00:00Wakefield Council has voted in favour of continuing to fly the Union Jack flag from
00:05major buildings across the district. Councillors also agreed for the St George's flag to be flown
00:12from local authority buildings on April 23rd and Yorkshire's White Rose on August 1st every year.
00:20The vote was held after the council's opposition leader called for it to become compulsory for the
00:26flag of St George to be flown on all schools and public buildings. Nadeem Ahmed said the move
00:32would prevent England's national flag being misappropriated by divisive groups seeking to
00:38promote intolerance, thus giving those who may feel uncomfortable due to the intention behind
00:43the flag flying the opportunity to reclaim it as a symbol of comfort.
