00:00Canadian postal workers protested against government measures to overhaul the National Postal Service on Wednesday,
00:09nearly a week into a strike that has stopped mail delivery.
00:13Over 100 Canada Post employees gathered in downtown Toronto as part of a National Day of Action,
00:19organized by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
00:22The union is trying to negotiate a new contract and opposes proposed government budget cuts
00:28that include ending door-to-door delivery and closing some rural post offices.
00:34Protesters said the changes are unfair to workers and to Canadians who rely on the system.
00:39The major concern here is that we're all going to lose our jobs.
00:44But beyond that is that you're not going to have a postal service anymore.
00:49They're going to eliminate door-to-door delivery.
00:52They're going to eliminate most of the normal rights that Canadians have to receive mail five days a week.
01:02And they're trying to ruin Canadians' rights.
01:05They're trying to basically destroy an institution that's been the backbone of Canada for over 100 years.
01:16And it's unacceptable.
01:18And, you know, they want to dismantle the whole thing.
01:22And we can't let them do that.
01:23We can't let them, as Canadians, we can't let them do that.
01:26They're stepping on our rights.
01:27We want a negotiated contract, a fairly negotiated contract.
01:33That's why we're here.
01:34We don't need government interference.
01:36We need for our corporation to sit down with our negotiators and come up with a decent contract.
01:43We're not asking – we know that there's going to be some concessions.
01:46We know that we're going to have to move the line and that we're not going to get everything that we want.
01:53I'm realistic on that level.
01:55Government-owned Canada Post faces deep financial trouble, and officials say the cost-cutting steps are necessary.
02:02Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday that the Postal Service is an essential service and must remain viable,
02:10noting that the situation is currently difficult.
02:14Canada Post said on September 26th, a day after the strike started, that it is reassessing new global offers to the union.
02:22Union leaders say negotiations have stalled despite multiple exchanges of offers.
