Kevin.
14:10Yes.
14:11Before the show, Sarah sent me a TV show.
14:14Which TV show is this, please?
14:18Oh.
14:19Oh, I know what this is.
14:21Something I've seen nearly every episode of.
14:23It looks like The Walking Dead.
14:25Walking Dead.
14:27Beautiful.
14:28Some great emoji work from everybody there.
14:30Yeah, an exception.
14:31The Walking Dead was the answer.
14:33Well done if you got that at home.
14:34Well done if you got four out of four at home.
14:36Possible today, I think, because there's such good emojis.
14:39Sometimes literally impossible.
14:41But today, some good emoji work from everyone.
14:44And let's take a look at its effect on the leaderboard.
14:49John has got one.
14:50Lady and Kevin, three each.
14:51Sarah, two-point lead now with five points.
14:56And our next round is...
14:57It's all in the name.
15:03Fingers on buzzers again now.
15:05All the answers in this round are in the letters of your names.
15:07Oh.
15:08OK.
15:09The first two will be in the letters of John's names,
15:11then Layla's names and so on.
15:12You get a point for a correct answer.
15:14John, you get two points if you get one on your name.
15:16So somewhere within those letters,
15:18you'll find the answers to these questions.
15:20If you can get it, two points if John can.
15:23Band whose hits include My Generation and Pinball Wizard.
15:30That's Kevin.
