00:00On Bargain Hunt, we love looking back at the fashion that defined the decades.
00:06It's the perfect excuse to dress up.
00:09Like a fabulous flapper girl from the 1920s.
00:14Or in the boho style of the 60s and 70s.
00:19I reckon I'd wear this now.
00:20And later, I'll be meeting a dapper young man
00:23who takes dressing in period costume to a whole new level.
00:28But first, it's time to see if today's teams look the part.
00:33Let's go bargain hunting.
00:34Today's Reds and Blues can't wait to start shopping for bargains
01:00at this jam-packed antiques fair in Ardinglai.
01:04Each team is given £300 but just 60 minutes to buy three items here at the fair.
01:10One must cost at least £75.
01:13And they'll also have to meet my shopping challenge.
01:16Then they'll be off to auction and the team that makes the bigger profit
01:19or the smaller loss will be crowned today's winners.
01:24Let's meet today's teams.
01:26Well, hey.
01:26I'm Keely.
01:27And I'm Sohesh.
01:28We're ready for take-off.
01:29And sky's the limit.
01:31How did you two meet?
01:32We've known each other for about 16 years.
01:35I can't get rid of her.
01:36But no, I love her to bits.
01:38What kind of team will you be?
01:40We're going to be the best team.
01:41We listen to each other or he listens to me.
01:46And who'll be in charge?
01:48Well, me, of course.
01:49Definitely Keely by country world.
01:52Are you here to win?
01:54Oh, God, yes.
01:55We win a golden gavel.
01:56That's what we really, really want.
01:57Aiming high, Reds.
01:59Right, let's meet the opposition.
02:01Hi, I'm Becca.
02:03And I'm Mike.
02:03And we're here to tick off some deals.
02:05And teach the Reds a lesson.
02:06You're teachers, I take it?
02:09We were at school together.
02:11And then we happened to end up working together.
02:13Bumped into each other in the same school.
02:14And it's like, oh, hello.
02:16What's on your shopping list?
02:18You like things that you would like to take home.
02:20Yeah.
02:20I'm just really after a bargain.
02:22So who's the boss?
02:23I think it's going to be Becca.
02:25I hope it's Becca.
02:26Yeah.
02:27Are you competitive?
02:29I'm not good at losing.
02:30Even if we play a game of cards at home and I win,
02:34he's like, no, we've got to play again.
02:35I think we're in for some fun today.
02:37Let's get started.
02:38Hi, teams.
02:40Hey.
02:41How's it going?
02:42I'm very well.
02:43You're up for this, Reds?
02:44Absolutely.
02:45Oh, yeah.
02:46Absolutely.
02:46Can't wait.
02:46Blues, you're going to say the same, right?
02:48Absolutely.
02:49Yep, we're up for it.
02:50I will give each team £300.
02:52Who will take it for the Reds?
02:53Keely.
02:54I will take that.
02:54Keely, why are you in charge of the money?
02:56Thank you very much.
02:57Because I'm the sensible one.
02:58Ah, OK.
03:00So who's the sensible one for the Blues?
03:02That would be me.
03:02Becca.
03:03Definitely not me.
03:04I'm a woman.
03:04OK.
03:05So, Sahesh, you're not sensible, but you're getting a challenge.
03:09And same for you, Mike.
03:11Right.
03:11The best part is introducing you to your experts.
03:13I love this bit.
03:14Are you ready to meet them?
03:15Absolutely.
03:15Yes, they are.
03:16Well, they're keen to meet you, so off you go.
03:19They're off to meet their absolutely delightful experts,
03:21but what do they think makes a good one?
03:25Someone who's up for fun.
03:26Someone who can give us a bit of guidance.
03:30Someone who can pilot us to a victory.
03:32OK, team, are you ready for flight?
03:35For the Reds, it's Danny Sebastian.
03:39And someone that can make us profit.
03:41Rebecca and Mike, I will do my best.
03:44And for the Blues, it's Kate Bliss.
03:48Time to reveal my challenges.
03:51An item that's at least 100 years old.
03:53Wow.
03:54An item designed to be used outdoors.
03:58The pressure's on, teams.
04:00Your 60 minutes start now.
04:02Let's go!
04:03Let's go!
04:04Come on!
04:05Both teams are off to a keen start.
04:08And the Reds are already thinking about my challenge.
04:12The Windsor chair.
04:14Very nice.
04:15Oak.
04:16Well, I'll tell you what, we can double up on this one
04:18because it's definitely going to fulfil our challenge 100 years old.
04:22Yeah, it's circa 1900.
04:25And secondly, I'd imagine at that price, which is 225,
04:29it would fill our big spend.
04:31I mean, what sort of money can this be?
04:32Best, best, best we could do would be 180.
04:35With 180.
04:36I think 180.
04:37Oh, I think it might be a little bit much for us.
04:40Nice try, Reds.
04:43The Blues are also starting with their challenge to find an outdoor item.
04:47They've got detail to us.
04:50They have.
04:51For me, they look a little bit more modern.
04:53They're like the kind of Chinese dogs of foe, if you like.
04:56The guard dogs or...
04:58With a bit of paint spilt on them as well.
05:00Oh, well spotted.
05:02The cherub bed bath.
05:04It looks like there's been a...
05:06Bit of a smash.
05:07Yeah, I don't...
05:08It's not particularly balanced, is it, anymore?
05:10No.
05:11Yeah.
05:11Let's keep looking.
05:12Good plan.
05:14Now, what's got Keely's eye?
05:17Anything take your fancy?
05:18We've got some vintage jewellery in here.
