00:00I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:30Now that one is pretty, this is nice, this is how old, this is how old, this is how old.
00:55It's quite nice. This size is £50.
00:59I'll take it. It's my husband's favourite perfume.
01:02Ah.
01:07Thank you very much. Goodbye.
01:09Thank you. Goodbye.
01:25Roger. Hello, Susan.
01:38I've just seen Yvonne Covey. Sorry. What was that? Roger.
01:44I said I just saw Yvonne Covey. Yvonne?
01:51Hang on a minute.
01:54Six months ago. Yes?
01:56We wouldn't be having this conversation now.
01:59I'm not able to authorise payment on this claim until all loose ends are tied up. Thank you for ringing.
02:05Les Jones is outside. Who?
02:07Susan Jones. You know, typing pool.
02:10I didn't send for a typist.
02:12I know.
02:13She says she just saw Yvonne Covey.
02:17Very funny.
02:18She's not joking.
02:20That's all I need, isn't it, on a Friday when I want to get away.
02:23All right.
02:26Susan.
02:31Good afternoon, Miss Jones.
02:32Good afternoon, Mr Manning.
02:34Enjoy your lunch hour?
02:35Yes, thank you.
02:37Had a few drinks, did you?
02:38No, I didn't.
02:39I never drink in the lunch hour.
02:41I see.
02:43So what is all this about thinking you saw someone who looks like Yvonne Covey?
02:46Not looks like her. It was her. Yvonne Covey. I stood right next to her.
02:52Where was this?
02:53In Debenhams.
02:54Debenhams?
02:55Yes, she bought a big bottle of Petetra.
02:57She said it was her husband's favorite.
03:00Petetra?
03:01It's perfume.
03:05Sit down, Miss Jones.
03:08Make yourself comfortable, but not too comfortable.
03:11Let's keep this as brief as possible, shall we?
03:14Now, before you give me any more interesting details about your lunch hour,
03:17let me tell you a couple of things.
03:18Firstly, Yvonne Covey died three years ago.
03:21She couldn't have.
03:24No.
03:25Otherwise, what was she doing in Debenhams? Buying perfume.
03:27Yes.
03:28And secondly, you probably are aware there are such things as look-alikes.
03:32This was no look-alike.
03:33This was her.
03:34How do you know what Yvonne Covey looked like?
03:36It's a very good question, Roger.
03:38Why didn't I think of that?
03:39I saw her picture in the papers.
03:41Lots of times.
03:42What, three years ago?
03:43Yes, but I would know her face anywhere.
03:46Would you?
03:47After all that time?
03:52All right, Roger. Go and get the Covey file, please.
03:54Miss Jones.
03:55You don't seriously imagine that Mercury Assurance would have paid out £250,000 on the husband's policy
04:06if we hadn't made exhaustive inquiries to satisfy ourselves that Mrs. Covey really had drowned at sea.
04:11Do you?
04:12Yes.
04:13I mean, no.
04:14I'm sure you made inquiries.
04:15We did.
04:16And so did the police.
04:18They had a top man at the yard and a man who specializes in missing presumed dead cases.
04:23There we are.
04:24Let's go.
04:33Well, is this the woman you saw?
04:36No.
04:37You sure?
04:38That's not her.
04:41How about this one?
04:42Yes, that's who I saw.
04:44That's Yvonne Covey.
04:46Only she's not blonde anymore.
04:47Her hair is dark brown.
04:49What did you do when you saw it?
04:51I didn't do anything.
04:52I just followed her out of the store.
04:54You followed her out?
04:55Yes.
04:56And she got into a taxi which was waiting for her.
04:59The registration number of the taxi was B248 HGJ.
05:05Well, aren't you going to write it down?
05:08Yes.
05:09Of course.
05:11B248 HGJ.
05:12No.
05:13B248 HGJ.
05:14B248 HGJ.
05:15B248 HGJ.
05:16Roger.
05:17Ring up the public carriage office and see if they can trace a driver who picked up a lady outside
05:30Debenhams.
05:311.25 PM.
05:321.25 PM.
05:331.25 PM.
05:34Right.
05:35Thank you very much, Miss Jones.
05:36I'll make a note of your report.
05:41How will you go about it, Mr. Manning?
05:43Go about what?
05:44Finding Yvonne Covey.
05:46No, I won't find her, will I?
05:48I can't find somebody who died three years ago, can I, Miss Jones?
05:52I've had an idea.
05:59Yes, I was afraid you might.
06:01Wouldn't it be worth it to keep an eye on the husband?
06:04Keep an eye on Mr. Covey?
06:06What on earth for?
06:07Well, he might know where she is.
06:09He would hardly tell us, would he?
06:11It would cost him a quarter of a million pounds to do that, wouldn't it?
06:14No, Mr. Manning.
06:15I mean, if you watched him, you know, without him knowing, he might lead you to her.
06:21Oh, I see.
06:22He might lead us, right.
06:24I hadn't thought of that.
06:25But we'd have to find him first, wouldn't we?
06:28Well, there'd be no problem about that.
06:30How's that, Roger?
06:32He's still insured with us.
06:33No, he cancelled his policy after the settlement, didn't he?
06:36Yeah, but he's still got a pension plan with us.
06:37Well, so you've got his address.
06:39Miss Jones, you obviously don't believe me when I tell you that the woman you saw
06:43could not possibly be Yvonne Covey.
06:46You refused to take my word for it that she died in a boating accident off the Isle of Wight.
06:52So I'll tell you what I'm going to do.
06:55Seeing as you don't believe me, seeing as you won't take my word for it,
06:59I'm gonna let you talk to somebody who you might believe a little bit more than you do me.
07:04So I want you to come here.
07:07Come on.
07:09And sit down in my chair.
07:12There's a Harry Manning of Mercury Assurance on line two for you.
07:25Hello, Manning. How are you?
07:30Hi, I'm Stan. Look, I'm sorry to bother you. Have you got a minute?
07:34Depends. What is it?
07:35I've got someone in my office, a member of my staff.
07:37Well...
07:38Well, she thinks she saw the Covey woman in a store.
07:41Yvonne Covey?
07:43I was wondering if you wouldn't mind confirming to her that the matter is in fact closed.
07:53Look, I'm very busy. I'll put her on, Stan.
07:56Hello?
07:57Who is this?
07:58Miss Jones.
07:59Susan Jones.
08:00I'm Detective Chief Inspector Haynes, New Scotland Yard.
08:03Now, what's all this about?
08:04I saw her today.
08:06Mrs Covey, I mean.
08:07You can't help her.
08:09Mrs Covey is dead, so you can't help her.
08:11Well, did you find her body?
08:12Er, no.
08:13Well, there you are.
08:15Miss Jones, there was an inquest. The coroner was quite satisfied. Thank you.
08:19Were there any witnesses?
08:21Yes. Yes, three. Three independent witnesses.
08:25They saw her on the yacht two miles out of the sea.
08:27When it got back to the Isle of Wight, she was missing.
08:30No other vessel picked her up.
08:31And that's it?
08:33Miss Jones, when there's a big insurance settlement involved,
08:36we investigate especially carefully, thank you.
08:39Hmm.
08:40What was that?
08:42I was just thinking, people swim the Channel, don't they?
08:45I mean, why couldn't she have swum the two miles back to the Isle of Wight?
08:48People who knew her say that Mrs Covey was a poor swimmer.
08:52About two lengths of the swimming pool was all she could manage.
08:55Where did you say you saw her, Miss Jones?
08:57In Debenhams, buying perfume.
09:00Well, people have a knack of looking alike.
09:03Mrs Covey is dead, all right?
09:10Well, now that your mind's been put at rest, plus we can all get on and do some work.
09:14Well, I suppose Scotland Yard can't be wrong.
09:23I'm sorry to have wasted your time, Miss Jones.
09:25That's all right, Miss Jones. We all make mistakes.
09:40Half an hour late, Susan.
09:5427 minutes.
09:55All right.
09:5627 minutes.
09:57I got held up.
09:58Yes.
09:59And you'll get held up here, too, if you don't keep up with your work.
10:00Yes, Mrs Felts.
10:01I'll catch up.

