00:14I mean, the impact for ordinary Americans here could be pretty painful, depending on how long
00:22this drags on for. You're right, nearly three quarters of a million federal workers today
00:28facing either being furloughed or in the cases of some jobs like the TSA offices, air traffic
00:37controllers, they are facing right now going into work today to keep things running without pay.
00:44What does that mean in real terms? It means that families across America are facing a situation
00:50where they are going to have to pay rent, their child care, their transport costs, all of that
00:55with no income coming in. And that has a real knock on impact. You speak to Americans about the last
01:03time it happened. The impact of that was enormous. The both sides here are going to be betting on
01:11the American people feeling the pain and putting the blame on the parties and trying to get people
01:18back to the table here. But look, it is a very, very difficult situation facing the American people
01:26here. And the question is really, look, who blinks first? Because whilst you've got Republicans and
01:33Democrats playing this pretty dangerous game here and this blame game this morning, it is the ordinary
01:39Americans who are paying the price here. And for many Americans that I'm speaking to today and in the lead up to
01:45this shutdown, they're saying, look, when it comes to some of the demands from Democrats for the
01:52extension of these health care subsidies, well, maybe the compromise from the Republicans is going
01:58to be less painful in the short term than holding out and the pain that's going to come as a result of
02:05that to the ordinary Americans across the country, to the U.S. economy and to the political leaders that are
02:12at the centre of this being held responsible.