05:211950s filigree brooch.
05:24Is that silver, that one?
05:25It hasn't got that.
05:26I don't think that's silver.
05:27No, it's not got that.
05:28It's not got that look about it, has it?
05:30What's the price on it?
05:31So that one's £10.
05:32You're moving on now, I could tell this was happening.
05:37Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:38Danny steers the reds away, while the blues have headed indoors.
05:43Is that a fruit knife?
05:44Yeah, it is.
05:45That is lovely, because it's in its box.
05:48Is it Mother of Pearl?
05:49It is, yeah.
05:50So we've got Mother of Pearl, and we've got a little silver blade,
05:55which is hallmarked there.
05:57I really like that.
05:58Which is lovely.
05:59And actually, the blade is in really nice condition.
06:02So a little fruit knife, got a little bit of decoration.
06:04See the stripes on it?
06:05Yes.
06:06That's actually been carved into the Mother of Pearl.
06:09And the fact is, it's not gone rusty,
06:11because so many of them do, don't they?
06:14They do.
06:15So we've got clear hallmarks for Sheffield.
06:17I think that's Victorian, actually.
06:20How much is that one?
06:21Well, I'm on £100 for it to normal people, yeah.
06:24But I'll do it for a bit of fun for you.
06:25I'll do it for £45.
06:26£45?
06:27They are sought after, I have to say.
06:29And I would put sort of £40 to £80 on it at auction.
06:34It's got the box as well, which is a real bonus.
06:37I think that's a good start.
06:38Yeah, I do.
06:39I think we've got a deal.
06:40Yeah.
06:41£45, are you happy with that?
06:42Thank you very much.
06:44Good work, Blues.
06:46The Fruit Knife is your first buy,
06:48with just under 15 minutes on the clock.
06:50Fantastic, guys.
06:51So, challenge Big Spend.
06:53Yeah, let's go.
06:54This way.
06:55Meanwhile, are the Reds clowning around?
06:58It's like a little, like a music box, isn't it?
07:00Music box, yeah.
07:01You wind it up, once that's pressed in,
07:03I think it's a bit, hmm.
07:05There's no way to it, do I think?
07:06There's no way to it?
07:07No.
07:07Oh, no.
07:07I'm not.
07:08Yeah, I'm not.
07:09I don't like that.
07:10This is not what we're looking for.
07:12The search continues for the Reds.
07:15What has Mike spotted?
07:17What have you got, Mike?
07:18Is it a toy, or is it...?
07:21I'm not too sure.
07:22There's a lot of age to it, looking at the wheels.
07:23Yeah, it's got age to it.
07:24I've got age.
07:25How old do you think it is?
07:26It's got to be 70s, I reckon.
07:2870s?
07:28And how much are you looking for?
07:29I had the right on it.
07:30At the end of the day now, I could do £23 on it.
07:32£20.
07:33OK.
07:34It's quite unusual.
07:34No, I think we park it.
07:36Yeah, park it?
07:37Park it, maybe?
07:37You're not sure?
07:38No.
07:38The toy car is a no for now.
07:42What's next for you, Reds?
07:44What about the candlestick?
07:47It'd be nice if there was two of those.
07:50I think one on its own just might not really cut them.
07:54And would that base be authentic?
07:55No, that base has definitely been added.
07:58Yeah.
07:59No, I don't think so.
08:00No, it's not doing it.
08:00No, I wish there was two of them.
08:02Good advice from Danny, but you do still need your first buy, team.
08:07Let's go in this big shed.
08:08There's quite a few in there.
08:09Come on, let's step up a little bit.
08:11Let's go.
08:11Come on.
08:12With the spring in their step, can the Reds pin their hopes on some silver?
08:17I quite like this.
08:18Oh, do you?
08:19And that's a little modern pincushion with glass eyes.
08:23Is it silver?
08:24Silver.
08:24Stamped silver, yes.
08:26Yeah, it's stamped 925.
08:27That's what we want to see, really, a British silver mark.
08:30It's quite nice.
08:31I mean, you know, they're quite fashionable.
08:33There's quite a lot of people who do sewing and that sort of thing.
08:36It's nice, it's novelty, and people collect pincushions.
08:39It's beautiful, yeah.
08:40Is it cheap?
08:41Well, I've been on 60 for it.
08:43I'll do it for £35, give you the chance.
08:46Knock a bit more off for us.
08:48I'll lose a fiver because I like use a fiver.
08:50Oh, bless you.
08:52I think she'll shake his hand.
08:53Yeah.
08:53No, it's very much.
08:55Thank you very much.
08:57The silver pincushion is your first buy.
09:00Well done, Reds.
09:01But I'll tell you what, we'll be 25 minutes in.
09:04Yes.
09:04All right, Ben.
09:05Let's go, let's go, let's go.
09:06We've still got the challenge, we've still got the big spend.
09:08Yeah.
09:08We've got a lot of work to do.
09:09Okay.
09:10So while Danny cracks the whip, the Blues have found this.
09:15That looks like a baton to me, or a swagger stick.
09:18Swagger stick.
09:19So it's a stick that gentlemen had, Georgian gentlemen, or 19th century Victorian people,
09:24just as a sort of fashionable accoutrement.
09:27And a lovely turned wooden stick there.
09:33It's definitely a silver mount.
09:35And we've got Royal Engineers.
09:37Yeah.
09:37E.M. Paul, R.E.
09:39The engraving looks really clear.
09:41Mm.
09:42So maybe it was used on a parade ground.
09:47Do you like it?
09:48What do you think?