10:41Of course, she's still alive.
10:43And of course, the insurance company and the police say she isn't.
10:46Well they have to, don't they?
10:48Otherwise they made monkeys of themselves three years ago.

20:42Well, I had a cleaning lady, but, um, she hasn't been for the past few weeks.
20:49Just didn't show up.
20:53Do you live here on your own?

21:42Look, um, you might make a start through here.

21:51I see what you mean.
21:53Yeah.
21:54Oh, um, this door here is a cupboard.

23:07Oh.
23:09Well, I'm not really.
23:10I just need some extra money.
23:12You don't look all that hard up.

23:25I'm a secretary.
23:28Well, I'll ask at the shop.
23:31I don't think we need any secretarial help at the moment.
23:35What shop is that?
23:36Oh, it's a place I've got around the corner.

31:16Mr. Manning,
31:20half an hour ago I took a photograph of Yvonne Covey.
31:25You took a photo of Yvonne Covey?
31:27Several, actually.
31:28Well, I only had time to take about four or five when she was with her husband.
31:34How did you find her?
31:36Through her husband.
31:38Really?
31:39I've been cleaning his flat for him.
31:42You've been cleaning his flat, I see.
31:44Yes.
31:45Did you ring the public carriage office?
31:47About what?
31:49About the taxi that picked up Yvonne Covey.
31:51Roger, did you phone the public carriage office?
31:53I rang them Friday afternoon.
31:55Did you?
31:56Yeah.
31:57What did they say?
31:58Well, they said they'd try and trace the taxi driver and asked to get back to them today.
32:01I'll buzz them now.
32:02The registration number was B248HGJ.
32:06Miss Jones,
32:08I appreciate your interest in this matter,
32:10but I have to point out to you that claims investigations are very tricky.
32:14They have to be handled with enormous care.
32:17In a way, it's a rather different sort of department to the rest of the insurance company
32:21and it's not the department you're in, is it?
32:23No.
32:25Aren't you supposed to be typing letters, reports, premium reminders?
32:32I'd better go now.
32:33I'll be getting stick from Mrs. Phelps.
32:35Yes, you'll be getting more than stick from Mrs. Phelps if you carry on like this.
32:38I'd not say anything to her what you've been doing.
32:40No, I won't.
32:45They traced the taxi driver.
32:47He remembers waiting for the lady outside Debenhams.
32:50Then he took her to Chelsea.
32:51There's no address.
32:52He just dropped her in the King's Road.

33:31No.
33:32No.
33:33No.
