For some Australians, continuing to work until the pension age of 67 can be a struggle. Physically demanding jobs such as traditional trades, nursing, or aged care can mean some workers are forced to retire well before the pension age, which can result in financial and health hardships.

00:00Paul Queerley and Peter McLennigan have both worked physically demanding jobs.
00:08It has really worn out my body.
00:10The pain was something that I had to control every day.
00:15Degeneration of her hips and shoulders meant Peter had to stop working full-time in hospitality.
00:22The 58-year-old now volunteers to provide meals for those in need.
00:27But surviving on JobSeeker is not easy.
00:29I say to people I'm one rent increase away from homelessness and I know that sounds very, very drastic, but I literally am.
00:39Paul Queerley reflects on the toll working as a labourer and carpenter has had on his body.
00:45He's had a cancer removed from his nose and the cartilage in his knees and shoulder has worn out.
00:51He has some advice for young tradies.
00:54You can save as much as you possibly can before you get to the age of 55 because it's a long way to the pension from there onwards and it's a lot of pain as well.
01:04Australia's pension age went up from 65 to 67 two years ago to reflect longer life expectancies.
01:12The Federal Government says it has no plans to change the pension age.
01:16There are calls for it to reconsider.
01:19Well I think it's an inflexible system at the moment and it's inequitous based on someone's occupation and their age.
01:28For some workers limited superannuation makes the wait to get to pension age even harder.
01:35Paul would like part time work but believes employers want someone younger.
01:41And I think it has a mental impact on you as well.
01:44Peter retrained in business administration but also struggled to find a job.
01:50I do think that there is an ageism in workplace and in workplaces and in employment.