09:49I like that it's different.
09:50Yeah.
09:51How much is this, please?
09:53I've got it up to £70, but it's snakewood.
09:55It's snakewood, is it?
09:56It is snakewood.
09:57It's very, very unusual.
09:59What would be the best on that, please?
10:02I don't want to come down much.
10:03I'd knock a tenner off it and make it £60.
10:05My worry is how commercial it's going to be at an auction.
10:09Shall we have a think?
10:10Yeah.
10:10We can always come back.
10:11Yeah.
10:11Could be a contender for your big spend, though, Blues.
10:15Back to the Reds as they hunt for their 100-year-old challenge.
10:19What do you think about glass items?
10:21Glass is good.
10:22I just think with glass, it needs to be a big piece if it's going to auction.
10:28Preferably with a name like White Friars, Aurifons, Murano, something like that.
10:34It really needs to be.
10:35Otherwise, when it goes to auction, I think it's going to get lost.
10:39OK.
10:40While Danny dishes out the advice, what have you found, Blues?
10:45What is it?
10:46A shaker?
10:47Yeah, so that's a little pepperette.
10:49Chinese silver rickshaw condiment set made in Hong Kong.
10:52So this would have been on a table, and it could be a lower grade of silver to sterling silver,
11:00because it's Chinese.
11:01But you've got your little salt, pepper, and probably a little mustard or condiment in there,
11:07and you could wheel it up and down the table.
11:10It's quite light, isn't it?
11:12But it's actually quite a nice novelty, a little thing.
11:15It's marked silver.
11:17Yes.
11:17You're never going to get marks like you would on an English hallmark, with the date letter
11:25and the maker's mark, because they mark them differently.
11:28So it's more buying it as a little novelty piece.
11:31Is it something that appeals to you, or not really?
11:33I actually know.
11:34I like the fact that it's quirky and different.
11:38I think that's really nice.
11:39I think you're more taken than I am, but I like the novelty side.
11:43What is the best price on that?
11:45The very best I can do is $60.
11:47And it does come, you can have the original box as well.
11:51OK.
11:51Well, that's something to think about.
11:53It's definitely something to think about.
11:54So it's a maybe for the silver condiment set.
11:58What about, like, toys, dolls?
12:03Yes, Keely, those dolls do look over 100 years old.
12:07Well, really, what you're looking for when it comes to dolls is porcelain ones.
12:12OK.
12:13Antique French doll.
12:15On the back of the neck sometimes you find the name, especially if they're German.
12:19But this one hasn't got it.
12:21I mean, it seems quite rich to me at $135.
12:24I was, yeah, I was thinking the same.
12:27Shall we move on?
12:27Yeah, let's move on.
12:29It would meet both of your challenges, though, Reds.
12:34With 20 minutes left, the teams are level pegging with their challenge and big spend left to find.
12:40Something to be used outdoors, something to be used outdoors.
12:43Just wondering, there's a little bag down there, a little vintage bag.
12:47That's designed for use outside.
12:50Does the clasp work?
12:51Let's have a look, Mike.
12:54And is it a...
12:55Does it twist?
12:56That's it.
12:58Nice.
12:58Nice, you've got the key.
12:59I mean, it's indoors and outdoors, but it's definitely designed for travel.
13:04Travel, absolutely.
13:04Which is outdoors.
13:05They're known as Gladstone bags, actually, named after Gladstone, the Prime Minister.
13:11And they're usually used by doctors because they can open up so widely because they've got a metal frame on them.
13:19Yeah.
13:19And then, you know, you can use it almost like a tray so a doctor could get at all his medicines and bits and pieces.
13:27Little brass, little cartouche there, which probably would have been engraved with initials, but actually the leather is in really good order.
13:38I think that's different.
13:40Yeah, it is.
13:41It would depend on the price, wouldn't it?
13:42How much is it, Lisa?
13:4420?
13:45Make us fall in love with it.
13:4615.
13:48I don't think we can say no at 15.
13:50Happy, Becca?
13:50Yeah, I'm happy.
13:51You sure?
13:52Yeah.
13:5215 pounds.
13:54Good man.
13:55Nice work, Blues.
13:56The Gladstone bag is your second buy and meets my challenge.
14:00Fantastic.
14:01Well done, you guys.
14:04Right, Reds, you're playing catch up.
14:06What have you found, Sahesh?
14:08Is it brass or copper?
14:11It's not that heavy.
14:13That is brass.
14:14What would you do with it?
14:16Plants.
14:17Planter.
14:17Ice bucket.
14:18Ice bucket.
14:19Even better.
14:20The old champagne.
14:21I'm thinking about the old champagne.
14:22That's right.
14:23Would that clean off?
14:24I guess that would clean off.
14:25A bit of patina.
14:26A bit of patina.
14:27Well, it would clean.
14:28It's just a bit of age, isn't it, really?
14:30Yeah.
14:31You know, there's been better and there's also worse.
14:34I think it's a bit later than 100 years old, to be honest.
14:37Okay.
14:38What's your best?
14:3970 quid.
14:4070 quid.
14:42I think that's too rich for us.
14:43Yeah.
14:4370 quid.
14:44Come on.
14:44Okay, let's go.
14:45Come on.
14:47The Blues just need one more buy and Becca's taking a shine to this.
14:52I quite like this little bowl and spoon here.
14:56So that is Danish silver by the look of things and enamels.
14:59I think it's really pretty.
15:00We haven't seen anything like that since we've been going around.
15:03So is it for salt?
15:05It's exactly that, yes.
