Bernard Hopkins faces Robert Allen in a rematch for the IBF Middleweight Title on Showtime Boxing.

00:00:09As Jim pointed out, the main event is next.

00:00:12Hopkins vs. Allen 2, the foul-plagued first meeting ended in a truly bizarre manner.

00:00:17It beckoned a second fight, and the sequel has all the elements of a very intense affair.

00:00:23And even though the original meeting five months ago proved inconclusive, one thing's for sure.

00:00:28There is bad blood that spills over into tonight's rematch of a first fight that had its fill of roughhouse moments.

00:00:41Let's get it on!

00:00:42Allen continues to be the aggressor, and effective.

00:00:46I was surprised. I could see everything he's punched. I could see all his punches.

00:00:49I could see everything he's going to do. I could see it before he does it.

00:00:53You know, I think I'm a little stronger and a little faster than this guy.

00:00:57If the shoe was on the other foot, I'd say the same thing.

00:00:59I mean, you know, what can anybody expect from Robin Allen to say other than I was winning the fight?

00:01:05I was much stronger.

00:01:07Oh, look at this. Look at this. Pure wrestling stuff. Pure, pure, pure wrestling.

00:01:11And his actions showed that he was trying to do any and everything to offset the fight,

00:01:18whether leasing me in my face or whether elbowing me.

00:01:20Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! You know better than that. Lock it up. Come on.

00:01:26Well, he has a good way of tying up one of my hands and punching with the other hand,

00:01:31and that kind of ticks me off.

00:01:32And if he got one of my hands tied up, I can't use the other.

00:01:35I'm going to use something. I'm not going to bite him, but I got other avenues to use him.

00:01:40Getting dirty. Things are getting dirty. Look at that.

00:01:43That's laces in the face. No good.

00:01:46That's the way he calls it intimidating me or giving me back my own medicine.

00:01:51I mean, I think that's a dirty tactic, and I don't think that should be in boxing.

00:01:56Continues to hold it. Bill Flank trying to break Allen away from Hunkins,

00:02:00and he goes through the rope and down to the ground.

00:02:03I didn't know I was actually out of the ring until I was rolling out off the top rope,

00:02:08and I just went out like a rubber band, like out of the ring.

00:02:10And this guy's not getting up.

00:02:12Now this will be... Oh, oh, he's in front.

00:02:14He's in front. He's not going to kill me. He's fighting.

00:02:18He's thinking, I'm about to lose.

00:02:20I think, oh, I lost. I'm not.

00:02:22And that one thing I ask people, I lost? Did I lose?

00:02:26Am I going to lose?

00:02:27I'm about to cry, actually.

00:02:29Because my biggest fear is losing.

00:02:31I don't care about Denard or whoever. I don't want to lose.

00:02:34I just felt the burning sensation.

00:02:36I just felt the real burning sensation in my leg

00:02:39and a slight pain going up towards my calf.

00:02:43And the doctor said that it was ringside that he heard something snapped.

00:02:47The fight was over.

00:02:48This is now a no contest.

00:02:51Bernard Hopkins retains his title.

00:02:54I mean, it's going to be fun. I'm going to have fun with this guy.

00:02:57He's funny. Yeah, that's an old man.

00:02:59You make him look old.

00:03:00Like he did that night. He's going to look old.

00:03:02I say he's right.

00:03:04You jump on me.

00:03:05You know, if I'm too slow and I'm too old, great.

00:03:07Then you know what you do with old men.

00:03:09You take advantage of him.

00:03:10You just jump on me and beat me up.

00:03:13I'm looking to actually break this guy down round by round by round.

00:03:22And to make a statement is to knock Robin and Allen out,

00:03:25have the referee stop it, bust him up,

00:03:27but not to go 12 rounds to set their status that,

00:03:31listen, Bernard Hopkins is one of the best fighters pound for pound.

00:03:41Well, generally, rematches aren't as good as original meetings,

00:03:44but this could be the exception.

00:03:47As we turn back to our ringside partner here, Bobby Chez.

00:03:50And, Bobby, let's get right to it.

