00:00It's been days of non-stop rallies here in Italy, including on Wednesday and Thursday,
00:05when thousands took to the streets in response to the Flottilla blockade
00:08and the arrest of several Italian activists.
00:12Italy's main union, GGL, which had announced a strike,
00:15saying that they would take to the streets if the Flottilla were blocked,
00:21said that they've called this general strike to, quote,
00:25defend the rights of those Italian citizens who have been unlawfully detained
00:32and whose constitutional rights have been violated.
00:35I'm currently standing here in Piazza dei Cinquecento, nearby Rome's main railway station,
00:43which has been redubbed Piazza Gaza, Gaza Square, by the protest organizers
00:49who have turned this place into the permanent camp.
00:53And, in fact, this place has become, if you will, the hotspot of these demonstrations.
00:59Now, this is the second general strike in less than two weeks
01:04that is going to disrupt both the private and public sectors in the next 24 hours.
01:10Education, logistics, transport will also be heavily affected,
01:16although some essential services will still be running.
01:22Now, next to union representatives, students and representatives of pro-Palestinian groups,
01:28have also joined the rally today here in Rome.
01:32It's been estimated that thousands of people have joined the event today.
01:39They're mainly demanding that the government protect the Flottilla and its members
01:44and that the government take a firm stance against Israel's military operations in Gaza.
01:50Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgio Meloni, says that these protests have been organized
01:56mainly to protest against the government rather than in support of Gaza.
02:01Another big rally is planned here in the Italian capital on Saturday.
02:06Giorgio Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