15:06Salt, centuries ago, was very highly prized.
15:10But this is more a decorative thing for the table.
15:13You've got the box.
15:14It's obviously all original because it fits really nicely in there.
15:17You've got the spoon.
15:18I mean, these are collectible.
15:20So we've got the name for Mecca, which was a Danish manufacturer here.
15:26And it's marked and marked for Danish and sterling.
15:30So we know it's sterling standard.
15:32Right.
15:33The enamel is in wonderful condition.
15:36It's just all about the price, really.
15:38What could you do for us on this?
15:40Um, $130 would be the death.
15:42Would it?
15:42Yeah, very limited on that, I'm afraid.
15:44If it was $110, $120, I would.
15:48I think at auction it is going to be a bit much, isn't it?
15:51Too big, even for your big spend, team.
15:54Now, Reds, could these rusty kitchen items meet my 100-year-old challenge?
15:59And what about that pot there?
16:01What is that?
16:02This looks like, is it a chestnut burner or something like that description?
16:07What's one of them, Gov?
16:08Coffee roasting pan.
16:10Coffee roasting pan.
16:11How much is it?
16:12Very far.
16:13It's definitely sort of 1920s, round that sort of...
16:16Would you prefer this or would you prefer the chair?
16:20I reckon this.
16:22Yeah.
16:22Because this looks the part.
16:24Let's get this.
16:25Let's get it out of the way.
16:26I think get this out of the way and worry about the big spend.
16:29Yeah.
16:29Hey, what's the best on this, Gov?
16:31Come on.
16:3325.
16:3425.
16:35All the twos?
16:3525.
16:36We'll take it.
16:37It's a deal.
16:39The coffee roasting pan is the Reds' second buy and meets my challenge.
16:43Well done.
16:44We've still got the big spend to buy.
16:46Yeah.
16:46And we've probably got about 10 minutes left.
16:48Come on, let's go.
16:49Come on.
16:49We ain't got time.
16:50Come on.
16:51Teams, you're neck and neck.
16:54With your big spends left to find and less than 10 minutes to go.
16:58What we want is something that's quite weighty, something of quality.
17:01I mean, that looks a nice little box.
17:04We've got the date on it, 1903 Middleton Hall.
17:08And I love these because they're so tactile.
17:11So it looks just like a lovely oval.
17:13It feels lovely in your hands.
17:14It's got that pebbled look to it.
17:15Exactly.
17:16So you have to squeeze and it pings open.
17:20Bound in 1902, Williams Limited.
17:23So it's Edward VII.
17:25Yeah, we've got clear crisp call marks.
17:27I really like that.
17:29Out of everything that we're seeing, I think that's got potential.
17:33It's marked at 120.
17:34They might give us a good deal.
17:36We're looking at this.
17:37I'm just wondering, what would be your best price on this?
17:41The TNS 120 at the moment.
17:42Yeah, 80.
17:4380?
17:44Could you do it for 79?
17:46It gives us a chance if it hits 80.
17:48Yeah.
17:48Would you mind?
17:48Fair enough.
17:49Absolutely.
17:50Thank you very much.
17:50That's a great discount.
17:51Thank you very much.
17:52And thank you ever so much.
17:53Great negotiating blues.
17:55The silver snuff box is your big spend and final buy.
17:59We've done it.
18:00Yes.
18:01We've done it.
18:02Amongst all the cranking and the packing up.
18:04We've done it.
18:04Well done.
18:06Come on, Reds.
18:07Your turn.
18:09We're running out of minutes.
18:10What are you after?
18:11Well, we'll...
18:12It's a big spend.
18:13We'll want to spend some money with your...
18:15Is that your van?
18:16Yeah.
18:17We might be struggling here.
18:19I sense panic.
18:21Mmm.
18:22I think the only thing you've got here that might stand a chance is that pine table.
18:28Do you like pine tables?
18:29Yeah.
18:30It's functional.
18:33It's a nice side.
18:34It's practical.
18:35Nice proportion.
18:36What do you reckon?
18:36It's nice.
18:37Yeah, it's beautiful.
18:38I think if you go to a nice, like, cosy place, this would be perfect for the kitchen.
18:42That drawer is really useful.
18:44And there's nothing, anything to it.
18:46There's no damage or anything.
18:47How much is that table?
18:48I have 130 on it, but you could have it for 75.
18:52It's a very good discount.
18:53It's a very good discount off the active price that he was selling it for.
18:56I think we've found our big buy.
18:57I think we've done it lost, but we've done it well.
19:00Thank you very much, sir.
19:01OK, thank you.
19:02Thank you very much.
19:02Well, that was lucky, Reds.
19:05The pine table for £75 is your big spend, just in the nick of time.
19:10And relax, teams.
19:12The shopping's done.
19:13We've done it.
19:14Come on, let's go and get a coffee.
19:15Let's go.
19:15Or a cold drink, at least.
19:17Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.
19:21They started with a silver pin cushion.
19:23Price paid, £30.
19:26Next, they met my 100-year-old challenge with an early 20th century coffee roasting pan
19:32for £25.
19:35Finally, they spent big on a pine kitchen table for £75.
19:41Sahesh, Keeley, Danny, you've done it.
19:43You almost used every minute available.
19:46Absolutely.
19:47And to complete the full bargain hunt experience,
19:49you bought something off the back of a van.
19:51Yes.
19:51We did.
19:53Now, be honest, was that Danny's influence?
19:55It was.
19:56Well, yeah.
19:57It is.
19:58Tell me, Sahesh, first of all, which is your favourite of the three items?