00:03:52Your keys to victory for both fighters.

00:03:53All right, Steve.

00:03:54Well, both of these fighters can box and they can punch.

00:03:55They're both pretty sharp counter-punchers as well.

00:03:58So they're going to have to do all of everything well.

00:04:01Here you're going to see there's a little bit of a height difference

00:04:03and reach difference for Hopkins.

00:04:05So he's going to try and draw Robert Allen in,

00:04:08make him miss, and then make him pay.

00:04:10He throws a wild left hook.

00:04:11Allen throws it, misses.

00:04:13Hopkins ducks to the right and then hit fires back with right hand in the left hook.

00:04:16Makes him miss.

00:04:17There's the right hand in the left hook on the inside.

00:04:19That's pretty good on his feet, some side-to-side movement, as you see here.

00:04:22He spins him around, then throws another right hand

00:04:25and left uppercut up the pipe.

00:04:27And he hits Allen without getting hit.

00:04:29That's the best way to win a fight.

00:04:31Hit and not get hit.

00:04:33And left uppercut in the middle.

00:04:34And he's out.

00:04:35He has the reach and he has the height.

00:04:37The flip side of that coin is Robert Allen has to work in behind the jab.

00:04:41He's a little shorter, just slightly less in the reach department.

00:04:44But Hopkins wants to be on the outside.

00:04:45So Allen has to shut that gap down, Steve.

00:04:47He has to work his way in.

00:04:49And he can't just walk in because then Allen is going to get hit.

00:04:51He has to shut this gap down.

00:04:52And he needs to do it with a jab.

00:04:53Here we're going to see him use a measuring jab.

00:04:55He'll throw two jabs, three jabs maybe, just to close that gap.

00:04:58To get inside, here we'll watch him do it.

00:05:01Once he gets inside, that's when he has to tee off.

00:05:03Not only with good combinations, but also counter punches.

00:05:07Now he's closed the gap.

00:05:08Now he's got to fire.

00:05:09You're going to see a left hand over the top and then a right hook.

00:05:12And then he gets out of harm's way before he gets countered.

00:05:14There's the left hand and the right hook.

00:05:20And he's back out of the way.

00:05:22Now he probably should have proved some more combinations to follow it up.

00:05:24But that's what he needs to do.

00:05:25He needs to shut the gap down and score and get out.

00:05:28And both the fighters told us they feel the second fight will be just as ugly as the first.

00:05:33I agree.

00:05:34We'll see how it all comes out.

00:05:35Well, just before the unusual ending in fight number one, I thought Hopkins looked tentative.

00:05:40The champion is supposed to take the fight to the challenger.

00:05:43Instead, it was Allen forcing Hopkins back.

00:05:45And while Allen doesn't have Hopkins' speed, he compensates with strength and will.

00:05:50All three judges had Hopkins ahead two rounds to one.

00:05:53But towards the end, I felt Allen was the guy coming on, dictating the fight, aided by his awkward southpaw style.

00:05:59He may have had the champion figured out.

00:06:01We'll soon see if the ex-Marine can make the executioner an ex-champion.

00:06:11And here he is, the challenger, Robert Allen.

00:06:17Number one contender, former U.S.B.A. Middleweight Champion, Armed Forces Junior Middleweight Champion.

00:06:23Tried out for the 92 U.S. Olympic team, lost by decision to Raul Marquez.

00:06:28Seen him a couple of times now.

00:06:29He looks impressive.

00:06:31As you'll see, heavily muscled, a southpaw, but a natural righty, so he's got power in both hands.

00:06:36But difficult to get a true read on this guy.

00:06:40His fight with Hopkins ended prematurely.

00:06:42And an embarrassing mismatch on the Holyfield Vaughn Bean card in September.

00:06:47His opponent, Abdullah Ramadan, turned his back on him and quit in the first round.

00:06:51Ferdy, while Hopkins tries to use intimidation as a weapon, it doesn't really have much effect on Allen.

00:06:59And, in fact, here's a twist.

00:07:00Allen looks to intimidate Hopkins.

00:07:03Well, at this level, I don't think intimidation in either case is going to work.