20:02Mine was the table off the back of the van.
20:04The table.
20:04I loved it.
20:05I think once it came out, it was beautiful.
20:07Which do you reckon is going to bring the biggest profit?
20:09I think it will be the silver pin cushion.
20:11Oh, the duck.
20:12I love duck stuff.
20:14It's so cute.
20:15Right, Keeley, are you on the same page?
20:17Which is your favourite?
20:18So, my favourite was the pin cushion.
20:20It was beautiful.
20:21But tell me which you think will bring the biggest profit.
20:23I think I'm on the same page as Sahesh.
20:25I think that that may bring us the biggest profit.
20:29OK, interesting.
20:30Now, you spent £130 on the nose.
20:34So, who has £170 for Danny?
20:36I have.
20:37So, hand it over.
20:38Danny, £170 is a lot of dosh.
20:41A lot of dosh.
20:42Do you have a lot of thoughts?
20:43I don't know what I'm going to do.
20:45Ooh.
20:46I don't know.
20:46But it's a great fair and there's plenty to choose from.
20:49So, Danny's off to find a bonus pie for the Reds.
20:52And it's time for us to remind ourselves what the blue team bought.
20:56This silver Mother of Pearl handled fruit knife was their first buy for £45.
21:03Next, the leather Gladstone bag met my item designed for outside challenge.
21:09£15 paid.
21:11And they finished with their big spend.
21:13A silver snuff box with gilt interior for £79.
21:19Mike, Becca, Kate, you did it.
21:21Well done.
21:22Did you expect it to go so swimmingly?
21:25We did have a plan and we didn't stick to it at all.
21:27So, we've got three things that we didn't plan to buy.
21:30But, yeah, we had fun.
21:31Tell me, first of all, Mike, which is your favourite item?
21:33I think it's got to be the fruit knife with the Mother of Pearl engrave.
21:37It's really nice, really pretty.
21:39Which of the items will bring the biggest profit?
21:41I think, again, the Mother of Pearl fruit knife.
21:43I think it was really well-priced in the end and it's so pretty in its box.
21:48Right.
21:48What about you, Becca?
21:49Tell me, which is your favourite?
21:50I actually agree with both, with Mike, because it was something so nice, unique and it's
21:57something you spotted, which was really lovely.
21:59Oh, good.
22:00So, you think that will bring the biggest profit too?
22:01Yeah.
22:02OK.
22:02Now, you spent £139, I think it was £139, is that right?
22:06Yeah.
22:06That's right.
22:06So, £161 in your pocket.
22:08Becca, are you still in charge of the money?
22:10I am.
22:10You are.
22:11So, please pass it over to Kate.
22:13There we are.
22:14Great.
22:15Kate, what are you thinking?
22:16Well, hopefully something that you'll both like.
22:19Oh, a bit of a crowd pleaser.
22:20Yeah.
22:20OK.
22:21So, Kate's off to find a bonus buy for the blues and it's time for me to meet a gentleman
22:25who has a penchant for period fashion.
22:27The Regency era of the early 1800s brought us grand classical architecture and elaborate
22:38costumes, from satin and lace-trim dresses for women to towering top hats and tailored
22:44waistcoats for men.
22:46It's a period that fascinates Zach Pinsent and for him, channeling the elegance and flair
22:52of the Regency era has become a whole way of life.
22:56Zach, look at you.
22:57Here at the fair, bringing antiques to life.
23:01You look incredible.
23:02Oh, well, thank you very, very much.
23:04It's a pleasure to be here.
23:05And this is an everyday look for you, isn't it?
23:06This is morning till night.
23:09Every day of the year, you're on holiday, you're in the pub, you're with your friends.
23:13You're dressed like this.
23:14Absolutely.
23:15You know, airport security find me very interesting.
23:18Oh, yeah, they do.
23:19They must say, what are you going to film?
23:21It's like, what are those?
23:22These are spurs.
23:23Sorry.
23:24You know?
23:25Yes, you'll have to take those off.
23:27We want to know, of course, where did it all start?
23:30Well, it's interesting because every child loves dressing up and I just never really stopped.
23:35When we moved house when I was 14, I found my great granddad's clothes upstairs in the loft from the 1920s and they fitted me perfectly.
23:43And then I thought to myself, why do I dress any other way?
23:47Did it cost your family a fortune keeping you in period costume?
23:51No, not so much because it started off with me repairing vintage pieces, finding vintage pieces, and then from repairing things went to actually then making pieces.
24:01So you have become a period costume tailor.
24:05Where did you learn this craft?
24:06Well, I'm all self-taught.
24:08So it meant a lot of research going to the National Archives, various museums, and to a large extent, trial and error being my own teacher and apprentice.
24:18What's wonderful is that it gives you a real appreciation of how clothing is made and how it's constructed and how it's changed over time.
24:25So, for example, with an original piece like this from probably the 1770s, the fabric itself, some of it has deteriorated, but the workmanship, the stitching, is still wonderfully secure and actually still almost wearable.
24:39As you can see, you've just got such exuberance in colour.
24:42This would have been the height of fashion.
24:44You had to wear your wealth, didn't you?
24:47You had to show everyone that not only were you wealthy, you were in the know, you were fashionable, you were up to date with what was going on at the court.
24:54Well, exactly. I mean, something like this, where you've got this wonderful velvet, but then lined with a contrasting shot silk lining, would have been incredibly fashionable, but also give a nice bit of character when you were walking around.
25:05This is the wonderful thing, especially about period clothing.
25:08Everything was made bespoke for you and had your own touch to it.