00:07:07What is going to work is that both agree on one thing.

00:07:10Allen is a better athlete.

00:07:12Remember, in our interview when we were talking yesterday, Hopkins said, quite simply, he's a better athlete in everything he does.

00:07:18He's better than me in everything he does, except he's not as good a boxer as I am.

00:07:22So, I think both men respect each other in spite of his bad blood.

00:07:26I don't think there's any intimidation when you've fought each other like this once before.

00:07:30It's going to get dirty?

00:07:31It might.

00:07:31It's going to get tough?

00:07:32It will.

00:07:33And so, it's going to be a hard, hard-fought match between two evenly matched contestants.

00:07:39I think this is a quality championship fight.

00:07:43So, there he is, Robert Allen.

00:07:46Once a homeless person, lived in something called Tent City in Los Angeles.

00:07:51Tent City in Los Angeles, was adopted by a couple of people and then made it all the way to the U.S. Berees.

00:07:56And the champion, who has the nickname of the Executioner, Bernard Hopkins, he has shed the Executioner's mask.

00:08:09Won the title in 95 over Segundo Mercado.

00:08:12Seven of his eight defenses by knockout, including John David Jackson and D.C. area product Simon Brown.

00:08:17But both passed their prime.

00:08:18Well, he may not be wearing the mask, but some of his cohorts are.

00:08:25In 93, he lost by convincing unanimous decision to Roy Jones here in Washington.

00:08:29Today, considered the man to beat in the middleweight division.

00:08:32But some doubts were raised the night before he fought Allen.

00:08:37Very mellow music for the Executioner as he makes his way toward the ring.

00:08:41He is 34.

00:08:42He's fighting pro since 88.

00:08:43Almost 100 amateur fights.

00:08:45His Olympic dream in 84, doused by prison.

00:08:47He spent five years in prison for armed robbery.

00:08:51Rough life from the harsh streets of Philadelphia.

00:08:53Bobby Allen's camp feels that Hopkins got old in that first fight.

00:08:57Is it all starting to take its toll on Hopkins?

00:09:00Well, you know, Steve, life in general takes its toll on all people, fighters included, and maybe even more so for fighters who age a little more quickly because of the abuse.

00:09:07The gym wars that Philly fighters are famous for, Hopkins has said specifically, I've gotten away from that.

00:09:12I'm boxing smart.

00:09:13But still, the grind time and time again for each and every fight.

00:09:16And every title fight's a bigger grind.

00:09:18Then you have the fights, all the fights.

00:09:20Couple that with the age and just the factors that go with getting older.

00:09:24You know, it catches up with all of us sooner or later.

00:09:26Trust me.

00:09:26I know.

00:09:27Maybe it's not the night that he catches up with Hopkins, but he'll catch up with him eventually.

00:09:33Well, this looks more like a funeral procession than a ring walk.

00:09:38Well, that's what executioners do.

00:09:39They cause funerals.

00:09:40Well, Allen's trainer, Pepe Correa, says a big key will be whoever forces the other back.

00:09:48That will be the winner.

00:09:49Can Hopkins win going backwards?

00:09:52You know, Hopkins can win a little more readily going backwards than can Allen because he has the height and a slight reach advantage.

00:09:57And he's a little more of a boxer as opposed to a puncher and slugger.

00:10:00But they both can punch.

00:10:02They can both box.

00:10:03But going forward is premium for Allen, not premium as much for Hopkins.

00:10:09Let's see how they stack up now as we go to the tail of the tape.

00:10:14Allen, five years younger than Hopkins.

00:10:20So Allen is punching upwards.

00:10:22Hopkins slightly over the weight limit.

00:20:06In the corner of Hopkins, they were very satisfied.

00:20:09They knew he won the round and imposed himself.

00:20:12On the other corner, they were not happy.

00:20:14They wanted him to go out and establish this jab

00:20:16and do various other things.

00:20:17They knew they lost that first round.

00:20:18You can see both fighters are anticipating

00:20:20each other's leads and counters

00:20:22with a great expectation of the power by both sides.