25:12Things were repaired left, right and centre.
25:14George III had pieces of clothing which were darned and fixed and mended because clothing always had an intrinsic value.
25:22Rather than now, we're used to throwing things away with the fast fashion of it.
25:26I believe recently, though, there was an interesting collaboration with the National Gallery.
25:31That was really a highlight of anything I've done in my career so far.
25:35So, it was part of their 200th anniversary and it was to create a piece from The Morning Walk and it was The Gentleman's Outfit.
25:45And, of course, The Morning Walk, I remember from my studies, Gainsborough, an incredible painting.
25:49So, this must be Mr Hallett.
25:50Precisely.
25:51So, what's the process?
25:52You have the Gainsborough portrait as your point of reference, but how do you work backwards from that to create Mr Hallett's suit?
25:58I will look a lot at original surviving pieces, pattern drafts, but also portraiture to then have the ability to draft something and then you've got to sort of cut it out with scissors and then, of course, you've got to hand sew it all together.
26:11And is this typical for you to use art historical references from not just visual art but maybe literature as well?
26:17Absolutely.
26:18And, of course, one of the most interesting, one of the most influential Regency writers, of course, Jane Austen, very rarely mentions clothing in her novels.
26:27And, in fact, Mr Darcy, in Jane Austen's mind, wouldn't have looked like Colin Firth because the Mr Darcy she had in her mind would have probably been wearing a wig and a suit not too dissimilar to this.
26:39There's no way our viewers aren't now thinking, where do I buy period costume, authentic pieces?
26:45So, what would you advise? Antiques fairs like this or go-to auction?
26:49You're more likely to find things at sort of specialist auctions. You may find the occasional thing around and about.
26:54And, in fact, I did pick this lovely original waistcoat up at auction as well as some other pieces.
26:59There are still plenty of attics with things hidden away.
27:01Ah, yes. OK. And wouldn't we all just love a rummage?
27:04Oh, yes.
27:05It's been really lovely to chat with you, Zach. I feel terribly underdressed.
27:09But thank you for joining us on Bargain Hunt. That's really been fascinating.
27:13And just keep doing what you're doing. You look fabulous.
27:16It's been an absolute pleasure.
27:17But it's time now to find out, are our teams dressed for success as we head to the auction?
27:25It's always a great pleasure when I get to say I'm in the company of Tim Weeks.
27:29And I am now. Tim, thank you for having Bargain Hunt.
27:31Pleasure. Welcome.
27:32We'll start with Keeley and Sahesh. Great friends.
27:35And now their new best friend is Danny Sebastian.
27:38And it was Keeley who said, I like the look of this duck.
27:42Animals and auctions just go together hand in hand, don't they?
27:44It's silver. It's contemporary. Mark 925. I like it.
27:48What's your estimate?
27:49I've put 25 to 40.
27:5030 was paid. Let's quack on. Let's move on to my challenge.
27:55An item that's at least 100 years old.
27:57They've ticked it off with this antique coffee grinder, roasting tin.
28:02They are charming. And I think now's the right time.
28:04Coffee's so popular. There's a market for coffee collectors.
28:07I've put 20 to 30.
28:0825 paid.
28:09Yeah, OK. We're about...
28:10OK. So far, it's there or thereabouts.
28:13Now, this is the big spend, obviously.
28:15I love items like...
28:16You know, in Wiltshire, you get lots of farmhouses.
28:18And that's where I picture this going.
28:20Very rustic in its style.
28:21I love the draw.
28:22You've got the dovetail finish as well.
28:24It's in good order.
28:25If it's 60 to 80...
28:26Oh, 75 pounds.
28:28That's good.
28:28This could be golden gavel territory.
28:30You know what? It could be golden gavel territory.
28:32That's exciting.
28:33Well, I'm sure the Blues will be keen to get their hands on one too.
28:37Kate Bliss led Becca and Mike around.
28:39And they started off with a bargain hunt classic.
28:41It's the fruit knife elevated by its little case, this one.
28:44You've highlighted what is, for me, the most important thing,
28:47to have the fitted case.
28:48It really does add to it.
28:49It's also silver.
28:50Hallmark Sheffield, 1895.
28:52You've got the mother-of-pearl handle.
28:54Really nice.
28:55£30 to £50.
28:5645 paid.
28:57OK. I was hoping it was going to be £35, if I'm honest.
28:59Oh, yeah.
29:00OK.
29:00My challenge was an item designed to be used outside,
29:04so the doctor on the go needs his Gladstone-style bag.
29:08It's leather.
29:09It's in nice order.
29:10It's well-used, but I like an antique to be well-used.
29:12I want a bit of patina.
29:13I want a bit of wear.
29:14But having that key, I'm hoping,
29:15is what's just going to help me when I'm bringing it to the cell room.
29:18I put £25 to £40.
29:20£15 paid.
29:21Oh, that's nice.
29:22For such a nice piece.
29:23That's really nice.
29:23Yeah, the Blues have gone really classic antique and they continue that theme with their snuffbox.
29:28It's all about the shape.
29:30And it's a substantial piece of silver, that is.
29:32Having the graving Middleton Hall, assayed Birmingham 1902, it's a really nice piece in good order.
29:39So, what's your estimate on what must be the big spend?
29:41£80 to £120.
29:41So, £79 paid.
29:43Nice.
29:44Could it be golden gavels all round?
29:45There's a chance, isn't there?
29:46I think it's down to me.
29:47Oh.
29:48I hate that.
29:49No, I love that.
29:50Because you hold their hopes and dreams in your hands.
29:54Stop it.
29:54No pressure.
29:56£90, £95, £100, make it £110.
29:59£110, are we all sure and happy?
30:02I will sell then.
30:04Gavels raised.
30:04Keeley, Sahesh, Danny, is this your normal environment?
30:09Well, it is for Danny, but what about you?
30:10Have you been to auction before?
30:11Never been to an auction before, now I'm excited.
30:14Okay, baptism of fire.
30:16Right, this is your lot, it's your first, it's your duck, it is a pin cushion and it was nothing at £30.
30:22Here we go.
30:23Start me just £30.
30:24£30 to start us, £30 in the room, £32 online.
30:27Oh, yes, probably.
30:28Yes, yes, yes.
30:30£34, £36, £38, £40, £42.
30:34£40, £40, £40, £40, £40, £40, £40, £50, £50, £50.
30:40It's £55 in my room, £60.
30:43Yes.
30:43Come on.
30:45£65.
30:47It's £60 online.
30:49Are we all sure lots of interest?
30:52Gavels raised, selling at £60.
30:55Well done.
30:56Yes!
30:57Well done.
30:58Well done.
30:59We'll take that.
31:00Excellent.
31:00Well, I have to say, it's a promising start.
31:02You've instantly doubled your money.
31:03That is a £30 profit.
31:05Lovely.
31:06Hey, brilliant.
31:07It's so good.
31:08The next lot was a nice way to fulfil my challenge.
31:12An item that's at least 100 years old.
31:14We can safely say that about this lovely roasting tin, be it for coffee or nuts, whatever you want
31:19to put in it.
31:19You spent £25.
31:21Here it comes.
31:22I'm looking for £20, £20, £20, £24, £26, £28, £26 you're in, in the room.
31:31£28, back in.
31:32Yes, yes, yes, yes.
31:34£30, £32, £34.
31:37It's £32 in my room.
31:40My gavel is now raised.
31:41Are we all sure and done?
31:42Still a chick, love.
31:43Absolutely.
31:44Come on, come on, come on.
31:45Selling then, at £32.
31:49Yes!
31:50£32, fantastic.
31:53It should be high fives all round because that's a £7 profit, so £30 becomes £37 and you're
31:58one profit away from a golden gavel.
32:01It's nice.
32:01That's the goal.
32:02It's basic.
32:03Yes, let's go.
32:04But it's probably your biggest hurdle to overcome because we're now moving on to your big spend.
32:08Yes.
32:08This table, I'm looking forward to seeing how it does.
32:11£75, a spend.
32:11Absolutely, yeah, let's go, come on.
32:13Ready for that gavel?
32:14Yes.
32:15It's within your grasp.
32:16Yes.
32:17Here it comes.
32:18I can start on commission this time at £55, £65, £75, £80, £5, £90 with commission.
32:31Keep going.
32:32Yes.
32:33£95, £100, make it £110 online, we're still going.
32:35£110, you're in on the net.
32:36What?
32:38Are we all sure and happy?
32:40I will sell then at £110.
32:42Thank you online at £110.
32:44Yes!
32:46Yes!
32:50I'm going to have a hug as well.
32:51Oh, dear.
32:52Well done.
32:54I'm proud of you.
32:55£110 is a £35 profit.
32:58Yes.
32:59You had £37, but no, no, no, no, no.
33:01We are turning that to £72.
33:02£72.
33:03£72 is so good on bargain hunt.
33:06Even better when it's complimented by a golden gavel.
33:09Oh, brilliant.
33:10Oh, brilliant.
33:11So good.
33:12You're going home with money, you're going home with gavels, but you left Danny to go around
33:16the fair on his own with £170.
33:18So, Danny, you go and grab your bonus buy and Reds, close your eyes.
33:23Yes.
33:24Right.
33:25So, come on in, Danny.
33:26Open your eyes.
33:27Yay!
33:28And what we have...
33:29Oh, wow!
33:30Oh, wow!
33:31Wow!
33:32...is a little silver, Patrick Mavros.
33:34He's a Zimbabwean silversmith.
33:36Mm-hm.
33:37And what we have is a little antelope.
33:38It's got his little mark on there.
33:40Oh, wow.
33:41On a wooden plinth.
33:42Very, very nice.
33:43That's beautiful.
33:44Very delicate.
33:45How old would that be?
33:46I don't think it's that old, to be honest.
33:48It might well be 60s, 70s, maybe even a little bit earlier.
33:53But I think he's a very well-known African artist.
33:56Okay.
33:57How much did you pay for it?
33:58I paid £39.
33:59Oh, wow.
34:00I think I've got a good deal.
34:02How much do you think it would make?
34:03Yeah.
34:04I'd see it double its money.
34:05So would we?
34:06So...
34:07Yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:08Well, yeah.
34:09I mean, it's a beautiful thing to behold, but so is a £72 profit on Bargain Hunt.
34:14Are you willing to risk any of it by going with the bonus buy?
34:17I think we should go for it.
34:18I think we should go for it as well.
34:19We've trusted him all the way.
34:20Yeah, that's right.
34:21Absolutely.
34:22Let's do it.
34:23I'll take that.
34:24So the Reds are going to go with the bonus buy.
34:26Let's see what Tim makes of Danny's antelope.
34:31It's very sweet, very perfect.
34:33Antelope silver.
34:34And there's a big market for it, I've learned.
34:37So this could be a very shrewd buy from Danny.
34:39Well, I put £50 to £80.
34:40A good deal for Danny because he only paid £39.
34:42Yeah, that's very clever.
34:45He says £50 to £80.
34:47Oh, brilliant.
34:48So brilliant.
34:49Your chance to get a gavel.
34:51Come on.
34:52Where's £50 to start us?
34:53Let's see where we go.

35:15Very nice work.
35:16Brilliant!
35:17Well done!
35:19It's so good.
35:22Lovely.
35:23You've added £41 to the total.
35:26So £72 sounds nothing when you compare it to £113.
35:31There you go.
35:32I mean, pretty nice.
35:33Brilliant.
35:34And the golden gavel for me.
35:36Danny knows.
35:38Yes!
35:39Danny knows how important it is.
35:40Everyone now gets a golden gavel.
35:41Yes.
35:42Yes.
35:43So tough for you.
35:44It really is.
35:45When you dream about going on Bargain Hunt, this is how you hope it will go.
35:48Yes.
35:49Definitely.
35:50But the Blues had the same dream.
35:51Yes.
35:52And we do wonder how it will pan out for them.
35:53Of course!
35:54Yeah, absolutely.
35:55Unfortunately, their dreams are going to be shattered.
35:57Oh!
36:04You're about to experience your first ever auction.
36:07Mike, Becca, are you feeling quite nervous?
36:09No.
36:10Confident, actually.
36:11Confident.
36:12Because we were nervous.
36:13I was nervous.
36:14Yeah, yeah.
36:15Yeah, yeah.
36:16You're starting with a great lot.
36:17Your £45 knife with case.
36:19Here it comes.
36:20I can go straight in on commission at £55.
36:24Yes!

36:37Where's 90?
36:38Are you all sure and done?
36:40It's with you online then at £85.
36:42We're all done and finished at £85.

36:46Yes!
36:47Wow!
36:48That's that.
36:49£85 is easy maths.
36:50It's a £40 profit as you start.
36:53Now, I asked you to find an item that was designed to be used outside.
36:57£15 was what you paid.
36:59Here comes my challenge item, the Gladstone back.
37:02Get ready.
37:03I can start this at £55, £65, £70.
37:08What?!
37:0980.
37:10Make it 85.
37:1190.
37:1295.
37:13That is so good!
37:15100.
37:16Make it 110.
37:17110.
37:18Yes!
37:19What?!
37:20It's online at 110.
37:22Asking 120.
37:24Where are we?
37:25Are we all sure then?
37:26Thank you online for your bids.
37:27I sell to you at £110.
37:30Yes!
37:31Very well done.
37:32I mean, seriously well done.
37:34That's a £95 profit.
37:36What?!
37:37So good!
37:38So we add that to 40.
37:40You are on £135.
37:42You have two profits.
37:43You're one away from a golden gavel.
37:45Very exciting.
37:47And we come now to the big spend, which is big and beautiful.
37:50The snuff box is just so tactile.
37:52You spent £79 on it.
37:54Here it comes.
37:55I go straight in at 85.
37:58Yes!
37:59Come back to me online.
38:02Any further advance?
38:03On 85 I turn to the room.
38:05Yes!
38:06You did!
38:07Amazing!
38:08So good!
38:10It's an absolute stunner this.
38:12Where are we at 90?
38:13I will sell then at £85.
38:16Yes!
38:1785!
38:18So good!
38:19Oh wow!
38:20Oh wow!
38:21It is an oh wow moment.
38:22Yeah!
38:23It's a £6 profit.
38:24Which in itself isn't wow.
38:26But we add it to your £135 total.
38:28And £141 is pretty wow.
38:30That is good!
38:31Yeah!
38:32As is a golden gavel.
38:34It's so good to make three profits in a row.
38:37But the game is not over.
38:38You know that.
38:39Because you left Kate £161.
38:41So Kate, please grab your bonus pie.
38:43And Blues, please close your eyes.
38:45Yes, cover your eyes.
38:47Right.
38:48Here we go.
38:49Okay.
38:50You ready?
38:51Yeah.
38:52Open your eyes.
38:53Oh wow.
38:54So I have bought you a little bit of jewellery.
38:57It is a brooch.
38:59The lovely thing about it is the enamel work.
39:02It's actually by a Norwegian jeweller.
39:05And it is stamped 925 so we know it's silver gilt.
39:08And this mid 20th century Scandinavian jewellery is very popular at the moment.
39:13How much do you pay for it?
39:15I paid £40.
39:16Okay.
39:17£40.
39:18And what do you think it will make?
39:20I think it's such a nice example.
39:22And blue is particularly popular.
39:24£40 to £60, maybe £70 on a good day.
39:27So Kate thinks there's more money to add to your kitty.
39:31But what are you thinking?
39:33Knowing that you have some money and the gavels, are you thinking let's go all in or let's hold that?
39:37We are all in.
39:38Oh you're all in.
39:39Absolutely.
39:40And she needs to get a gavel as well.
39:42Oh very kind of you.
39:44Okay.
39:45So the blues are definitely going with the bonus buy and I definitely need to hear what Tim thinks.
39:51Norwegian Bernard Maldau.
39:53It's all marked there.
39:54Silver, blue enamel.
39:55Lovely brooch.
39:56A bit of class actually this is.
39:58I put £40 to £60.
39:59£40 paid.
40:00Okay nice.
40:01Tim thinks you've done the right thing.
40:02He also thinks there's money to be made.
40:0340 to 60 is his estimate.
40:04It's time for the bonus buy.
40:05Start me with £50.
40:06Where's £50 in the way?
40:07Just £40 then.

40:2150 unbid.
40:22Where's 55?
